Early start in Leuven. Around 7.30 we gathered at the Novotel for a cup of coffee, meeting up with our fellow cyclists and a photoshoot. Starting a bit later the first bit was very familiar to me since it took us along the Ravel 2 towards Namur. In Namur we passed along the rivers Sambre and Meuse and before long we were at the first rest stop in Jambes. Here the Avis camionette awaited us with some food and refreshments. The skies had been threatening but so far they remained dry and we could continue with our bellies full along the river Meuse towards Givet and the entry into France. The sun was out now and even though the ride looked long with 175K we made good progress.
I had decided to join the slower group. Slow is not the right word, I prefer "less fast". We made an average of 24kph which is not bad at all considering the distance and the couple of hills we encountered. The pace is just more relaxed . The second rest stop was in Vireux and by then we were riding in the sun. The descent in Montherme where we joined the river Meuse again was a memorable one. Fast and with an opportunity to reach high speeds. Arriving at the hotel that evening we enjoyed the sun on the terrace and a nice massage of the legs. A great day and things looked promising for the next days although the forecast called for rain.
