The Mar-Keys is een Amerikaanse soulband, oorspronkelijk uit Memphis, Tennessee, opgericht in 1958. Het was de eerste studiosessieband voor Stax Records. Zij vormden de basis voor het typische Memphis soul geluid in het begin van de jaren zestig. De groep bestond uit: Steve Cropper (gitaar), Charlie Freeman (gitaar), Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass), Jerry Lee "Smoochie" Smith (saxofoon), Charles "Packy" Axton (tenorsax), Don Nix (saxofoon), Terry Johnson (piano) en Wayne Jackson (trombone en trompet).
De groep begon in 1958 op de Messick High School onder de naam the Royal Spades. In de jaren' 60 begonnen ze samen met Rufus Thomas en Carla Thomas en andere muzikanten van Satellite Records liedjes op te nemen als studio sessiegroep voor dit lsbel. De oprichters van deze platenmaatschappij waren respectievelijk de moeder (Estelle Axton) en de oom (Jim Stewart) van Charles Axton. Ze veranderden hun naam van The Royal Spades in The Mar-Keys en scoorden hun eerste -en enige- instrumentale hit Last Night in 1961. De Mar-Keys was een variatie op het woord 'tent'(marquee), verwijzend naar de tent buiten de Stax studio's.
Toen Satellite Records de naam veranderde in Stax Records werden The Bar- Keys de eerste studio sessieband van deze platenmaatschappij, hoewel ze zelf ook singles bleven uitbrengen zoals Pop-Eye Walk, After Morning en Philly Dog. De groep kreeg langzamerhand andere bandleden: Wayne Jackson, Andrew Love en Joe Arnold gingen meespelen en af en toe kwamen Booker T. Jones en Isaac Hayes de band vergezellen in de studio. Nadat ze in de studio muziek hadden gespeeld en hadden getoerd met Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd, Otis Redding en andere grote namen van Stax Records ging de groep in 1971 officieel uit elkaar.
Steve Cropper en Duck Dunn gingen spelen bij Booker T. & the M.G.'s als sessiegroep in de studio van Stax Records totdat ze gingen toeren met de The Blues Brothers Band in 1978.
Packy Axton, vormde zijn eigen groep the Packers die een hit in 1965 hadden met Hole In The Wal In 1976 stierf Axton aan kanker. In de jaren 60 hadden Wayne Jackson en Andrew Love een eigen groep met de naam The Memphis Horns.
Don Nix begon een solocarrière en produceerde platen voor Freddie King, Jeff Beck en Sport Lewi.

Ralf Bendix, geboren als Karl Heinz Schwab (Dortmund, 16 augustus 1924) was een Duitse zanger en producer. Hij is vooral bekend van zijn hit Babysitter-Boogie.
Ralf Bendix werd op 16 augustus 1924 als Karl Heinz Schwab geboren in Dortmund. Hij heeft zowel de studie rechten als economie gedaan, die hij financierde door als jazzgitarist op te treden. In 1952 haalde hij zelfs zijn doctorstitel in de economie. Daarnaast was hij directeur van de Düsseldorfse afdeling van luchtvaartmaatschappij Trans World Airlines.
In 1955 won Ralf een talentenjacht en in 1956 brak hij door in Duitsland met de #2-hit Sie hieß Mary-Anne. Hij maakte vooral Duitstalige covers van populaire Italiaanse en Amerikaanse nummers. Zijn Babysitter-Boogie uit 1961 was zijn enige Duitse #1-hit en in Nederland was dit zijn enige hit. Hier kwam het tot #4 in april 1961. Het nummer was een cover van de Amerikaan Buzz Clifford, die het opnam onder de titel Baby sittin' boogie. Bendix nam het nummer samen op met Die Kleine Elisabeth, de dochter van zijn producer Hans Bertram. De bijdrage van Elisabeth bestond louter uit wat gebrabbel, gelach en gehuil.
In 1965 ontdekte hij Heino, die later één van de populairste schlagerzangers in Duitsland zou worden. 20 jaar lang was Ralf ook zijn producer. Tegenwoordig heeft hij zich teruggetrokken uit de muziekwereld en heeft hij een huis in Monaco en Florida.

Percy Sledge (Leighton (Alabama), 25 november 1940) is een Amerikaans soulzanger, best bekend van de nummers "When a Man Loves a Woman" en "My Special Prayer". Hij is voornamelijk bekend van emotionele soulballads, maar hij was ook een van de eerste artiesten die country met soul mengde, waarbij hij covers van onder andere Kris Kristofferson zong.
Begin jaren zestig werkte Sledge nog als verpleger in een ziekenhuis, toen hij zijn eerste treden in de muziek maakte als lid van de soulgroep de Esquires Combo. Lokale dj Quin Ivy adviseerde hem in 1966 om solo te gaan. "When a Man Loves a Woman", door Sledge zelf geschreven, was de eerste single die van hem werd uitgebracht in de zomer van 1966, bij Atlantic Records. Al snel werd het wereldwijd een grote hit, waaronder nummer één in de Verenigde Staten. De single werd opgevolgd door de hits "Love me Tender", "Take Time to Know her" en in 1969 "My Special Prayer".
In de jaren zeventig daalde zijn populariteit. "I'll be your everything" uit 1975 was zijn laatste grote internationale hit. Zijn optredens verkochten daarentegen een stuk beter en tot in de jaren negentig bleef hij uitverkochte zalen trekken. In 1987 werd "When a Man Loves a Woman" weer een hit, dankzij een reclame van het jeansmerk Levi's.

