Sean Connery
Sir Thomas Sean Connery(Edinburgh, 25 augustus 1930) is een Schots acteur.
Biografie
Sean Connery werd geboren in een arm gezin in Edinburgh. Op zijn dertiende verlaat hij de schoolbanken om melkboer te worden en drie jaar later ging hij bij de marine. Daar werd hij op zijn achttiende afgekeurd vanwege een zweer. Hij werd hierna een vrachtwagenchauffeur.
Connery deed mee aan bodybuildingwedstrijden en werd in 1953 derde in een Mr. Universe-verkiezing.
James Bond
Sean Connery is in eerste instantie bekend geworden door zijn rol als James Bond. Via de lezers van een Londense krant wordt hij verkozen de rol van Ian Flemings James Bond te vertolken in Dr. No (1962). Naast deze eerste James Bond-film, speelde Connery in de volgende Bond-films:
- Diamonds Are Forever (1971)
- You Only Live Twice (1967)
- Thunderball (1965)
- Goldfinger (1964)
- From Russia With Love (1963)
Ook speelde hij in de niet-officiële Bondfilm Never Say Never Again (1983). En heeft ook toestemming gegeven om zijn stem te mogen te gebruiken in de game James Bond 007: From Russia With Love.
Na James Bond
Hij is misschien wel de enige acteur die succesvol van het James Bond-imago is afgekomen, in tegenstelling tot Roger Moore. Voor velen is en blijft hij echter de enige, échte 007. Naast zijn Bond-reeks, speelde Connery in veel andere grote speelfilms. Er waren sterke geruchten dat hij weer de vader van Indiana Jones zou gaan spelen in de nieuwe Indiana Jones 4 (2008), maar hij heeft onlangs te kennen gegeven het definitief niet te doen.
Onderscheidingen
In 1988 ontving Connery een oscar voor zijn rol van Jimmy Malone in The Untouchables. Daarnaast begon hij in de jaren negentig met het produceren van films.
Hoewel hij niet meer in Schotland woonde, was Sean Connery actief in de Scottish National Party, die streefde naar meer autonomie voor Schotland. In 1999 werd Connery, ondanks zijn Schots nationalisme, tot ridder geslagen door de Britse koningin Elizabeth II, en mocht zich voortaan "sir" Sean noemen.
In juni 2006 ontving Connery de prestigieuze AFI Achievement Award, enkele maanden nadat hij had aangekondigd met pensioen te gaan.
