De Four Tak
De Four Tak is een smartlappenband uit Oud-Gastel opgericht door Henk en Cees Tak. Later kwamen hier nog Kees en Fons Tak (geen familie) bij. De band ging in 1972 uit elkaar. Henk gaat hierna samen met zijn vrouw verder als het duo Corrie & Henk. In 1983 komt de groep weer bij elkaar voor reünieconcerten.
De West-Brabantse band stond onder contract bij Telstar, de platenmaatschappij van Johnny Hoes. Op 24 januari 2010 overleed mede-oprichter en zanger Henk Tak op 71-jarige leeftijd aan de gevolgen van prostaatkanker.
De band verkocht meer dan 1 miljoen geluidsdragers.

Suzie (pseudoniem van Maria Martina Carina (Martina) Peereboom) (Tilburg, 21 augustus 1946 - Nordmaling, 3 maart 2008) was een Nederlands/Zweeds zangeres en circusartieste.
De ouders van Martina Peereboom werkten bij Circus Boltini en reisden met het gezelschap Europa door. Martina trad al vanaf jeugd mee op. In 1960, toen ze woonachtig was in Zweden en ook de Zweedse nationaliteit had aangenomen, verlegde ze haar aandacht deels naar een zangcarrière in het smartlap- en tienerliefdegenre in de talen die ze vloeiend sprak: het Nederlands, Duits, Zweeds, Engels, Frans, Fins, Spaans, Deens en Italiaans. In 1963 won ze in Helsinki een talentenjacht en sloot zich aan bij de Britse groep The Nicholls Family. Ook kreeg ze in Zweden voor heel Europa een platencontract aangeboden bij Sonet; haar singles verschenen in Nederland bij Decca, in Duitsland bij Disques Vogue. Haar eerste single Johnny loves me verscheen in het het Zweeds, Duits, het Italiaans , Engels, Nederlands en Spaans, en werd ook in Nederland een hit. Het maakte haar zó populair dat de Beatles in Zweden in 1963/'64 haar voorprogramma waren en ze een rol kreeg in de film Åsa-Nisse i popform. Ook in West-Duitsland was ze zeer populair en scoorde ze in de jaren '60 6 hits waarvan 3 top 10-hits.
In 1965 huwde ze de Britse bassist Mike Watson die ze kende uit de tijd van de tournees met The Nicholls Family; het huwelijk duurde niet lang. Suzie noemde zichzelf sinds het huwelijk Maria Watson en in de Zweedse showbusiness Suzie Watson.
Datzelfde jaar 1965 nam Suzie samen met een team verder bestaande uit Greetje Kauffeld, Liesbeth List, Connie van Bergen en Jan Arntz voor Nederland deel aan het festival Knokke Cup. Haar tweede single, De wereld is leeg zonder jou, was haar grootste en laatste Nederlandse hit, in 1966, die later mede dankzij de Arbeidsvitaminen en Stan Haags Jukebox uitgroeide tot een evergreen. In 1967 zocht Suzie samenwerking met de Zweedse rock 'n roll-revivalgroep The Plommons; samen traden ze op als Suzie & the Sunny Girls.
In 1968, toen haar carrière buiten Zweden op z'n retour was, verwisselde ze platenlabel Vogue voor Ariola en stopte ze haar optredens buiten de Zweedse grenzen om meer tijd te wijden aan het huiselijk leven; inmiddels was Martina de gescheiden alleenstaande moeder van een dochter. Tot in 1972 nam ze nog platen in het Zweeds op, trad met The Plommons op als Suzie & the Sunny Girls en had een eigen radio- en televisieshow.
Na haar showbusinesscarrière stichtte ze met de Zweedse zangeres Eleanor Bodel een restaurant waar ze ook samen als zangduo in optraden; Suzie kreeg in die tijd vanwege haar lesbische levensstijl de bijnaam Suzie the lesbo. In 2004 werkte ze mee aan de nostalgische SVT-entertainmentshow Diggiloo.
Op 5 maart 2008 werd Martina thuis dood aangetroffen voor haar televisie; autopsie wees uit dat ze in de nacht van 2 op 3 maart na middernacht overleden moest zijn. Martina Peereboom is gecremeerd in Tilburg en is overleefd door haar in Nederland levende moeder en haar in Denemarken levende dochter Rose-Marie. In Nederland besteedde de pers, behalve het Brabants Dagblad een jaar later, geen aandacht aan haar overlijden

