    Wordt 'Driven' de sequel op Drive?

    In december berichtten we jullie dat er een vervolg op Nicolas Winding Refns Drive zou komen in de vorm van een boek, Driven genaamd. Deze ligt inmiddels al een paar maanden in de winkels en schrijver John Sallis ging er onlangs een stukje dieper op in. Hierbij heeft hij het over het nieuwe boek maar ook over een eventuele nieuwe film.

    De sequel vindt zeven jaar na Drive plaats en de Driver heeft zijn oude leventje achter zich gelaten. Hij is inmiddels een zakenman en is zelfs verloofd. Maar dan komt zijn verleden hem achterna en worden hij en zijn geliefde aangevallen. Over de mentaliteit van de Driver zegt Sallis het volgende:

    “He is trying to suppress the violence – but the sequel shows the process of him accepting that this is who he is. He tries to become a normal person and re-invents himself. After his fiancée is killed, the violence is unleashed again.”

    Sallis gaat verder in op de manier waarop Ryan Gosling de Driver heeft neergezet in de eerste film.

    “It was difficult not to visualise Ryan Gosling playing the role when I wrote the sequel. I think he really made the character his own. Of course, they made changes in the script – but it has the blood, heart and guts of the book – it feels like my film.”

    Over het personage zelf zegt de schrijver het volgende:

    “He is someone who doesn’t really have much personality. You never really know him or his motives, however much backstory I give. In the film, Ryan Gosling’s long looks with no expression on his face sums this state up perfectly.”

    Refn heeft eerder al eens aangegeven dat hij er ooit misschien wel eens voor zou openstaan om een sequel te maken. Daar komt nog eens bij dat hij en Gosling graag met elkaar werken. Misschien dat ze na Only God Forgives eens over een verfilming van Driven kunnen nadenken.
