& wel i n t e g r a a l...

Realisatie : Hubert Sauper
België-Frankrijk-Oostenrijk, 2004

Speelduur : 107 min

(..) even pertinent als ’Fahrenheit 9/11’, even duister als ’Apocalypse Now’."

Erik Stockman - Humo

dhr. BONTE, Hans,
Volksvertegenwoordiger (SPA)
hans.bonte@vilvoorde.be

Geachte Heer Bonte,
Beste Hans,

Vriendelijke groeten,

De redactie

....van onze verslaggever ter plaatse

Wij doen dus mee !!...

& be sure !! Hoe méér stilte *GRIJNS*... hoe harder wij er tegenaan gaan & hoe harder wij er tegenaan schoppen !!

Let's kick some ass !!

*KOTS* ...Integendeel : wake up & vooral : grow up !! ...& that's it !!

...& in 2009...& in 2010...

The Global Fund

Er zijn vele redenen voor armoede. The Global Fund gaat AIDS, tuberculose en malaria tegen.

They don't care !!

Ach, Belgen & Vlamingen & lef... 't is triestig !!

Let's kick some ass !!

...

Hoe dommer & meegaander u bent...

Dus hebben we in feite niks specifiek tegen Delhaize, want indien Carrefour of Colruyt zulke actie zouden doen, zouden we net hetzelfde zeggen.

By Rachel Oliver
For CNN

(CNN) -- When the average person contemplates the issues surrounding landfills, it's doubtful they give much consideration to the tons of food that fill them.

Food biodegrades so where is the problem?

The problem, environmentalists say, is just that. When food rots, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says is 20 times more damaging to the environment than carbon dioxide (CO2).

....van onze verslaggever ter plaatse

The developed world chucks out a lot of food. Such is the volume that according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), if just 5 percent of Americans' food scraps were recovered it would represent one day's worth of food for 4 million people.

The U.N. World Food Programme offers another way of looking at it: It says the total surplus of the U.S. alone could satisfy "every empty stomach" in Africa (France's leftovers could feed the Democratic Republic of Congo; and Italy's could feed Ethiopia's undernourished).

Proportionately, the UK and Japan have traditionally been among the worst offenders worldwide in recent years when it comes to food waste, discarding between 30 and 40 percent of their food produce annually. The figures for how much the U.S. throws out, however, vary considerably depending on whom you ask.

According to the USDA, just over a quarter of the country's food -- about 25.9 million tons -- gets thrown in the garbage can every year.

But according to a study conducted by the University of Arizona, that figure could be as high as 50 percent, as the University claims that the country's supermarkets, restaurants and convenience stores alone throw out 27 million tons between them every year (representing $30 billion of wasted food).

Either way, it still costs the U.S. around $1 billion every year just to dispose of all its food waste, according to the EPA.

But moral and economic issues aside, it is the environmental concerns around food waste that is driving the push for reform on how to treat the problem of leftovers. Methane, the gas food waste produces, traps 23 times as much heat in the atmosphere as the same amount of CO2, the EPA says. And landfills are the place you will find most of it -- they account for 34 percent of all methane emissions in the U.S.

The University of Arizona believes that if Americans cut their food waste in half, it would reduce the country's environmental impact by 25 percent. The UK's Waste & Resources Action Program (WRAP) -- which says the entire food supply chain in the UK contributes 20 percent of its greenhouse gas emissions -- believes that if we stopped throwing out edible food, the impact it would have on CO2 emissions would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 5 cars off the road.

But ironically, one of the solutions to dealing with food waste actually results in a product that could keep cars on the road: Biogas.

Biogas is a by-product of a process called anaerobic digestion (AD). AD is a process where organic matter -- such as food waste -- breaks down in an environment with little or no oxygen, generating a natural gas made up of 60 percent methane and 40 percent CO2. It is the exact process, in fact, which goes on in landfills. But there is a difference.

Whereas methane can be harmful to the environment in an open setting, such as a landfill, in controlled and closed settings such as a combined heat and power plant, it can be harnessed and converted into biogas, a renewable energy. And that energy can be used to provide heat, light and fuel.

