Onlangs zei ik langs mijn
neus weg
taiji (quan) is zoals het taiji symbool (yin yang symbool) het gaat
over yin en yang maar niet altijd evenveel dat wisselt overal en altijd.
Dit is zo evident dat het
verdient om dit wat beter te bekijken.
Meestal wordt het taiji
symbool vertaalt als ultiem supreem .... dat kan dan wel een goede vertaling
zijn, het zegt me weinig, ik heb er geen houvast aan, wat wil het zeggen? en dan in een context van
een taiji quan beoefenaar?
In de Nederlandstalige
wikipedia staat er niets over het taiji symbool in de Engels wel, zie wat
verder enige extracten.
Dat klinkt allemaal goed
en intellectueel maar voor taiji quan beoefening kan een poging tot associatie
van de theoretisch filosofische benadering met eenvoudige begrippen wel deugd
doen. We doen een poging met de hoofdgedachten:
ultiem suppreem, dualiteit yin en yang die alles omvat en één maakt, een
beginsel na wuji (de oongedifferentieerde ruimte) een toestand van potentialiteit
...
Ultiem suppreem, dat
lijkt op overal en altijd in de tijd en in de ruimte en dit op verschillende
niveaus: het heelal, de aarde, wat op de aarde en onder de hemel zit, iedere mens
en dus ook de beoefenaar, de geest/het hart/het lichaam van de beoefenaar, de
armen, benen, romp taille van de beoefenaar en zo maar door tot de cel, en de
bestanddelen van de cel, atomen, ionen kernen ...die op hun beurt welhaast de
vorm van een heelal hebben.
Ik associeer het met iets
kompleets, de taiji quan vormen laten toe om iets kompleets te ervaren, iets
dat alles van je solliciteert, die je ook helemaal kan laten opnemen in de natuur
in zijn eenheid en totaliteit.
Het heeft ook iets van Mandelbrot
vormen, dingen die je steeds verder op zich zelf kan toepassen. Bij Mandelbrot
is de kustvorm in het groot van toepassing tot elke kust strookje, je moet
alleen maar steeds precieser kijken, zo kan je de taiji vorm als onderdeel van
je training bekijken of je hele taiji carriere of als de verzameling van
posities die dan weer een samnstelling is van bewegingen en intenties van
handen en voeten enz ... steeds meer in detail.
Een dualitiet zoals yin
en yang die alles omvat en één maakt, dat lijkt op alles is met alles
verbonden met dezelfde niveaus in het groot en het klein, de beoefenaar met
hemel en aarde, de geest, het hart en het lichaam van de beoefenaar, alle delen
van het lichaam enz...
Taiji quan beoefenen is heel
bewust zijn, heel goed luisteren naar elk aspect van je omgeving, naar elk
aspect van je activiteit, naar elk onderdeel van de geest en het lichaam elk apart
en alles geintegreerd in één vloeiende beleving van beweging, eigenlijk van
dynamiek van geest en lichaam. De geest weet van elk deeltje wat het doet, maar
ook hoe alles samenhangt, het hart staat open voor alles en iedereen en het
lichaam is een aaneenschakeling van zinvol bewegen. Die zin is zowel weten waar
naar toe, maar ook waarom in termen van martiale toepassing, eventueel een
mooie poëtische naam, de impact op je lichaam en specifiek op de energiestromen
in het lichaam en de connecties met de buitenwereld....het laat ook toe om te
zijn en te doen zoals de dynamiek van de natuur en de wereld ...
Het beginsel, na wuji (de
ongedifferentieerde ruimte), een toestand van potentialiteit ...hier denk ik
dat je het als een principe mag beschouwen, niet noodzakelijk of alleen het
chronologisch begin (dat mag ook) maar iets fundamenteels waaruit de verdere
dynamiek voortvloeit maar niet noodzakelijk in de tijd, gewoon overal en
altijd, en zo zijn we weer bij het begin, of het einde, van een cirkel is dat
inderdaad moeilijk te zeggen. Voor taiji beoefening wil dit oa zeggen dat ook
al herhaal je steeds weer hetzelfde steeds verandert je inzicht, je beleving ...
het helpt als je in open lucht oefent maar dat hoeft niet. Het is ook onuitputtelijk
in de zin dat je geen energie genereert maar je eignelijk in harmonie brengt
met de energie,, als het ware geleid je het, zowel voor yin en yang en laat je
de natuur zijn weg gaan ...
Het heeft ook iets van
een heel fundamentele wetmatigheid, die alles kan uitleggen, en zoals met de
traditionele Chinese geneeskunde die de vijf elementen als fundamentele
theoretische basis heeft om een heel pragmatische geneeskunde te maken zo is dit
taiji symbool een theorie waarop heel veel taiji quan en ook qi gong systemen en
vormen enz steunen. Elk met zijn objectieven en benodigde vaardigheden.
In deze zin kan men met
deze hoofdeigenschappen van taiji

kompleet voor geest, hart, lichaam
-
steeds toepasbaar op zich zelf, naar meer detail in de persoon en naar meer
harmonie met de dingn in de wereld
-
met zin (naar keuze één of meer betekenissen)
-
onuitputtelijk in energie en ervaring
andere welness
aanbiedingen aftoetsen om zo taiji quan te positioneren.
In mijn beleving is dat
tot nu toe nog uniek, maar dat maakt ieder voor zich uit.