The Marcels were a doo-wop group known for turning American classical pop songs into rock and roll. The group formed in 1959 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with lead Cornelius Harp, bass Fred Johnson, Gene Bricker, Ron Mundy, and Richard Knauss. The group was named by Fred Johnson's younger sister Priscilla, after a popular hair style of the day (the Marcell wave). In 1961 many were shocked to hear a new version of the ballad, "Blue Moon" that began with the bass singer saying, "bomp-baba-bomp" and "dip-da-dip." The record sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[1] It is featured in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.[citation needed]
The disc went to number one in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart. In the U.S., additional revivals in the same vein as "Blue Moon" - "Heartaches" and "Melancholy Baby" - were less successful, although "Heartaches" peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually sold over one million copies worldwide.
In August 1961, due to problems encountered in the Deep South while touring because of the group being bi-racial, the white members, Knauss and Bricker left and were replaced by Allen Johnson (brother of Fred) and Walt Maddox. Mundy left soon after, leaving the group a quartet.
In 1962, Harp and Allen Johnson left, and were replaced by Richard Harris and William Herndon. There was a brief reunion of the original members in 1973. The group made several recordings in 1975 with Harp back on lead.
Original member Gene Bricker died in 1983. Allen Johnson died in 1995.
By the early 1990s the group included Johnson, Maddox, Harris, Jules Hopson, and Richard Merritt.
The group split around 1995. Fred Johnson formed his own group with new members, while the other four members recruited new bassist Ted Smith. Maddox won a lawsuit against Sunny James Svetnic, the manager of Johnson's group, for trademark infringement in 1996.[citation needed] Johnson reunited with Harp, Mundy, and Knauss in 1999 for the PBS special Doo Wop 50.
The Marcels were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.

The Scorpions was een beat-groep, oorspronkelijk uit Manchester in Engeland, maar vooral populair geworden in Nederland. Ze dienen niet te worden verward met de hard-rock band de Scorpions uit Duitsland.
De band ontstond in het begin van 1964 en bestond toen uit zanger Peter Lewis, sologitarist Tony Postill, diens broer Rodney op slaggitaar, bassist Tony Briley en drummer Mike Delaney. Hoewel de groep plaatselijk enige bekendheid kreeg en zelfs in de beroemde Cavern Club in Liverpool optrad, zat er in eigen land geen platencontract in. Net als veel andere Britse bands, probeerden de Scorpions hun geluk over de grens. Niet in Duitsland, maar in Nederland, waar op dat moment de concurrentie niet groot was.
Naar Nederland In Nederland had de groep meer succes. Als manager zorgde Jan Vis voor een serie optredens en via Addy Kleyngeld kreeg de band een platencontract bi CNR. De eerste single, Chuck Berrys Bye Bye Johnny met Rip It Up aan de achterzijde, kwam in augustus 1964 uit, maar had geen succes. CNR zag brood in de Scorpions en in de loop van het jaar kwamen nog drie andere singles uit. De derde daarvan, Hello Josephine, een cover van Fats Domino's My girl Josephine Briley was intussen vertrokken, waarna Terry Morton als sologitarist toetrad. Rodney Postill schakelde over naar de bas en Tony Postill naar de ritmegitaar. Hello Josephine werd een enorme hit in Nederland en bereikte de tweede plaats in de top 40 van Radio Veronica. Drummer Mike Delaney maakte het succes niet mee. Hij verliet de groep en werd vervangen door Ian Lucas. De goede verkopen van Hello Josephine rechtvaardigden het uitbrengen van een LP, die de titel Scorpions kreeg en in het najaar van 1965 in de winkels lag.

Freddy Quinn (Hardegg, 27 september 1931) is een Oostenrijkse schlagerzanger en acteur. Hij was vooral bekend in de jaren '50 en '60.
In 1956 was hij de eerste vertegenwoordiger van West-Duitsland op het Eurovisiesongfestival met So geht das jede Nacht.
Met liedjes als Heimweh, Junge komm bald wieder, Die Gitarre und das Meer, Unter fremden Sternen, La Paloma, Der Legionär und Heimatlos had Quinn tussen 1956 en 1966 tien nummer-1-hits en was hij Duitslands absolute nummer 1 (in totaal heeft hij 23 liedjes in de top-10 gehad).
Zijn melancholische liedjes over komen en gaan, afscheid nemen, drang naar verre landen vonden een groot publiek in het naoorlogse Duitsland.
Quinn woonde ook een tijdje in de Verenigde Staten en speelde in musicals mee.
Met de komst van de Beatles en Rolling Stones die de Duitse markt veroverden taande het succes van Quinn, hij had nog een nummer 1 hit, maar de teksten waren erg kritisch. Hoewel hij geen grote hits meer scoorde bleef hij optreden en vaak op televisie komen.
In 1997 werd hem de Paul-Lincke-Ring voor zijn buitengewone verdiensten voor de Duitstalige amusementsmuziek toegekend.
In 2004 kwam Quinn in de kranten door belastingontduiken (900.000). Hij gaf Zwitserland als zijn hoofdwoonplaats op maar woont toch overwegend in Hamburg waardoor hij in Duitsland belastingplichtig is. Het gerecht oordeelde dat hij zijn schulden moest vereffenen, hij kreeg er nog een voorwaardelijke straf van 2 jaar bovenop en een boete van 150.000.
In januari 2008 overlijdt zijn vrouw Lily Blessmann (89 jaar) en hij heeft zoveel verdriet dat hij er zelf ook geen zin meer aan heeft, zo meldt hij de pers.

