The visit to the School on Wheels was certainly worth it. This organisation provides schools for circus- and fairground-children. We met the headmaster and some very passionate teachers. Getting to know and love the children, their families, surroundings and lifestyle is only the first step they took to bring education to a specific target public. ICT is one of the means to educate and follow their students. Most of the time however they travel across the country in vans and busses. Bringing the schools to the heart of the circus or fairground.
The teachers have to be involved, because they are put to the test, having to differentiate for a very diverse group. Children of all ages come to the school busses. These provide all the materials a normal class has and can be separated into different rooms. From computers with internet, printers and individual handbooks for each pupil or group; to paint and puppets, building blocks and dress-up-clothes, a lot of metres of electric cable, a vacuum cleaner, sink and bathroom.; the busses have it all. The extendable sides make for a large working area. Its really unbelievable what fits in here!
Its obvious these teachers are bit by the travellers bug themselves. It must be wonderful to be in different surroundings every week or sometimes every day. But that also means you have to be flexible. The teachers talk with such respect about the circus and fairground people. Both are very different worlds.
The circus travellers are incredibly hard workers. The teachers talk about the circus, they explain how it is one big family, working towards a common goal. The children often have similar experiences. Art and beauty have an important place in the circus and children participate in this life from a very early age. One teacher is living with them during the week. She travels across the country with her camper and enjoys this life very much. She really got to know the children and their way of life very well and she says her work is challenging her every day. Its a special world and you have to earn the families respect to really become part of it. You also have to be a versatile teacher: getting the electrics functioning, setting up and packing the busses every visit, adapt the classrooms to the needs of the group, etc.. Every day has its own surprises.
The fairground people are the second group the School of Wheels caters for. This life is similar to the circus life, yet the atmosphere is very different. They are merchants, competing each other for customers, because if the people go next door, you are not making money. With the children, the competitive spirit comes into the classroom, so it is very real in their life. They also dont know each other that well as the pupils from the circus. This makes for an interesting, very different surrounding for teaching. Each child bring a variety of experiences to the table.
The School on Wheels has been educating children across the land for 50 years now. You can tell just by looking at some pictures of the very first school busses. They look like romantic gypsy carts, it must have been wonderful Now the equipment has been completely modernised off course. Just recently some new busses were added. Interesting for me, some of the older models have been sold to Belgium. We have a similar organisation! Im sure I will look into that in the future. I can but have a lot of respect for these people their work and feel attracted to the lifestyle and diversity. So in conclusion, I am very happy to have experienced this.
Op 11 maart liep ik stage bij juf Paula, die normaal op maandag en vrijdag de klas heeft. Ook zij gaf mij feedback over mijn activiteiten, maar vond dat niet altijd gemakkelijk. Ze vertelde me dat het, na enkele jaren uit het onderwijs te zijn geweest, niet altijd gemakkelijk is en ze weer elke dag bijleert. We hadden een interessant gesprek over hoe alles loopt in de klas en blijkbaar is ook zij zich ook echt aan het oefenen in de manier waarop juf Gerry met de kinderen omgaat en activiteiten opstelt. Ik merkte dat de kleuters inderdaad iets drukker waren, ze zegt zelf dat ze het daar soms nog moeilijk mee heeft. Het is fijn om te horen dat de leerkrachten hier echt actief van elkaar leren en dat zelfkennis en openheid hierbij belangrijk zijn en elkaar helpen essentieel.
Het was leuk om de flessendrum activiteit onder haar begeleiding op te starten. Je merkt dat ze heel muzikaal is, bijna alles wordt een lied en gebeurt heel speels. Zij ging dan ook op vrijdag verder met de flessendrum door het toevoegen van twee flessen en het stimuleren van het noteren en componeren. Juf Gerry en juf Paula (h)erkennen elkaars talenten en daarom hebben ze ervoor gekozen de nadruk bij juf Paula iets meer op godsdienst en muziek te leggen; bij juf Gerry ligt die meer op taal en wiskunde, zij geeft ook de bewegingslessen op dinsdag.
Elke daarop volgende stagedag heb ik met juf Gerry uitgebreid nagepraat. De gesprekken waren telkens heel waardevol. We hadden het over de activiteiten, de interactie met de kleuters, hun initiatieven, onze observaties, maar ook over verschillende onderwijssystemen, juf Gerrys ervaringen doorheen de jaren, diverse methodes. Ik voel me nog steeds in mijn nopjes op deze school, heb een heel goed contact met mijn mentor en ik hou echt van deze aanpak met kinderen.
De lessen die ik uit de voorgaande praktijkervaringen getrokken heb, worden enkel nog versterkt. Zo heb ik bvb. nog met mijn mentor gepraat over het sociaal-emotionele klimaat in de klas en het gebruik van de axenroos, waar ik het in mijn vorige verslag ook over had. Ik bekeek artikels die ze zelf schreef en die gepubliceerd zijn, kreeg tips en maakte kopies. Ik voel me groeien in een houding die het toelaat dat de kinderen het helemaal (of toch zoveel mogelijk) zelf doen. Maar er is nog een lange (eindeloze) weg te gaan, want zoals ik al opmerkte, een goede leerkracht blijft levenslang leren. Ik ben heel erg blij dat ik op deze stageplaats terechtgekomen ben, waar het leerpotentieel zo hoog is. Ik hoop maar dat ik nog tijd genoeg heb om alles wat me aanspreekt hier echt te kunnen bestuderen.
