Johnny and the Hurricanes was a rock and roll band that began as The Orbits in Toledo, Ohio in 1957. Led by saxophonist Johnny Paris (born John Pocisk, 1940, Walbridge, Ohio - died 1 May 2006, Ann Arbor, Michigan), they were school friends who played on a few recordings behind Mack Vickery, a local rockabilly singer.
They signed with Harry Balk and Irving Micahnik of Twirl Records, which led to national engagements in 1959. Johnny and the Hurricanes recorded "Crossfire" in a vacant cinema to provide echo. That became a nationwide U.S. hit, and ranked No. 23 in the U.S. chart in the summer of 1959.
Johnny and the Hurricanes followed with an instrumental version of "Red River Valley" on Warwick Records, that became a Top Ten hit on both sides of the Atlantic (No. 5 in the U.S., No. 3 in the UK), and sold over a million copies. The musicians in the band then were Paris on saxophone, Paul Tesluk on hammond organ, Dave Yorko on guitar, Butch Mattice on bass, and Bill "Little Bo" Savich on drums.
Many recordings were cover versions of old tunes with a rock and roll beat. They chose these songs because they were well recognized and easier to accept with the rock and roll beat. Tunes were credited to 'King, Mack' and sometimes one other name, King and Mack were in fact pseudonyms for Harry Balk and Irving Micahnik, the band's managers. In 1960, they recorded the United States Army bugle call, "Reveille", as "Reveille Rock", and turned "Blue Tail Fly" into "Beatnik Fly". Both tunes made the Top 40 achieving number 15 and 25 respectively. The band also recorded "Down Yonder" for Big Top Records. Still in 1960, they recorded "When The Saints Go Marching In" as "Revival", but it ranked in the charts for just one week, and peaked at No. 97. The track fared better in the UK as the B-side of "Rocking Goose", which reached No. 3 in the UK Singles Chart.
The band developed a following in Europe. In 1962, they played at the Star-Club in Hamburg, where The Beatles, then a little-known band, served as an opening act. Johnny and the Hurricanes cut records until 1965. Johnny continued to tour with the Hurricanes in Europe and United States until his death. Johnny had an uncle (Realtor) in Rossford, Ohio (Johnny's home town) who owned a building on the main street and offered Johnny's wife (Sharon Venier-Pocisk) space for an antique shop. When not on the road he helped out with the antique shop and vending machine business as payment for the store front for his wife.
Johnny Paris and his band toured Europe occasionally until 2006, shortly before Paris died. Paris claimed that over 300 musicians played in the band in its fifty years existence.
The band inspired the song "Johnny and the Hurricanes" on the album How I Learned to Love the Bootboys, by the band The Auteurs. They were namechecked as well in the Kinks' 1973 song "One of the Survivors."

Mary Hopkin (Pontardawe (Wales), 3 mei 1950) is een Britse zangeres. Haar single Those Were the Days, geproduceerd door Paul McCartney, kwam in Groot-Brittannië uit in augustus 1968 op het Apple-label en bereikte daar een eerste plaats (en een tweede plaats in de Verenigde Staten).
Tevens vertolkte zij een compositie van McCartney (officieel een Lennon/McCartney track) met de titel Goodbye, welke McCartney eveneens produceerde.
Hopkin vertegenwoordigde Groot-Brittannië in 1970 tijdens het vijfde Eurovisiesongfestival en bereikte met het liedje Knock Knock Who's There een tweede plaats. Mary bracht een drietal lp's uit op het Apple-label: Postcard, Earth Song Ocean Song en Those were the Days.
In 1971 trouwde Hopkin met platenproducent Tony Visconti. Zij zong daarna veel minder om voldoende tijd te hebben voor haar gezin. In 1981 zijn Hopkin en Visconti gescheiden.

Brian Hyland is nog geen 16 jaar oud wanneer hij in '60 een nummer één-hit heeft met het door Paul Vance en Lee Pockriss geschreven novelty-nummer 'Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini'. Het begin van een gloedvolle carrière, tijdens welke Hyland menig tienerdrama zal bezingen; men denke slechts aan 'Ginny Come Lately' en 'Sealed With A Kiss' (in '75 nog hoog in de Engelse hitparade). Opnames voor Philips en Dot doen minder van hem spreken, ook al krijgt hij in '66 nog een top twintig-hit met het door Snuff Garrett geproduceerde en door Leon Russell gearrangeerde 'The Joker Went Wild'. Zijn laatste hit is in '70 het van de Impressions bekende 'Gypsy Woman' voor Uni.

Allmusic journalist Jason Ankeny states, "Hyland's puppy-love pop virtually defined the sound and sensibility of bubblegum during the pre-Beatles era." Although his status as a teen idol faded, he went on to release several country-influenced albums and had further chart hits later in his career.