Aretha Louise Franklin (Memphis (Tennessee), 25 maart 1942) is een Amerikaanse gospel-, soul- en R&B-zangeres.
Als kind zong Aretha Franklin met haar zusters, Carolyn and Erma, in de baptistenkerk waar haar vader dominee was. Haar eerste plaatopnames maakte ze toen ze 14 jaar oud was. Ze werd door John Hammond ontdekt en sloot een contract met Columbia Records. Begin jaren zestig maakte ze een paar liedjes die populair werden, onder andere Rock-a-bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody.
Na haar vertrek bij Columbia Records sloot ze een contract met Atlantic Records. Haar producer werd Jerry Wexler, met wie ze een paar zeer invloedrijke R&B-opnames maakte, zoals I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You). De stijl van dit lied had veel meer "soul" dan haar eerdere werk. Tegen het eind van de jaren 60 kreeg Aretha Franklin de bijname "The Queen of Soul", omdat ze zo beroemd was geworden en tevens als een rolmodel voor de Afro-Amerikaanse gemeenschap werd gezien.
Aretha Franklin had veel top 10-hits, waaronder covers van andere beroemdheden, zoals The Beatles (Eleanor Rigby), The Band (The Weight), Simon and Garfunkel (Bridge Over Troubled Water), Sam Cooke en The Drifters.
Andere belangrijke hits waren Chain of Fools, Natural Woman, Think, Baby I Love You, The House That Jack Built, I Say a Little Prayer en Respect. Spanish Harlem stond in de Daverende Dertig één week op de eerste plaats.
Begin jaren tachtig lijkt het voorbij met haar carrière, totdat ze een cover maakt van de Doobie Brothers-hit What A Fool Believes. Vlak daarna is ze te bewonderen in de klassieke John Belushi-muziekfilm The Blues Brothers. Het duurt daarna nog zeven jaar voordat ze de hitlijsten weer haalt, maar dat doet ze dan ook met de gigantische hit I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me), een duet met George Michael dat een paar weken op nummer 1 in de Top 40 en de Nationale Hitparade stond. Het nummer werd geschreven door Simon Climie van Climie/Fisher. In 1994 zong ze nog A Deeper Love voor de bioscoopkraker Sister Act.
Op 3 januari 1987 werd zij de eerste vrouw die een plaats kreeg in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1999 ontving ze de hoogste Amerikaanse kunstonderscheiding, de National Medal of Arts
Op 20 januari 2009 zong Franklin My Country, 'Tis of Thee tijdens de inauguratie van Barack Obama als 44ste President van de Verenigde Staten.

John Joseph Johnny Burnette (Memphis, 25 maart 1934 - 14 augustus 1964) was een Amerikaanse Rockabilly-artiest.
Burnette was het tweede kind van Willie May en Dorsey Burnette Sr.. Zijn oudere broer heet Dorsey Burnette.
Johnny was een sportieve jongeman. Zo deed hij aan boksen, basketbal en voetbal. Bij het boksen behaalt hij de titel Golden Gloves Divisional Championship in de categorie lichtgewichten
Muziekcarrière Op zijn vijfde leerde Burnette gitaar spelen, en ging samen met zijn broer Dorsey zingen en gitaar spelen voor de poorten van de Humes Highschool. Al snel kregen ze gezelschap van onder andere Bill Black, Scotty Moore, en zelfs Elvis Presley. Toen Johnny wat ouder werd, stichtte hij zijn eigen highschoolband en speelde hij op diverse benefieten. Tevens maakte hij zijn eerste grote publieke opwachting op de militaire basis van Millington.
The Rock and Roll trio Samen met zijn broer Dorsey Burnette en zijn collega Paul Burlison vormde Burnette vanaf 1951 The Rythm Rangers. Ze werden bekend als The Dalton Gang, omdat hun optredens dikwijls op een gevecht eindigde.
Johnny en Dorsey waren ook de uitvinders van de term Rockabilly. Ze maakten namelijk een lied: Rock Billy Boogie geïnspireerd op hun twee peuters Rocky en Billy. Algauw werd hierdoor het muziekgenre rockybilly uitgevonden, wat later veranderde in rockabilly vanwege het beter klinken. Ondanks dat de broeders Burnette ondertussen al een eigen film en tv-show hadden, wilden ze nog meer. In 1956 verhuisden ze daarom naar New York City. Daar deden ze mee aan een talentenjacht: Ted Mack & The Original Amateur Hour. Ze wonnen een platencontract en veranderen hun naam in: The Rock and Roll Trio. Hun hits vielen in de smaak en werden dan ook vaak gecoverd.
Op de avond van 14 augustus 1964 kwam Johnny Burnette om het leven bij een bootongeluk. Hij voer met zijn vissersbootje op Clear Lake in Californië, en kwam in botsing met een cruiseschip. Johnny werd overboord geslingerd en verdronk.