Karl Schriebl was acht jaar oud (13 november a.s. wordt hij 69) toen zijn ouders hem een ,,Wiener" accordeon gaven, weinig vermoedend, dat hun zoon vele jaren later met dit instrument nog eens grote triomfen zou oogsten. Hij was twaaf jaar toen hij naar Berlijn werd uitgenodigd (zelf woonde hij in de buurt van Wenen) waar hij zijn eerste opname maakte op wasrollen. Dit waren de gebrekkige voorlopers van de perfecte gramofoonplaten, die wij tegenwoordig kennen. Op 17 jarige leeftijd werd hij tijdens een wedstrijd ontdekt door een Amerikaanse impressario, die zo onder de ban geraakte van Karl's muzikaliteit, dat hij hem prompt een tournee in Amerika aanbood. Met beide handen nam Karl Schriebl dit aanbod aan.
In 1955 maakte hij zijn eerste gramofoonplaat, getiteleld ,,Schöne Barbara". Niet tevreden over het resultaat, nam hij voor de volgende repetitie Jos Hupperst mee, iemand die de sporen op de accordeon reeds jarenlang had verdiend. Hoe hoog de muzikale kwaliteiten van dit tweetal thans worden aangeslagen, bewijst wel het reeds eerder genoemd aantal gramofoonplaten, dat van hen in omloop is. toen zij in november de gouden plaat ontvangen, bood de N.V. Phonogram hen bij die gelegenheid tevens een programma aan, twee grote artisten waardig. Corry Brokken, Willy Alberti en Tobi Rex , om maar enkele te noemen, brachten door hun optreden Karl en Jos een verdiende hulde. Ook de televisie wist de gouden-plaat-bezitters te vinden. U herinnert zich ongetwijfeld nog hun succes-vol optreden op 1 januari j.l.. Nog eer het programma teneinde was stond de telefoonlijn bij de VARA roodgloeiend van enthousiaste kijkers die het duo nogmaals op het beeldscherm wilden zien en horen. Sandy, pseudoniem van Anita Weijers (Valkenswaard, 6 september 1961), is een voormalig Nederlands zangeres.
Ze scoorde in januari 1979 een hit met het nummer "Ik ben verliefd op John Travolta". Het nummer kwam binnen op de 36ste plek in de Nederlandse Top 40 en bereikte uiteindelijk de 10de plaats. Dit nummer werd geproduceerd door Tom Peters.
Naast dit nummer had ze in 1979 nog twee Top-40-noteringen. Het nummer "Tot ziens mijn kleine teddybeer" eindige op de 17de plek en het nummer "Doe de hoelahoep" op de 19de plek. Haar latere singles bereikten de hitlijsten niet.
Grace Jones, geboren als Grace Mendoza (Spanish Town, 19 mei 1948) is een Jamaicaans model, zangeres en actrice.
Haar ouders, Marjorie Jones en dominee en politicus Robert W. Jones, verhuisden in 1965, samen met Grace en haar tweelingbroer Christian, van Jamaica naar Syracuse, in de Amerikaanse staat New York. Voor ze begon te werken als model studeerde Jones theater aan het Onondaga Community College.
Toen ze begin twintig was verhuisde Jones naar Parijs waar ze zich beroemd en berucht maakte door in disco's en op feestjes topless te verschijnen in gezelschap van Jerry Hall, de toenmalige vriendin van Mick Jagger. Tijdens een feest in een restaurant werd ze ontdekt door een platenproducer toen ze zich, op de tonen van Dirty Ol' Man van The Three Degrees, dansend op een tafel begaf.
Er werden drie singles uitgebracht - I Need A Man, Sorry en That's The Trouble - en in 1977 verscheen haar tamelijk succesvolle debuutalbum Portfolio op het label Island Records. Het nummer La vie en rose (een cover van het bekende chanson van Edith Piaf) werd een Europese hit. Hierna volgen twee minder succesvolle albums: Fame (1978) en Muse (1979). Alle drie albums staan vol met campy disco-hits en Jones werd erg geliefd in de gayscene. De hoezen van deze drie albums werden gemaakt door kunstenaar Richard Bernstein.
In deze periode kwam Jones ook in contact met kunstenaar Andy Warhol. Ze werd tijdelijk zijn muze en vergezelde hem vaak tijdens bezoekjes aan de beroemde New Yorkse nachtclub Studio 54.
In 1980 verscheen het album Warm Leatherette waarmee Jones artistiek gezien een geheel andere richting insloeg. Het album bevatte grotendeels covers van onder andere Chrissie Hynde en Roxy Music. Ook onderging Jones, onder leiding van stilist en toenmalig partner Jean Paul Goude, een drastische verandering qua uiterlijk. Haar androgyne, onderkoelde imago met het beroemde blockhead-kapsel, werd haar handelsmerk en zou haar wereldberoemd maken.

