Over wandelen, hardlopen, fotografie en Belgische bieren Van 0 naar 42,2 km! September 2004 beginnen lopen, om overgewicht kwijt te geraken. Inmiddels 2 marathons uitgelopen (Brussel 2006, Cheverny 2007). Hier vertel ik over mijn loopvorderingen, verslagjes over mijn wandeltochten en mijn ontdekkingsreis door de Belgische biercultuur. Maar ook mijn andere hobby's zoals natuur en fotografie, muziek en onze perikelen als lesgever en ongevalssimulanten bij het Rode Kruis komen hier aan bod. Op 28 april 2006 traden Fleur en ik in het huwelijk en gingen daaropvolgend schapenhoeden in Zuid-Frankrijk. Op 23 juni 2007 werd onze dochter Ariadne geboren.

Pukkelpop 2012
Op zaterdag 18 augustus was ik samen met zoon Pieter op Pukkelpop te Kiewit (Hasselt). Een zonnige dag met tropische temperaturen rond 35°C!
Op zaterdag waren er 66 groepen, verdeeld over 8 podia.
We zagen een heleboel goede groepen aan het werk, onder andere:

Op zaterdag 30 juni samen met Pieter en Cédric naar Rock Werchter. Nu ook weer een heleboel goede groepen aan het werk gezien. 21 groepen brachten er muziek op drie podia (The Barn, Pyramid Marquee, Main Stage).
We zagen er onder andere volgende groepen aan het werk:

De kans dat er iets vanuit Mars hiernaartoe zou komen was één op een miljoen. En toch kwamen ze! Vrijdag 26 november landde Jeff Wayne met zijn muzikale versie van The War of The Worlds in de Lotto Arena te Antwerpen. In deze bijzonder spectaculaire show dirigeert hij de tienkoppige Black Smoke Band, de 36-koppige symfonische ULLAdubULLA Strings en sterren als Justin Hayward (Moody Blues), Chris Thompson (Manfred Manns Earth Band), Liz McClarnon (Atomic Kitten), Rhydian (UKs X-Factor) en de Australische ster Jason Donovan. Het verhaal en de verschillende versies van The War of The Worlds zijn alom gekend bij het publiek. Voor velen blijft dit bijzondere avontuur in hun verbeelding de eerste kennismaking met een buitenaardse invasie, ongeacht of dit gebeurde door het boek van de briljante H.G. Wells (1898), het hoorspel van Orson Welles (1938) - dat de Amerikaanse luisteraars de stuipen op het lijf joeg - of de moderne verfilmde versie van Steven Spielberg (2005). Het was echter de originele versie, die van HG Wells ten tijde van het Victoriaanse Engeland, die in 1978 de aandacht trok van componist Jeff Wayne. De New Yorkse producer/componist Jeff Wayne was in het midden van de jaren 70 op zoek naar zijn groot project. Wayne, wiens vader musicalproducent was, had al soundtracks voor het theater gemaakt en zou later nog met The Who en Ladysmith Black Mambazo werken, alsook met tientallen andere artiesten uit de film-, theater- en uiteraard muziekwereld. Bij het lezen van de beroemde roman van HG Wells kreeg hij een openbaring. Hij kon niet weerstaan aan de combinatie van het tijdperk en het intergalactische drama. Er volgden drie jaren van compositie, montage en het plaatsen van de grootste namen Richard Burton blijft onvergetelijk in zijn rol van de journalist uit die tijd om uiteindelijk geschiedenis te schrijven met het conceptalbum Jeff Waynes Musical Version of The War of The Worlds (1978). Naast de boeiende vertelling door Richard Burton waren in deze meeslepende mix van progrock en klassiekgetinte muziek ook de voortreffelijke vertolkingen te horen van enkele van de grootste artiesten uit de jaren 70, met name David Essex, Justin Hayward, Phil Lynott en Julie Covington. We hebben gisteren intens genoten van dit spectakel! Hieronder de aanvang van de show met het bekendste tijdloze nummer.