Jack Leroy (Jackie) Wilson, Jr. (Detroit (Michigan), 19 juni 1934 Cherry Hill Township (New Jersey), 21 januari 1984) was een Amerikaans soul- en rhythm-and-blues-zanger.
Wilson groeide op in Detroit. In 1953 sloot hij zich aan bij de groep Billy Ward & the Dominoes. In die tijd kreeg hij veel fans, onder wie Elvis Presley.
In 1956 begon Wilsons solocarrière met het nummer Reet Petite. Latere nummers van hem waren Lonely Teardrops en I'll Be Satisfied. In 1961 werd Wilson neergeschoten door een vrouwelijke fan. Hij overleefde deze aanslag en ging verder met zijn carrière.
Deze carrière kwam halverwege de jaren '60 in een dip. Hij kwam nog kort terug en vanaf de jaren '70 had hij nauwelijks hits. In 1975 kreeg Wilson een hartaanval op het podium tijdens het zingen van Lonely Teardrops. Wilson raakte in coma en ontwaakte hier niet meer uit. Na ruim 8 jaar in coma in een ziekenhuis te hebben gelegen, overleed hij in 1984.
Begin 1987 scoorde hij postuum een nummer 1-hit in onder meer Groot-Brittannië en Nederland met het opnieuw uitgebrachte Reet Petite.

Johnny Tillotson (born April 20, 1939, Jacksonville, Florida) is an American singer and songwriter. He enjoyed his greatest success in the early 1960s, when he scored several Top Ten hits including "Poetry In Motion" and the self-penned "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'." He also sang "Yellow Bird" an adaptation of the Haitian song Choucoune.
He was the son of Doris and Jack Tillotson, a country music disc jockey, and was raised from the age of 9 in Palatka, Florida. He began to perform at local functions and on his father's radio station as a child, and while attending Palatka Senior High School developed a local reputation as a talented singer. He became a regular on the Toby Dowdy regional TV show in Jacksonville, and then had his own TV show on WDGA-TV. In 1957, while studying at the University of Florida, he entered a national talent contest and won through to the final round in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was heard by Archie Bleyer, owner of the independent Cadence Records. Bleyer signed Tillotson to a three-year contract, and issued his first single, "Dreamy Eyes" / "Well I'm Your Man" in September 1958. Both songs had been written by Tillotson, and both made the Billboard Hot 100, "Dreamy Eyes" peaking at # 63. After graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and Communications, Tillotson moved to New York City to pursue his music career.
From late 1959, a succession of singles - "True True Happiness," "Why Do I Love You So," and a double-sided single covering the R&B hits "Earth Angel" and "Pledging My Love" - all reached the bottom half of the Hot 100. His biggest success came with his sixth single, the up-tempo "Poetry in Motion", written by Paul Kaufman and Mike Anthony, and recorded in Nashville with session musicians including saxophonist Boots Randolph and pianist Floyd Cramer. Released in September 1960, it went to # 2 on the Hot 100 in the US, and # 1 on the UK Singles Chart in January 1961. On Bleyer's advice, Tillotson focused primarily on his recording career, but also appeared on television and began to be featured as a teen idol in magazines. His follow-up record, "Jimmy's Girl," only reached # 25 in the US charts and # 43 in the UK; after that, "Without You" returned him to the US Top Ten but failed to make the UK charts. He also toured widely as part of Dick Clark's Cavalcade Of Stars.
Early in 1962, Tillotson recorded a song he had written himself, "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'," inspired by the terminal illness of his father. It became one of his biggest hits, reaching # 3 in the US pop chart and becoming the first of his records to make the country music charts, where it peaked at # 4. It earned him his first Grammy nomination, for Best Country & Western Recording, and was later recorded by over 100 performers including Elvis Presley and Billy Joe Royal, whose version was a country hit in 1988. Tillotson then recorded an album, It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin', on which he covered several country standards including Hank Locklin's "Send Me the Pillow You Dream On" and Hank Williams' "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You)," which also became hit singles. He continued to record both country-flavored and pop songs in 1963, and "You Can Never Stop Me Loving You" and its follow-up, the Willie Nelson song "Funny How Time Slips Away," both made the Hot 100. He also appeared in the 1963 movie Just for Fun

