Boeren, Burgers en Buitenlui !...Ja, zo begint een Engelse 'town crier', een Vlaamse 'belleman' of een Nederlandse 'stadsomroeper' zijn betoog. U krijgt hier een overzicht van de herkomst van deze beroepsactiviteit, met een blik in het verleden en hoe het op de dag van vandaag nog steeds, zij het nu eerder als hobby of toeristische attractie, in ere wordt gehouden.
Hier kunnen jullie dan ook mijn reilen en zeilen als de Izegemse stadsomroeper volgen, vanaf het begin (met de opening van de Izegemse Centrale Doortocht in 2004)tot op heden. De nieuwste berichten staan telkens bovenaan.

Massale belangstelling voor Kinderkankerdag in Planckendael Zondag 5 Oktober 2008
De 15de Nationale Kinderkankerdag die zondag in het Mechelse dierenpark Planckendael wordt gehouden, is een ongezien succes. Dat zegt organisator Karel Verbist. Er zijn meer dan duizend aanwezigen, waaronder 525 jonge kankerpatiënten.
Ze mogen een hele dag in het park rondlopen en er is ook animatie voorzien. Omdat sommige kinderen erg ziek zijn, wordt ter plaatste niets aan het toeval overgelaten. Er staan medische teams stand-by en alle nodige medicatie is aanwezig, mocht zich een noodgeval voordoen. Tweehonderd medewerkers waren zaterdag en zondag in de weer om van het evenement een succes te maken. De bedoeling van de Kinderkankerdag, die wordt georganiseerd door de Stichting tegen Kanker, is kinderen met ernstige medische aandoeningen een dag in het zonnetje te zetten en hen hun kanker te doen vergeten.
Vanuit alle hoeken komt er steun voor het initiatief.
Zo gaan alle kinderen op de foto op een motor van de Mechelse motorbrigade, en op het einde van de dag krijgen alle kinderen een pakket met verantwoord snoepgoed en speelgoed mee naar huis.
Er worden ook huifkarren ingezet die heel Planckendael rondrijden, zodat de minder mobiele aanwezigen ook een leuke dag kunnen beleven. Met de opkomst van zondag heeft de Kinderkankerdag zijn maximumcapaciteit bereikt.
On Saturday, September 17 the good Lord blessed us with a great day at the Niagara Wine and Grape Festival in St. Catharines. Under the leadership of Host Crier Mark Molnar, we lead a fantastic parade through an outstanding and extremely appreciative crowd with seven Criers and one super escort in attendanceÂ… yesÂ… Liz McKee !
Criers in attendance were: Mark Molnar, Bill McKee, David McKee, Derrick Tidd, Tony Vandermaas, Bruce Kruger and the newest member of the Guild, Ron Meisner, recently appointed Town Crier of Welland. Ron is a retired school teacher and a tremendous addition to the Guild. It was wonderful to meet him and we look forward to many more encounters with his friendship. RonÂ’s alter ego is Santa which he has not only the looks associated to this gentleman but he also has SantaÂ’s great gifted personality. Welcome Ron!
After the parade, we were treated to a super reception at the VIP HQ hosted by the Mayor of St. Catharines who was very hospitable. The wine and tidbits were great. All of the Criers in attendance wish to extend their most sincere gratitude to Mark for his wonderful oversight for this event.

De heemkundige kring is er voor iedereen die belangstelling heeft voor de lokale geschiedenis van Ruddervoorde en haar bewoners.
We willen in de eerste plaats alle geïnteresseerden in de geschiedenis van onze gemeente samenbrengen en hen ondersteunen in hun opzoekingswerk. We doen dit o.a. door historisch materiaal op te zoeken, te bewaren, te beschermen, te ontsluiten en ter beschikking te stellen.
Het documentatiecentrum is te raadplegen in de plaatselijke bibliotheek van Ruddervoorde (Sportstraat 2) iedere laatste zaterdag van de maand.
Stadsomroepersconcours Zandvoort 27 september 2008
Het omroepersconcours waarvan de gemeente Zandvoort hoofdsponsor is, werd voor de 10e keer in Zandvoort gehouden. Er werd gestreden om het kampioenschap van Noord Holland.
Het programma van het 7e concours van 2008, dat ook meetelt voor het Nederlands Kampioenschap, zag er als volgt uit :