Margaretha Geertruida Maria (Monique) Smit (Volendam, 9 april 1989) is een Nederlandse zangeres en televisiepresentatrice. Monique is de zus van zanger Jan Smit.
Smit werd bekend op televisie met het programma Gewoon Jan Smit, een reallife-soap van haar broer Jan Smit. In het voorjaar van 2007 deed ze mee aan het Tien-programma Just The Two Of Us, waarin ze onder professionele begeleiding een muzikale carrière begon. Haar partner in dat programma was Xander de Buisonjé. Smit en haar partner verloren de finale van Edwin Evers en zijn partner Berget Lewis. Voordat ze deelnam aan de show Just the Two of Us, was Smit kapster.
Voor Kerst 2006 zong ze met broer Jan het liedje Kerst voor iedereen, dat als b-kant verscheen op de single Cupido. In 2007 tekende ze een platencontract, waarna haar eerste solosingle Wild eind juni uitkwam. Later dat jaar stond er een album gepland, maar dit werd uitgesteld, net als haar tweede single vanwege stemproblemen.
Eind 2007 tekende Smit een contract bij de TROS en na het uitbrengen van haar hit Wild werd ze gevraagd om het muziekprogramma Z@pp Kids Top 20 te presenteren, omdat EliZe het te druk had met haar muziekcarrière. Op 22 december 2007 werd de eerste uitzending uitgezonden. Sinds 2010 presenteert Smit ook dagelijks het programma 'Wild van Muziek' op Sterren 24. Daar was ze in december 2010 ook gastvrouw van de Sterren 24 Awards, samen met Kees Tol en Tim Douwsma.
Op 17 september 2010 werd de single Zie Wel Hoe Ik Thuis Kom gelanceerd van haar broer, waarop zij samen met Jan op de B-kant met When You're Gone te horen is. Het duet Eén zomeravond met jou dat ze in 2011 uitbracht samen met Douwsma, is een cover van het Italiaanse lied Sara perche ti amo van Ricchi e Poveri.

The Crests were a New York R&B doo-wop group of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Their most popular song was "16 Candles", which rose to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959. It sold over one million copies, earning a gold disc. The interracial group had three black members (one female), one Puerto Rican, and one Italian-American.
The band was founded by J. T. Carter and included Talmoudge Gough, Harold Torres, and Patricia Van Dross (older sister of R&B great Luther Vandross). Carter selected vocalist Johnny Mastrangelo (later just Johnny Maestro) to perform as lead vocalist for the group. Maestro's vocal style on the group's recordings became instantly recognizable and a juke box favorite of the national teen audiences. Maestro's quality vocals, great song selections, and recordings with dance-easy beats made the winning combination for charted hits. The group had several Top 40 hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s on Coed Records, including "16 Candles", "Six Nights a Week", "The Angels Listened In", "A Year Ago Tonight", "Step By Step" and "Trouble In Paradise". They also charted with "Sweetest One" (Joyce label) in 1957. The Crests appeared and performed several times on national teen dance television shows in the late 1950s.
Van Dross left The Crests in 1958 after recording two singles for Joyce Records. Maestro left for a solo career in 1961. He would later join The Del Satins, which would merge with The Rhythm Method to become Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge. They had a Top 5 hit with "The Worst That Could Happen" in 1969. His place in The Crests was taken by new lead James Ancrum. The group recorded a new single, "Little Miracles". It was the first single not to chart in the Top 100. They also recorded "Guilty" (Selma label). Gough quit the group after the single, and was replaced by Gary Lewis (not to be confused with Gary Lewis of Gary Lewis & the Playboys fame). The group failed to find success throughout the decade.
Torres would also be gone by the late 1960s. The group continued as a trio of Carter, Ancrum, and Lewis. This lineup continued until 1978, when the group split. Carter went on to sing with Charlie Thomas' Drifters.
Carter then reformed the group in 1980. He auditioned over 200 singers, finally settling on lead Bill Damon, Greg Sereck, and Dennis Ray and New York drummer Jon Ihle. Carter continued the group well into the 1990s. He sold the trademarks to The Crests name to Tommy Mara in the late 1990s. Mara was Carter's lead vocalist at the time, and now continues the group without Carter. Carter now performs as part of the three person group Starz. Lewis is now singing with The Cadillacs.
The 1984 John Hughes teen film, Sixteen Candles, took its title from The Crests' song, which was re-recorded by The Stray Cats for the Sixteen Candles soundtrack.
In 1987, Maestro, Carter, Torres and Gough reunited as The Crests for a reunion concert in Peekskill, New York. Patricia Van Dross died in 1993 of complications from diabetes. Hal Torres and Tommy Gough are also deceased. Johnny Maestro, died Wednesday, March 24th, 2010, at his home in Cape Coral, Florida. He was 70 and had lived in Islip, New York, until 2003.
In April 2010, the Los Angeles-based rights-management firm Beach Road Music, LLC, acquired the Coed Records catalog, subsequently re-releasing the Maestro song "The Great Physician"[5] on the 2011 compilation album From The Vault: The Coed Records Lost Master Tapes, Volume 1. "The Great Physician" was originally released in 1960 as Coed 527, under the pseudonym "Johnny Masters".