Robert Thomas Velline (Fargo (North Dakota), 30 april 1943), bekend als Bobby Vee, is een Amerikaans zanger en acteur.
Bobby Vee's muziekcarrière begon op The Day the Music Died. Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens en The Big Bopper waren bezig met de Winter Dance Party-tour en kwamen om tijdens een vliegtuigongeluk op 3 februari, 1959. Hun volgende concert zou plaatsvinden in Moorhead, Minnesota. De toen 15-jarige Bobby Vee had een bandje, genaamd The Shadows, en boden zich aan als vervangers voor het geplande concert. Het optreden werd een groot succes en Vee werd gevraagd voor meerdere optredens waardoor Vee uiteindelijk bekend werd. Tot op heden treedt Bobby Vee op tijdens het Winter Dance Party-herdenkingsconcert.
Vee's eerste single was "Suzie Baby", uitgegeven in 1959. In de eerste helft van de jaren zestig scoorde Vee vele hits waaronder: "Take Good Care of My Baby" (wat een nummer 1-hit in de Billboard Hot 100 in 1961 werd en de 3e plaats behaalde in de UK Singles Chart), "Devil or Angel" (VS #6), "Rubber Ball" (VS #6), wat hem een internationale ster maakte, "Run To Him" (VS #2), "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" (VS #3) en vele anderen. Na 1964 werd het een wat mindere periode voor Vee vanwege de Britse revolutie in de popmuziek. In 1967 kwamen Bobby Vee en zijn begeleidingsband The Strangers terug met de hit "Come Back When You Grow Up". Aan het eind van de jaren zestig scoorde Vee geen hits meer uit en daalde zijn populariteit.
In de jaren zeventig bracht Vee een aantal albums en singles uit, zonder enig succes. In de jaren tachtig toerde Vee door de Verenigde Staten, Europa en het Verre Oosten. In 1988 trok hij rond door de VS, met de heropgerichte Crickets. In 1999 ontving hij de Rough Rider Award. Vee treedt nog steeds op, met zijn zoons: Robby (gitaar), Tommy (basgitaar) en Jeff (drums).

The group formed in 1946 at Armstrong High School in Washington, D.C., with members Harold Lucas, Billy Shelton, and Thomas Woods. John "Buddy" Bailey was added soon after, and they began calling themselves the "Four Clovers", with Bailey on lead. In perfecting their sound, the group pushed Shelton and Woods out in 1948, and brought in Matthew McQuarter and Harold Winley. Their break came in 1950, when they were introduced to Lou Krefetz, who became their manager. They signed to New York's Rainbow Records and released one single, "Yes Sir, That's My Baby" backed with "When You Come Back To Me". Soon after, Krefetz brought them to Atlantic Records' Ahmet Ertegün, and they were signed to Atlantic in 1951. At this point, Bill Harris was added as their guitarist. Their first appearance came in February of that year at the Apollo Theater.
Their very first Atlantic session produced their first big hit, "Don't You Know I Love You", which hit #1 on the national charts in June of 1951. "One Mint Julep" (written by Rudy Toombs) and "Fool, Fool, Fool" also went #1 in September. Bailey was drafted in 1952, and John Phillip was brought in to replace him. He stayed for just a few months, before leaving and being replaced by Charlie White, who had been in the Dominoes and the Checkers.
With personal problems, White was fired near the end of 1953. His replacement was Billy Mitchell. The group continued recording with Atlantic, without as much success as they'd previously seen. Buddy Bailey was discharged from the Army in May 1954, and rejoined the group, making them a quintet. They continued in recording, and in 1955, found moderate success with "Devil or Angel".
Mitchell left in 1957 to do solo work, but rejoined shortly thereafter, opting to do both solo work and work with the Clovers. Their Atlantic contract expired, and Krefetz moved them to his own label, Poplar Records. Poplar was purchased by United Artists Records shortly thereafter. The group's work with United Artists put them in contact with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. After a few recordings there, they had their biggest hit, "Love Potion #9", which came in July of 1959, and featured Mitchell on lead.
They recorded two versions of Love Potion #9 on UA. For the album of that name a new final verse was created referring to "love potion #10". In fact this version became played more often on radio than the single at the time.

Jay and the Americans was een popgroep die vooral in de jaren 60 van de 20e eeuw populair was.
Aan het eind van de jaren 50 van de vorige eeuw deden enkele studenten van de New York University een auditie bij Leiber and Stoller. Zij gaven de groep de naam Binkey Jones and the Americans. De zanger was destijds Jay Traynor. Na de eerste hit "She Cried" (1962) verliet hij de groep om plaats te maken voor David Blatt. Deze nam de naam Jay over, zodat de groep verder kon gaan onder de nieuwe naam "Jay and the Americans". Jay Black kwam over van "The Empires", waarvan hij Marty Sanders (Kupersmith) mee bracht. In 1963 kwamen zij weer in de hitlijsten met "Only In America", dat eigenlijk geschreven was voor "The Drifters".
Verdere hits waren "Come a Little Bit Closer" in 1964 (3e) en "Cara Mia" in 1965 (4e). In 1968 bereikten zij met "This magic moment" de 9e plaats. Eerder scoorden zij hits met Roy Orbisons "Crying", "Hushaby" en Neil Diamond 's eerste grote hit als songwriter "Sunday and me" en nog anderen. In 1969 hadden zij hun laatste hit: "Walkin'in the rain". Hierna ging de groep uit elkaar.
De groep bestond uit: zanger Jay Black (Jay Blatt), gitarist Marty Sanders (Marty Kupersmith), Sandy Deane (Sandy Yaguda), Kenny Vance (Kenny Rosenberg), Howie Kane (Howie Kirshenbaum). Zijdelings moet worden opgemerkt dat er 2 onbekenden een kans kregen in hun backup band. dit waren Walter Becker and Donald Fagen (Steely Dan)
In 1980 ging Frits Spits het nummer "Cara Mia" regelmaten draaien in zijn 'Avondspits'. Het nummer kwam hierdoor opnieuw in de belangstelling te staan en werd opnieuw uitgebracht. Het nummer kwam opnieuw in de Top 40, bereikte de eerste plek en was een van de zomerhits van dat jaar in Nederland en België.
In de jaren 90 van de vorige eeuw trad de band nog een paar keer op. Jay is doorgegaan als Jay Black and the Americans. In 2006 moest Jay Black door gokschulden de naam Jay and the Americans verkopen. Marty Sanders kocht de naam en de groep ging de derde fase in met een 3e Jay (Jay Reicke). De groep bestaat nu uit Jay Reincke, Howie Kane, Sandy Deanne en Marty Sanders. De inmiddels bijna 70-jarige Jay Black zingt nog steeds onder zijn eigen artiestennaam en heeft na de dood van Frank Sinatra de bijnaam "the voice" gekregen.