Vrijdagavond gingen Fleur en ik naar de première van de 26ste Night of the Proms in het Sportpaleis te Antwerpen.
Het programma van dit jaar bestaat uit John Fogerty, Grace Jones, Boy George, Charlie Siem en John Miles. Dit zijn de artiesten die op het podium van Night of the Proms komen, allemaal in één fantastische show. Te veel hoogtepunten op één avond om het allemaal te kunnen vertellen.
Boy George heeft spijtig genoeg niet meer de stem om zijn hits van de Culture Club te zingen, maar bracht op het einde wel een mooie versie van 'Always on my Mind'. Grace Jones was niet alleen extravagant maar ook pure klasse. Welke tweeënzestig jarige zie je nog, al hoelahoepend (!) 'Slave of the Rythm' zingen.
John Fogerty rockte zo hard dat het hele Sportpaleis op zijn grond daverde en 'Music'-man John Miles stelt ook nooit teleur. Als verassingsact was er niemand minder dan Barry Hay, leadzanger van 'The Golden Earring', met de klassiekers 'Radar Love' en 'When de Lady smiles'! Dit afgewisseld met prachtige klassieke muziek van Il Novecento onder leiding van Robert Groslot en begeleidt door het (weliswaar iets kleinere) koor van 'Fine Fleur'. Dan was er nog de 24-jarige vioolvirtuoos Charlie Siem, die wel een reïncarnatie leek van James Dean en met elke beweging van zijn strijkstok het jong vrouwelijk publiek in zwijm liet vallen.
Kortweg een topavond hebben we weer beleefd.

Weinig tijd gehad afgelopen week. Donderdag vierden we mijn vader's tachtigste verjaardag. Speciaal om dit te vieren heb ik opgezocht wat er in de afgelopen 80 jaar zoal gebeurd en veranderd is. Via Wikipedia is er zo heel wat info te vinden, en als je zo tachtig jaar doorbladert, ben je eigenlijk zelf verrast wat er zo allemaal gepasseerd is. Een fantastisch nummer dat me meteen aan Johnny Cash deed denken. Dit is Belgisch! 'Icon'" is de nieuwste song van Daan uit zijn album 'Manhay'. This song reminded me of Johnny Cash but it is pure Belgian. 'Icon' is the newest song of Daan (of the album 'Hayman').
Susan Margaret Boyle (Blackburn (West Lothian), 1 april 1961) is een Schotse kerkvrijwilligster en amateurzangeres die in 2009 in de publieke belangstelling kwam toen ze meedeed aan de derde serie van Britain's Got Talent. NuttinBut Stringz, oftewel N.B.S. bestaat uit de viool spelende broers Damien en Tourie Escobar, ze brengen een mix van klassiek, hip-hop, jazz en R&B. De grote doorbraak kwam er na de audities van Americas Got Talent waarbij ze in 2008 de finales bereikten.
Nuttin' But Stringz, also known as N.B.S., consists of brothers Damien and Tourie Escobar who both play violin. The musicians from Jamaica, Queens play a blend of classical music, hip-hop, jazz and R&B. The brothers big break came when they auditioned for the third season of NBC's America's Got Talent in New York City and received a unanimous yes from all three judges. They made it through subsequent rounds and were one of the five acts to make it to the finals.

Bohemian Rhapsody van Queen is voor mij een van de beste songs ooit aller tijden. De Muppet Show was voor mij het beste TV-programma aller tijden. Des te meer kon ik daarom ook genieten van deze schitterende song.

