BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- With Royal Rumble looming a week from Sunday, Undertaker kicked off SmackDown by grabbing the ring mic and issuing a grim warning: In nine days, I will step into the ring at Royal Rumble. If you stand before me, you will fall before me. If you enter that ring, you will rest in peace!
After Undertakers rare appearance on the mic, Matt Striker and Big Daddy V came down the ramp to have their say in the matter. While the quarter-ton ECW mastodon sneered at Undertaker, Striker -- still recovering from last weeks Tombstone -- asked The Phenom, How do you plan to move this man over the tope rope and onto the floor?! Things soon escalated, with Undertaker and V exchanging blows. The two stopped before a full blown battle ensued, but next week, these beasts will collide in the middle of the ring on SmackDown. (WATCH)
First time on network TV Although they squared off at Armageddon, this was the first time Khali and Finlay met up on SmackDown. With revenge on his mind, Khali dominated the Irishman for most of the match and finished him off with his brutal Vise Grip. (WATCH)
After the match, the Chairman had a little talk with Finlay, who was supposed to take care of Khali, but Khali took care of you, he said. To potentially give Finlay the advantage against the Punjabi giant, Mr. McMahon lined up a Belfast Brawl street fight between the two next week on the debut of SmackDown in HD. (WATCH)
Very, Very VIP Sixteen-time World Champion Ric Flair made an appearance on MVPs VIP Lounge to talk about his upcoming Royal Rumble match against the United States Champion. After trading verbal barbs about who really is THE man, Flair smacked MVP in the chest, knocking him to the mat. (WATCH) Will Flair be forced into retirement at Royal Rumble? Or, will he put the younger MVP in his place?
Ready to Rumble Batista winner of the 2005 Royal Rumble looked to be on form for the 30-man over-the-top rope war by taking out The Worlds Strongest Man, Mark Henry. The Animal roared and appeared more than ready for the Rumble. But, with his massive size and strength, Henry will surely not go over the ropes without a fight next Sunday.
Caught in the middle In Diva action, Michelle McCool defeated Layla and was later surprised to find a bouquet of flowers for her in the locker room area. At first, Michelle thought Jamie Noble got them for her, but Chuck Palumbo quickly stepped in to explain he gave the flowers an effort to get back in McCools good graces for his actions on last weeks SmackDown. Stuck between the two testosterone-pumped Superstars, McCool had to play mediator to get them to agree to all get along.
Redneck & Reject roll on In other SmackDown action, Deuce & Domino wore down Shannon Moore & Jimmy Wang Yang. But in the end, it was a moonsault press from Yang to Domino that helped give his team the win.
One big, happy family? SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero continued to express her love for World Heavyweight Champion Edge. In a shocking display of affection backstage, Chavo Guerrero decided to make amends for the things he said about his aunt, Vickie. As he put his arms around both Vickie and Edge for a group hug, he asked, What do you say the three of us become one, big happy family?
Later in the ring, things got even more physical as The Rated-R Superstar and Chavo took on Rey Mysterio & ECW Champion CM Punk. At the end of the bout, Edge viciously attacked Mysterio with a steel chair to the knee, which immediately earned his team the loss by DQ. After the match, the Ultimate Opportunist and his cohorts, Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder, dished out more punishment.
Last night's TNA Impact on Spike TV set a TNA viewership record with 1.623 million viewers, translating to a rating of 1.22. ECW on Sci-Fi drew a 1.1 rating, so Impact outdrew ECW by 10 percent. Impact had never outdrawn ECW before.
The Global Impact one-hour special that followed drew a solid viewership of 949,000, although a significant drop-off from the usual two hour Impact.
There are several major news items to report from Thursdays iMPACT! on SpikeTV:
- The big news coming out of the broadcast is the revelation that maniacal manager James Mitchell is actually the father of Abyss! If Abyss didnt come clean with the secret on Thursday, Mitchell promised the world he would do it himself. Following Abyss vs. Lance Hoyt, Mitchell commandeered a camera crew and let the secret out to the entire world. After Mitchell said this, Abyss apparently had a breakdown and left the arena without offering comment.