The Beach Boys is een Amerikaanse band die in 1961 werd opgericht door de broers Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson en Carl Wilson, hun neef Mike Love en schoolvriend Al Jardine.
Met harde hand aangespoord door vader en manager Murry Wilson, zelf een weinig succesvolle liedjesschrijver, maakten de jongens muziek in de stijl van The Four Freshmen, waarbij harmonieuze zang de hoofdrol speelde. De single Surfin' uit 1961 werd een hit en was typerend voor de richting die de band de eerstvolgende jaren zou volgen: een combinatie van surfmuziek, een stijl die tot dan toe vooral instrumentaal was geweest, en teksten over surfen, auto's en meisjes. In hoog tempo werden singles en albums uitgebracht. Al Jardine zegt hierover: "The Beach Boys zelf waren onze grootste concurrenten".
Leider van de band was Brian Wilson, die ook de meeste liedjes schreef en die vooral vanaf de derde lp ook een begenadigd producer bleek te zijn. Eind 1964 besloot de verlegen Brian om niet langer live op te treden en zich meer op het schrijven van nummers en het produceren te richten. Zijn vervanger in de liveband was Bruce Johnston. Murry Wilson werd ontslagen, waarmee de artistieke vrijheid voor Brian compleet werd. Naarmate hij de mogelijkheden van de studio meer ontdekte schreef hij complexere muziek, die hij liet spelen door de beste studiomuzikanten. De andere leden van de groep voegden later de vocalen toe.
Pet Sounds Toen in 1965 The Beatles het album Rubber Soul uitbrachten was dit voor Brian de inspiratie voor Pet Sounds, dat in 1966 verscheen en onlangs door het tijdschrift "Rolling Stone Magazine" werd uitgeroepen tot op-twee-na-beste album ooit. Dit album, dat voor die tijd voor popmuziek ongekend complexe muziek en persoonlijke teksten bevatte, werd ontvangen met lovende recensies maar verkocht in Amerika slechter dan de vorige albums. In Europa nam de populariteit van The Beach Boys er echter flink door toe, en voor het eerst hadden The Beatles serieuze concurrentie in de hitparades. De latere single Good Vibrations, waarvan de opnames zes maanden duurden in zes verschillende studio's, werd een grote hit.
De laatste grote Beach Boys hit in Nederland was Kokomo (1989) uit de film Cocktail met Tom Cruise. Het allerlaatste Beach Boys-album zou Stars and Stripes, Vol. 1 uit 1996 worden, waarop oude successen werden gezongen door beroemde countryzangers en de Beach Boys alleen de achtergrondvocalen verzorgden. Carl Wilsons overlijden aan kanker in 1998 betekende het definitieve einde voor de groep. Mike Love (met de in 1979 teruggekeerde Bruce Johnston) en Al Jardine toeren tegenwoordig elk met een eigen band waarmee ze vooral oude successen ten gehore blijven brengen. Brian Wilson werkt sinds 1988 solo. Gesteund door zijn begeleidingsband, met daarin onder andere de leden van de Wondermints, werd Smile alsnog afgemaakt. Eddie Cochran (Albert Lea, Minnesota, 3 oktober 1938 - Wiltshire, Engeland, 17 april 1960) was een Amerikaans rockabillyzanger en -gitarist. Veel van zijn nummers gaan over de vreugdes van het leven als tiener. Hij wordt hierdoor wel eens vergeleken met Buddy Holly. Enkele van zijn bekendste nummers zijn "C'mon Everybody", "Summertime Blues" en "Three Steps to Heaven".
In 1955 nam Eddie Cochran zijn eerste platen op als lid van The Cochran Brothers, een duo dat hij samen met Hank Cochran vormde. De twee zijn echter geen familie van elkaar. Hank Cochran zou zich later ontwikkelen tot een bekende schrijver van countryliedjes. Ook ontwikkelde Eddie Cochran rond deze tijd tot een sessiemuzikant en schreef hij een demo met Jerry Capehart, die later zijn manager zou worden.
In 1956 vroeg Boris Petroff of hij wilde optreden in een film genaamd The Girl Can't Help It. Eddie Cochran deed het en trad in de film op met het nummer "Twenty-Flight Rock". Tijdens de lente van 1960 tourde hij samen met zijn vriend Gene Vincent door Groot-Brittannië, met veel succes.Op 17 april van dat jaar raakten hij, Gene Vincent en zijn vriendin, de liedschrijfster Sharon Sheeley, betrokken in een auto-ongeluk nabij Chippenham toen ze onderweg waren naar het vliegveld van Londen. Vincent en Sheeley overleefden het, maar Eddie Cochran stierf diezelfde dag. Hij was slechts 21 jaar oud. Eddie Cochran was zeer productief, en na zijn overlijden zijn veel platen met nieuw materiaal uitgebracht, die vooral in het Verenigd Koninkrijk goed verkochten. De single "Three Steps to Heaven" werd in dat land ook postuum, een maand na zijn overlijden, een nummer 1-hit.