Officiële ontvangst op het Gemeentehuis door dhr Niek Meijer, burgemeester van Zandvoort.
13.30u
Op het kerkplein voor de Protestantse kerk doen de omroepers hun 1e, verplichte roep. Deze gaat over Zandvoort en de hun toegewezen sponsor.
14.15u
Optreden van het Gemengd Zandvoorts Koper Ensemble.
14.45u
De omroepers doen hun 2e, vrije roep. Deze gaat meestal over hun eigen woonplaats.
15.30u
Optreden van het Gemengd Zandvoorts Koper Ensemble.
16.00u
Prijsuitreiking en sluiting.
De jury bestond uit: - burgemeester Niek Meijer (voorzitter) - Astrid v/d Veld (rijschoolhoudster) en - Marcel Meijer (Zandvoorter van 2007).
De 13 deelnemers waren :

De presentatie van dit concours nam Wim De Smit voor zijn rekening, gezien Fred Martens, de stadsomroeper van Blokzijl, belet was.
N.B. Bij slecht weer zou het concours plaatsvinden in de Protestantse kerk aan het kerkplein, maar gelukkig was er de stralende zon.
Een kleurrijke man, maar dan in figuurlijke zin, zijn outfit was zwart wit. Ook de enige vrouwelijke deelnemer deed het goed, maar enige oefening lijkt nog wel op haar plaats.
Uiteindelijk werden de eerste drie plekken door de jury toegekend aan : 1e/ Henk v/d Nieuwenhuizen (Oisterwijk), 2e/ Klaas Koper (Zandvoort) en 3e/ Henk Bijlsma (Bolsward).
Alles zat mee deze zaterdag: windstil, zonnig weer, volle terrassen en veel publiek.
De pauzes werden opgevuld door het Zandvoortse Koper Ensemble, een mooie opmaat voor de zondag, wanneer het Shanty-liederenfestival wordt gehouden. Zandvoortphoto deed de deelnemers allen een groepsfoto cadeau.
Voor de tweede maal op rij mocht ik het onthaal verzorgen van dit evenement en thevens de scetches aan elkaar breien door na de pauze de mensen opnieuw naar hun stoel te 'bellen'...

Geert De Wael doolt rond in de wereld en stoot op dingen die hij niet goed snapt : - Hoeveel hoeken kan iemand kwijt zijn? - Wat is er waar aan vooroordelen en geldt dat ook voor Azerbeidzjan? - Hoe moet het nu verder met de verborgen kangoeroes? - Is de dood van een boom belangrijk en is liefde wel simpel? Zijn antwoorden zijn even absurd als eerlijk. U kan maar beter klaar zijn voor de toekomst.
Geert De Wael speelt al 10 jaar succesvol improvisatietheater in België en Nederland, vooraleer hij zelf de stap zet naar cabaret. On the road zag hij verschillende stand-uppers en cabaretiers. ‘Ik kan dat ook’ was een besef dat zich steeds meer van hem meester maakte. Het ene moment zijt ge een jongen. Het volgend moment steekt ge uw leven in kartonnen dozen en verhuist ge naar een nieuwe realiteit. Dan zijt ge opeens een man. Met 300 maandelijkse afbetalingen, een stapel bakstenen op uw naam, altijd vijzen in uw achterzak en vooral: veel keuzes en twijfels. Over condensatieketels en mazout, over 15 of 20 centimeter isolatie. Over kinderen, over volwassen worden, over rock 'n roll en over een rustig leven.
In 2005 won Henk Rijckaert publieks- en persoonlijkheidsprijs op Humorologie. In 2006 stond hij in de finale van Camaretten, de prestigieuze Nederlandse caberetwedstrijd. In 2007 kocht hij een huis. In 2008 brengt hij dat huis naar uw theaterzaal.
Henk Rijckaert grijpt zijn publiek met hoge grapdichtheid, rake observaties en sprekende mimiek. Hij sleept als meesterlijk verhalenverteller iedereen mee in zijn eigen, ietwat absurde realiteit. Vorig seizoen nog uitstekend onthaald met zijn eerste avondvullende voorstelling Loebas en in het voorprogramma van Wim Helsen, vanaf dit seizoen met zijn tweede programma op het podium.
Piet De Praitere is ne kluchtigoard ut 't Gentse.
Oafweg de joarn 90 kwam De Praitere bekend mè Studio Kafka, e radioprogramma op Studio Brussel, mè Kamagurka. Een bekend typeken van 'em is "Etienne met het open verhemelte" uut Vormezêle.
Piet De Praitere won in 1994 de voorloper van alle stand-up comedy wedstrijden : 'De Groote Prijs W.P. Stutjes'.
Dit leidde tot drie radioseizoenen anarchistisch jolijt in het populaire 'Studio Kafka' onder leiding van Kamagurka.
Na een 40-tal optredens bij de succesvolle 'Kamiel Kafka Worldtour 1995' werkte hij in 1996 mee als schrijver, performer en acteur aan het tragikomische programma 'Wees blij met wat je hebt', dat te zien was op de Nederlandse televisiezender VPRO.
Vanaf dan gaat hij in de hoedanigheid van 'Etienne met het open verhemelte' solo met de avondvullende stand-up comedy programma's 'Moderne wiskunde live!' (1996 - '97), 'De Prins der meligheid' (1998 - '99) en '100% geconcentreerd' (2000 - 2002).
Tussendoor konden we hem aan het werk zien als presentator van Humo's rock rally en Humo's comedy cup.
Saturday afternoon I was in Bruges and saw the Town crier on the market place. THIS IS NOT THE REAL TOWN CRIER, this man playing for the tourists this game.
They carry a handbell to attract people's attention, as they shout the words "Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!" before making their announcements.
The word "Oyez" means "hear ye," which is a call for silence and attention. Oyez derives from the Anglo-Norman word for listen.
Town criers were the chief means of news communication with the people of the town since many could not read or write. Royal proclamations, local bylaws, market days, adverts, even selling loaves of sugar were all proclaimed by a bellman or crier throughout the centuries His fees included one (old) penny for 'going for anything that is lost' and 4d for leading the funeral procession.