According to a study by the National Society for Clean Air, biogas-fueled cars can reduce CO2 emissions by anything from 75 percent to 200 percent compared to cars powered by fossil fuels.

Most organic matter can be processed with AD. In the UK it is already being used to treat sewage, which Friends of the Earth (FOE) says, reduces CO2 emissions by 16 percent compared to traditional sewage treatments. According to the Chartered Institute for Environmental Health, gas from sewage waste and landfills is already being used to provide 650 MW of electricity to the UK's national grid, representing between 60 and 75 percent of the country's green energy (the UK is Europe's biggest producer of biogas).

However, while the potential for food waste-as-energy seems big, the practical applications for it are currently very small (only 0.4 percent of the UK's food waste is processed by AD, for example), with critics of AD pointing out that the amount food waste can contribute to the energy supply are negligible to say the least.

FOE itself admits that just 0.36 percent of the UK's electricity needs could be met by AD. And, if 5.5 million tons of food waste was treated by AD (the majority of the UK's annual 6.7 million tons of food waste) it could only generate enough electricity to power 164,000 houses.

That being said, environmentalists will say, that's much better than getting that electricity from fossil fuels. And there has been a big push, in Europe in particular, to cut back on the amount of biodegradable waste that is being sent to landfills. According to the European Landfill Directive, the amount of biodegradable waste sent to landfills in member countries by 2020 must reach 35 percent of the levels reached in 1995. advertisement

The country that is leading the way in putting its biodegradable waste mountains to good use -- particularly in the world of biogas-powered cars -- is Sweden.

That country -- which plans to eliminate petrol and diesel vehicles from their streets by 2020 -- already has 7,000 biogas cars on the road. It also has 779 biogas buses and the world's first biogas train, which, according to The Ecologist, cost just 1 million euros ($1.4 million) to develop. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend

Food Waste

FOOD WASTE INCLUDES uneaten portions of meals and trimmings from food preparation activities in kitchens, restaurants and cafeterias. Food waste is the third-largest component of generated waste by weight. However, because of its low composting rate, food waste is the largest component of discarded waste by weight.

According to a study by the University of Arizona Garbage Project, Americans throw away 1.3 pounds of food every day, or 474.5 pounds per year. This is more than twice the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) estimates. In response to this and a previous U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) study, the EPA has revised its data methodology from the late '90s to present. Increased consumption of packaged foods was a key factor causing food waste's share of the solid waste stream to decrease by one-sixth in the period from 1960 to 2000.

The USDA estimates that higher percentages of fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy and grain products are thrown away, while lower percentages of meat, dried beans, nuts and processed foods are disposed of.

Food waste composting is in its infancy, held back by cost and vector control concerns.

Gordon Brown puts the spotlight on supermarket food waste

Last Updated: 12:27AM BST 11 Jul 2008

Supermarkets are under pressure to help cut the mountain of food thrown out, reports James Hall

Plastic bags, landbanks, treatment of suppliers and allegations of price-fixing are just a few of the issues that supermarket bosses have been forced to grapple with by the Government, competition watchdogs and consumer groups over recent years.

Yesterday a new hot topic emerged. Food waste. But this time it was not a faceless quango or competition authority shining the spotlight on the food industry. It was arguably the biggest pressure group of all - Gordon Brown.

Speaking on board his flight to the G8 summit in Japan, the Prime Minister delivered a subtle broadside against UK supermarkets. "If we are to get food prices down, we must also do more to deal with unnecessary demand, such as by all of us doing more to cut our food waste, which is costing the average household in Britain around £8 per week," he said.

The clear implication was that "unnecessary demand" is being created in the food chain by supermarkets offering money-off promotions and "buy-one-get-one-free" (or BOGOF) offers.

* More on retail

Mr Brown's comments came as the Government launched the results of a 10-month Strategy Unit project looking at challenges facing the food industry. The statistics were impressive.

We were told that UK consumers pay for, but do not eat, £10bn of food every year, equivalent to £420 for every household (or £610 for families with children). Included in this bin-bag picnic are 7m slices of bread, 1m slices of ham, 4.4m apples and 1.3m yoghurts every day.