Gisterenavond hebben we genoten van een prachtige "Night of the Proms" in Antwerpen, misschien wel de beste in hun 25-jarig bestaan. Visueel gewoonweg subliem en ook muzikaal het ene hoogtepunt na het andere. Een aantal van mijn favoriete artiesten waren aanwezig. Toots Thielemans, inmiddels 87 jaar oud, hadden we reeds 5 jaar geleden live in Bilzen gezien en Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark hadden we zo'n kwarteeuw geleden ook al live meegemaakt. Within Temptation met de prachtige stem van Sharon den Adel maar vooral het wederoptreden van Roxette met een fragile Marie Fredriksson waren een van de vele hoogtepunten. De revelatie dit jaar waren de Katona Twins, twee gitaarvirtuozen uit Hongarije. Een absoluut hoogtepunt uit de NOPT 2009 was voor mij Robert Plant's "Stairway to Heaven", gebracht door de Katona Twins, John Miles en Sharon den Adel, een van de vele kippenvelmomenten. Kate Bush (geboren 30 juli 1958, Bexleyheath, Kent, GB) debuteerde in 1978 met de hit Wuthering Heights, dat was geïnspireerd op het gelijknamige boek van Emily Brontë. Het nummer stond in Groot-Brittannië vier weken lang op de eerste plaats van de hitlijsten. Haar debuutalbum The Kick Inside werd zowel artistiek als commercieel hoog gewaardeerd. De plaat, geproduceerd door David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), bevatte hits zoals "Them Heavy People" en "The Man With The Child In His Eyes". David Gilmour wordt wel haar ontdekker genoemd, omdat hij haar zowel financieel als moreel steunde tijdens het opnemen van haar eerste demo's, en haar verder ook promootte bij zijn eigen platenmaatschappij, EMI.
Bush ondernam slechts eenmaal een tournee, The Tour Of Life, in 1978-1979. Ze baarde veel opzien door haar mime-achtige manier van dansen. Ze was de eerste zanger die live een draadloze microfoon op haar hoofd droeg (waardoor ze haar handen vrij had).
Latere albums zoals Lionheart en Never for Ever waren commercieel gezien iets minder succesvol dan haar debuut maar niettemin werden "Babooshka" en "Army Dreamers" hits. Latere hits waren onder andere "Cloudbusting" en "Running Up That Hill". Eind jaren tachtig scoorde Bush een hit samen met Peter Gabriel met het nummer "Don't Give Up". In 1986 nam ze eveneens een duet op met de Schotse band Big Country ("The Seer").

Woodstock 1969 Country Joe McDonald, Feel like Iâm fixing to die
Nogmaals een LP uit mijn collectie die eigenlijk iedereen zou moeten gehoord hebben. Op 15 augustus is het exact 40 jaar geleden dat dit festival plaats had.
Bethel bij Woodstock, tot vóór 1969 een plaats in Amerika waar niemand ooit van had gehoord. Tot 15, 16 en 17 augustus 1969 .. Een mega popfestival vond plaats op het terrein van een melkboer. De verwachtte 20.000 a 25.000 werden er 400.000, plus nog eens de 100.000-en die onderweg naar het festival waren. Véél en véél meer dan het terrein eigenlijk aankon. Het festival zou de geschiedenis ingaan als het Woodstock Music & Art festival, het beroemste muziekfestival ooit.
De grootste sterren waren aanwezig, een kleine greep uit de vele artiesten: The Who, Joe Cocker, Ravi Shankar, Melanie, CCR, Jefferson Airplane , Janis Joplin enz. Ondanks dat er veel alcohol gedronken werd en veel drugsgebruik, was er betrekkelijk weinig criminaliteit en geweld.
Toch verliep alles verre van vlekkeloos: er was veel regen, veel te weinig voorzieningen waren er door de enorme onverwachte hoeveelheid mensen ( waarvan er 10.000-en zonder kaartje!) en vielen er zelfs doden: iemand met een overdosis, iemand met een acute blindedarmontsteking en iemand die tijdens de slaap door een tractor werd doodgereden.
De chaos was zo groot, dat de hulp van het leger werd ingeroepen om de hoeveelheid mensen van water en voedsel te voorzien. Rare gewaarwording moet dat zijn geweest: het leger, waar de hippies zich met protestliederen en acties tegen verzetten, waren nu broodnodig!
Doordat er zó ontzettend veel mensen kwamen zonder toegangsbewijs, en de organisatoren het op een gegeven moment niet meer in de hand hadden die tegen te houden, dreigde het festival ook een financiële ramp te worden. Door de platen verkoop en de filmverkoop, werd het uiteindelijk toch nog een winstgevende zaak.
Woodstock was a music and art festival, billed as An Aquarian Exposition, held at Max Yasgur's 600 acre (2.4 km²; 240 ha) dairy farm in the rural town of Bethel, New York from August 15 to August 18, 1969. Bethel, in Sullivan County, is 43 miles (69 km) southwest of the village of Woodstock, New York, in adjoining Ulster County.
The festival exemplified the counterculture of the late 1960s early 1970s and the "hippie era". Thirty-two of the best-known musicians of the day appeared during the sometimes rainy weekend in front of nearly half a million concertgoers. Although attempts have been made over the years to emulate the festival, the original event has proven to be unique and legendary. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest moments in popular music history and was listed on Rolling Stone's 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll.

