IK heb op deze blog al herhaaldelijk gewezen op de grote poëtische zeggingskracht waarvan het werk van de Ierse dichter Francis Ledwidge (1887-1917) getuigt. Binnen acht dagen zal het precies 100 jaar geleden zijn dat hij in Boezinge aan flarden werd gereten door een Duitse artilleriegranaat. Vandaag breng ik u zijn gedicht 'Home'. Hij schreef dit weemoedige gedicht vol heimwee naar de glooiende heuvels van het Groene Eiland in het Ieperse in juli 1917 en het was naar alle waarschijnlijkheid het laatste gedicht dat hij ooit schreef. Her verscheen voor het eerst in de bundel 'The Complete Poems of Francis Ledwidge' die in 1919 door toedoen van Ledwidges mentor Lord Dunsany in Londen verscheen.

Each soldier was a painfully vulnerable individual who suffered in awful conditions while waiting with heavy foreboding to discover his fate. Hundreds of thousands of men lost their lives, their limbs or their sanity in this vortex of despair. It was an expiernce most survivors never forgot until death or the confusions of extreme old age brought down the curtain on their minds...'