The Government report said that a third of all food bought for home consumption is wasted every year. This equates to 6.7m tonnes a year, much of which is binned simply due to over-zealous portions being handed out over Britain's kitchen tables.

But what does the food industry think? Is this yet another example of the Government trying to create a populist consumer-friendly agenda? Or is food wastage a serious issue that needs addressing?

Some supermarket executives were exasperated at the latest curve-ball thrown at them. Justin King, the chief executive of J Sainsbury, said that supermarkets should not be made scapegoats.

"To lay the entire cause of the world's food problems at a promotional mechanic [used by supermarkets] would be risible if it actually wasn't such a very serious subject," said Mr King. However, he also applauded Mr Brown's decision to raise the topic of food waste.

Sainsbury's, and other supermarkets, believes that the most effective way of reducing waste is to educate shoppers about storage, portion sizes and nutrition.

It is also about the stores themselves finding new ways to reduce wastage. WRAP, the body that helps businesses reduce waste, is working with supermarkets through its recently launched Love Food Hate Waste campaign.

Tesco, the UK's biggest retailer, said: "We agree completely with Gordon Brown that everybody should be doing their bit to reduce food waste - at Tesco we've been working hard for years to do just that.

" The retailer said that it would "never encourage customers to buy more fresh food than they can consume or freeze before its best-before date."

Other industry insiders argued that food wastage is just one issue of a far wider debate into the UK food chain. Andrew Opie, food director at the British Retail Consortium, said: "Although waste is an important issue for retailers it's only one part of the Cabinet Office's comprehensive food policy report."

Supermarkets argue that they throw out a very small amount of food. One supermarket executive said that no more than 6pc of the company's meat products are thrown out in bins at the back of the store.

Supermarkets have developed numerous ways of getting rid of the food. Firstly they cut prices sharply on the day before a product's sell-by date. This way, they hope to entice shoppers to buy it.

If this fails, food will generally be offered to store staff at rock-bottom prices. Failing this, many retailers, including Marks & Spencer, give food to charities. Store groups also send unwanted food to be converted into animal feed, for composting, or for conversion to bio-fuels. There are green alternatives aplenty.

According to Julian Walker-Palin, head of corporate policy for sustainability and ethics at Asda, the Wal-Mart owned supermarket, the chain is reviewing its use of promotions and packaging and also educating shoppers about portion sizes. Asda has a plan to send no waste to landfill by 2010.

Mr Walker-Palin says that Asda uses subtle methods to encourage shoppers to use up excess food. For example, its in-house magazine has recipes that would be useful for people with left-overs. Sainsbury's has a similar partnership with Good Housekeeping magazine called "Love Your Leftovers" to help shoppers use up scraps.

However, supermarkets' efforts to reduce wastage are arguably at odds with their raison d'etre. Supermarkets exist to help people feed their families at the cheapest price possible.

According to a major new piece of research by McCann Erickson, the ad agency, economic uncertainty is the topic on consumers' minds in 2008. Supermarkets will be more minded to pander to this than cave in to the concerns of the Government.

But retailers should beware. Yesterday environment minister Joan Ruddock said that she expects action from supermarkets.

"Government doesn't dictate to supermarkets how they should promote their products. However, we do suggest it's something to which they give careful thought. Consumers can exercise choice when making supermarket purchases and we hope this message will get through to them as well," she said.

Britain declares war on food waste

By Andrew Grice in Hokkaido, Japan

Monday, 7 July 2008

The Government is to launch a campaign to stamp out Britain's waste food mountains as part of a global effort to curb spiralling food prices.

Supermarkets will be urged to drop "three for two" deals on food that encourage shoppers into bulk-buying more than they need, often leading to the surpluses being thrown away. The scandal of the vast mountains of food that are thrown away in Britain while other parts of the world starve is revealed in a Cabinet Office report today. It calls for a reduction in food waste: up to 40 per cent of groceries can be lost before they are consumed due to poor processing, storage and transport.

The report says UK households could save an average of £420 per year by not throwing away 4.1 million tonnes of food that could have been eaten.

Gordon Brown said he would make action to tackle the soaring cost of food a priority at the G8 summit starting today in Japan. "If we are to get food prices down, we must do more to deal with unnecessary demand, such as by all of us doing more to cut our food waste which is costing the average household in Britain around £8 per week," he told journalists on board the plane to the summit.