Johnny Preston (Port Arthur (Texas), 18 augustus 1939) is een Amerikaanse rock-'n-rollzanger. Hij is vooral bekend van zijn hit Running Bear..
Johnny Preston werd op 18 augustus 1939 in Texas geboren als John Preston Courville. Hij heeft Cajun en Duitse voorouders. Preston ging naar school in Beaumont, Texas en vormde daar zijn eerste bandje: The Shades. Toen ze op een avond in 1958 in een club in Beaumont speelden, werd Preston ontdekt door J.P. Richardson, beter bekend als The Big Bopper. Richardson was onder de indruk van Prestons zangtalent en bood hem aan een nummer op te nemen. Preston was echter zo zenuwachtig tijdens deze opname dat er nooit een single uitgegeven werd. Richardson bood Preston echter een tweede kans en vroeg hem het door hem geschreven nummer Running Bear in te zingen. Richardson werd bij het schrijven van het nummer over de Indianen Running Bear en zijn geliefde Little White Dove geïnspireerd door een reclame van Dove zeep. Hoewel Preston niet onder de indruk was van het nummer, nemen ze het toch op. De Indianengezangen in het nummer worden gezongen door Richardson, countryzanger George Jones en producer Bill Hall.
Vlak voordat Mercury Records het nummer wilde uitbrengen, kwam J.P. Richardson om het leven bij een vliegtuigongeluk. Bij dit ongeluk op 3 februari 1959 kwamen ook Buddy Holly en Ritchie Valens om het leven. Vanwege dit voorwel werd de release van de single uitgesteld tot augustus 1959. Het nummer werd langzaam bekend en werd uiteindelijk een nummer 1-hit in Amerika en het Verenigd Koninkrijk. In Nederland en Vlaanderen bereikte het nummer de tiende plaats. Ook de opvolgers Cradle of love en Feel so fine, een cover van Shirley & Lees Feel so good werden hits. Ook in het Verenigd Koninkrijk waren deze nummers populair, waardoor Preston vaak naar Engeland afreisde om daar onder andere met Conway Twitty en Freddy Cannon op te treden.
In 1961 was het succes van Johnny Preston vrijwel overal over. In zijn thuisland had hij nog twee kleine hitjes met Leave my kitten alone, een Little Willie John-cover, en Free me. Daarna is hij in de vergetelheid geraakt. Preston treedt echter nog steeds op in Amerika en Engeland met zijn oude reperoire en woont nog steeds in Texas. Voor zijn pionierswerk voor de rockabilly is Johnny Preston opgenomen in de Rockabilly Hall of Fame.

The Spotnicks is an instrumental rock group from Sweden, who were formed in 1961. They were famous for wearing "space suit" costumes on stage, and for their innovative electronic guitar sound. They have since released 42 albums, selling more than 18 million records, and still tour.
The Spotnicks originated from Bo Starander and Björn Thelin's duo "The Rebels" (1956),who later became "Rock-Teddy and The Blue Caps", a group formed in 1957 in Gothenburg now with guitarist Bo Winberg (born 27 March 1939) in the band as well as Bo Starander (born 11 March 1942) (rhythm guitar), and Björn Thelin (born 27 June 1942) (bass guitar). In 1958 they added Ove Johansson (drums), changed their name to "The Frazers", and began playing regularly in local clubs. They signed a recording contract in 1961, and changed their name to "The Spotnicks", a play on the Russian satellite Sputnik as suggested by their manager, Roland Ferneborg. Starander was later known as Bob Lander.
They soon became the first Swedish group to have significant international success, in a similar style to The Shadows and The Ventures. They toured Europe, and one of their early records, "Orange Blossom Special", became their first big international hit, making the Top 30 in the UK Singles Chart in 1962 on the Oriole label, and reaching #1 in Australia. Around this time they began wearing their trademark "space suits" on stage. They recorded their first album, The Spotnicks in London - Out-a-Space, in 1962. Further hits included "Rocket Man" (no relation to the Elton John song), and "Hava Nagila" (their biggest UK hit, where it made #13). Winberg also recorded solo, credited as 'The Shy Ones'.
In 1963, "Amapola" became one of their most successful singles in their home country, staying at #1 in Sweden for eight weeks. They appeared in the film Just For Fun, continued to tour widely, and recorded their second album, The Spotnicks in Paris. That year, drummer Ove Johansson left and was replaced by an Englishman, Derek Skinner. Two years later, Skinner was replaced briefly by Jimmie Nicol, who had previously toured with The Beatles, while Ringo Starr recovered from having his tonsils removed.
In 1964 and 1965, The Spotnicks expanded their popularity in Germany and Japan, reaching #1 in Japan in 1966 with "Karelia". Elsewhere, however, they became less successful as popular music tastes changed. The group, having undergone many personnel changes, split up in 1970 after releasing their fifteenth album, The Spotnicks Back in The Race. Yet the band was still popular in Japan, and it soon reformed under Winberg's control in 1971 at the request of a Japanese record label.
Winberg has continued to lead versions of The Spotnicks, occasionally including Lander and/or Thelin, on tour and in recordings since then.

Frankie Laine, pseudoniem van Francesco Paolo LoVecchio (Chicago, 30 maart 1913 - San Diego, 6 februari 2007), was één van de succesvolste en invloedrijke Amerikaanse zangers uit de twintigste eeuw. Zijn bijnamen zijn onder andere 'Mister Rhythm', 'Old Leather Lungs' en 'Old Man Jazz'. Wereldwijd verkocht hij ongeveer tweehonderdvijftig miljoen grammofoonplaten.
Laine vierde successen met nummers als Answer me, I Believe, Hey Joe, Granada, Jealousy, Mule Train, Cool Water en That Lucky Old Sun.
Hij was gezegend met een zeer krachtige stem en kon hallen vullen zonder microfoon. Hij was één van de grootste 'hitmachines' uit de jaren veertig en vijftig, met meer dan zeventig hitnoteringen, éénentwintig gouden platen en alleen al in de Verenigde Staten honderdvijftien miljoen verkochte platen en albums. Laine was van origine een door blues beïnvloede jazz-zanger, maar beheerste nagenoeg iedere muziekstijl. Hij maakte dan ook muzikale uitstapjes naar gospel, folk, country, americana en rock 'n roll. Zijn bijnaam 'Mister Rhythm' dankt hij aan zijn pompende jazzy stijl.
Laine liet zich inspireren door de zwarte muziek, en zijn zangstijl leek aanvankelijk niet aan te slaan. In plaats van zich keurig aan de 'maat' te houden, plaatste Laine juist graag de nadruk op de 'downbeat', in tegenstelling tot zijn tijdgenoten. Ook zijn voorkeur voor een melodielijn die niet exact dezelfde was als de melodie van de muzikale begeleiding zorgde ervoor dat het publiek erg aan Laine moest wennen. Echter toen het publiek hem eenmaal had omarmd, werd Laine ook een echte superster.
Hij werd wel 'de eerste blauwogige soulzanger' genoemd, waarmee bedoeld wordt dat hij als blanke muziek ging maken die oorspronkelijk door zwarten werd gemaakt. Hiermee baande hij de weg voor zangers als Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley en Tony Bennett.
In de jaren vijftig maakte Laine een soort tweede carrière door een flinke lijst titelsongs voor Hollywoodfilms in te zingen. Zijn gepassioneerd en energiek vertolkte versie van de (oorspronkelijk door Tex Ritter gezongen) titelsong van de westernfilm High Noon (uit 1952, van Fred Zinnemann, met Gary Cooper en Grace Kelly als sterren) leverde hem op slag grote internationale bekendheid en popularititeit op. In Nederland profiteerde Joop de Knegt met een cover van die grote hit flink van het succes mee. Andere films waarvoor hij zong waren Gunfight at OK Corral en Bullwhip. Zijn vertolking van de titelsong van de Mel Brooks-film Blazing Saddles leverde hem een Oscarnominatie op. Laine zong ook de begintune van de televisieserie Rawhide uit de jaren zestig in; dit werd één van de bekendste televisietunes aller tijden.

