Guy Vandendriessche Oyez ! Oyez ! Oyez ! Aandacht ! Aandacht !

TOWN CRIER COMPETITIONS
Town Crier competitions are held in various towns throughout the year. The aim of the competitions is for Town Criers to visit other towns and be ambassadors for their own towns
The first cry is always a ‘Home Town Cry’, which gives Criers the opportunity to tell the audience about all the good things of their home town and why they should visit.
The second Cry today is about a local subject—the Cotswold Lion sheep and its connection with St Mary’s Church. It is up to each Crier to research and prepare the Cry.
The Cries are judged on two disciplines: Diction and Inflection: The cry must be clear, crisp and understandable. It should be free from slurred words and excessive voice affectations. There should be a natural rise and fall in the inflection to emphasise the important points. Well placed pauses or breaths help the flow of the cry and thus clarify its meaning. Sustained Volume & Clarity: The Crier should maintain the same tempo and speed for the duration of the cry. Consistency of volume must be maintained throughout the cry, except where fluctuations have been purposely used for the emphasis or style.
There is also a Best Dressed competition , which is separated into: - Best Dressed Crier, - Best Dressed Couple, - Best Dressed Escort.

Oh yea, we'll keep tradition alive
THERE was plenty to shout about at the Fairford Town Crier Competition.
More than 20 colourfully dressed heralds flocked to the event from across the country for the national contest.
Donning traditional garb with distinctive tricorn hats, robes, breeches and black boots, entrants cut a dash as they marched through the town, swinging hand bells as they went.
Dozens of people lined the streets to witness the spectacle and to listen to the cries.
Organiser Maurice Jones, who has been Fairford's town crier for the past 35 years, said: "It was a very good day. This was the first time we've held the event in 10 years so it was quite special.
"Lots of people came along to have a look and the standard of town crying was exceptional. The judges said it was too close to call. We had a drop of rain but it didn't affect people's spirits."
Entrants had two attempts to impress a panel of judges, who were looking for high-quality diction, clarity of speech, volume and inflection.
In their first lung-bursting effort they were asked to cry about their hometown, starting in the traditional way with "Oyez, oyez, oyez" and ending with the words "God save the Queen".
Then, in round two, their subject was the Cotswold Lion – more commonly known as the sheep – and its importance to the region's wool manufacturing trade.
Ken Brightwell, Cheltenham's town crier since 1991, said: "It was a fantastic occasion.
"There was a lively atmosphere and the outfits looked great. No two were the same."
Entrants took part in a parade through the town's Market Place and gathered in between bouts to have a roast beef lunch.
An Irish band was on hand to provide musical entertainment and there was a chance for youngsters to exercise their vocal chords in the Young Town Crier contest.
Prizes were given to the best vocalist and best-dressed town crier, although none of Gloucestershire's entrants stepped on to the rostrum this time.
Ken added: "It was just great to play a part. It's about keeping alive a tradition which has been going for centuries.
"Before newspapers there were town criers. And although it's quite a rare art nowadays, it's wonderful to see them still in action."