Mr Brown's determination to act follows The Independent's campaign to reduce waste through excessive packaging of food in supermarkets. The Government is to launch a major offensive to encourage supermarkets, restaurants, schools and all public sector bodies as well as householders to try to cut down dramatically on the amount of food they throw away.

The key findings of the 10-month review are that:

* Global food prices have risen significantly in recent years due to a combination of poor harvests in some exporting countries; higher costs for energy, fertiliser and transport; the diversion of some commodities to biofuel; and a long-term rise in demand for grain to feed a growing global population;

* The average UK household now devotes about 9 per cent of its expenditure to food, down from 16 per cent in 1984. But the poorest 10 per cent of households in the UK saw 15 per cent of their expenditure go on food in 2005-06; the richest 10 per cent just 7 per cent. And low-income households also spend proportionately more on staples such as milk, eggs and bread – products that have seen some of the biggest price rises in recent months;

* The increase in global food prices has hit developing countries the hardest, with food accounting for 50 to 80 per cent of household expenditure of the poorest. Price rises have contributed to social unrest in a number of countries.

At his first G8 summit as Prime Minister, Mr Brown will argue that the world's richest nations must do more to tackle the food price crisis. He will urge them to halt the decline in funding for agricultural projects in Africa, so the continent can boost farm production by 6 per cent a year.

He will call for a rethink over the use of biofuels so they are used more selectively. A separate study to be published by the Department for Transport today will admit they have contributed to the rise in food prices because land has been switched from food production to plant-derived alternatives to petrol and diesel.

Mr Brown hopes the G8 leaders can unblock the stalled world trade talks, which could collapse in the next few weeks.

The Cabinet Office study concludes that urgent action is needed on the supply of and demand for food. "The solution lies in raising the potential of food production in the developing world," it says. "If yields in Africa and elsewhere reached their potential, global food output would be much higher, far fewer people would go hungry and social instability around the world would decrease."

Oxfam accused G8 leaders of an "inadequate and hypocritical" response to the food crisis. Phil Bloomer, its spokesman, said: "World leaders ... must reiterate their promises to increase aid ... and make the necessary reforms including increasing investment in agriculture in poor countries."

Supermarket Waste

British supermarkets could learn from the French

If I could find some statistics on supermarket waste in the UK, you would be absolutely gob-smacked. But these elusive figures are either being hidden, or simply don’t exist. The latter option is the worst, because it would imply that no-one cares about the millions of tons of food which are rejected, often for cosmetic reasons, every single day, by every single British supermarket.

I know that this rejection takes place, from my short time working on logistics for a lovely company who import (in the winter) and grow (in the summer) sweet peppers for British supermarkets. There was an astonishing volume of peppers being sent to the supermarket distribution centres, every day, but the amount of peppers which were either dumped before they left the pack house, or rejected by the supermarket buyers was equally surprising. And the most common reason for rejection? Rot? Damage? No: The colour! Orange peppers starting to turn red, or two-tone yellow and green peppers were not good enough for discerning British customers, EVEN IF THEY WERE GOING INTO PROCESSED FOODS!!

The pepper company, who took care to grow their high quality fruit using natural farming methods, such as bees for pollination, composted their wasted peppers, to give to local farmers, but what do the depots do, who are dealing with all manner of rejected foodstuffs?

A few of tonnes of peppers are thrown away each day, but that’s one single kind of fruit. Now multiply that by the number of other fruit and vegetables that you see in the supermarket. Then think of aaallll the other food products that the shop sells. That adds up to millions of tonnes of food going to waste, every day, often for no good reason.

Some people like to have multi-coloured peppers! Most people don’t want to be paying extra for their food, because the supermarket’s buyers reject so much decent stock, on the customer’s behalf, that prices have to rise to cover supplier’s costs. And I think most people would rather that colour-defficient food was given to hungry people, rather than thrown in a colossal bin.

From the supplier’s point of view, this wastage makes business very precarious. Profit margins are tiny enough as they are, and the daily stock rejections have a devastating impact. Suppliers rely on their valued but poorly-paid warehouse staff to stick to tight time schedules, and churn out stock by the crate-fulls with zero loss, wastage or mishaps.