Ray Smith heeft in zijn jeugd spelenderwijs gitaar leren spelen. Is al jong begonnen met zijn "optredens"op de verjaardagen van familie, vrienden en kennissen. Dit resulteerde in het spelen in verschillende bandjes. Een van de bands waarin hij ruim 7 jaar gespeeld heeft was de Moluks/Indische formatie "Siafusu".
De muziekstijl, disco/funk, bestond uit covers van bandjes als Massada, Time Bandits, Santana en het zogenaamde Indische repertoire. Hiermee is geruime tijd in de BeNeLux opgetreden.
Jaren later is Ray als zanger/gitarist/toetsenist begonnen bij de band "Cinnamon" uit Amersfoort. Deze band, bestaande uit wat "oudere" Indische jongeren (veertigers), bracht het country en indo repertoire op vooral de Indische feesten, pasars, bruiloften en partijen. Er werd door heel Nederland met veel succes opgetreden.
De laatste band waarin hij gespeeld heeft was "Restless" eveneens uit Amersfoort afkomstig. Deze band bracht een breed repertoire voor vooral de feesten en partijen: reggae, disco, funk, country, rock & roll en indo-rock. Begin 2000 is Ray uit de band gestapt omdat het weer tijd was voor wat anders.
Hierna is hij samen met Jenny een duo begonnen en heeft zich toegelegd op de disco en dance classics. Gezien de hit-revival van muziek uit de jaren 70 en 80 bleek deze formule aan te slaan.
Begin 2001 ontstond het idee met collega artiesten om samen te gaan optreden. Dit project resulteerde in de formatie "THREE IN ONE". "Three in one" bestond uit The B-Brothers, Ro Deira en Jenny & Ray. De formule bestond uit het aanbieden van een spetterende show van 60 minuten muziek van drie verschillende genres Rock & Roll, Carribian en Dance-classics. Een ieder kwam dus aan zijn trekken maar na ruim vier jaar besloot zijn zangpartner Jenny het voor gezien te houden.
Ray besloot om als "solist" verder te gaan.

Bobby Darin, echte naam Walden Robert Cassotto (New York City, 14 mei 1936 - Los Angeles 20 december 1973) was een Amerikaans zanger en songwriter, die zeer populair werd in de jaren vijftig. Hij was thuis in een grote verscheidenheid aan muziekgenres, waaronder jazz, pop en folk. Enkele van zijn bekendste nummers zijn onder andere "Mack the Knife", "Beyond the Sea" en "If I were a Carpenter".
Bobby Darin werd geboren in een arm gezin van Italiaanse afkomst in The Bronx, New York. Pas later kwam hij er achter dat hij is opgevoed door zijn grootmoeder en dat de vrouw die hij als zijn zus beschouwde eigenlijk zijn echte moeder was. Zijn vader heeft Bobby nooit gekend. Op jonge leeftijd werd hij getroffen door reumatische koorts, waaraan hij een beschadigd hart heeft overgehouden. Hij moest leven met de wetenschap dat hij op jonge leeftijd zou kunnen sterven, en stortte zich geheel op de muziek. Hij leerde zichzelf verscheidene muziekinstrumenten spelen, waaronder piano, drums en gitaar.
Na drie geflopte singles verscheen in 1958 "Splish Splash", zijn eerste grote hit. Meer hits volgden en Darin werd een favoriete zanger onder het jonge rock-'n-rollpubliek. In 1959 ging hij een andere weg in met "Mack the Knife", een jazz/popbewerking van een nummer uit de Driestuiversopera van Bertolt Brecht en Kurt Weill. Het nummer bereikte de nummer éénpositie in de Amerikaanse hitlijsten en bracht Darin ook onder de aandacht bij de meer volwassen muziekliefhebber. In 1960 werd het ook in België en Nederland een hit. In 1959 won Darin meerdere Grammy Awards, waaronder die voor beste nieuwkomer en beste nummer (voor "Mack the Knife").
Op 20 december 1973 overleed hij vlak na een hartoperatie, waarbij twee van zijn hartkleppen werden vervangen. Hij is 37 jaar oud geworden. Er was geen begrafenisdienst: een van zijn laatste wensen was dat zijn lichaam werd gedoneerd aan het medisch centrum van de UCLA voor onderzoek. In 1990 werd hij postuum geplaatst in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2004 kwam er een film uit over zijn leven, Beyond the Sea. Bobby Darin werd hierin gespeeld door Kevin Spacey, die de film ook regisseerde.