- In the three-way main event for a shot at Kurt Angles TNA World Heavyweight Championship, Christian Cage won the bout over Samoa Joe and AJ Styles. Samoa Joe was disqualified during the bout for using a steel chair, leaving Cage and AJ to battle it out. However, the referee was wrong to DQ Joe, as AJ actually used the chair, not Joe. Later, Cage got the win and some revenge over Styles, earning The Instant Classic another shot against Angle at the February Against All Odds Pay-Per-View.
- Also on Thursday, Black Machismo Jay Lethal and The Motor City Machineguns officially accepted the Street Fight challenge at Against All Odds from Team 3D and Johnny Devine. If Lethal and the Machineguns win, Lethal gets the X Championship back. If Team 3D and Devine win, the X Division will cease to exist in TNA!
- In Womens Division action, ODB beat Angelina Love in a singles bout. After the win, ODB challenged Awesome Kong for a shot at the TNA Womens Championship at Against All Odds!
- Kip James demanded that BG James reveal who his partner would be for his upcoming TNA World Tag Team Championship shot, which BG did on Thursday night. BG finally revealed that his choice was his own father, the legendary Bullet Bob Armstrong! After the reveal, Kip agreed with the decision and hugged Bullet Bob, the man Kip considers a second father.
- In singles action, one-half of the TNA World Tag Team Champions Tomko beat Eric Young. Following the bout, Cowboy James Storm tried to take back his drinking title from EY, but Tomko put a stop to that and backed up Young.
- Also on iMPACT!, Robert Roode (with his new CEO Ms. Peyton Banks) defeated The Guru Sonjay Dutt. After the match, Ms. Brooks hit the ring to get some revenge on Banks, but Roode stopped her. However, before Roode could inflict any damage on Brooks, Matt Morgan came out to even the odds and chase off Roode.
- In addition, cameras were at Shark Boys home to update fans on his medical condition after months of constant punishment and falling into a coma. However, in an amazing turn of events, Shark Boy emerged from his coma during the broadcast but he was speaking in a strange Texas accent and swearing like a sailor! Check back next week for an update on Shark Boy!
-- Brian Fritz of the Orlando Sentinel noted in one of his recent columns that former WWE Hardcore Champion Mick Foley will be retiring this year. Foley had talked about his match with Jonathan Coachman on television being his last match, but also pitched an idea for after WrestleMania 24. Mick was also recently involved in a match with Hornswoggle on RAW.
Foley originally retired from World Wrestling Entertainment in 2000, with the idea that he would still appear once or twice a year. With his knee and back problems, Foley is said to be mentally ready to be finished for good.
WWE Tag Team Champions The Miz & John Morrison def. The Highlanders Kane def. Colin Delaney Shelton Benjamin def. Nunzio Chavo Guerrero def. ECW Champion CM Punk
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Shelton Benjamin once again proved hes ECWs Gold Standard on Tuesday night when he defeated Nunzio. Aint no stopping me now! Benjamin proclaimed after his victory. It seems Benjamin really is speaking the truth.
Since making his ECW debut last November, Benjamin has been undefeated. Whats next for the three-time Intercontinental Champion and two-time Tag Team Champion who has secured a spot in the Royal Rumble? Clearly, Benjamins eyes are set on gold in 2008.
The Highlanders paid a visit to the Land of the Extreme on Tuesday night, facing off against WWE Tag Team Champions The Miz & Morrison. The Tag Champs, who successfully defended their titles last week on ECW, once again reigned supreme, beating Rory & Robbie McAllister in non-title competition.
Colin Delaney returned to ECW for the fourth time when he faced another one of SmackDowns giants, Kane, on Tuesday night. The Big Red Machine quickly demolished Delaney. Will the youngster have enough guts to revisit the Land of the Extreme for a fifth time?