Tijdens hun middelbare-schoolperiode begonnen Simon en Garfunkel met het zingen van liedjes van onder andere de Everly Brothers. In 1956 namen ze de artiestennamen Tom and Jerry aan (Paul Simon als Jerry Landis en Art Garfunkel als Tom Graph), startten daarmee officieel een carrière en kregen een eerste opnamecontract. In 1957 schreven ze voor het eerst eigen teksten en scoorden een eerste hit: Hey schoolgirl. Volgende pogingen tot hits te komen bleken niet succesvol en na de middelbare school ging een ieder zijn eigen weg.
In de daarop volgende periode zagen ze elkaar weinig. In 1962 ontmoetten ze elkaar weer en eind 1963 traden ze op onder de naam Simon & Garfunkel.
Doordat hun muziek werd gebruikt als soundtrack voor de film The Graduate (met Dustin Hoffman in de hoofdrol) kwam hun carrière in een stroomversnelling. Met hun rustige, goed in het gehoor liggende en mild maatschappijkritische nummers stegen ze in de hitparades. Nummers als The Sound of Silence, Homeward Bound, I am A Rock, Kathy's Song, April Come She Will, A Hazy Shade of Winter, America, Scarborough Fair, Mrs. Robinson, The Boxer, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Cecilia, El Condor Pasa en My Little Town zijn nog steeds bij veel mensen bekend. Zij hebben ook een song gewijd aan de beroemde architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
Sommige van hun songs hebben de status van evergreen bereikt. Simon & Garfunkel wonnen samen vijf Grammy Awards voor hun albums. Het duo ging in 1970 uit elkaar.
Na een pauze van elf jaar kwamen Paul Simon en Art Garfunkel op 19 september 1981 voor één keer samen voor een optreden in Central Park in New York. Bijna een half miljoen mensen waren aanwezig bij dit memorabele optreden. In 2003 ontving het duo een Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award
Simon & Garfunkel is an American singer-songwriter duo consisting of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. They formed the group "Tom and Jerry" in 1957, and had their first taste of success with the minor hit "Hey, Schoolgirl". As Simon and Garfunkel, the duo rose to fame in 1965, backed by the hit single "The Sounds of Silence". Their music was featured in the landmark film The Graduate, propelling them further into the public consciousness.
They are well known for their close vocal harmonies and sometimes unstable relationship. Their last album, Bridge over Troubled Water, was delayed several times due to artistic disagreements. They were among the most popular recording artists of the 1960s; among their biggest hits, in addition to "The Sounds of Silence", were "I Am a Rock", "Homeward Bound", "Mrs. Robinson", "Bridge over Troubled Water", and "The Boxer". They have received several Grammys and are inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame (2007). In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Simon and Garfunkel #40 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
They have reunited on several occasions since their 1970 breakup, most famously for 1981's The Concert in Central Park, which attracted about 500,000 people.

Elke zondag kies ik een album uit mijn collectie LP's, deze keer 'Making Movies' van de Dire Straits. Ik zag ze live optreden in 1981 en vooral 'Romeo and Juliet' liet live een blijvende indruk achter.
