World Beard and Moustache Championships 2007...
Wow! It was like Pride for the facially furry of the world. A biennial event for beard and moustache wearers all over the planet. I'm pretty sure this was its first time in the UK, and by 'eck it was hirsute heaven.
From mid-morning onwards, Bartholomew Square outside Brighton Town Hall was awash with men with extraordinary facial hair, and their admirers. Yeah ok, and lots of slack-jawed tourists and locals who couldnt believe their eyes.
As well as general hanging about admiring each other, there was a Morris dancing demonstration, which the championships entrants were then encouraged to join in with. All this before the parade even began.
Im guessing about 150 chaps walked through the Lanes to the Brighton Centre where the serious business of judging and awards was to take place late into the evening. There were significant numbers of Germans, Norwegians, Swedish, Americans and of course good old Brits, not to mention some of the hairier local boys whod come out to enjoy the spectacle.
If youve ever though about a beard or tache give it a go, as the old song goes lots of girls love a fella with a bush upon his mush!
Er werd daar door glamour-fotograaf 'SHERI' een selectie gemaakt van snorren en baarden voor Time Magazine. En ik plaatste mijzelf toch wel bij de eerste 2O zeker !

After months of growing and grooming, competitors have the choice of 17 different beard, moustache and goatee categories, from natural to flowing and freestyle. Special prizes are awarded to the youngest contestant, the one who has travelled the furthest to attend, and the people's favourite. Hundreds of hairy contestants from all over the world compete to impress the spectators and a panel of judges.

Sporting a moustache is rarely considered an extreme sport, but things got a little hairy in Brighton this weekend, as thousands of spectators turned up to witness the 9th world beard and moustache championships.
More than 250 contestants from around the world entered the finals in Brighton, the first time the event has been held in the UK.
The contest is split into 17 categories including Verdi, Garibaldi, Hungarian and Dali. Rules on entry are strict; wax and hairspray are acceptable for most classes of beard, but hair dye and hair extensions are banned as performance enhancing substances. The winner in the coveted full natural beard category was Jack Passion from San Francisco: "I feel fantastic, I'm 23 and I have the best beard in the world," he said. "I looked like a groom; too bad you never get married when you have a huge beard."

LONDON (AFP) Some of the most stylish fuzzy faces from across the globe gathered in Britain on Saturday to do battle over their beards.
The World Beard and Moustache Championships 2007 saw a wealth of the planet's most bizarre facial hairstyles congregating in Brighton on the southern English coast.
Some 250 competitors from Britain, Germany, the United States and many other countries were on parade on the seafront for the biennial event.
"Everybody has got a smile on their faces. It's a whole day of seeing amazing facial hair," said organiser Steve Parsons of London-based group The Handlebar Club.
He insisted facial hair was growing in popularity.
"It has been a dying breed but they seem to be on the increase, moustaches. It's picking up in younger men," he insisted.
Competitors were vying for the tankard with a moustache shield that comes with victory.
This weekend world championship called «World Beard and Moustache Championship» took place in the English city of Brighton. The competition was divided into two phases. Initially, participants were required to show jurors his mustache and beard in all its glory, Subway on the podium. In the second round, the judges check the authenticity of their hair and soft and silky.

Brighton, England, saw a lot of hair on Saturday (September 1st). It was the annual World Beard and Moustache Championship. Im not sure who won, but looking through the flickr pool, there are quite some doozies. Its hard to tell with some of them which category they fall under. The one above was one of my favorites. Some people are just able to grow facial hair really well. But then being able to style it in ways such as this takes some talent. Im not sure if he was going for elephant tusks, or what, but it definitely gets some attention. This next beard surely gets a prize for number of curls, though not to be outdone by this one . Spikes were a pretty popular style . But big curls were even more so. This guy had to have won for his freestyle beard of what might be London Bridge. Of course, there had to be good ol traditionalists. It looked like the participants were all good-humored people, all enjoying the chance to show off their facial hair. How could one attend such a competition and not fail to be impressed with what one saw? Although I dont think Id have a remote chance of winning, I think it might be fun to attempt something like this one day.