The Surfaris were an American surf rock band formed in Glendora, California in 1962. They are best known for two songs that hit the charts in the Los Angeles, California area, and nationally by May 1963: "Surfer Joe" on the A-side and "Wipe Out" on the B-side of a 45 RPM single.
The original band members were Ron Wilson (drums), Jim Fuller (lead guitar), Bob Berryhill (rhythm guitar) and Pat Connolly (bass). Saxophone player Jim Pash joined after their "Wipe Out" / "Surfer Joe" recording sessions at Pal Studios. Ken Forssi, later of Love, played bass with The Surfaris after Pat Connolly.
Wilson's energetic drum solo made "Wipe Out" one of the best-remembered instrumental songs of the period. "Wipe Out" is also remembered particularly for its introduction before the music starts, a cracking sound (imitating a breaking surf board), and a maniacal laugh followed by the only two words of the song, "wipe out" - added by their then manager Dale Smallin. "Wipe Out" was written in the studio by the four original members (Berryhill, Connolly, Fuller, Wilson) and was originally going to be titled "Switchblade". It sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc.
The band released a series of records, with two other singles, "Surfer Joe" and "Point Panic", having an impact on the charts. Point Panic is a renowned surfing venue in Hawaii named after the song.
The 1963 Surfaris disbanded in 1966 but have periodically reunited and are still active as of 2011[update], performing and recording, often re-recording their old and new songs. They still perform as two separate groups, Bob Berryhill's Surfaris (Bob is the only original member that still performs) and Jim Fuller's Surfaris, all over the United States and Europe with a large fan base.
Following the death of television personality Morton Downey, Jr., news reports and obituaries incorrectly credited him as the composer of "Wipe Out" (as well as The Chantays' "Pipeline"). As of 2010[update], Downey's official website continues to make this claim.
Drummer Ron Wilson died on 7 May 1989, one month short of his 44th birthday. Wilson had released an album of his songs, entitled Lost It In The Surf, on Bennet House Records of Grass Valley, California, which was recorded in June 1987. A very small number of cassettes of this album were produced. Lost It in the Surf included a cover of "Louie Louie", complete with Scottish bagpipes.

Amen Corner was a successful Welsh rock group, formed in late 1966 in Cardiff, Wales.
The band was named after The Amen Corner, a weekly disc spin at the Victoria Ballroom (later to become The Scene Club) in Cardiff, Wales, where every Sunday night Dr. Rock would play the best soul music from the United States.
Initially they specialised in a blues and jazz-orientated style, but were steered by their record labels into more commercial pastures. Their first singles and album appeared on Decca's subsidiary label Deram see "Discography" below but they left at the end of 1968 to join Immediate, where they were instantly rewarded with a No. 1, "(If Paradise Is) Half as Nice" in early 1969, followed by another Top 5 entry with the Roy Wood composition, "Hello Susie".
After recording a final studio album, Farewell to the Real Magnificent Seven, with a cover version of The Beatles' "Get Back" released as their swansong, they disbanded at the end of 1969. The band also appeared as themselves in the 1969 horror film, Scream and Scream Again.
Whilst saxophone player Allan Jones went on to form Judas Jump, guitarist and vocalist Andy Fairweather Low led Dennis Bryon (drums), Blue Weaver (organ), Clive Taylor (bass) and Neil Jones (guitar) into a new band, Fair Weather. The band scored a UK No. 6 hit with "Natural Sinner" in 1970 and recorded one album before disbanding after Blue left to join The Strawbs a year later.
Fairweather Low went on to a successful solo career in the 1970s, notably with the Top 10 hit "Wide Eyed and Legless" (1975); he became a regular player with Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Roger Waters. Blue Weaver joined Strawbs as Rick Wakemans replacement and later after successful 1974 tour with Mott The Hoople went on to join the Bee Gees where Dennis Bryon was now the drummer. Blue Weaver also played keyboards for many artists as a session player and later Fairlight programmer.
Amen Corner's Decca back catalogue has been reissued as part of 'The Collection' series; and their Immediate work, including their singles, live album and material recorded for an unreleased studio album, on If Paradise Was Half as Nice: The Immediate Anthology.

