plants start growing and everything is blossoming around us
Giving the toddlers a lot of impressions (which we did by telling a story Toon Telleghen Lente, going for a walk in the street and looking at the gardens, taking a closer look at trees, blossom, flowers, flower bulbs, seeds, ) is essential before going to work.
Together with my mentor the children:
-decorated the spring table and researched the materials
-are sowing and growing chives
-are making paper flowers with folding techniques
Spring seasonal table
the wonder of new life in the classroom
mainly decorated and collected by the children
With the access materials the children made a garden store in the hallway.
This way interaction can develop, and thereby roleplay; between the house-corner, the spring seasonal table and the store.
Garden store
The children:
-thought about and decorated the store
-looked for materials in the school, at home
-selected and made groups of buttons as currency
-started roleplaying in the store
-made price tags
-counted money
-
and so they are developing all the time: integrating a wide variety of knowledge, practising a lot of skills, developing socially and emotionally
As a teacher
Stimulating a rich environment in which keywords for you, as a guide, are:
-motivate
-stimulate
-enable
-model behaviour
To me these are the most important in guiding roleplay.
A rich environment however doesnt have to be rich in the sense that you provide them with a high-tech playskool cash register. For example: some boxes, paper and creativity enrich the children a lot more
They designed and created their own cash register to put in the store.
(The boy in the picture also designed a logo for the store to put on the planbord.)
And they are planning to:
-make more paper flowers to sell in the store
-work together with others on projects
-bring materials from home
-buy presents for their friends, parents in the store
-
And along the way they are again:
-learning about behaviour when going to the store
-developing social skills
-handling money, estimating, making groups
-measuring
-creating
-practising
-
Another important aspect afterwards is to discuss and/or show the roleplay in the circle with all the children. I think using the axes is a good method to do this and it already gives toddlers insight in their own and other peoples actions, behaviour and feelings.
