The Lady vertelt het verhaal van de activiste Aung San Suu Kyi en haar man Michael Aris, een liefdesverhaal over opoffering, toewijding en keuzes in de strijd voor democratie. Aung San Suu Kyi beslist om Engeland achter zich te laten en naar Myanmar terug te keren om voor haar zieke moeder te zorgen. Ze beslist te blijven en ze ontwikkelt zich tot oppositieleidster van de regering. Uiteindelijk komt ze voor de hartverscheurende keuze te staan: kiezen voor haar land of voor haar familie.