Also on ECW, our fans caught another glimpse of Kofi Kingston, the Jamaican Superstar who has promised to bring trouble to paradise. Kingston will finally make landfall on ECW next week. Just what does he have in store for Tuesday nights? (WATCH)
Finally, World Champion Edge brought his Cutting Edge talk show to ECW, featuring special guest, ECW Champion CM Punk. Later that night, Edge nailed Punk with the World Heavyweight Championship, and Guerrero finally beat Punk to become the No. 1 contender for the ECW Title. (WATCH) Read more
This Week's WWE Raw Rating Rises Posted by Andy Steven on 01/15/2008 at 07:10 PM
(Source - PWTorch)
This weeks edition of WWE Monday Night Raw scored a 3.6 overall rating. This is in line with the recent average ratings. A year ago this week, WWE Raw scored a 4.1 rating for the second week running. The year before that in 2006 and in 2005, the show scored a 4.3 and a 3.6. The last time WWE Raw scored a lower rating on this week of the year was 10 years ago in 1998. With that said, this week's rating is an improvement from last weeks disappointing 3.2 which was Raws lowest rating in several years.
Beth Phoenix, Melina & Jillian def. Mickie James, Ashley & Maria Shawn Michaels def. Trevor Murdoch (Royal Rumble qualifying match) Snitsky def. Triple H (Disqualification) Hornswoggle def. mini-Mr. Kennedy, mini-Mankind, mini-Batista and mini-Kane Ric Flair def. William Regal Jeff Hardy vs. Randy Orton (No contest)
MOBILE, Ala. Triple H may be down, but hes nowhere near out. The King of Kings learned Monday night from Mr. McMahon that, despite seemingly being eliminated from Royal Rumble contention, he may still be able to qualify.
The new lease on life comes two weeks after Triple H lost by disqualification to Ric Flair thanks to William Regals interference in a match that cost him his spot at the Rumble and also set him back on his quest to recapture the WWE Championship.
Monday night, though, The Game unleashed his frustration and fury on his opponent, Snitsky. After losing by disqualification, an enraged Triple H unsheathed his faithful sledgehammer and mercilessly pummeled Snitsky.
At the end of The Games therapy, the Chairmans image flashed onto a screen overlooking the arena, prompting the irate warrior to hurl his weapon at the screen, triggering sparks to rain onto the stage below.
The Chairman later caught up with his nemesis to give him an earful. He informed Triple H that his blind rage had made him too unpredictable. To calm him, Mr. McMahon told The Game that were he to win his match next week, he would put him back in the Rumble.
However, there was one catch: The Chairman offered no clue as to who The Game might face or what type of bout he would be competing in. Theres little doubt that the match will prove an enormous hurdle, but when someone tosses you a lifeline, you tend not to ask what type of rope theyre using. WATCH
Ladies Night Divas Ashley, Mickie James and Maria went up against the team of Jillian, Melina and Women's Champion Beth Phoenix. After a dazzling performance by Mickie, the Glamazon finally pinned her for the three-count after a Fisherman's Suplex.
Qualifying Statement Shawn Michaels battled Trevor Murdoch in a Royal Rumble qualifying match. Despite his desire to face Mr. Kennedy instead, the two-time Rumble winner and last years runner-up nonetheless defeated Murdoch to earn his spot in the match. HBK will have to wait until next week to face Kennedy, who accepted his request for a rematch. WATCH
Y2JBL JBL used the occasion of his own second coming his second Raw arrival ceremony to taunt his Rumble opponent, Chris Jericho. After attacking Y2J with an electrical cord last week, the Lonestar Loudmouth used his words to pour more fuel onto their already fiery rivalry. WATCH
Dwarf Star In preparation for the Royal Rumble, Mr. McMahon arranged a Mini Royal Rumble Match for his son, Hornswoggle, complete with mini-versions of Mr. Kennedy, Kane, Batista and Mankind. In a positive sign for the leprechaun, he tossed all four out of the ring. The Great Khali then came down to rain on Hornswoggle's parade until his fellow Irishman, Finlay, stepped in to stop him. WATCH
Career Advancement Add William Regal to the list. After defeating Randy Orton, Umaga and Triple H to keep his career alive, Ric Flair maintained his winning streak by defeating the Raw GM and overcoming Mr. McMahons win-or-retire ultimatum for yet another week. Flair can now look forward to facing MVP at Royal Rumble in a Career Threatening Match. WATCH
Carried Away In a preview to their Royal Rumble WWE title match, Randy Orton faced off against his rival Jeff Hardy. After the two traded a series of increasingly vicious blows outside of the ring, Hardy climbed the Raw set and landed a precariously high-flying maneuver onto Orton, resulting in both men being carried away on gurneys. Breaking news: The Big Show making his return? Posted by Bobby Spade on 01/13/2008 at 12:05 AM
Source: The Wrestling Observer Newsletter
We reported earlier that The Wrestling Observer Newsletter had noted a big name of WWE's past - a multi-champion superstar was set to return with the company.