Johnny and the Hurricanes was a rock and roll band that began as The Orbits in Toledo, Ohio in 1957. Led by saxophonist Johnny Paris (born John Pocisk, 1940, Walbridge, Ohio - died 1 May 2006, Ann Arbor, Michigan), they were school friends who played on a few recordings behind Mack Vickery, a local rockabilly singer.
They signed with Harry Balk and Irving Micahnik of Twirl Records, which led to national engagements in 1959. Johnny and the Hurricanes recorded "Crossfire" in a vacant cinema to provide echo. That became a nationwide U.S. hit, and ranked No. 23 in the U.S. chart in the summer of 1959.
Johnny and the Hurricanes followed with an instrumental version of "Red River Valley" on Warwick Records, that became a Top Ten hit on both sides of the Atlantic (No. 5 in the U.S., No. 3 in the UK), and sold over a million copies. The musicians in the band then were Paris on saxophone, Paul Tesluk on hammond organ, Dave Yorko on guitar, Butch Mattice on bass, and Bill "Little Bo" Savich on drums.
Many recordings were cover versions of old tunes with a rock and roll beat. They chose these songs because they were well recognized and easier to accept with the rock and roll beat. Tunes were credited to 'King, Mack' and sometimes one other name, King and Mack were in fact pseudonyms for Harry Balk and Irving Micahnik, the band's managers. In 1960, they recorded the United States Army bugle call, "Reveille", as "Reveille Rock", and turned "Blue Tail Fly" into "Beatnik Fly". Both tunes made the Top 40 achieving number 15 and 25 respectively. The band also recorded "Down Yonder" for Big Top Records. Still in 1960, they recorded "When The Saints Go Marching In" as "Revival", but it ranked in the charts for just one week, and peaked at No. 97. The track fared better in the UK as the B-side of "Rocking Goose", which reached No. 3 in the UK Singles Chart.
The band developed a following in Europe. In 1962, they played at the Star-Club in Hamburg, where The Beatles, then a little-known band, served as an opening act. Johnny and the Hurricanes cut records until 1965. Johnny continued to tour with the Hurricanes in Europe and United States until his death. Johnny had an uncle (Realtor) in Rossford, Ohio (Johnny's home town) who owned a building on the main street and offered Johnny's wife (Sharon Venier-Pocisk) space for an antique shop. When not on the road he helped out with the antique shop and vending machine business as payment for the store front for his wife.
Johnny Paris and his band toured Europe occasionally until 2006, shortly before Paris died. Paris claimed that over 300 musicians played in the band in its fifty years existence.
The band inspired the song "Johnny and the Hurricanes" on the album How I Learned to Love the Bootboys, by the band The Auteurs. They were namechecked as well in the Kinks' 1973 song "One of the Survivors."

Mary Hopkin (Pontardawe (Wales), 3 mei 1950) is een Britse zangeres. Haar single Those Were the Days, geproduceerd door Paul McCartney, kwam in Groot-Brittannië uit in augustus 1968 op het Apple-label en bereikte daar een eerste plaats (en een tweede plaats in de Verenigde Staten).
Tevens vertolkte zij een compositie van McCartney (officieel een Lennon/McCartney track) met de titel Goodbye, welke McCartney eveneens produceerde.
Hopkin vertegenwoordigde Groot-Brittannië in 1970 tijdens het vijfde Eurovisiesongfestival en bereikte met het liedje Knock Knock Who's There een tweede plaats. Mary bracht een drietal lp's uit op het Apple-label: Postcard, Earth Song Ocean Song en Those were the Days.
In 1971 trouwde Hopkin met platenproducent Tony Visconti. Zij zong daarna veel minder om voldoende tijd te hebben voor haar gezin. In 1981 zijn Hopkin en Visconti gescheiden.

Brian Hyland is nog geen 16 jaar oud wanneer hij in '60 een nummer één-hit heeft met het door Paul Vance en Lee Pockriss geschreven novelty-nummer 'Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini'. Het begin van een gloedvolle carrière, tijdens welke Hyland menig tienerdrama zal bezingen; men denke slechts aan 'Ginny Come Lately' en 'Sealed With A Kiss' (in '75 nog hoog in de Engelse hitparade). Allmusic journalist Jason Ankeny states, "Hyland's puppy-love pop virtually defined the sound and sensibility of bubblegum during the pre-Beatles era." Although his status as a teen idol faded, he went on to release several country-influenced albums and had further chart hits later in his career.