Johnny Rivers (born John Henry Ramistella, November 7, 1942, New York) is an American rock and roll singer, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. His styles include folk songs, blues, and revivals of old-time rock 'n' roll songs and some original material. Rivers's greatest success came in the mid and late 1960s with a string of hit songs (including "Seventh Son", "Poor Side of Town", "Summer Rain", and "Secret Agent Man"), but he has continued to record and perform to the present.
1960s In 1960, Rivers met fellow Louisianan James Burton, the guitar player for Ricky Nelson. Burton later recommended one of Rivers' songs to Nelson, who went on to record it. In 1961, Rivers went to Los Angeles to meet Nelson, and then relocated there, working as a songwriter and studio musician.[citation needed] In 1963, Rivers's big break came when he temporarily filled in for a jazz combo at Bill Gazzarri's nightclub; the temporary gig became long-term due to positive customer response.
In 1963, Rivers recorded the theme song for the American broadcast of a British television series, "Danger Man," which starred Patrick McGoohan. At first, Rivers balked at the idea, feeling that he did not have the talent to make a record on an international label, but he eventually relented. The American version of the show was titled "Secret Agent", and the song "Secret Agent Man" reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1966. It sold one million copies, achieving gold disc status.
In 1964, Elmer Valentine gave Rivers a one-year contract to open in his new nightclub, Whisky a Go Go, on Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. The Whisky a Go Go opened three days before The Beatles released "I Want to Hold Your Hand" [citation needed] and the British Invasion knocked almost every American artist off the top of the charts. But Rivers was so popular that producer Lou Adler decided to issue Johnny Rivers Live At The Whisky A Go Go. The live album reached #12 on the charts and the single "Memphis" reached the US Hit Parade #2 spot in July 1964. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. According to Elvis Presley's friend and employee Alan Fortas, Presley played his friend (Rivers) a test pressing of "Memphis" that Elvis had made but not released. Rivers was impressed and much to Presley's chagrin, Rivers recorded and released it, even copying the arrangement (Fortas writes: "After that, Johnny was on Elvis's shit list" and was persona non grata from then on). River's version far outsold the Chuck Berry original from August 1959 which stalled at #87 in the US. (Lonnie Mack's 1963 instrumental version of "Memphis" reached the US Hit Parade top five in July; the Chuck Berry original and its British rival cover version fought it out in the UK Hit parade in November 1963.
Rivers made a successful transition from nightclub entertainer to chart-busting pop singer and had created the "Go Go sound",[citation needed] part of a scene which included Go-Go dancers. In 1964 and 1965, Rivers continued to record mostly live, Go-Go style records including "Maybellene" (another Berry cover), after which came "Mountain of Love", "Midnight Special", "Seventh Son" (written by Willie Dixon) and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" (written by Pete Seeger), all of which were hits.
Rivers wanted to try something different, he switched gears in 1966, and began to record ballads characterized by his smooth, soulful voice, and background vocalists (mostly women), he produced such successful hits as "Poor Side Of Town", which would be his biggest hit ever and his only number one record. Another hit was "Secret Agent Man", the theme from the Secret Agent television series (written by P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri). He also started his own record company, Soul City Records, where he won a Grammy Award as the producer of the 5th Dimension, which eventually recorded "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" and "Wedding Bell Blues", two number-one hits with Rivers's label. Johnny is also credited with giving songwriter Jimmy Webb a major break, when the 5th Dimension recorded Webb's song "Up, Up, and Away".
Rivers continued to record more hits, including "Baby I Need Your Lovin'" (cover of the Four Tops) and "The Tracks of My Tears" (cover of the Miracles), both went Top 10 in 1967. In 1968, Rivers released Realization, a number-five album on the LP charts that included the #14 pop chart single "Summer Rain", written by a former member of The Mugwumps, James Hendricks (not to be confused with Jimi Hendrix). The album included some of the psychedelic influences of the time and marked a subtle change in his musical direction, with more thoughtful types of songs, included such ballads as "Look To Your Soul" and "Going Back to Big Sur".

Perez Prado (b. December 11, 1916, Cuba - d. September 14, 1989, Mexico City, Mexico) was a Cuban bandleader and composer. He is commonly referred to as the "King of the Mambo".
In Mambo his orchestra was the most popular, his son, Perez Prado, Jr., continues to direct the Pérez Prado Orchestra in Mexico City to this day.
Famous pieces and hits
Pérez Prado is the composer of such famous pieces as "Mambo No. 5" (later a UK chart-topper for both Lou Bega in 1999 and animated character Bob the Builder in 2001) and "Mambo No. 8". At the height of the mambo movement, in 1955, Pérez hit the American charts at number one with a cha-cha version of "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" (composed by French composer Louiguy). It held the spot for 10 consecutive weeks. Pérez had first covered this title for the movie Underwater! in 1954, where Jane Russell can be seen dancing to "Cherry Pink". In 1958, one of Pérez's own compositions, "Patricia", became the last record to ascend to #1 on the Jockeys and Top 100 charts, both of which gave way the following week to the then newly introduced Billboard Hot 100 chart.
His popularity in the United States matched the peak of the first wave of interest in Latin music outside the Latino communities during the 1940s, 1950s and early 1960s. He also performed in films in the United States and Europe, as well as in Mexican cinema, always with his trademark goatee and turtle-neck sweaters and vests. With the end of the 1950s, his success waned, and the years gave way to new rhythms, like rock 'n roll and then pop music. His association with RCA ended in the 1960s, and his recorded output was mainly limited to smaller labels and recycled Latin-style anthologies.