The Cascades were an American vocal group best known for their single "Rhythm of the Rain", recorded in 1962 and an international hit the following year.
In 1960, the Silver Strands were a group of United States Navy personnel serving on the USS Jason (AR-8) based in San Diego, California. They recruited John Gummoe, who had originally acted as their manager, and left the Navy to become The Thundernotes. After the departure of original guitarist Len Green, the group's membership consolidated as John Claude Gummoe (born August 2, 1938, Cleveland, Ohio) (lead vocals), Eddie Snyder (guitar), David Szabo (keyboards), Dave Stevens (bass), and Dave Wilson (drums).Their first single was an instrumental, "Thunder Rhythm", on the Del-Fi label.
The group then started to get more interested in vocal harmony, influenced by the Beach Boys. They recorded demos which ended up with Barry De Vorzon at Valiant Records, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers, who signed them up and also changed their name to The Cascades inspired by a nearby box of dishwashing detergent. Their first release, "There's A Reason", became a small regional hit, and, in summer 1962, they went to Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles and recorded a song which Gummoe had written in his Navy days while on watch during a thunderstorm. The musicians on the recording included the "Wrecking Crew" - Hal Blaine on drums, Carol Kaye on bass and Glen Campbell on guitar - and it was arranged by Perry Botkin. "Rhythm of the Rain" was issued in November 1962. It rose to #3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1963, and became a major hit in over 80 countries. It peaked at #5 in the UK Singles Chart. "Rhythm of the Rain" sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
The Cascades continued to record, producing an album and several further singles, including the follow-up "The Last Leaf", but none matched the charm or success of their big hit. The group did continue to receive major radio airplay in their hometown, San Diego. The Cascades' cover version of Bob Lind's "Truly Julie's Blues" received spins on KCBQ and KGB in 1966, and their song "Maybe The Rain Will Fall" did fairly well on San Diego radio charts in the summer of 1969.
The group stayed active for some years, playing local San Diego clubs like The Cinnamon Cinder, and at other times, touring widely. In 1967, The Cascades appeared onscreen in the Crown International Pictures teen comedy adventure film, Catalina Caper, which included their version of a song written by Ray Davies of the Kinks, "There's A New World."
Gummoe left the group in 1967 to pursue a solo career and later formed the band Kentucky Express. The Cascades, with Wilson and Snyder remaining as original members, finally split up in 1975. Snyder later recorded country music under the name Eddie Preston. Gummoe recorded a dance mix of "Rhythm of the Rain" in 1990.The group reformed in 1995 and again in 2004, touring the US and the Philippines, where they retained a fan following. Dave Wilson died in 2000, aged 63.
A compilation CD of the Cascades best moments was issued in 1999. That same year, performing rights organization, BMI (Broadcast Music Inc) announced the "Top 100 Songs of the Century." to receive airplay on radio or television in the U.S., with "Rhythm of the Rain"

The Tremeloes is een Britse groep die vooral succes had in de jaren '60. Ze waren oorspronkelijk de begeleidingsband van Brian Poole.
Als Brian Poole & the Tremeloes scoorden zij in Engeland vanaf 1961 een reeks hits, waarvan Do you love me? in 1963 aldaar de eerste plaats van de hitparade bereikte. Nadat het niet meer boterde tussen de leden van de begeleidingsband en hun voorman gingen ze in 1965 elk hun eigen weg. Brian Poole verdween al snel in de anonimiteit. De Tremeloes (Alan Blakely, Len 'Chip' Hawkes, Rick West en Dave Munden) waren echter regelmatig in de internationale hitparades te vinden.
The Tremeloes begonnen in 1967 aan een half decennium van hits, te beginnen bij het door Cat Stevens geschreven Here comes my baby. Er volgden meer successen, waarvan Silence is Golden (1967) en My little Lady (1968) de grootste waren. De groep kenmerkte zich voornamelijk door pretentieloze uptempo songs, zoals Even the bad times are good (1967), Helule helule (1968) en Once on a Sunday morning (1969). Het nummer Yellow River werd hen aangeboden door componist Jeff Christie, maar brachten ze aanvankelijk niet zelf uit. De band Christie - rond Jeff Christie en de broer van gitarist Alan Blakely - werd speciaal gevormd om het nummer uit te brengen, waarbij de zangpartij van Jeff Christie werd toegevoegd aan de reeds ingespeelde begeleiding van The Tremeloes. Het resulteerde in 1970 in een grote hit. The Tremeloes zongen ook You en What Can I Do? van Raymond O'Sullivan (die later bekend zou worden als Gilbert O'Sullivan). Begin jaren zeventig probeerde The Tremeloes een iets 'ruiger' image aan te meten met rockachtige singles als 'Blue Suede Tie'. De laatste hit is ook uit die tijd, maar toch meer 'poppie': 'I Like it That way' (1972). Net als veel andere bands uit de jaren 60 en 70 zijn ook The Tremeloes bij tijd en wijle in 'revivaloptredens' terug te vinden. Dave Munden is in al die jaren de enige constante factor geweest, hoewel tegenwoordig ook Rick West (die zich weer Rick Westwood noemt) deel uitmaakt van de groep. Chip Hawkes heeft de groep een paar keer verlaten om vervolgens weer terug te keren, maar hij maakt de laatste jaren deel uit van de groep Class of '64 met ex-leden van Smokie en The Rubettes.