Image-centred, consumerist Britain, could start accepting variable veg...? If it paid the same prices for this new, quirky style of food, the factory staff could earn better wages. Or, alternatively, the saving could be passed on to the customer, so that the poorly-paid factory staff could buy cheaper food for their families.

Another cause for stock rejections is obviously that of food which is past it’s best (or will be by the time it hits the shelves), or damaged. But with a system where food is sent on a 200 mile round-trip, just to get back to 20 miles from where it started, it’s hardly surprising that the things go off or get damaged! Supermarket logistics managers insist on central distribution centres, wherever their stock is destined for, and make no allowances for local distribution networks. Some transport companies - and fuel companies - will be making a fortune from this merry-go-round, but I’m not sure that fuel bosses need to be making many more piles of cash, whilst hauliers could start local divisions, if the market changed.

The hidden but phenomenal waste of supermarket food not only impacts the all-too distant ‘environment’, but also hurts the supermarket’s customers. It’s time to knock these retail giants down a shelf or two, and let them know what we want, rather than what they think we want. It’s time they stopped having such negative impacts on the whole structure of the UK economy. Hard work and carefully produced food have little value, but prices are kept high, anyway, to cover for the amount of stock that is considered rubbish. Not a single pepper, that has been planted as a seed, grown into a plant, born fruit, looked after, picked, sorted, packaged and delivered should be allowed to rot through inefficient transport systems, or garbaged due to ‘colour fade’.

The most frustrating thing is that I know lots of people, me included, who choose to support local produce in supermarkets. But does that really count as voting with our feet, if the local produce travelled as far as the non-local? How about, every time you go to the supermarket, your find their feedback box, and fill out a slip, complaining about the distribution network, lack of local produce, or the horrible uniformity of all the fruit and veg? And we could get all our friends to do the same? The managers will notice this trend, and pass the message on to their head office.

Or we could really try to stick to small, local retailers and producers, and our own vegetable patches or allotments.

Supermarket waste hits new high

1.6m tonnes of food goes to landfill each year, sustainability watchdog reports

By Susie Mesure
Sunday, 10 February 2008

The Government must get tougher with supermarkets if it is to tackle Britain's growing mountain of food waste, a report on Labour's sustainable food policies will warn this week.

The warning comes amid growing concern at the amount of food that ends up as landfill rather than on people's plates. Retailers generate 1.6 million tonnes of food waste each year.

An influential watchdog, the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC), will condemn targets set by the Government's waste-reduction programme as "unambitious and lacking urgency". It will also say multi-buy promotions are helping to fuel waste and obesity in Britain. Speaking to The Independent on Sunday ahead of the report's publication on Saturday, Tim Lang, SDC commissioner, said it was "ludicrous" that the Government had not pressured retailers into setting tougher targets to cut waste.

Three years ago, the government-funded Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap) left it up to supermarkets to find voluntary "solutions to food waste" in an agreement dubbed the Courtauld Commitment. "The Government is frankly not using its leverage adequately. It really should toughen up on Courtauld, which must be enforced because this is ludicrous," said Mr Lang, who is also professor of food policy at City University, London.

The 18-month study, which found that "too many supermarket practices are still unhealthy, unjust and unsustainable", said Wrap should adopt a "more aspirational approach to reducing waste in food retail by setting longer-term targets and [supporting] a culture of zero waste".

Richard Swannell, Wrap's director of retail and organic programmes, defended the Courtauld goals, set in 2005. "We couldn't set a target for reducing food waste because we didn't know what the scale of the problem was," he said. Instead, Wrap focused on reducing packaging waste – though even here the SDC report called its progress too slow. Mr Swannell said Wrap intended to unveil targets on cutting food waste by the summer.

The report comes at a critical time for Wrap, which is facing budget cuts of 25 per cent. Last week the body, which is campaigning to get consumers to throw less food away, issued 31 redundancy notices. Steve Webb, Liberal Democrat environment spokesman, attacked the cuts. "It blows a hole in any credibility the Government has on the environment," he said.