Josephine Leemans-Verbustel, beter bekend als Jo Leemans (Mechelen, 13 augustus 1927) is een Belgische zangeres die in de jaren vijftig de titel "de Vlaamse Doris Day" verkreeg. Haar artiestennaam dankt ze aan haar huwelijk met acteur Marc Leemans.
Ze was een levendige tiener, maar een met een erg zwakke gezondheid (kinderverlamming toen ze drie was). Haar gezondheid zou haar het hele leven parten spelen. Zo moest ze haar studies aan het conservatorium afbreken wegens een opstoot van polio.
In 1953 kwam ze terecht bij de NIR ook via haar huwelijk met Marc Leemans van het dramatisch gezelschap van de radio. Langzaam maar zeker begon ze daar naam te maken als zangeres : voor de orkesten van Francis Bay en Fernand Terby werkt ze zich door het repertoire en de klassiekers van die tijd. Haar glorieperiode als zangeres had plaats tussen het midden van de jaren zestig (ze debuuteerde op plaat met "Heimwee" in 1954) tot vooraan de jaren zestig, in een wereld van showorkesten, Canzonissima, en een generatie zangers en zangeressen als La Esterella, Jetty Gitari, Will Ferdy en Bob Benny.
Hits die ze scoorde in de nationale hitparade waren de evergreen "Que sera, sera" (amper een maand nadat Doris Day een nummer één hit had met dat lied stond Jo Leemans op dezelfde plaats met een Nederlandse vertaling, in december 1956), "Heel mijn hart" (ook een nummer 1-hit, in 1957), "Lazarello (nº 11), "Marjoleintje" (nº 3), "Ik ben verliefd op heel de wereld" (nº 13), en "Diep in mijn hart" (nº 7 in 1960). Andere songs die ze rekent onder haar favorieten zijn "Ware Liefde" (True Love van Cole Porter), "Als sterren flonk'rend aan de hemel staan", "Weet je nog wel, die avond in de regen" en "Lieve Jo" (Hold'em Joe).
Samen met haar carrière als zangeres bouwde Jo Leemans ook een carrière als presentator voor radio en televisie. Zo presenteerde ze in 1963 op de Nederlandse AVRO-televisie het programma "Scala", waarin zij onder anderen Danny Kaye en Erroll Garner ontving.
In 1973 verliet ze Vlaanderen voor Benidorm wegens gezondheidsredenen, waar ze tot 1990 bleef wonen, omringd door drie honden en 32 katten. Na haar terugkeer in 1990 hernam ze echter al snel haar positie op de radio (met "78-toeren tijd", "De tafel van Jo en Jo" (met Jo de Poorter op Studio Brussel), "Weet je nog wel", "het Spiegelpaleis" ...).
In mei 2009 heeft Jo de hoofdrol toegezegd voor de kortfilm "MY DONNA" van filmmaker Nicolaas Rahoens. Een rol die ze samen met Will Ferdy op bewonderenswaardige manier vertolkte. Het filmpje kaapte op het Beneluxfilmfestival drie prijzen weg waaronder de prijs van de beste acteur/actrice voor Jo Leemans. Ondanks het passeren van de 83 jaar, blijft ze erg actief en wordt nog altijd graag gezien en gerespecteerd in heel Vlaanderen.

Corry Brokken is op 3 december 1935 in Breda geboren. Vanaf 1952 zong ze bij diverse ensembles en orkesten en was regelmatig op de radio te horen. In 1956 maakte ze haar televisiedebuut tijdens het nationaal songfestival, waar ze drie liedje te horen bracht, getiteld "Ik zei ja" "Voorgoed voorbij" en "'t Is Lente". Ze won de nationale finale met het lied "Voorgoed voorbij" en mocht samen met runner-up Jetty Paerl naar het eerste Eurovisie songfestival in Lugano afreizen. In 1957 deed Corry opnieuw mee aan het nationale songfestival dat ze met het liedje "Net als toen" wist te winnen. Het bleef echter niet bij nationaal succes aangezien ze de eerste Nederlandse overwinning op het Eurovisie songfestival in de wacht wist te slepen.
In 1958 werd Corry Brokken opnieuw gevraagd om deel te nemen aan het nationaal songfestival met de liedjes "Heel de Wereld" en "Weet je". Uiteindelijk koos het Nederlandse volk voor het lied "Heel de Wereld". Het Eurovisie songfestival in eigen land eindigde echter in een grote teleurstelling aangezien Corry met slechts een punt gedeeld laatste werd. Toch had Corry nog geen genoeg van het songfestival en deed in 1959 voor het vierde opeenvolgende jaar mee aan het nationaal songfestival. Samen met Bruce Low, die ze in 1958 nog had verslagen, zong ze het duet "Mijn hart en ik". Haar duet en de liedjes "Kleine zilv'ren ster" en "Iedere dag met jou", die ze solo zong, brachten haar echter niet de overwinning. In de jaren zestig had Corry veel succes met Franse chansons die in het Nederlands vertaald waren. Ze oogstte veel succes met "Milord" (1960), "Mijn ideaal" (1963), "La Mamma" (1964), "Venetië" en "Don Juan". Ook in Duitsland had ze veel succes met Duitstalige vertalingen van bekende Franse chansons. Vanaf 1961 trad Corry op in de Sleeswijk Revue naast Snip en Snap. Tevens kreeg ze van 1961 tot 1972 diverse televisieshows. In 1963 ontving ze een Edison. Op 3 april presenteerde Corry Brokken het Eurovisie songfestival en nam ze afscheid van de showbizz. Ze trok zich terug uit de spotlights en besloot rechten te gaan studeren in Utrecht. Na het behalen van haar diploma is ze samen met haar echtgenoot een advocatenpraktijk begonnen. In 1988 werd ze beëdigd als rechter in 's-Hertogenbosch.