Chas & Dave (often billed as Chas 'n' Dave) are an English pop rock duo, most notable as creators and performers of a musical style labelled "rockney", which mixes "pub singalong, music-hall humour, boogie-woogie piano and pre-Beatles rock 'n' roll". For a time, "Rockney" was also the name of their record label, and they achieved several British chart hits, their major breakthrough being "Gertcha" in 1979, which peaked at #20 and was the first of eight Top 40 hit singles the duo played on. The act has also enjoyed nine best-selling albums.
It was announced in September 2009 that the pair would no longer be working together as Dave Peacock planned to retire from the band following the recent death of his wife. However, in 2010 the band announced a final tour in 2011

De Kreuners is een Vlaamse rockband die ontstond in 1978. De groepsnaam is een knipoog naar Bob Marleys band The Wailers. De oorspronkelijke naam was "Kuifje in Oostende".
Ze vielen op op de Humo's Rock Rally, maar ze kregen geen platencontract. Dus gingen ze naar Londen om hun eerste single 'Nummer een' op te nemen. Deze werd meteen een groot succes. Later kwamen nog vele andere grote hits, zoals onder andere 'Wat komen moet dat komt', 'Cous Cous Kreten', 'Meisje, meisje' en 'Ik wil je'. Hierna hebben De Kreuners succes na succes, tot in Frankrijk toe, ondanks hun Nederlands repertoire.

Vulcano was een Nederlandse band, bestaande uit Jos Groothuizen, Dee Dee (pseudoniem van Anna Dekkers), Suzanne Venneker en René van der Wel. De groep werd in 1981 samengesteld door Hans van Hemert.
Vulcano deed in 1983 mee aan het Nationaal Songfestival en werd daar tweede met het nummer Een beetje van dit, een beetje van dat. Dit nummer werd ondanks de tweede plaats een grote hit in Nederland. Na dit succes volgde nog een hit met Als je haar maar goed zit.
In 1986 ging de band uit elkaar.

Dire Straits (1977-1995) was een Britse rockband met als veruit bekendste lid zanger/gitarist/songwriter Mark Knopfler. De band is onder andere bekend geworden door nummers als Sultans of Swing, Private Investigations, Brothers in Arms en Money for Nothing.
De band had meteen grote successen met hun debuutalbum Dire Straits en de single Sultans of Swing. In 1985 verscheen Brothers in Arms, een van de eerste volledig digitaal opgenomen platen. Het album is met 269 weken in de Nederlandse Album Top 100 het langst genoteerde album aller tijden, al zijn dit geen aaneengesloten weken.
Na 1995 heeft Dire Straits niets nieuws meer uitgegeven en hebben ze nog eenmaal samen opgetreden.
Dire Straits en Mark Knopfler verkochten samen meer dan 120 miljoen albums en singles. In Nederland verkocht de band ruim 2,5 miljoen platen
Mark Knopfler, zijn jongere broer David Knopfler, John Illsley en Pick Withers hebben de band in 1977 opgericht. De naam Dire Straits (Ned: Ernstig in het nauw zitten) verwijst naar de financiële moeilijkheden die de band in zijn beginjaren kende en is verzonnen door een vriend van John Illsley. De band schraapte 120 pond bij elkaar en besloot een demotape met vijf nummers op te nemen. De tape bevatte de nummers Wild West End, Sultans of Swing, Down to the Waterline, Sacred Loving en Water of Love. Ze stuurden deze tape naar de DJ Charlie Gillett die een show genaamd Honky Tonkin had op de radio op BBC Radio London. Gillett vond de muziek zo goed dat hij Sultans of Swing zelfs in zijn show draaide.
Twee maanden later tekende Dire Straits een contract met Phonogram Records en Ed Bicknell werd de manager