Johnny Preston (Port Arthur (Texas), 18 augustus 1939) is een Amerikaanse rock-'n-rollzanger. Hij is vooral bekend van zijn hit Running Bear..
Johnny Preston werd op 18 augustus 1939 in Texas geboren als John Preston Courville. Hij heeft Cajun en Duitse voorouders. Preston ging naar school in Beaumont, Texas en vormde daar zijn eerste bandje: The Shades. Toen ze op een avond in 1958 in een club in Beaumont speelden, werd Preston ontdekt door J.P. Richardson, beter bekend als The Big Bopper. Richardson was onder de indruk van Prestons zangtalent en bood hem aan een nummer op te nemen. Preston was echter zo zenuwachtig tijdens deze opname dat er nooit een single uitgegeven werd. Richardson bood Preston echter een tweede kans en vroeg hem het door hem geschreven nummer Running Bear in te zingen. Richardson werd bij het schrijven van het nummer over de Indianen Running Bear en zijn geliefde Little White Dove geïnspireerd door een reclame van Dove zeep. Hoewel Preston niet onder de indruk was van het nummer, nemen ze het toch op. De Indianengezangen in het nummer worden gezongen door Richardson, countryzanger George Jones en producer Bill Hall.
Vlak voordat Mercury Records het nummer wilde uitbrengen, kwam J.P. Richardson om het leven bij een vliegtuigongeluk. Bij dit ongeluk op 3 februari 1959 kwamen ook Buddy Holly en Ritchie Valens om het leven. Vanwege dit voorwel werd de release van de single uitgesteld tot augustus 1959. Het nummer werd langzaam bekend en werd uiteindelijk een nummer 1-hit in Amerika en het Verenigd Koninkrijk. In Nederland en Vlaanderen bereikte het nummer de tiende plaats. Ook de opvolgers Cradle of love en Feel so fine, een cover van Shirley & Lees Feel so good werden hits. Ook in het Verenigd Koninkrijk waren deze nummers populair, waardoor Preston vaak naar Engeland afreisde om daar onder andere met Conway Twitty en Freddy Cannon op te treden.
In 1961 was het succes van Johnny Preston vrijwel overal over. In zijn thuisland had hij nog twee kleine hitjes met Leave my kitten alone, een Little Willie John-cover, en Free me. Daarna is hij in de vergetelheid geraakt. Preston treedt echter nog steeds op in Amerika en Engeland met zijn oude reperoire en woont nog steeds in Texas. Voor zijn pionierswerk voor de rockabilly is Johnny Preston opgenomen in de Rockabilly Hall of Fame.

The Spotnicks is an instrumental rock group from Sweden, who were formed in 1961. They were famous for wearing "space suit" costumes on stage, and for their innovative electronic guitar sound. They have since released 42 albums, selling more than 18 million records, and still tour.
The Spotnicks originated from Bo Starander and Björn Thelin's duo "The Rebels" (1956),who later became "Rock-Teddy and The Blue Caps", a group formed in 1957 in Gothenburg now with guitarist Bo Winberg (born 27 March 1939) in the band as well as Bo Starander (born 11 March 1942) (rhythm guitar), and Björn Thelin (born 27 June 1942) (bass guitar). In 1958 they added Ove Johansson (drums), changed their name to "The Frazers", and began playing regularly in local clubs. They signed a recording contract in 1961, and changed their name to "The Spotnicks", a play on the Russian satellite Sputnik as suggested by their manager, Roland Ferneborg. Starander was later known as Bob Lander.
They soon became the first Swedish group to have significant international success, in a similar style to The Shadows and The Ventures. They toured Europe, and one of their early records, "Orange Blossom Special", became their first big international hit, making the Top 30 in the UK Singles Chart in 1962 on the Oriole label, and reaching #1 in Australia. Around this time they began wearing their trademark "space suits" on stage. They recorded their first album, The Spotnicks in London - Out-a-Space, in 1962. Further hits included "Rocket Man" (no relation to the Elton John song), and "Hava Nagila" (their biggest UK hit, where it made #13). Winberg also recorded solo, credited as 'The Shy Ones'.
In 1963, "Amapola" became one of their most successful singles in their home country, staying at #1 in Sweden for eight weeks. They appeared in the film Just For Fun, continued to tour widely, and recorded their second album, The Spotnicks in Paris. That year, drummer Ove Johansson left and was replaced by an Englishman, Derek Skinner. Two years later, Skinner was replaced briefly by Jimmie Nicol, who had previously toured with The Beatles, while Ringo Starr recovered from having his tonsils removed.
In 1964 and 1965, The Spotnicks expanded their popularity in Germany and Japan, reaching #1 in Japan in 1966 with "Karelia". Elsewhere, however, they became less successful as popular music tastes changed. The group, having undergone many personnel changes, split up in 1970 after releasing their fifteenth album, The Spotnicks Back in The Race. Yet the band was still popular in Japan, and it soon reformed under Winberg's control in 1971 at the request of a Japanese record label.
Winberg has continued to lead versions of The Spotnicks, occasionally including Lander and/or Thelin, on tour and in recordings since then.