Harold George Belafonte (Harlem (New York City), 1 maart 1927) is een Amerikaans zanger en acteur. Hij is vooral bekend geworden door een van zijn grootste hits, Banana Boat Song, en door zijn werk als Unicef-ambassadeur.
Belafonte werd geboren te New York, waar hij opgroeide in Harlem. Van 1935 tot 1939 leefde hij met zijn moeder in haar vaderland Jamaica. Na zijn terugkeer naar New York volgde Belafonte de George Washington High school. Vervolgens ging hij bij de Amerikaanse marine, waar hij diende tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Aan het eind van de jaren veertig nam hij acteerlessen. Tot grote teleurstelling van zijn enorme hoeveelheid fans, treedt hij niet meer op als zanger.
In het begin van de jaren vijftig was hij al vroeg lid van de Burgerrechtenbeweging. Belafonte was een vertrouweling van Martin Luther King. Toen hij in 1968 in een televisieshow van Petula Clark optrad, lachte Clark tijdens het zingen even en raakte Belafonte's arm aan. Ondanks protesten van sponsor Plymouth Motors werd de show toch uitgezonden. Het was de eerste keer dat op Amerikaanse televisie was te zien hoe mensen van verschillende rassen elkaar op vriendschappelijke wijze aanraakten.
Belafonte was in 1985 een van de organisatoren achter het lied We are the world van USA for Africa; een poging van talloze artiesten om geld in te zamelen voor Afrika. Het werd uitgevoerd in het Live Aid concert van dat jaar. In 1987 werd hij benoemd tot goodwill-ambassadeur bij Unicef.
Belafonte staat bekend om zijn linkspolitieke opvattingen. Verwijzend naar een beroemd citaat van Malcolm X bestempelde hij Colin Powell en Condoleezza Rice in 2002 als "huisslaven" omdat ze niet in opstand waren gekomen tegen het besluit van George W. Bush om ten oorlog te trekken tegen Irak. In 2005 noemde hij zwarte republikeinen "tirannen" en vergeleek de leden van de regering-Bush met nazi's.

Nathaniel Adams Coles (Montgomery, 17 maart 1919 - Santa Monica, 15 februari 1965) was een Amerikaans jazz-zanger, pianist en songwriter.
Nat "King" Cole zoals hij meestal genoemd wordt, werd in Montgomery, Alabama geboren en is de vader van zangeres Natalie Cole en broer van zanger Freddy Cole. Cole wordt algemeen beschouwd als de beste mannelijke vocale jazz- en balladvertolker van de jaren vijftig en zestig.
Op vierjarige leeftijd verhuist het gezin naar Chicago. Nats vader is slager en diaken in de True Light Baptist Church. De jonge Nat wordt door zijn moeder, die organiste was in de kerk, gestimuleerd om muziek te gaan studeren. Vanaf zijn twaalfde jaar bespeelt ook Nat het kerkorgel en zingt hij kerkliederen. Zijn echte interesse gaat echter al snel uit naar de jazzmuziek. Zijn ouders kunnen de belangstelling voor de jazzmuziek niet echt waarderen. Jazz wordt immers in de nachtclubs gespeeld. De oudste broer van Nat, Eddie heeft dan al een bekende jazzband, de 'Rogues of Rhythm'.
In het jaar 1936 vertrekt Nat naar Los Angeles, en geeft van 1936 tot 1945 zijn naam aan The King Cole Trio (in eerste formatie met Oscar Moore en Wesley Prince). In 1943 neemt hij het nummer 'Straighten Up and Fly Right' op, dat z'n eerste nationale hitsong wordt. Het nummer is gebaseerd op één van z'n vaders preken en op een bekend zwart volksverhaal. Cole wordt door zijn trio-opnamen als één van de groten uit de jazzwereld beschouwd.
Vanaf 1945 besluit Nat zijn bijzondere stem ook buiten de jazz te laten horen. Hij ontwikkelt zich meer en meer als (jazz)balladzanger. Zijn herkenbare stem zorgt voor een miljoenenomzet bij platenmaatschappij Capitol. Cole is de superstar van de jaren vijftig.
Wanneer hij in 1948 als eerste zwarte Amerikaan een huis koopt in de blanke buurt Hancock Park in Los Angeles vertellen de eigenaren hem dat ze geen "ongewensten" in de buurt willen. Cole antwoordt: "Ik ook niet. En als ik een ongewenst iemand zie komen, ben ik de eerste die klaagt."
In de jaren veertig is Cole de eerste Afro-Amerikaan met een eigen radioprogramma en in de jaren 1956-1957 heeft hij als eerste zwarte Amerikaan een eigen wekelijkse televisieshow bij NBC. Daarnaast treedt hij herhaaldelijk als filmacteur op, o.a. in St. Louis Blues.
Cole rookte drie pakjes cool-menthol sigaretten per dag. Volgens Cole droegen de sigaretten ertoe bij dat zijn stem voldoende laag bleef. Om die reden rookte hij voor iedere plaatopname meestal drie sigaretten achter elkaar. In het najaar van 1964 merkt Cole dat hij gewicht verliest. In oktober 1964 wordt bij hem longkanker geconstateerd. De verschillende behandelingen, waaronder een Cobalt-behandeling, slaan niet aan en Nat King Cole overlijdt begin '65 in het St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica (Californië). Nat King Cole is begraven op Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale (Californië).
Hij was getrouwd met Maria Ellington en had vijf kinderen. Ook zijn dochter Natalie Cole en zijn jongere broer Freddie Cole zijn zangers.
In de jaren negentig wordt Cole opnieuw populair, dankzij zijn dochter Nathalie Cole, die op de cd Unforgettable haar zang combineert met oude opnamen van haar vader.