The January 14 edition of the Newsletter confirms that former multi-time WWE Champion Paul Wight - The Big Show - has either signed with the company or has agreed to a deal, and will be starting full-time very soon.
Big Show is down to 440 lbs after leaving pro wrestling to rest, and pursue a possible career in boxing, which obviously included boxing training that got him in quite a good shape. Dave Meltzer also mentions in the Observer that a part of his boxing deal was that Hulk Hogan was to be his "front man" acting like a manager in wrestling for him by doing promos and appearances. This was also the main reason many boxing promoters were actually interested in Big Show and paying him so much money to learn the sport. These plans, however, fell apart at some point, and Show realized that at his age, boxing might not be the right direction to go anyway...
Friday nights edition of WWE SmackDown! scored a 2.9 overnight rating. The shows hours scored a 2.8 in the first hour and a 3.0 in the second hour. This is a slight improved from last weeks 2.8 overall rating.
Ron "The Truth" Killings has signed with World Wrestling Entertainment. Killings is a 2-time former NWA World champion. He wrestled for WWE briefly back in 2001 as "K-Kwick".
Killings was also telling people at an indy show he was on last week that he was going to sign the contract World Wrestling Entertainment offered him. His deal is an $80,000 per year downside guarantee, thus meaning that he will bypass developmental and head straight for the main roster upon his arrival.
Jamie Noble def. Chuck Palumbo (Royal Rumble Qualifying Match) Batista def. United States Champion MVP (Non-title, Count-out) Undertaker def. Matt Striker & Mark Henry (Handicap Match) Hornswoggle def. Ranjin Singh (Arm Wrestling Contest) Kane def. Domino Rey Mysterio def. Chavo Guerrero
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. After being cheated out of winning the Beat the Clock Challenge last week on SmackDown by special guest referee Matt Striker, Undertaker came into his SmackDown Handicap Match against Striker & Mark Henry with retribution on his mind. While The Phenom found a measure of that revenge when he delivered a Tombstone to Striker for the victory, he was quickly assaulted by Big Daddy V & the Worlds Strongest Man. Not one to be denied, Undertaker managed to fight off the half-ton of humanity. (WATCH) Will Big Daddy V, Henry & Striker continue to target The Deadman as he heads toward the Royal Rumble?
Walk the walk As announced earlier in the week on WWE.com, United States Champion MVP will look to end the career of Ric Flair at Royal Rumble when the two face off in a Career Threatening Match with the Nature Boys livelihood at stake. Well before that, however, former Flair protégé Batista took issue with the Ballin Superstar on SmackDown. The Animal may have won the match by count-otu after knocking MVP to the floor, but the Franchise Playas night wasnt finished. He grabbed a steel chair to try and decimate Batista, but The Animal erupted and laid the U.S. Champion out with a spear. (WATCH)
Shocking the competition While Ranjin Singh claimed that he strictly followed the training regimen of The Great Khali prior to an Arm Wrestling Contest against Hornswoggle, it was the power of the mind that would give Mr. McMahons illegitimate son the upper hand for the win. With Finlay in his corner armed with an electro-shock device for extra protection Hornswoggle took full advantage of his opportunity and secured another improbable victory. The Punjabi giant didnt like the outcome, however, and tried to devastate the pint-sized prankster after the contest. But as has been the case recently, the Irishman made sure Khali did not have the chance, nailing him with a steel chair to chase him off.
The best of intentions Jamie Noble defeated Chuck Palumbo for the fourth time in as many tries, this time in a Royal Rumble Qualifying Match. (WATCH) Noble now will head to the Rumble, while Chuck appears to be headed toward a breakdown. After the loss, the revved-up Superstar once again took out all his angst on good friend Michelle McCool. The All-American Diva was embarrassed by her supposed confidants verbal bashing, and the friendship appears to be on the rocks. Jamie Noble showed his chivalrous side, however, and McCool once again seemed to appreciate the kindness.
