Dit is het begin van een schitterende passage in de King James Bible van 1611, uit het Boek Samuel II. Een passage waarvan La Bible Osty wist te vertellen: Le morceau qui suit est, par sa belle tenue littéraire, un des meilleurs de la Bible. Le narrateur poursuit son récit avec l'impassibilité d'un rapport de police. David ayant commis l'adultère avec Bethsabée, la femme d'Uriah, cherche à couvrir leur faute commune. Il a d'abord recours à un stratagème, qui échoue. Il décide alors d'assassiner Urie, et il confie cette tâche au chef de l'armée.

3. And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, is not this, Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?

5. And the woman conceived and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

Wat David niet had verwacht en wat niet goed te praten was, want Uriah, de man van Bethsabee bevocht in Rabbah 'the children of Ammon. Wie weet hoe lang reeds dat hij de stad belegerde en hoe lang geleden het was dat hij met zijn vrouw het echtelijk bed had gedeeld. En David moet geweten hebben dat overspel met de dood werd gestraft, want stond er niet geschreven in Deuteronomy, 22, 22:

10. And when they had told David, saying Uriah went not down unto his house. David said unto Uriah, camest thou not from thy journey? Why then didst thou not go down into thine house?

PS. Zeg ik nog: als ik de King James versie van de Bijbel gebruik, dat dit te danken is, uitsluitend, aan John Steinbeck en zijn 'East of Eden', waarin ik getroffen werd door de geschiedenis van de vertaling van het Hebreeuwse woord 'timshell'. Veel meer was er niet, maar het was voldoende.