LONDON (AP) - One contestant had a mustache twisted into the shape of London's Tower Bridge; others sported bushy beards that would make Grizzly Adams envious. In the end, Beard Team USA nabbed four of the top honors _ by a whisker _ at the World Beard and Mustache Championships.
About 250 shaggy men from around the world competed Saturday in 17 different classes of facial hair at the competition in Brighton, England.
The event had long been dominated by German beard clubs, but the Americans made a strong showing at this year's competition, taking victories in four categories.
Jack Passion, a 23-year-old from San Francisco, won the highly competitive "Full Natural Beard" competition with his flowing orange fuzz.
"I feel fantastic," he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "I'm 23 and I have the best beard in the world."
He attributed part of his success to his outfit, a blue tuxedo and bowler hat, which helped bring out the red in his beard.
"I looked like a groom," he said. "Too bad you never get married when you have a huge beard."
The mustache categories include the "Dali" _ slender with long tips, straight or arching up _ and the big and bushy "Hungarian," while the beard categories ranged from the shorter "Verdi" to the rounder, more expansive "Garibaldi."
Those with particularly fanciful fuzz _ like the man with the Tower Bridge growing from his face _ competed in freestyle categories.
Competitors were barred from using extensions or hair pins, although wax and hairspray were allowed in some cases.
The first World Beard and Mustache Championship was held by beard enthusiasts in Germany in 1990. The next championships in 2009 will be held in Anchorage, Alaska.
"Anchorage knows how to put on a show," said David Traver, 42, who is organizing the 2009 event. "And they have a fantastic appreciation for whiskers."

A group of hirsute men posed and preened before a panel of judges today in a bid to be crowned the hairiest of them all.
The World Beard and Moustache Championship 2007 took place in Brighton.
Organiser Steve Parsons of The Handlebar Club said 250 competitors vied to be king in categories including the best moustache and the fullest beard.
The competition has serious objectives: "to encourage and celebrate standards of excellence in the growth, design and presentation of facial hair".
But, most importantly, it also wants to make people happy.
Mr Parsons said of today's sold-out event: "Everybody has got a smile on their faces. It's a whole day of seeing amazing facial hair."
He said facial hair was making a comeback. Mr Parsons said: "It has been a dying breed but they seem to be on the increase, moustaches. It's picking up in younger men."
He said the most popular competitions were the full natural beard and the freestyle beard. One competitor used wax to sculpt a beard in homage to Brighton Pier.
Sub classes in the full beards category included the Garibaldi and the Verdi.
Competitors were banned from using hair dye, extensions and hairpins but wax and hair spray were allowed.
Winners will become the proud owners of a tankard with a moustache shield.
The competition was preceded by a 30-minute parade through the streets of Brighton.
It will next take place in Anchorage, Alaska, in 2009.

Facial hair aficionados are having a hard time of it, if you believe a complaint this week from the American Moustache Institute that fans of the soup strainer have had to battle negative stereotyping since the "glory years" of the 70s, writes Stephen Abbott.
But now - at least in Britain - a fightback has begun. This Saturday, hundreds of men will take to the streets of Brighton to show they're hairy-faced and proud.
The seaside town is playing host to the annual World Beard and Moustache Championships, which will see up to 300 shaving-averse men from across the globe battle it out for the title.
Organised by the Handlebar Club of Great Britain (whose members must possess "a hirsute appendage of the upper lip, with graspable extremities"), the contest will showcase the breadth of facial hair talent out there.
Entrants will show off styles ranging from the Dali to the Musketeer, the Garibaldi to the Full Beard Freestyle.
All those taking part have been invited to join a 30-minute parade through Brighton before taking to the catwalk in the afternoon. In previous years, hundreds of fans have turned out to see the world's best beards.
George Haskins, one of two Alaskans travelling to Britain for the event, can't wait for it to start. "I'm going to have a hell of a good time," he told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.
Hot on the heels of the championships comes Tacheback 2007, a month-long charitable event celebrating men and their top-lip fuzz.
With a simple slogan - "Grow a tache. Raise cash" - organisers are rallying men across Britain to throw down their razors for the whole of September and get sponsored to battle their mates in a bid to see who can grow the most outlandish facial hair.
Last year's campaign raised £165,000, with all proceeds going to Everyman research into testicular and prostate cancers.