Getting fired up Earlier in the week on WWE.com, Kane was named one of the 30 participants in this years Royal Rumble Match, and he showed why he is one of the most feared Rumble competitors when he dismantled Domino on SmackDown. As Kane readies himself to make another Rumble impact, Domino and his partner Deuce are still looking for their first victory of 2008.
Family business While General Manager Vickie Guerrero tried to congratulate Rey Mysterio on becoming No. 1 contender to her lover Edge and the World Championship, Rey voiced his displeasure with Vickies public relationship with the Rated-R Superstar. Chavo Guerrero interrupted to voice concerns with not just the GMs relationship, but also with Rey. When all was said and done, Vickie made a match between longtime rivals Rey and Chavo, one that Edge took a ringside seat for.

- Samoa Joe arrived to iMPACT! looking for TNA management director Jim Cornette to punish Kevin Nash for what he did to Joe at the PPV, but Cornette told Joe to solve the mess himself. Later, Joe and Nash had a heated argument in the back where Nash told Joe he was the punk not Nash. Nash told Joe to stop talking and start going after what he wants in TNA!
- Also looking for revenge on the broadcast was Christian Cage, who announced early on that AJ Styles was his number-one target for costing him his chance at the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. Later in the broadcast, Cage came out to confront AJ during an in-ring ceremony where Kurt Angle crowned AJ his Prince. However, before Cage could unleash his anger Samoa Joe hit the arena as well to demand a shot at the World Title. Jim Cornette eventually came out to put a stop to shouting match and announced that next week, it will be Cage vs. Styles vs. Joe on iMPACT! with the winner facing Kurt Angle for the World Championship at Against All Odds. However, if AJ wins, he has the choice of facing Angle or letting the champ rest until Lockdown in April!
- On the broadcast, Robert Roode addressed accidentally striking Sharmell at the Final Resolution Pay-Per-View. According to Roode, she was in the wrong place at the weong time and it was Bookers fault that he didnt protect her. Later in the broadcast, footage aired from earlier in the week of Booker T at the hospital with Sharmell. Booker promised that all his anger would now be directed towards Robert Roode. After the footage aired, Roode officially fired Ms. Brooks from Robert Roode Inc, and then actually tried to wrestle her! Jim Cornette came out and put a stop to the match and told Brooks to leave the arena to get away from Roode. However, before she could leave she was attacked by Roodes mystery fan at ringside! As the blonde pummeled Brooks, Roode held off Cornette and TNA security with a steel chair, then Roode revealed her name was Ms. Peyton Banks!
- The Motor City Machineguns (Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley) defeated Primetime Elix Skipper and Senshi.
- In a mixed match, The Latin American Xchange and their newest addition the lovely Salinas defeated Lance Hoyt, Jimmy Rave and Christy Hemme.
- Tomko obliterated Shark Boy in singles action after the bout Shark Boy was taken out on a stretcher!
- The maniacal Judas Mesias continued his path of destruction by beating Wildcat Chris Harris. During the bout, manager James Mitchell announced that Abyss has until next week to tell the world his secret or Mitchell will reveal it himself!
- Team 3D and Johnny Devine made a challenge for a Street Fight at Against All Odds to Black Machismo Jay Lethal and the Motor City Machineguns on the broadcast if Machismo and the Machineguns wins, they can have the X Championship back. However, if Team 3D wins the X Division will cease to exist in TNA Wrestling!
- The team of Petey Williams and Sonjay Dutt were able to defeat the Voodoo Kin Mafia in tag team action. During the bout, Scott Steiner came out and switched his Feast Or Fired case with Petey, leading to Williams giving chase. After Sonjay got the win, Kip James yelled at BG James that he demanded to know who his new tag team partner is next week.
Gail Kim suffered a minor concussion on Monday in the TNA Knockouts title bout against Awesome Kong. Reports that she suffered a leg injury at the Final Resolution PPV are 100% false.