A separate study by Imperial College for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, found that supermarkets preferred to throw away food that was approaching its sell-by date rather than mark it down in price. "The cost of staff time is greater than the money made on the reduced items," the research found, citing a supermarket executive who said it cost the chain £11m a year in labour and lost margins to slash prices.

Andrew Simms, author of Tescopoly: How One Shop Came Out on Top and Why it Matters, said: "Supermarkets need to persuade people to be more frugal."

The £20bn food mountain: Britons throw away half of the food produced each year

20m tons of food is chucked out from homes and supermarkets, enough to meet half of Africa's food import needs. By Susie Mesure

Sunday, 2 March 2008

Britain is throwing away half of all the food produced on farms, according to the starkest estimate yet of the amount of edible produce we waste.

About 20m tons of food is thrown out each year: equivalent to half of the food import needs for the whole of Africa. Some 16m tons of this is wasted in homes, shops, restaurants, hotels and food manufacturing. Much of the rest is thought to be destroyed between the farm field and the shop shelf.

The total bill to the nation is estimated to be more than £20bn. The issue has come to the fore as supermarkets fight off criticism over billions of plastic carrier bags handed out free each year.

Lord Haskins of Skidby, a former government adviser on rural affairs and chairman of Northern Foods, said yesterday that tackling the mountain of food wasted in this country every year would help to preserve the environment and go some way towards feeding an expanding global population in the face of unprecedented food shortages.

In a move that illustrated the problem last week, Japan pledged more than 300m yen in food aid for Burundi, in Africa, where malnutrition runs at 44 per cent. The food thrown away in the UK last year would meet the equivalent of Burundi's shortages more than 40 times over.

Lord Haskins' estimate of the scale of food waste suggests the problem in the UK is far greater than previously imagined and came as global food prices hit new records. The United Nation's World Food Programme has admitted it might have to ration food aid in response to rocketing global food prices that have soared by more than 75 per cent since their lows of 2000, jumping by more than a fifth last year alone, prompting riots in some countries.

Consumers, in thrall to use-by dates and lured by supermarket multi-buy offers, are the biggest culprits, throwing away one-third of everything they buy, according to the Waste & Resources Action Programme, the Government's waste watchdog. The National Consumer Council will highlight the issue of buy-one-get-one-free promotions, which exacerbate the problem of food waste, in a campaign this spring.

Lord Haskins, whose former employer is one of Britain's largest food suppliers, urged governments to press their citizens to help "avoid disaster by dramatically reducing the ... unacceptable levels of food waste, which are a shameful feature of most modern consumer societies". He called recent controversy over supermarkets' free distribution of plastic bags "a red herring".

Tony Lowe, the chief executive of FareShare, the national food charity, said: "Unfortunately, we live in a world where many people do not have access to food in general, and good-quality food specifically, while at the same time millions of tons of perfectly fine food are being disposed of. In the UK alone, the extent of food poverty is staggering, as millions of people with low or no income find it harder to access affordable, nutritious food."

Estimates that the world's population will rise by 30 per cent over the next 50 years to around 8.5 billion have raised the spectre of a global food shortage too big for farmers to meet, Lord Haskins said. "If consumers ate a bit less and wasted a bit less you'd help to solve the problem. If the world was vegetarian then you'd solve the problem completely." One-third of wheat grown globally is fed to livestock reared to end up on the dinner table.

Experts believe that Lord Haskins might struggle to get people to listen. Tim Lang, food policy professor at City University, said: "Waste is a fundamental part of the food economy and it will be hard to get rid of. I do not see how simply appealing to morals will do it."

However, chefs, whom Lord Haskins berates for serving vast portions, claimed they do work hard to waste less. Michelin-starred Tom Aikens said: "It's morally wrong to throw away any food. To reduce waste you have to separate the food from the recycled objects so you can see the waste and then do something about it. If I could I would recycle the food waste, but unless regulations change or I can stick a wormery on my restaurant roof, then not a lot will change."

Supermarkets are very defensive on the subject of food waste. A Tesco spokesman said the retailer, which has not published figures showing how much it sends to landfill since 2004, wasted less than 1 per cent of its food each year. Waitrose, which alone of the big chains sells off "ugly" fruit and vegetables cheaply, said: "It is not in our business interests to produce any waste at all, so our branch managers work very hard to minimise it."

