'The Wolverine' speelt zich af na 'X-Men: The Last Stand'

Onder meer op basis van de "after credit scene", die zich afspeelt in Japan, van X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) leek het erop dat de opvolger The Wolverine een prequel zou worden op de eerdere X-Men trilogie. In een interview met Empire liet regisseur James Mangold (Knight and Day, 2010) weten dat het geen prequel is, maar juist een sequel op de trilogie: "Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all. Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for him."

Overigens verschijnen er wel flashback in The Wolverine, bijvoorbeeld over de Tweede Wereldoorlog: "That’s something that for me was very important, that I land in a very specific place in his timeline. I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it. The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan. For me that’s such an interesting part of Logan’s character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie."

Volgens Mangold hoeven we geen actiefilm te verwachten. Het wordt namelijk een "Japanese noir picture with tentpole action in it", aldus Mangold.

De opnames voor The Wolverine zijn onder tussen in volle gang en het moet op 26 juli 2013 in première gaan. Hoofdrollen zijn voor Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Sventlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi en Brian Tee. Hieronder ook een nieuwe foto uit de film, waarin we Wolverine zien met zijn "bone claws". Duidelijk een shot uit een van de flashbacks.
