WWE has announced that indie star Kevin Steen has been signed to NXT. He did a Q&A with WWE's website. Below are a few highlights:
WWE.COM: Fans who know you love you, but many WWE fans might not be familiar with you. How would you describe your style?
STEEN: I think Im pretty apt at every style. I can do highflying and that kind of surprises people, considering my size. I can do technical wrestling as well. I guess my specialty would be brawling, but Ive been known to dip into whatever I need throughout my career, so I think Im pretty versatile.
WWE.COM: Youve probably been on the WWE radar for some time. What do you think ultimately led to your signing?
STEEN: William Regal came to a wrestling show I was taking part in in California almost a year ago exactly, I believe it was Aug. 31 of last year, and it was for PWG, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. The match I had that night, I think did a lot. I had never met William Regal before; I didnt know him at all. I had great respect for him already; hes actually been one of my favorite wrestlers for quite some time. To have him watch my match and take the time to tell me what he thought and give me advice was already great, but then a couple days later, I was contacted to see if I wanted to be part of a tryout camp. Just to have somebody like William Regal have enough esteem for me to go as far as to actually recommend me for a tryout meant a lot. Then I went to the tryout camp and I got through it, and what made me stand out were the promos, where we basically had to sell ourselves verbally. Thats always been one of my strong suits the way I talk and what I say. I make it count, and I think that went pretty far in getting me to where I am now.
Former WWE and WCW star Konnan has been tweeting about Alberto Del Rio's WWE departure and how Rey Mysterio is currently tied up in a contract dispute with the company. Konnan says they would love to have Del Rio in Mexico's AAA promotion and want to talk with him after he's completely free from WWE.
Here are some of Konnan's tweets:
"Should be no surprise what happened to Del Rio..There has always been rampant racism in the industry from subtle to obvious..#Putos"
"@WWE u released @RRWWE u f***ed @VivaDelRio now #Free @reymysterio #Putos #NoValenVergs"
"Ray deserves more respect, he's given WWE everything bar the kitchen sink #FreeRey"
Konnan also tweeted Cody Barbierri, the WWE.com social media worker that reportedly made a racist remark to Del Rio, leading to Del Rio assaulting him and then being released. Konnan wrote:
"@CodyBarbierri don't even think by a longshot this is over..#RazaIsWatching #Cuidate"
Another fan asked Konnan how does he know that the whole Del Rio incident isn't a work. He replied:
"because i talked to ADR and racism is still rampant in the industry"
We noted before that Ricardo Rodriguez asked for his WWE release as he had been frustrated and wanted to be a wrestler.
Ricardo had been wrestling as El Local with Kalisto in NXT but when he got injured, Sin Cara was given the spot with Kalisto.
There were also issues with Ricardo's physique not being up to WWE's standards. They reportedly set a weight goal that they wanted him at and in their mind, he was having trouble keeping to it.
Rodriguez was working under both a talent contract and an announcers contract. When he was released, his talent contract had just two weeks left on it. He had been doing some Spanish language broadcasts but with budget cuts ongoing, a three-man Spanish broadcast team was too much.
We noted last week that the new wrestler being teased by TNA is none other than women's wrestler Jessicka Havok. A leaked photo from a TNA program has surfaced online and shows Havok in her first official TNA photo. It lists her finisher as Air Raid Crash and her Twitter handle as @HavokTNA. That account is registered but not being used yet.
If TNA taped everything in order this week, Havok will debut on the September 11th episode by attacking Gail Kim and Taryn Terrell. She will appear again on the September 18th episode by interrupting the Knockouts calendar cover reveal. Havok makes her in-ring debut on the September 25th No Surrender episode in a Knockouts Battle Royal to determine a new #1 contender.
This wasn't announced at the tapings but it appears they are building to Havok vs. Gail Kim for the Knockouts Title at Bound For Glory. It was noted by our correspondents that Havok was already over in a big way, at least with the New York City crowd at this week's tapings.