Rick James (Buffalo (New York), 1 februari 1948 Los Angeles, 6 augustus 2004) (pseudoniem van James Johnson Jr.) was een Amerikaans zanger, musicus, liedschrijver en platenproducent. Hij is vooral bekend om zijn superhit "Super Freak".
Hij ging op vijftienjarige leeftijd in dienst bij de Amerikaanse Naval Reserve, maar deserteerde al vroeg en trok naar Toronto (Canada); daar speelde hij in de groep The Mynah Birds met onder andere Neil Young. Daar nam hij ook de artiestennaam Rick James aan. De groep nam in het midden van de jaren 1960 enkele nummers op voor het platenlabel Motown die echter niet werden uitgebracht. De groep ging uit elkaar; een paar jaar later kwam Rick James opnieuw onder contract bij Motown als songschrijver, producent en artiest. In 1977 vormde hij een eigen band, The Stone City Band, en in 1978 bracht hij een eerste plaat uit onder zijn eigen naam, "Come Get It!", waaruit het nummer You and I nummer één werd op de Amerikaanse R&B-hitlijst. Zijn stijl was een mengeling van rock en funk (ook wel funk 'n' roll of punk funk genoemd). Een ander nummer één-hit was Give It to Me Baby uit 1981, dat net zoals zijn grootste internationale hit Super Freak op het album "Street Songs" stond. Cold Blooded uit 1983 was zijn derde nummer één R&B-hit; in dat jaar had hij ook een hit met Ebony Eyes, een duet met Smokey Robinson.
Hij produceerde ook opnamen van The Temptations (die op Super Freak ook meezongen), de Mary Jane Girls en Teena Marie.
In 1986 had hij zijn laatste grote hit met Loosey's Rap. Zijn losbandige levensstijl (hij was naar eigen zeggen met "duizenden" vrouwen naar bed gegaan), drugs en contractuele problemen eisten echter hun tol en hij belandde verschillende malen in de gevangenis.
In 1997 nam hij de draad weer op; hij trouwde met de 27-jarige danseres Tanya Hijazi, en bracht een nieuwe plaat "Urban Rapsody" uit, waaraan onder meer Snoop Doggy Dogg en Bobby Womack meewerkten.
Rick James stierf op 6 augustus 2004 aan een hartaanval.
In 1990 gebruikte MC Hammer de instrumentale track van Super Freak voor zijn grote hit U Can't Touch This. Voor deze samenwerking kreeg James zijn enige Grammy Award.

Isabelle Adam (Isabelle A) (Gent, 25 mei 1975) is een Vlaamse zangeres die eind jaren 80, begin jaren 90 bekend werd als tieneridool met hits als "Hé Lekker Beest", "Blank of Zwart" en "Hemels".
Ze werd geboren als Isabelle Adam in een Gentse volkswijk. Haar vader was garagehouder. In 1987, tijdens een talentenjacht van Walter Capiau, werd ze op haar twaalfde ontdekt door producer Marc Van Beveren. Ze bracht de single "On My Own" uit, een cover van het Griekse zangeresje Nikka Costa waarmee ze in de finale van het soundmixcircuit terecht kwam.
In 1987 kwam haar eerste eigen single op de markt: "De Troika". Op de BRT (nu Eén) mocht ze het jongerenprogramma "Tv Tam Tam" presenteren, waarin ze jongeren interviewde over bepaalde thema's en ook elke aflevering er een lied over zong.
Het grote succesIn 1990 werd haar nummer "Hé Lekker Beest" een grote nummer één-hit die negen maanden in de hitparade bleef staan en platina haalde. Haar tweede single, "Ik Weet Wat Ik Wil" (1991) haalde goud en haar debuutalbum, "Isabelle A." werd platina. De single, "Blank of Zwart" die ze zong tijdens een beruchte aflevering van het BRT-programma Panorama toonde haar engagement tegen racisme. De reportage toonde haar terwijl ze het nummer zong en buiten het Vlaams Blok luidruchtig protesteerde tegen de opvang van asielzoekers in Lint. De 16-jarige zangeres verliet op dat ogenblik ook definitief de schoolbanken. Haar ouders waren een jaar voordien gescheiden. Terugblikkend op haar succes als jeugdidool heeft Isabelle A. al dikwijls aangegeven dat ze regelmatig ongelukkig was doordat ze zo vaak moest optreden en haar ouders en leeftijdsgenootjes amper kon zien.
In 1992 verscheen vervolgens het album Zeventien waarvan "Ik heb je nodig" en "Weet je nog" wederom grote hits werden. Ze richtte hierna met Theresa Platteau en Prince Far Out "Interactiv" op, een internationaal danceproject waaruit in 1994 de single "Slam" voortkwam. Intussen nam ze ook haar derde album op 'Jij doet me leven' waarvan de single "Je Mag Altijd Op Me Rekenen" de Zomerhit van Radio 2 won voor beste Belgische productie.

