I read a lot and thats why I thought that it was a good idea to post now and then some messages here on the blog about books and/or writers. Of course I want tell important things about the books else theres no fun to read the books anymore. Currently I am reading a book of Wilbur Smith. And if theres one author of whom I have a lot of books then its Wilbur Smith.
Wilbur Smith is born on January 9th 1933 in North-Rhodesia (now Zambia). His parents were British. Some time ago I was talking about malaria because of Music for Life, Wilbur Smith also had malaria as a child (he was only 18 months old) and luckily he survived it. In 1964 he wrote his first book When the Lion Feeds. This books goes about the family Courtney. It was the first book of a trilogy but there are already more books about this family.
This story takes place at the end of the 19th century. The Courtneys live in Natal, in South Africa. In When the Lion Feeds the story goes about Sean and his twin brother Garrick. Firstly we are in their childhood and theres the wish to become a successful farmer. But this is brusquely interrupted by the Zulu Wars (1879). The second part of the book goes about the Gold Rush in South Africa.
The Zulu Wars were between the British Empire and the Zulu Empire.
The Gold Rush in South Africa was named the Witwatersrand Gold Rush. Witwatersrand is a low range of hills in South Africa. It forms a continental divide with run-off to the north draining into the Limpopo River and to the south draining into the Orange River.
The description by the book:
It is the 1870s and twin brothers Sean and Garrick Courtney are born into the wilds of Natal. They could not be more different, and fate, war and the jealous schemes of a woman are to drive them even further apart. But as history unfolds, a continent is awakening. And on the horizon is the promise of fortune, adventure, destiny and love...
If Im not wrong there are currently 11 books about the family Courtney. Wilbur Smith also has a series about the family Ballantyne. There are 4 books in this series. Connoisseurs will probably say that Im wrong. And I havent yet read all books of the two families but there are 2 books in which both families appear together. These are Triumph of the Sun and Assegai. And I count these two separately. If the two series are combined and classified on date then one can read through the history of both families in 17 books.
There is a 3rd series written by Wilbur Smith, it goes about the life of Taita, a highly skilled eunuch slave in Ancient Egypt. Its also a beautiful series currently consisting of 4 books. Im reading the last book of this series at the moment The Quest.
There are also a lot of standalone novels written by Wilbur Smith. And I hope that there still may follow many books (in the series and standalone), because I really like to read his books.
The moment you start to read a book of him you place yourself in the same time and region of the book and its almost impossible to stop reading before the book is out.
If you want to read a good book, an exciting book, a story that is highly interweaved with the true history then you have to start reading one of the series of Wilbur Smith and there is a big chance that youll read the whole series. For the series about Courtney and Ballantyne I started with the book Birds of prey because it lies first in the time (currently it is). But you also can follow the order of the trilogies or start with the first book of the family Ballantyne A falcon flies. The first book in the series of Taita is River God.
