DAVID SCHRIJFT:
We left packed with 4 people (Jerry, Kurt, Peter and myself) and a lot of food, drinks, cloths, boots, and 2 guitars on a saturday morning. In Copenhagen we met up with Juli. First just to ask her advise on a nice place to eat something, but we ended up filling her living room with a bunch of sailors on their mattresses. The next day we continued our car trip to meet with Paul and his gang just in front of the Opera of Göteburg. After the official handovers of the keys an the captains hat (and the official pizza dinner) we left direction Copenhagen the next morning.
First day of sailing and our skills were tested already. First getting out of Göteburg with a map of the complete Kattegat (so no details). Then the wind started to build up, straight form the direction we were heading. So we started crossing the wind for a whole day until we decided at 3 oclock at night to get some rest in a harbor (Varberg). This mainly because not much of the crew was left for sailing. 3 out of 4 where wasted...
After a day of rest in this quite old fortress town we left to Helsingor to meet up with Juli again. This half of the day on engine due to a lack of wind. After a couple of hours the wind started to blow in our back, so Spinakkertime! Because there was not much wind we tried to set a watersail (see pictures) while celebrating Jerrys birthday guided by dolphins.
In Helsingor I met Juli in the train station. She had a big bag full of surprises for Jerrys birthday. So we had a nice celebration in a typically Danish style.
The next morning we left with a bigger crew to Louisiana, the museum of contemporary art of Danmark. They have a harbor just on the back of the museum, an amazing setting! The museum is not only a very nice collection of paintings and sculptures but the museum itself fitted perfectly in the garden who emerged with the bay... A very peaceful inspiring place. A perfect spot to dance, so we did
After visiting the museum we left for Copenhagen. Just cruising with our new crew member on the helm. After a while it started raining. Until now the rain just gave us enough breaks to let the cloths dry in the wind (and even then we were not always able to get the cloths back in time). That evening was the first time we spend a whole night in the boat. Very cosy!
The next morning Juli had a meeting in Cristiania. So we transformed the Laura into a water taxi and sailed to the center of Copenhagen to a harbor in a canal. Then we guided Juli to her meeting in the Freestate of Cristiania. A kind of independent city in the city famous for the selling of marihuana and hashish. But besides that its also a community to give alternative and creative people a spot to do their own thing. Juli her meeting was a preparation for the 100 dancers festival sometime soon in Copenhagen. Worth visit, Im sure! For us it was the prefect opportunity to take a sauna and to see the houses they builded on the riverside. The exposition on modern living in Louisiana museum realized.
That evening there was a Soeffi concert in one of the concert places. Pakistani rhythms supported by a little bearded guy in a traditional paki dress turning himself around until he was more stoned than the people in the pusher street. After the concert we went shopping and drank a thee and a ginger juice.
We left Copenhagen sailing with just enough wind to not use the engine. But that didnt last long. The wind started to build up and we had an interesting battle with the forces of nature. At a certain moment one of the main rigs on the side almost detached because the locking ring had disappeared. By accident I saw the ring was missing and we changed our course so there was no tension anymore on the rig. That gave us a couple of minutes to repair the connection (using pliers and ducktape...). We made it in time to change our course again to make room for one of the cruise ships... Sailing is troubleshooting. The wind always became stronger that day. The construction is tested and approved. At eleven oclock we sailed into the harbor of Rødvig. When the wind is heavy sailors are always very helpful. I dont know if its just to be nice or if they are worried that we will smash their boats, Ill go for the first one!
Today we recover. Tomorrow we continue!
