Met Aswoensdag begon een 40-daagse vasten periode die tot Pasen voortduurde. Vooraf gaande werd 3 dagen feest gevierd, wat wij nu nog kennen als carnaval. Tegenwoordig gaat de vastenperiode in de katholieke gemeenschap vanaf de 6e zondag van start, maar is ook niet meer zo streng van leer als in het verleden. Het echte vasten is nu teruggebracht tot één dag (Goede Vrijdag). Vasten is de voorbereiding op inwijdingen, boetedoeningen en teken van rouw. In de Rooms Katholieke gemeenschap bezinning vooraf gaande aan Pasen. Alleen in de Islamitische gemeenschap wordt het langdurig vasten met de Ramadan nog in ere gehouden.
