Deze avond was er in het televisieprogramma Des Racines et des Ailes, een unieke bijdrage over de Camargue. Er werd daarin o.a. aandacht besteed aan de zoutwinningsgebieden bij Aigues Mortes. Vorige zomer tuften wij rond in een toeristentreintje door dit onwaarschijnlijke en sprookjesachtige landschap. Rose water, zilverglinsterende zoutkristallen op de grond - het witte goud, zoals de zoutwinners het zelf noemen - bergen zout... en dan het panoramische zicht op de versterkte stad Aigues Mortes. Een aanrader voor wie er nog niet is geweest.
Aigues Mortes is an old city, by the Meditteranean Sea. They produce salt, that is to say... the sea produces salt and men collect it. A very complicated systems of lakes, shallow water, embankments, sunshine, sluices and a very specific alga makes the water to evaporate, turn pink (!) and make salt! We spent a very interesting, enchanting and warm couple of hours in this area. Just one small area of The Camargue. You should see the rest...