Sunday 6th September 2008
The Town Criers Competition and Street Organ Festival takes place the first Saturday in September.
Over the last few years this event has grown in stature, colour and sound. Street Organ Grinders from all over the country are invited into Banbury to help collect money for a local worthy cause. The melodious sounds from their Street Organs can be heard around all corners of the town and their traditional Victorian type costumes bring a splash of colour to the town.
As if not to be outdone around 26 Town Criers from the far corners of Great Britain and a few from overseas also take up stance in the town to cry about their own towns and a previously agreed given subject. Their magnificent flamboyant costumes – many accompanied by co-ordinated escorts – vie for attention from the crowds. Their cries are fairly judged by a panel made up of knowledgeable dignitaries.
At the end of the day the two groups meet up for a Banbury Cake tea with the Town Mayor in the Town Hall to swap stories of the day and to catch up with friends old and new.
Ter gelegenheid van de opening van de Waregem Koerse Feesten 2008 werd Jacques Coorevits in het stadhuis officieel de erepenning als lid van de Gilde Bellemannen Europees Continent door burgemeester Kurt Vanryckeghem opgespeld.
De bakermat van de bellemannen is in Groot-Brittanië gelegen. Een belleman is niet zomaar een persoon die ergens rondloopt en wat uitroept. Zijn voornaamste taak is een ambassadeur te zijn van zijn stad en dat zowel op toeristisch als cultureel vlak.
Tijdens zijn optreden, zowel in het binnen- als buitenland kan hij met zijn luide klare stem zijn stad meer bekendheid geven.
Steffen Ron schreef nog speciaal een lied 'Bel, bel, belleman ... bel !' om het heugelijk feit kracht bij te zetten.
'God Save The Queen' aan banden gelegd in Hastings !
Grote consternatie onder de Engelse 'towncriers'. Er was onlangs een moordzaak in Hastings die nogal wat stof deed opwaaien in de regio. Jon Bartholomew, de 'belleman van Hastings, ging zoals het hoort, samen met tal van hoogwaardigheidsbekleders, een herdenkingsoptocht voor ter ere van de overledene en zou nadien een speech afsteken. Tot zijn grote verwondering werd hem aanbevolen zijn relaas niet te beindigen met het gebruikelijke "God save the Queen" maar met "IT UPSETS SOME PEOPLE!"

I have today received an email from a most distressed Jon Bartholomew, Town Crier of Hastings, in which he asks for our support.
As you know, there was an untimely death in Hastings last week, which is not yet being classed as a murder. However, Jon informs me that Hastings has had very bad press over the matter, and, to try to offset that bad press, Jon is leading a parade of Civic dignitaries through the town tomorrow (Monday) morning, when at 11am a two-minute silence for the deceased person will be held.
Here is the rub:
JON HAS BEEN TOLD NOT TO SAY "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN" at the end in case "IT UPSETS SOME PEOPLE!"
What a disgrace!
Jon has asked me to point this out to the membership, and I feel an email from each member to Jon registering our support for him would not go amiss.
Come on folks, let's show Jon we are behind him 100%

What a liberty, we must make a stand against this we must not cowtow to those who might feel we could upset or offend them, We have traditions in our profession and these cannot be dismissed on grounds we could offend or upset. I am only sorry I cannot go as I would cry GOD SAVE THE QUEEN and be dammend. Is the next thing for Hastings going to be dont mention the Battle of Hastings for fear of upsetting someone. I was in Birmingham yesterday for a function which was attended by people from all cultures and not one person was offended when I finished the cry with the customary God Save the Queen.