The contest's aim was to "encourage and celebrate standards of excellence in the growth, design and presentation of facial hair", while also "putting a smile on people's faces".
Show organiser Steve Parsons said there were some competitors who had gone to great lengths.
"The freestyle beard is probably the most spectacular one because basically, as the name suggests, it's freestyle, so you can do anything you like.
"For example at the last championships in Berlin, one of the competitors there actually styled his beard in the shape of the Brandenburg Gate with horses and flags and everything."
Proceeds this year will go to a testicular cancer charity and the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton.
Previous events have also been held in Norway, Sweden and the US, with the 2009 championships already set to head to Alaska.

Ja, jongens, we zijn er klaar voor ! ESA-snorren Rik en ik gaan naar Brighton ! Rik is geregistreerd bij de 'Hongaarse snorren' (met 7 tegenkandidaten) en ik ben ingeschreven bij de 'Keizerlijke bakkebaarden' (met 10 concurenten). De vrouwkes gaan natuurlijk ook mee. Vandaag nog de lokale pers over de vloer gehad voor een dubbel-interview, morgen komt er ook nog een reporter met fotograaf,... Het wordt nu wel héél spannend...
Vrijdag met de boot van Calais naar Dover, dan een toeristische route langs de zuidkust van Engeland om dan in Brighton ons intrek te nemen in een knus hotelletje. Voor we naar het Brighton Center gaan, rijden we misschien nog een eindje door naar het Arundel Castle.

A list of the rules of judging for the 2007 World Beard and Moustache Championships (which have just taken place). For more info, including descriptions of beard and moustache categories, see the website here
1. In the morning of the competition, each competitor will attend a 'pre-judging' where the intended category is confirmed.
2. The participants of each class will be presented in a group, then individually to the jury which consists of seven persons who will give their votes in secret.
3. Each jury member will give a score of between 5 and 10 points to each entrant. Half points are possible.
4. The points 10, 9.5 and 9 can only be given once by each judge in each class.
5. The highest and lowest points for each entrant will not be included in the total score.
6. The positions first, second and third must be decided clearly. In the event of equal scores, a second vote will be conducted.
7. Protest of any decisions of the judges will incur disqualification from the competition.
8. Every participant receives a diploma. The three winners of each class will receive a prize.