A spokesman for the British Retail Consortium said: "Retailers are working closely with suppliers to minimise waste through analysing the supply chain."

But Lord Haskins said supermarkets compound the issue of food wasted in the supply chain by giving suppliers far too little notice of their orders or cancelling orders at the last minute.

Help the planet...

The Independent on Sunday's top 10 tips to help you cut that food-waste mountain rotting in your bin:

1. Buy less if you don't think you can eat it: smaller joints, loose vegetables rather than pre-packed bags that are too big – and try not to fall for quite so many buy-one-get-one-free offers.

2. Use your imagination with leftovers: that half a roast-chicken would make a perfect pie, sandwich filling or form the basis for a salad.

3. Don't let vegetables rot in the bottom of the fridge: even older vegetables make decent soups, casseroles or curries.

4. Remember to cancel that vegetable box if you're going to be dining out a lot that week.

5. Don't over-order in restaurants; if you do, make like an American and ask for a doggy bag.

6. Use common sense rather than use-by dates when deciding what to throw away.

7. Become friends with your freezer: make your own frozen ready-meals with last night's leftovers or any food that you have overbought.

8. Whiz up older fruit into a smoothie or bake it in a pudding.

9. Look out for the new plastic bags that will give your vegetables a longer lease of life in your fridge.

10. Try and shop more frequently so that you buy what you need, rather than rely on one major shopping trip.

Gordon Brown urged to tackle supermarkets on food waste

Food campaigners today urged supermarkets to stop promoting unneccesary food purchases, following Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s statement [1] that consumers should waste less food [2], to keep the cost of living down.

“Gordon Brown is right to say that wasting good food also wastes money,” said Kath Dalmeny, Policy Director of Sustain: The alliance for better food and farming. “But he appears to point the finger of blame only at individuals, rather than telling supermarkets that they need to sharpen up their practices. There is huge waste throughout the food supply chain, caused by ‘buy one get one free’ promotions, and cosmetic standards for fresh produce.”

“Supermarkets bombard shoppers with messages to buy more and eat more, with highly persuasive price promotions,” continued Kath Dalmeny. “The promotions are carefully designed to prompt impulse purchases. Shoppers end up buying products that they did not plan to, and a lot of that food goes to waste.”

“We also know of farmers who have had to throw away up to a fifth of their crop just because supermarkets say the fruit or veg is the wrong colour, size or shape,[3]” she continued. “There is huge waste even before the food gets to the supermarket shelf. Gordon should use his influence with the supermarkets to prevent this.”

Between one fifth and one third of all greenhouse gas emissions are caused by the food we eat. Throwing away perfectly edible food effectively wastes all the energy, fuel and farm inputs that have been used to create that food in the first place.

Sustain, an alliance of organisations working to promote better food and farming, welcomed the Cabinet Office report, saying that government leadership is needed to make the food chain more fair and less environmentally damaging. Sustain agrees with the report’s analysis that “Despite the progress made, we are still a long way from having an environmentally sustainable food chain.[4]”

Supermarkets Tell Us About Price Cuts - but Can They Cut Waste?

Posted on: Thursday, 24 July 2008, 00:00 CDT

According to statisticians, one third of the food we buy ends up in landfill.

And that waste is costing each of our households around pounds420 per year - and causing serious damage to the environment.

Being fiscally prudent, taking individual responsibility to decrease food waste, and caring for the environment are noble causes, but what about the mountains of wasted grub churned out by the supermarket industry?

While households throw out an estimated 6.7 million tonnes of food per annum, a report this year by the Sustainable Development Commission revealed that retailers themselves dump 1.6 million tonnes of the stuff into landfill each year.

The 18-month study found that many supermarket practices are still unhealthy, unjust and unsustainable.

A separate study by Imperial College for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, found that supermarkets preferred to throw away food that was approaching its sell-by date, rather than mark it down in price, because the cost of staff time was greater than the money made on the reduced items.

Given these findings, some of the responsibility for the UK's food waste lies with supermarkets, as well as with consumers.