I have previously cried at Hastings and whilst not recently due to family commitments (kids getting older and not left home yet); I had every intention to do so again. With an attitude thus I sincerly hope that this would not apply to the championship? I look forwards from the AHGTC response for a new line...... God Save the Council of Hastings?

When the day comes that God Save The Queen (or King) is changed as a national anthem then we as Town Criers may have to amend the current conclusion to our proclamations for it may mean the monarchy has ended.
Until then what else can one say to prevent the erosion to our culture other than, that's right, GOD SAVE THE QUEEN.
Dear Jon Local computer difficulties prevented my writing to you sooner. Along with all the other criers, you have my full support and I am glad the matter has been resolved. It is probably worth noting that the police, who have investigated this terrible occurrence, as well as the armed forces and Members of Parliament also enjoy allegiance to the crown and, therefore, the whole of the United Kingdom (another clue in that title, too!!!). I am overwhelmed by your quick response and underlying support. As a background to today's events, it was not known until 10:30 hours that His Excellency the Ambassador of Quatar was attending Hastings with the family of Mohammed Al - Majed who was the unfortunate recipient of last weekends violence and who subsequently died. As I suggested in my letter to you all, much media, both in the press and the television, have suggested that Hastings is a bad place to live, breathe or even execute ones duty. At the 11th hour this morning, after much consultation with media representatives of the council who were, I suggest, being manipulated by higher beings in local and central Government, I put our case forward and stressed that in no uncertain terms I would not complete this ceremony without the closing "God Save the Queen."
In light of your support and that of the people of Hastings, the cry was delivered in the presence and hearing of the Right Worshipful Mayor (who supports us 100%), his Excellency the Ambassador and the father of the deceased and was greeted with the reverence and thanks that it necessarily deserved. I therefore say this matter, albeit unpleasant, has now been closed and in support of all your comments, we will not and should not be dictated to by Council or any others that feel our office can be manipulated to serve a purpose.
Once again, I thank you all for your support. It has opened certain eyes to the fact that whatever the situation within this realm, we cannot and will not be dictated to as the Monarchs Messenger and Servants of the Crown.

"Good A-Morning Ottawa!" were the first words out of Perth Town Crier Brent McLarenÂ’s mouth as his bell and booming voice opened ATVÂ’s Morning Show for the Ottawa area on Friday, August 22nd.
For Brent and his wife, Shelley, it had been another in a series of early morning activities that saw them rising long before the sun had come up over the heritage town of Perth. During the three hours of live television broadcast the Perth Crier was featured many times.
Perth is reknowned as one of Canada’s prettiest towns and the historic buildings and modern inn seemed to be at their best for the visit. The arrival of A-Morning was just one more opportunity to show off the community and Perth, as usual, rose to the occasion. It was the morning to unveil the new display in tribute of the “Mammoth Cheese” and to speak about the town’s history as well as the plans for the future. Whether it was Susan Code explaining the story of the Last Fatal Duel to Kurt Stoodley, the Voyageur Canoe group taking Angie Poirier around the Basin, or Karen Soloman learning about the wonderful cuisine the Fall River Pub & Grill, the three hours flew by and every viewer spoke about how good the show was.
One of the highlights of the morning was actually teaching ATVÂ’s Angie Poirier a little bit of the gentle Art of Town Crying. If Richmond Ontario is looking for a crier, we have just found one for them. She can ring the bell with the best of them, looks great in the hat, and the voice Â… letÂ’s put it this way Â… no one, even those on the other side of the Tay Basin, missed a single word!
Hobby's durven wel eens een paar tientallen jaren in een familie blijven hangen. Daar is eigenlijk niks bijzonders aan, maar dat drie generaties samen spelen in een musicalproductie is toch eerder uitzondering dan regel. Bij de familie Van de Putte uit Mariakerke kijken ze hier echter al niet meer van op.
Vandaag maandag wordt heel Wervik zot want dan komt “The Voice of Europe”, Eddy Wally, live met The Johnny’s Band het Sint-Maartensplein in vuur en vlam steken.
Samen met de stadsomroeper van Kemmel, Leon Delabie, en de eredames van de Tabaksfee 2008, werd ik ingezet om de reuzen van Wervik te escorteren vanaf de Sint Medarduskerk tot aan de Grote Markt, alwaar de huwelijksbeloftes van het reuzenpaar Jan Buuk en Marie Spillaert werden hernieuwd, dit in aanwezigheid van hun reuzenkinderen.
Maar eerst op de foto met de eerste eredame Elien en tweede eredame Lindsey van de Wervikse Tabakfee-verkiezing 2008.
De ganse ceremonie verliep in de striemende regen en ondanks het slechte weer kwam er toch een massa belangstellenden opdagen die dit gebeuren van dichtbij wilden meemaken.
Leon en ikzelf deden in aanwezigheid van nog enkele 'officials' afwisselend de ludieke voorstelling van de reuzen waarna de Schepen Stephane Vansteenkiste namens het stadsbestuur het officiële gedeelte voor zijn rekening nam.
Achteraf werd er een goeie op gedronken.
Ik ontmoette er ook Myriam Delaere, onze enige Westvlaamse deelneemster aan de Miss Belgian Beauty 2009 finale.