Uitgeverij Snor maakt frisse, grappige, mooi vormgegeven boeken. Highbrow, chic en intelligent, en mét snor. Onze boeken zijn praktisch, betaalbaar, fijn om naar te kijken en leuk om te lezen.
Een Indonesische baby van een maand is dé nieuwe attractie van Jakarta. De baby heeft een grijze baard en een snor van een paar centimeter lang.
De grijze baard en snor zijn aanleiding voor een grote stroom geruchten. De baby zou geboren zijn met het Arabische woord voor god op zijn oorlel. Ook had de placenta volgens de vader opvallende kleuren: rood, wit en blauw.
Inmiddels zijn er al honderden bezoekers geweest om de zeer merkwaardige verschijning te aanschouwen. De moeder van het kind, een meisje van 16, hoopt dat haar zoon een bijzondere gave heeft. Maar wat die gave moet zijn is niet helemaal duidelijk.
Zaterdagnamiddag is 'de Kleinste Steeple' ongetwijfeld het top-familiefeest met de Waregemse Koerse Feesten. Elk jaar blijft dit kinderfestival de families boeien met steeds nieuwe verrassende en buitengewone attracties. Het is eenfamiliefestival waar de mondjes van open vallen. Dit jaar werd er gekozen voor het thema 'snor' en zo wordt Park Baron Casier heel even het rijk van de sneue snordragers.
De kleinste steeple blijft hét ultieme familiemoment waarbij nationale en internationale straattheatergroepen en tal van vrijwilligersen verenigingen hun best doen om zeker de kinderen maar ook hun begeleidende ouders en grootouders een unieke speel- en bewonder-namiddag te bezorgen. Dit keer tekenen de sneue snordragers, KSA, CHIRO centrum, Ten Anker, compagnie de URN, Ap&Diks, Grabbelpas, vrijwilligerswerking CC de Schakel & de West-Vlaamse snorrenclub voor de organisatie.
Sneue snordragers snorren zich te pletter tijdens de Kleinste Steeple 2007. Mocht je er nog aan twijfelen de snorren zijn er, je vindt ze overal. Tussen de struiken, in de lucht, op lippen, op veel te dikke konten en hier en daar zelfs op de rug van een giraf. Zaterdag 25 augustus 2007 vind je in Park Baron Casier een regelrecht snorrenpark met snorfietsen, monssnors, melksnorren, snorrenfeeën, een barbier, snortrekkers en een snorrenparade.
Zoals reeds voorafgaandelijk medegedeeld, werd Gerard Vercauteren, de belleman van Temse, dit jaar verkozen tot 'Snor van de gemeente Temse'. Een initiatief van de Europese Snorrenclub Antwerpen (ESA). Deze benoeming kadert in de aanstelling van een reeks 'besnorde Vlaamse bellemannen' tot snor van hun stad of gemeente.
Na ikzelf in 2006, was het deze keer de beurt aan deze sympatieke champetter uit Temse.
Het begon allemaal op zaterdagnamiddag 8 september, alwaar een delegatie van de ESA een afspraak had op het cabinet van de lokale burgervader Luc De Ryck.
Dan begaf een vierkoppige jury, bestaande uit ESA-voorzitter Willy Dupon, belleman Guy Vandendriessche, ESA-voorman Eddy Matthyssens en de Voorzitster van de Dienst Toerisme in Temse Hilde Van Raemdonck zich naar enkele deelnemende bakkers, onder leiding van Gerard Vercauteren zelf, geflankeerd door de ESA-vlaggendrager Wim en Gemeenteraadslid Annemie Blommaert. Er was namelijk (naar Izegems voorbeeld) een wedstrijd uitgeschreven onder de lokale banketbakkers en patissiers om onder het thema Kiekeboe/snor/Temse/belleman iets te creëren
En zoals op vele ESA-activiteiten was ook Annie weer van dienst als fotograaf ! Merci Annie !!
De eerste afspraak was bij bakker Anné in Tielrode.
Daar ontdekten we een prachtig winkeldecor, helemaal in het vooropgestelde thema.
Het gebak zelf viel wel wat klein uit. Maar daarnaast ontwierp deze bakker een zeer origineel meergranen-snorrenbroodje. Uiteindelijk liep deze bakker toch wel met de originaliteitsprijs weg !
Vandaaruit ging het richting Cauwerburg waar we te gast waren bij de bakkerszaak Cathy.
Een Kiekeboe-affiche wees er ons op dat wij aan het goede adres waren. De bakker zelf stond ons op te wachten met een reuzentaart met de afbeelding van belleman Gerard samen met Merho aan de kaai, het ontwerp dat we terugvinden op de gemeentekaart.
Samen met nog enkele kleinere modellen, was zijn vitrine al half gevuld met lekkers.
Volgende op het lijstje was bakkerij Wauters, in de Pastoor Boelstraat.
Daar troffen we een reuzentaart aan met de afbeelding van de familie Kiekeboe, maar geen enkele referentie naar de besnorde belleman van Temse... Ze zal waarschijnlijk wel héél lekker geweest zijn. !
Nu ging het naar de zaak Van Uden in de Scheldestraat.
Een enorme Kiekeboekop keek ons vervaard aan vanachter de vitrine. Mooi gemaakt, maar weeral geen verwijzing naar Temse, snor of belleman. En dat kost punten !
Groot was onze verbazing toen we bij bakker Wim Vermeulen op de 'Velle' aankwamen.
Een mooie tekening van een roepende belleman verwelkomde ons, samen met een reuzenmand vol lekker-ogende snorrenkoeken.