Ritchie Valens (Pacoima (California), 13 mei 1941 - bij Clear Lake (Iowa), 3 februari 1959) was een Amerikaans Rock-'n-roll-artiest die stierf aan het begin van zijn carrière in een vliegtuigongeluk tezamen met Buddy Holly en The Big Bopper. Zijn echte naam was Richard Valenzuela en hij werd geboren in Pacoima bij Los Angeles. Op 17-jarige leeftijd kreeg hij zijn eerste platencontract aangeboden maar binnen een jaar verongelukte hij. De bekendste hits uit zijn korte carrière zijn "Donna" en "La Bamba"(#2), een bewerking van een Mexicaans volksliedje.
"La Bamba" was tevens de titel van de speelfilm uit 1987 die het levensverhaal van Ritchie Valens uitbeeldde. Regie was in handen van Luis Valdez en Valens werd gestalte gegeven door de acteur Lou Diamond Phillips. De titelsong werd uitgevoerd door de groep Los Lobos en werd een internationaal succes.

Lee Dorsey (geboren als Irvin Lee Dorsey, 24 september 1924 in New Orleans - 1 december 1986 in New Orleans) was een Amerikaanse pop- en R&B-zanger tijdens de zestiger jaren.
Hij brak door met de hit Working in The Cole Mine (1966). Eind jaren '60 besloot hij op te houden muziek te maken.
Born Irving Lee Dorsey in New Orleans, Louisiana, Dorsey moved to Portland, Oregon when he was ten years old. He served in the United States Navy and began a career in prizefighting. Boxing as a light heavyweight in Portland in the early 1950s, he fought under the name "Kid Chocolate" and was quite successful.
Dorsey met songwriter/producer Allen Toussaint at a party in the early 1960s, and was signed to the Fury record label. The song that launched his career was inspired by a group of children chanting nursery rhymes[1] - "Ya Ya" went to number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[2] He recorded other songs for Fury before the label folded, and Dorsey went back to his car repair business.
Toussaint later came back on the Amy label and began to work with Dorsey once again. From 1965 to 1969 Dorsey put seven songs in the Hot 100, the most successful of which was "Working in the Coal Mine" in 1966. It was to be his second and last Top Ten song. In 1970 Dorsey and Toussaint collaborated on an album entitled Yes We Can; the title song was Dorsey's last entry in the singles chart. It was later a hit for the Pointer Sisters under the title, "Yes We Can Can".
Dorsey appeared on an album with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, which led to more recordings on his own with ABC Records in the late 1970s. In 1980, Dorsey opened for English punk band The Clash on their U.S. tour.
Dorsey contracted emphysema and died in New Orleans in 1986, at the age of 61.
Dorsey's songs have been covered by artists as diverse as Petula Clark ("Ya Ya Twist," a 1962 French version of "Ya Ya") and Devo ("Working in the Coal Mine").
He is referenced in the Beastie Boys' song lyrics for "Sure Shot" - "...everything I do is funky like Lee Dorsey."

Eddy Christiani (Den Haag, 21 april 1918) is een Nederlands gitarist en zanger, componist en tekstschrijver. Christiani is nog steeds actief als zanger, al treedt hij sedert 2008 niet meer in zalen op.
Christiani staat in de Nederlandstalige levensliedtraditie, maar behalve Lou Bandy en Willy Derby waren ook verschillende soorten Amerikaanse amusementsmuziek van invloed op zijn stijl. In 1939 was hij de eerste Nederlandse artiest die een elektrische gitaar (Epiphone model Electar Model M) bespeelde. Zijn gitaarsound werd bepalend voor het geluid van het Orkest Frans Wouters (met John de Mol, de opa van John de Mol, op accordeon). In 1941 nam hij als eerste Nederlandse gitarist een elektrische gitaarsolo op in Ons Gebouw in Hilversum. 'The Windmill' was een door hemzelf geschreven instrumentaal nummer.
In 1943 moest hij wegens problemen met de Kultuurkamer onderduiken en ging hij naar België. Na de bevrijding van Brussel ging Eddy Christiani in een Engels legerorkest de Army Troupers spelen. Achter de frontlinies trok hij mee Duitsland in. In Bonn kon hij zich aansluiten bij de beroemde Cold Stream Guards (The Guards Divisional Dance Orchestra). In Hamburg trad Eddy als gastsolist met zijn elektrische gitaar op voor de BFN (British Forces Network). In 1946 keerde hij terug naar Nederland.
Na 1945 De populariteit van Eddy Christiani nam in de periode na de oorlog reusachtige vormen aan. Hij werd een waar popidool. Om aan de vele aanbiedingen te kunnen voldoen besloot Eddy samen met Frans Poptie in 1951 zijn eigen ensemble op te richten. Het Ensemble Eddy Christiani onder leiding van Frans Poptie.
De lezers van het muziekblad Tuney Tunes verkozen Eddy Christiani in 1953 tot de populairste zanger van Nederland. Hij bleef bovenaan in de poll staan tot en met 1956.
Na de opkomst van de rock-'n-roll stopte Christiani met het opnemen van platen en ging zich als gitarist toeleggen op begeleidings- en studiowerk.
In 1952 was hij de eerste Nederlander met een gouden plaat op 78-toeren met Zeemanshart. Andere bekende hits van Eddy Christiani waren Zonnig Madeira (1938), Ouwe Taaie (1943), Op De Woelige Baren (1948), Kleine Greetje Uit De Polder (1950), Spring Maar Achterop (1952), Daar Bij De Waterkant en Rosemarie Polka (1953). Kleine Greetje Uit De Polder eindigde in de Top 200, tijdens de Week van het Nederlandse Lied 2009, op nummer 94.
Vanaf de jaren zestig Met Sucu Sucu (Mijn Sombrero) maakte Eddy Christiani in 1961 een comeback. De Spaanse versie van de plaat werd in de Verenigde Staten, Duitsland en Scandinavië uitgebracht. In de Amerikaanse Billboard Hot 100 bereikte Christiani hiermee de 82e positie.
In 1962 ontdekten veel jonge aankomende gitaristen, dat het zangidool van hun ouders ook opwindende gitaarstukken kon spelen. Zijn single Little Geisha / Du, Du Liegst Mir Im Herzen paste helemaal in de stijl van de Nederlandse gitaargroepen (Shadows- en Indorock bandjes). Eddy speelde de nummers op zijn Gretsch gitaar (model Chet Atkins Nashville ) en ze waren in een schitterende lange echo sound gedompeld. Zijn instrumental Wild Geese werd in 1963 met succes door The Jumping Jewels gecoverd. Eddy Christiani werd in 1962 en 1963 door de lezers van het maandblad Muziek Parade uitgeroepen tot de populairste Nederlandse gitarist. Vanwege zijn uitbundig gebruik van echo-effecten kreeg hij in sommige kringen de bijnaam "Eddy Christianianiani".
Met het combo van Tonny Eyk was Eddy sedert de zomer van 1966 jarenlang met zijn gitaar te zien op televisie bij Willem Duys in het tv-programma "Voor De Vuist Weg".
In 2006 riep poppuntzeeland de Eddy Christiani Award in het leven. Christiani reikt hem sinds die tijd jaarlijks zelf in Vlissingen uit.
Op dinsdag 6 juni 2007 begon hij op 89-jarige leeftijd in De Speeldoos in Baarn aan een afscheidstournee met als titel "De engel op mijn schouder". Zijn producer Lex Passchier liet dit weten. Op 21 april 2008 werd zijn 90e verjaardag groots gevierd onder leiding van Hans van Willigenburg. Tijdgenoten als Annie de Reuver, alsmede Jan Akkerman en Tonny Eyk werkten mee aan het programma.