But what are the multi-national retailers doing to reduce waste? The Echo put this question to three supermarket chains in Exeter, the Co-op, Sainsbury's and Marks & Spencer.

With increased media pressure and public awareness, the supermarkets say they are now doing more to tackle the problem.

While some offer reductions on food nearing its sell-by date, others monitor consumer demand, and two supermarkets said they give some surplus food to local charities.

Marks and Spencer said they have various measures in place to reduce food waste, such as moving the sell-by date and use-by dates closer together on perishable goods to increase the amount of time customers have to buy products.

"We also sell food products that are on their last display date at a reduced price - a move that could help us cut food waste from stores by 10 per cent," said Marks & Spencer spokesman Jo Pinate.

"We offer close to sell-by date food products to staff at a discounted rate and donate any remaining products to charities, both on a national level via Fareshare and on a local level to hostels, charities and farms.

"Over the last year, nearly half the waste generated has been recycled or reused and we are also trialling the collection of food waste for electricity generation, composting and anaerobic digestion."

Meanwhile, The Co-op, which sends around 35,000 tonnes of food to landfill each year, said it was minimising waste levels by using special sales prediction technology.

A spokesman for the Co-operative Group said: "The technology brings stock into store to meet anticipated demand on a daily basis.

"This process is carefully managed and also leads to a reduction in the actual number of products reaching their sell-by dates.

"Any products nearing their sell-by date are reduced in price to encourage a quick sale, in order to minimise wastage levels.

"Products which reach their sell-by date cannot be sold and these are sent to landfill, other than oil and fat and raw meats, which are sent to bio-fuel manufacturers and rendering companies."

At Sainsbury's, food near, or on, its sell-by date is either reduced and put on sale, or used in the staff canteen for staff meals.

"We prefer to offer our customers a price reduction rather than throw away food," said Sainsbury's spokesman Cheryl Kuczynski.

"Food that isn't sold to customers and colleagues, used in the colleague canteen, or sent to charity, is sent for composting and anaerobic digestion. We have reduced food waste considerably and constantly strive to avoid it."

Like the Co-op, Sainsbury's uses sales figures and economic data to predict consumer demand and decrease the amount of food that eventually gets scrapped.

Seasonal influences can also affect sales.

"Hot pies and soups sell well in winter, whereas salads and barbecue products sell well in summer, and this affects product lines," said Cheryl.

"Celebrities such as Jamie Oliver hugely affect consumer demand and sales too.

"Following the current Jamie Oliver salmon fish cake TV ad, sales of our Basics salmon fillets have increased by more than 200 per cent."

Sainsbury's also works with a number of charities, such as Fareshare, Food For All and the Salvation Army, which benefit from surplus food that might otherwise have gone to landfill.

In Exeter, Sainsbury's in the Guildhall gives food that is beyond its sell-by date, but within its use-by date, to St Petrock's, a shelter for the homeless in the city centre, and to a local swan and bird sanctuary.

"In the last year, Sainsbury's has donated pounds3.3m or 6,300 tonnes worth of food to these organisations," said Cheryl.

While the store says it is trying to decrease food waste, Cheryl says this has to be balanced with Sainsbury's other priority - to always provide customers with the food they want.

Supermarkets do share some of the burden for the UK's food waste problem, but it is largely consumers who steer the market.

Spoilt for choice, we expect the products we want to always line the aisle shelves - and for supermarkets to meet these demands.

If the UK is serious about reducing food waste, supermarkets and consumers will need to work together.

Food waste in the UK - consider the Food Mileage

A handful of people in the UK, are living off of discarded food and such, without being poor or homeless. To prevent waste and to encourage others to do the same. In order to keep prices high, the food is disposed, and in extreme cases the disposed food is locked and protected. Yes -the waste is prevented from being used practically. The food is often still fresh and even hermetically sealed. Wanna help the poor and the starving? Then don't you dare discard any food that is still edible. Any food. Not even a grain of rice or a strip of french fries. It doesn't stop with you. Every food scrap has to be disposed, the vessels cleanied, the sanitation kept up, the municipal compost turned by machines or the landfill added by machines. Every drop of water matters. Every piece of food that adds to your life is to be eaten. We shall benefit from it all.