Proeven was hier dus de boodschap : een overlekkere croissant, gevuld met appel en overgoten met een lichte chocolade. Een formule die bakker Wim in de toekomst verder zal uitwerken en te koop zal aanbieden : de 'appelsnor' is geboren !
Ten laatste vielen we de bakkerszaak D'Haen aan de Gelaagstraat in Steendorp binnen. En dit sloeg alles : een grote roomtaart met de afbeelding van onze Gerard middenin een krans van vers fruit, geflankeerd door talloze kiekeboefiguurtjes afgedrukt op een marsepeinplaatje. Grandioos !! Die werd dan ook unaniem als winnaar van deze wedstrijd uitgeroepen.
Als verzamelaar viel mijn oog direct op het statige koks-figuurtje op de toog, maar de bakkerin wilde er geen afstand van doen ...Maar ze wilde wel nog even poseren met de taart en met de 'maskotte' van de zaak.
Van al dat heen en weer gerijdt krijgt men dorst, dus... op naar cafe 'De Temsche Brug' waar er van een lekkere pint kon genoten worden.
De Temsche Brug, in 1872 gestart als café-restaurant, kende daarna decennialang een hoogbloei als herberg. Het begint nu sedert 2006 een nieuw leven als praatcafé.
De eerste Scheldebrug (1870) veranderde het aanschijn van Temse. Zij werd gebouwd om de spoorwegverbinding Mechelen-Terneuzen mogelijk te maken. Temse kreeg daardoor een station. En een Stationsstraat.
Deze ingrijpende ontwikkelingen droegen wezenlijk bij tot de verdere ontsluiting van de regio. Samen met de Wilfordboten (°1857) hadden de brug en de trein een belangrijke weerslag op het hele gemeenschapsleven. In hun zog volgde een spervuur aan initiatieven, o.a. de oprichting van nieuwe zaken. Ook herbergen en eetgelegenheden. In 1872 opende café-restaurant Het Brughuis zijn deuren. Het schreef onder verschillende namen geschiedenis.
Eigenaars en uitbaters
Het pand werd in 1872 gebouwd door handelaar Leon Hillaert. In 1879 verkocht hij het aan Theofiel Cammaert, brouwer uit Bornem. De familie Cammaert, destijds gereputeerd om haar bieren (o.a. drijdraad, de godendrank van de kaailopers), bleef eigenaar tot begin jaren 50, toen de brouwerij werd overgenomen door Stella Artois, dat later op haar beurt werd opgeslorpt door Interbrew. In 1986 nam Marc Van Kerckhove (Hingene) de bierhandel Cammaert over, in 1998 kocht hij De Temsche Brug.
De eerste bewoners en uitbaters waren Henri Maes (1829-1891) en Maria Smet (1841-1935).
Nog vers in het geheugen ligt de hoogbloei onder Theofiel De Wilde, zeg maar Fiel Laguerre (1897-1980), en Leineke De Molenaer (1891-1970). Zij veranderden de naam in Het Luxhuis, naar het Lux-bier van de brouwerij Cammaert. In 1946 richtte Fiel er biljartclub De Standaard op: zij heeft onafgebroken een sleutelrol gespeeld in het plaatselijke biljartleven. In 1955, toen geen Lux-bier meer werdt gebrouwen en de nieuwe brug een feit was geworden, veranderde Fiel de naam in De Nieuwe Brug. De legendarische Fiel Laguerre leidde de zaak 50 jaar (1931-1980).
Van 1980 tot 2002 werd zij met succes verder gezet door Maria Smet en Julien Dewintere, daarna door Rebecca Mosselmans. Bij de intrede van deze laatste wijzigde de eigenaar de naam in De Temsche Brug.
Op 1 april 2006 begon het pand een nieuw leven: het werd een praatcafé. Zaakvoerster is Nancy Poeck. Men kan er ook terecht voor snacks. De vernieuwde zaak heeft een vergaderzaal (tot 35 personen) en een kinderspeelruimte.
Dan verhuisden we naar de Loft Dacca in de Kasteelstraat voor het officiële gedeelte. In deze loft van een vroeger textielbedrijf is er op de derde verdieping een gerenoveerde zolderruimte voor wisseltentoonstellingen. Daar verenigden we ons met nog enkele andere ESA-leden en hun dames en werden we hartelijk verwelkomd door de burgemeester Luc De Ryck.
Ik als belleman mocht de receptie 'openen' en Willy Dupon, Voorzitter van de Europese Snorrenclub Antwerpen kreeg als eerste het woord.
Dit was de gelegenheid waar belleman Gerard (zoals steeds vergezeld door zijn vrouwtje) werd gehuldigt als 'Snor van Temse' en vereremerkt met de symbolen van de ESA-club : een speldje, een t-shirt, een polo en een clubdas. Daarnaast krijg hij ook nog een kader met daarin de afdruk van het 'Antwaarps Snorrelieke', ooit geschreven door de Antwerpse bard John Lundström.
De burgemeester zelf mocht een kader in ontvangst nemen met een afbeelding van een typische Antwerps huisje 'uit de rosse buurt'.
Vervolgens werd Merho (Robert Merhottein), de geestelijke vader van Kiekeboe nog maar eens (voor de zoveelste keer dit jaar) gehuldigd voor zijn bijdrage aan 'Temse' in zijn strips en krijg ook hij diverse geschenken aangeboden, waaronder een super-de-luxe-uitvoering van het album 'Berten Rodenbach' van Jef Nijs.
Van de uitgever kregen Merho en Gerard dan een verzameld werk van 30 jaar Kiekeboe uitgereikt.