Barry Mann (born Barry Imberman, 9 February 1939, Brooklyn, New York) is an American songwriter, and part of a successful songwriting partnership with his wife, Cynthia Weil.
Mann and lyricist Cynthia Weil operated a publishing company called Dyad Music. Mann's first hit single as a writer was "She Say (Oom Dooby Doom)", a Top 20 song for The Diamonds in 1959. Mann co-wrote the song with Gerry Goffin. In 1961, Mann had his biggest hit to that time with "I Love How You Love Me", written with Larry Kolber and a No. 5 single for The Paris Sisters. (Seven years later, Bobby Vinton would take the song into the Top 10.) Also in 1961, Mann himself hit the Top 40 as a performer with a novelty song co-written with Goffin, "Who Put The Bomp", which parodied the nonsense words of the then-popular doo-wop genre and made the Top 40.
Despite his success as a singer with "Who Put the Bomp", Mann chose to channel the bulk of his creativity into songwriting, forming a prolific partnership with Weil, a lyricist he met while both were staff songwriters at Don Kirshner's and Al Nevin's Aldon Music, whose offices were located near the famed composing-and-publishing factory, the Brill Building. Mann and Weil, who married in 1961, helped pioneer the more socially conscious side of the Brill Building-era songbook with hits such as "Uptown" by The Crystals, "We Gotta Get out of This Place" by the Animals, "Magic Town" by the Vogues and "Kicks" by Paul Revere & the Raiders. (Mann and Weil were upset when "Only in America", a song they'd written with the team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and originally conceived for and recorded by The Drifters as a cynical broadside against racial prejudice, was re-worked by Leiber and Stoller into a uncontroversial hit for Jay & the Americans.)
As of May 2009[update], Mann's song catalog lists 635 songs. He has received 56 pop, country, and R&B awards from Broadcast Music Incorporated, and 46 Millionaire Awards for radio performances numbering over one million plays. The song "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", co-written with Weil and Phil Spector, was the most played song of the 20th century, with more than 14 million plays.
Mann has composed songs for films, most notably "Somewhere Out There", co-written with Weil and James Horner, for the 1986 animated hit "An American Tail". Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram, who performed the song as a duet over the film's closing credits, saw their version released as a single, which reached No. 2 on the Billboards charts and became a gold record. "Somewhere Out There" would win two 1987 Grammy Awards, as Song Of The Year and Best Song Written for a Motion Picture or Television. "Somewhere Out There" was also nominated for a 1986 Oscar as best song, but lost to "Take My Breath Away" from "Top Gun". Mann's other film work includes the scores for I Never Sang for My Father and Muppet Treasure Island, and songs for National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and Oliver and Company.
In 1987, Mann and Weil were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

William E. "Bill" Justis Jr. (October 14, 1926 July 15, 1982) was an American pioneer rock and roll musician, composer, and musical arranger, best known for his 1957 Grammy Hall of Fame song, "Raunchy."
Justis was born in Birmingham, Alabama but grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and studied music at Christian Brothers College (high school department) and Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. A trumpet and saxophone player, while in university he performed with local jazz and dance bands. He returned home to Memphis in 1954 and was eventually taken on by Sam Phillips at Sun Records where he recorded music for himself as well as arranged the music for Sun artists such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Charlie Rich. Released in November 1957, his song "Raunchy" was the first rock and roll instrumental hit, and its popularity was such that it reached #2 on the American Billboard chart and got to #1 on the Australian charts. It reached #11 in the UK Singles Chart.[1] It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[3] Justis had one other significant hit record, "College Man", that went to U.S. #42.
In 1961, Justis moved to Nashville where he became a successful record producer and music arranger for both pop and country music performers at Monument and Mercury Records and other labels. He played saxophone on the soundtrack for the 1964 Elvis Presley film, Kissin' Cousins and that same year took over as manager of the singing group, Ronny & the Daytonas.
Justis had a number one hit in Australia in 1963 with "Tamoure". The song did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. In the early 1960s he produced a successful series of instrumental albums on the Smash label (Alley Cat/Green Onions and Telstar/The Lonely Bull). Justis was credited by Ray Stevens in the TNN special, The Life and Times of Ray Stevens, for giving him the phrase "gitarzan", which became a million selling hit for Stevens in 1969.
Justis also wrote the music for several Hollywood films including the Smokey and the Bandit and Hooper.
Justis died of cancer in Nashville in 1982, at the age of 55, and was interred in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis.