Ray Peterson (April 23, 1939 January 25, 2005) was an American pop music singer.
Ray T. Peterson was born in Denton, Texas. As a boy he had to overcome polio. Blessed with a four octave singing voice, Peterson moved to Los Angeles, California where he was signed to a recording contract by RCA Victor Records in 1958. He recorded several songs that were minor hits until "The Wonder of You" made it into the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart on June 15, 1959. The song would later be recorded by Elvis Presley, with whom Peterson became a friend.
In 1960, Peterson created his own record label with his manager Stan Shulman, called Dunes Records, and enlisted the help of record producer Phil Spector. Peterson scored a Top 10 hit with the teenage tragedy song, "Tell Laura I Love Her", and followed that success with "Corrine, Corrina" Peterson's dramatic ballad, "I Could Have Loved You So Well", written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and produced by Spector, only reached #57 on the U.S. chart.[1] He then tried another death disc, "Give Us Your Blessing", but this time nobody was interested.
His last charting hit was "Missing You". By the mid 1960s he had become something of a phenomenon on the west coast of the United States, appearing live in numerous concerts with Paul McCartney lookalike, Keith Allison.
His performances at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium, produced by Fred Vail, beginning in 1963 helped fuel a revival of "The Wonder of You," as well as launching his new relationship with MGM Records, an alliance that produced two albums; The Very Best of Ray Peterson which featured most of the Dunes singles, and The Other Side of Ray Peterson, which included many of his nightclub songs. He later moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and by the 1970s when the hit records stopped coming, Peterson became a Baptist Church minister and occasionally played the oldies music circuit.
Peterson was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
Peterson died of cancer in 2005, in Smyrna, Tennessee, aged 65. He left a widow and four sons and three daughters. He was interred in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens cemetery in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Curtis Lee (born 28 October 1941, Yuma, Arizona, U.S.) is an American singer of the early 1960s and, twice over, one of the beneficiaries of 1961 productions by Phil Spector. These were "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" (U.S. #7) and "Under the Moon of Love" (U.S. #46).
Lee began his recording career in 1959, and the following year was signed by Dunes Records after being invited to cut a demo if he came to New York. By the time he made it to New York in late 1960, he had started writing songs in partnership with a friend, Tommy Boyce, who later became one-half of the Boyce and Hart songwriting-producing-singing duo. Lee's first two singles, "Special Love" and "Pledge of Love," were passionate but otherwise unexceptional performances that understandably failed to chart, but for his third record, Dunes agreed to cut a Lee-Boyce original called "Pretty Little Angel Eyes." Handsome and photogenic, Lee had a vocal approach close to the teen idols of the period. Spector's genius with the productions, besides his deft handling of the instrumental support, was to provide fills with strong doo-wop riffing from an R&B vocal group, The Halos, to produce two classic rock and roll tunes. The Halos appeared on "Pretty Little Angel Eyes", and would achieve further recognition by backing up Barry Mann on "Who Put The Bomp (in the Bomp, Bomp, Bomp)"
In the UK, "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" was a minor hit record, going no higher than #47 in 1961

The Champs waren een instrumentale rock-'n-roll-band, opgericht in 1958. De band staat vooral bekend vanwege hun hit "Tequila". De muziek van de band is kenmerkend vanwege de sterk aanwezige saxofoon en door de Latijnse accenten die in de nummers werd toegepast. De band wordt door velen gezien als een eendagsvlieg, hoewel ze meerdere nummers hebben opgenomen en tot en met de mid-zestiger jaren actief waren.