Dan werden de taarten aangesneden en bakker Anné mocht zijn originaliteitsprijs in ontvangst nemen : een mooie snor in kunsthars, sinds 2007 een relatiegeschenk dat de ESA aan laureaten schenkt.
Achteraf komen we te weten dat zijn charmant vrouwtje ook nog eens gemeenteraadslid is te Temse.
ESA-voorzitter Willy Dupon maakte natuurlijk van de gelegenheid gebruik om een exemplaar van '30-jaar Kiekeboe' te laten signeren door Merho zelf.
Nog even een kiekje van de twee ESA-belleman-snorren voor de pers en dan konden we eindelijk eens een blik werpen op die wondermooie tentoonstelling.
Het bijzonderste daaraan is dat dit het gevolg is van een jarenlange verzameling Dinky Toys door Robert Merhottein zelf.
Laten we vooral niet vergeten te vermelden dat die prachtige tentoonstelling over 'De Auto's in de Kiekeboestrips' in de Loft Dacca nog loopt tot en met 7 oktober 2007.
Ook de dames waren onder de indruk van deze verzameling.
Belleman Gerard Vercauteren wordt op zaterdag 8 september door de Europese Snorrenclub Antwerpen officieel aangesteld tot De snor van Temse. Naar aanleiding daarvan wordt een snorrenbakwedstrijd voor de bakkers van Temse ingericht.
De aanstelling van Gerard Vercauteren tot De snor van Temsevindt plaats bij de opening van een expo in Temse rond een andere beroemde snorrendrager: Kiekeboe. Die viert dit jaar zijn 30ste verjaardag en dat wordt onder meer gevierd met een tentoonstelling vanaf 8 september in de Dacca Loft in de Kasteelstraat 74. Als gevolg van de aanstelling van Gerard Vercauteren en het 30-jarige bestaan van Kiekeboe wordt een snorrenbakwedstrijd georganiseerd. Alle bakkers van groot-Temse worden uitgenodigd om een gebak of taart te bakken rond de Temsese belleman, Kiekeboe of hun snor. Belleman Gerard Vercauteren brengt alle bakkers van groot-Temse persoonlijk op de hoogte van het initiatief. Het is de bedoeling dat de bakkers hun creaties op zaterdag 8 september in hun uitstalraam tentoonstellen. Een jury, onder leiding van de voorzitter van de Europese Snorrenclub Antwerpen, zal de bakwerken beoordelen en de prijzen uitreiken bij de opening van de expo rond Kiekeboe.
