Een woordje van de organisator :
Greetings from Alaska ! I know some were concerned about our city being involved in the WBMC 2009. One thing I need to make clear is that it is our club that will host the event ,not the city goverment. The city is very concious that all who come enjoy the visit and have pleged there support in providing travel/lodging and other important information to make the stay enjoyable. The railroad is providing a train to take the contestants on a site seeing trip down the Seward Highway. Now thats red carpet treatment ! Go to our web page and see the fishing photos we have posted, but thats not all we have to offer all who come. Wonderfull sites of all types land/wildlife to name a few. Spring temp is in the mid 50's and things really get moving. People have offered to be interpreters at the event to assist in the quick turn around on questions one may have. Make no mistake : we have been conducting beard competition for over 57 years. Folks here in Alaska have a appreciation and deep respect for quality facial hair. I say this because some worry about how the people would be treated here. To all who desire to compete be you in a club or just a individual , all are welcome, because that is the way we do it here-no exceptions. You will not be disapointed this I know. We have been talking to the airlines to find the date which offers our european friends the best chance to travel here at a economical rate. This is the pledge that the Southcentral Alaska Beard & Moustache Club makes to the World. We are waiting for you-our friends and neighbours.

International Beard And Moustache Championships Coming To Anchorage in 2009

Anchorage, Alaska Hundreds of competitors vying to sport the worlds most impressive beards and moustaches will converge on Anchorage in four years. In March 2009, Anchorage will host the International Beard and Moustache Championships (WBMC).
The World Beard and Moustache Association awarded the championships to Anchorage following a bid process and vote of its members, according to association president Bruce Roe of Bremerton, Washington.
Anchorage certainly impressed everyone with a fantastic presentation, said Roe, and it was very challenging for the competition.
Lichtenstein, the only other competing bidder, withdrew after the presentations and ended up rallying behind Anchorage.
There was tremendous support from the Anchorage community to host the WBMC in 2009, Roe says. And many people are excited to come to Alaska because its different and so incredibly beautiful.
The biannual event was held in the United States only once before. That was two years ago in Carson City, Nevada.
Just last month, 243 contestants from 20 different countries competed in the WBMC, held in Berlin, Germany. Home team and perennial powerhouse Germany won the gold in 14 of the 17 categories. The most successful American was Lake Tahoe's Toot Joslin, who resembles the pistol-toting cartoon character, Yosemite Sam. Joslin took top honors in the sideburns category. Twenty-one year-old rookie, Jack Passion, finished third in the highly competitive full beard natural category. Other Americans who placed in several different categories include Jeff Well (third place, Dali) Bruce Roe (third place, Wild West) and Frank Madera (third place, Garibaldi).
Competitors can choose from several different categories. The moustache categories are Natural, English (narrow with long whiskers), Dali (narrow, curved upward), Handle (bushy, upward pointing ends), Wild West (large, bushy whiskers), Fu Manchu (ends long and pointing down), Imperial (whiskers growing from the cheeks, pointing upward) and Freestyle. For those preferring to grow goatees and other partial beards, the categories include Natural, Musketeer (small pointed goatee, separated from the moustache), Sideburns and Freestyle. The full beard category includes Natural, Full Beard, Styled Moustache, Garibaldi (the bottom is round integrated with the moustache), Verdi (bottom part of the beard is short and round; the moustache is prominent) and Freestyle.
This unique, whimsical event is open to everyone willing to support his or her country by sporting a beard or moustache. The Southcentral Alaska Beard & Moustache Club will serve as Anchorages host for the 2009 championships.
Its a big honor, says David Traver, vice president of the Southcentral Alaska Beard & Moustache Club. Weve had a beard competition going on in Anchorage for about 54 years now, and we feel Anchorage is the perfect venue for this event.
Anchorage is no stranger to quirky events, and is certainly familiar with facial hair competitions. For decades, Mr. Fur Face has been one of the highlights of the Miners and Trappers Ball during the winter Fur Rendezvous celebration. The 2009 WBMC is expected to draw big crowds not only locally, but internationally as well.
The next World Beard and Moustache Championships will take place on September 1, 2007, in Brighton, England, with London's Handlebar Club serving as host. Representatives from the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau will attend the championships in London to help promote and generate enthusiasm for the WBMC in Anchorage in 2009.
The Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureaus mission is to attract and serve visitors to the Municipality of Anchorage. ACVBs marketing functions are funded by half of the bed tax collected by the lodging association. The other half goes to the Municipalitys general fund. ACVB receives no state or federal funds. The United States is the world's new facial hair super power, having captured twelve world championship titles out of eighteen categories plus overall at the World Beard and Moustache Championships in Anchorage, Alaska on May 23, 2009. Possessing home field advantage, the USA was able to dethrone Germany which had dominated this competition since its inception.
Hometown favorite and Beard Team USA member David Traver was crowned overall champ, having styled his beard to resemble an Alaska snowshoe which earned him top honors in the freestle full beard category. Meanwhile Germany's Karl-Heinz Hille's elaborate moustache earned him second. San Franciscan Jack Passion placed third with his long, red natural beard.
Nearly 300 competitors from 15 separate countries competed. All of the winners received engraved Alaska gold pans as trophies.
Germany came in second taking first-place honors in five categories. Other countries represented on the podium were England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, and newcomer Canada.
The big winner was also the vice-president of the host organization, the South Central Alaska Beard and Moustache Club, which pulled out all of the stops to make to make the WBMC 2009 the biggest and best ever.

The United States of America is now the world's leading power in international facial hair competitions, having toppled former superpower Germany at the recent World Beard and Moustache Championships held in Anchorage, Alaska.
Further, Beard Team USA accomplished its goals of promoting the worldwide appreciation of beards and moustaches, making the United States competitive in the WBMC, promoting and publicizing the WBMC, facilitating the attendance of members and others at the championships, having fun, and making new friends from our own and other countries.
In all, members of Beard Team USA succeeded in capturing 19 trophies including 10 worldchampions. Other Americans not on BTUSA won as well, but even without them BTUSA would have toppled Germany on its own.
