Big day today. After nearly 3 weeks I was back on a bike outside . Obviously that proved to be quite a shock for my body and especially for the muscles and structures surrounding my hips and lower back. I started out on a very easy ride but I was not surprised to see my heartrate way up in the 130bpm area. Firstly, I still was recovering from a cold and the medication that implied, secondly staying off of your bike for 2 weeks and then slowly working your way back to fitness on the rollers leaves somewhat to be desired. The feeling of supercompensation I had in the week after my injury dwindled away quickly, not stopped by the fact that I developed a cold in the second week. Getting on the rollers exactly 2 weeks after the injury certainly helped to regain some biking fitness but the fact that I had to take it very easy did not increase that fitness enormously. Also, the anticipation and downright fear to hurt myself again also added a few clicks to my heartbeat counter. I chose the 30-K version of the BLOSO route that starts in Heverlee and loops over Sint Joris Weert, Sint Agatha Rode , Neerijse and Egenhoven. I included an extra climb up to the Smeysberg plateau but I was glad to see the 'Blanden' sign , indicating that I was nearly home. The temperature was not as high as forecast - when I left the sun felt warm on my longsleeved vest and 3/4 trousers but the sun hid quickly behind some cloud cover and the temperature was a mere 16 degrees C. Luckily there was not a lot of wind . It felt great to be outdoors again but I have to resign to the fact that the next couple of weeks will see me riding short distances on the road to regain some suppleness and build up my basic bike fitness again to an acceptable level.