Myriam Delaere (20) uit de Waterstraat in Lauwe komt uit een gezin van zeven en moet op de Miss Belgian Beauty-verkiezing als enige de West-Vlaamse eer verdedigen. 'Geen concurrentie dus, maar de druk om goed te presteren is groot.' De Lauwse kandidate zit in het eerste jaar lerarenopleiding aan de Artevelde Hogeschool in Gent. 'Tot vorig jaar volgde ik de richting humane wetenschappen aan het Sint-Aloysiuscollege in Menen, net als Miss België Annelien Coorevits. Ze zat wel een paar jaar voor mij, maar we hebben elkaar beter leren kennen toen we samen strafstudie hadden. Maar nu is zij mijn grote voorbeeld.' Myriam nam nog nooit deel aan missverkiezingen. 'Wel haalde ik eens de halve finale van de modellenwedstrijd Elite Model 2007.' Turnster Aagje Vanwalleghem is haar Miss-meter. Aan troeven om het in de verkiezing ver te brengen, ontbreekt het Myriam niet: 'Ik spreek goed Frans, ben spontaan, ambitieus, sociaal en zelfverzekerd.' En dat zijn (naast een mooie body - en die heeft ze ook al) allemaal zaken die je voor een missverkiezing nodig hebt ! Jazeker !
Barnoldswick's town crier really has something to shout about.
That's because Eliza Mowe, 34, has made history by becoming the first woman to win the European Town Crier Championships.
The competition, held in Almelo, Holland, saw 45 town criers from all over Europe compete over two days.
It is often thought town crying is a typically British tradition, but Eliza explained: "Town crying comes from when people couldn't read and the criers would shout out the news. People couldn't read all over the world, so there were town criers all over the world."
Competing in Holland were criers from Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Eliza said she was overwhelmed to have won. "I couldn't believe it because there were other criers that I thought would walk away with it. I went for the experience and to meet up with friends, I wasn't expecting to win. It's just absolutely wonderful."
Eliza said the victory was all the more special because she was the first woman to walk away with the title.

"Winning was brilliant and to be the first female to win was just wonderful and something that will never be taken away from Barnoldswick. It's a brilliant accolade to bring home," she said.
The victory was widely reported in the Netherlands, with national newspaper, television and radio coverage.
The competition consisted of three cries over two days. The first was a home cry between 75 and 100 words long and was performed on a barge. For the second cry, contestants were given the theme of alternative energy. The final cry was on the theme of twin towns.
Eliza said: "Barnoldswick hasn't got a twin town, so I did a cry advertising for one. Crying is a brilliant way to spread the word about Barnoldswick."
The criers were awarded points for a number of factors including accuracy, volume and clarity.
Barnoldswick town councillor David Whipp said: "Eliza should be the toast of the town, she's done Barnoldswick proud."
Eliza, whose day job is teaching maths, was thrust into the world of town crying five years ago.
"I knew nothing about it before, but I've made lots of friends," she said.
When Eliza became Barnoldswick's town crier at the age of 29, she was the world's youngest female crier. She now lives in Calverley, near Leeds, but says she goes back to Barnoldswick in a flash if she is asked to do something.