Taiji 太極 (literally
"great pole") is a Chinese cosmological term for the "Supreme
Ultimate" state of undifferentiated absolute and infinite potentiality,
contrasted with the Wuji 無極 "Without Ultimate". Taiji is best known in the West from
the name Taijiquan (or T'ai chi ch'uan) 太極拳 "Supreme Ultimate Fist"[citation needed].
Chinese taiji 太極 is a
compound of tai 太 "great; grand; supreme; extreme; very; too" (a
superlative variant of da 大 "big; large; great; very") and ji 極 "pole;
roof ridge; highest/utmost point; extreme; earth's pole; reach the end; attain;
exhaust". In analogy with the figurative meanings of English pole, Chinese
ji 極 "ridgepole" can mean "geographical pole;
direction" (e.g., siji 四極 "four corners of the earth; world's end"), "magnetic
pole" (Beiji 北極 "North Pole" or yinji 陰極
"negative pole; anode"), or "celestial pole" (baji 八極
"farthest points of the universe; remotest place").
Common English translations of the
cosmological Taiji are the "Supreme Ultimate" (Le Blanc 1985, Zhang
and Ryden 2002) or "Great Ultimate" (Chen 1989, Robinet 2008); but
other versions are the "Supreme Pole" (Needham and Ronan 1978),
"Great Absolute", or "Supreme Polarity" (Adler 1999).
Any philosophy that asserts two elements
such as the yin-yang of Chinese philosophy will also look for a term to
reconcile the two, to ensure that both belong to the same sphere of discourse.
The term 'supreme ultimate' performs this role in the philosophy of the Book of
Changes. In the Song dynasty it became a metaphysical term on a par with the
Way. (2002:179)
The Way has attributes and evidence, but it
has no action and no form. It may be transmitted but cannot be received. It may
be apprehended but cannot be seen. From the root, from the stock, before there
was heaven or earth, for all eternity truly has it existed. It inspirits demons
and gods, gives birth to heaven and earth. It lies above the zenith but is not
high; it lies beneath the nadir but is not deep. It is prior to heaven and
earth, but is not ancient; it is senior to high antiquity, but it is not old.

Taiji also appears in the Xìcí 繫辭
"Appended Judgments" commentary to the Yijing, an early section
traditionally attributed to King Wen of Zhou and Duke of Zhou.
Therefore there is in the Changes the Great Primal Beginning. This
generates the two primary forces. The two primary forces generate the four
images. The four images generate the eight trigrams. The eight trigrams
determine good fortune and misfortune. Good fortune and misfortune create the great
field of action. (tr. Wilhelm and Baynes 1967:318-9)
The fundamental postulate is the
"great primal beginning" of all that exists, t'ai chi in its
original meaning, the "ridgepole". Later Chinese philosophers devoted
much thought to this idea of a primal beginning. A still earlier beginning, wu
chi, was represented by the symbol of a circle. Under this conception, t'ai chi
was represented by the circle divided into the light and the dark, yang and
yin, Yin yang.svg. This symbol has also played a significant part in India and
Europe. However, speculations of a Gnostic-dualistic character are foreign to
the original thought of the I Ching; what it posits is simply the ridgepole,
the line. With this line, which in itself represents oneness, duality comes
into the world, for the line at the same time posits an above and a below, a
right and left, front and back in a word, the world of the opposites.

Zhou's key terms Wuji and Taiji appear in
the opening line 自無極而太極, which Adler notes could also be translated "The Supreme
Polarity that is Non-Polar!".
Non-polar (wuji) and yet Supreme Polarity
(taiji)! The Supreme Polarity in activity generates yang; yet at the limit of
activity it is still. In stillness it generates yin; yet at the limit of stillness
it is also active. Activity and stillness alternate; each is the basis of the
other. In distinguishing yin and yang, the Two Modes are thereby established.
The alternation and combination of yang and yin generate water, fire, wood,
metal, and earth. With these five [phases of] qi harmoniously arranged, the
Four Seasons proceed through them. The Five Phases are simply yin and yang; yin
and yang are simply the Supreme Polarity; the Supreme Polarity is fundamentally
Non-polar. [Yet] in the generation of the Five Phases, each one has its nature.

Instead of usual Taiji translations
"Supreme Ultimate" or "Supreme Pole", Adler uses
"Supreme Polarity" (see Robinet 1990) because Zhu Xi describes it as
the alternating principle of yin and yang, and
Taiji is understood to be the highest
conceivable principle, that from which existence flows. This is very similar to
the Daoist idea "reversal is the movement of the Dao". The
"supreme ultimate" creates yang and yin: movement generates yang;
when its activity reaches its limit, it becomes tranquil. Through tranquility
the supreme ultimate generates yin. When tranquility has reached its limit,
there is a return to movement. Movement and tranquility, in alternation, become
each the source of the other. The distinction between the yin and yang is
determined and the two forms (that is, the yin and yang) stand revealed. By the
transformations of the yang and the union of the yin, the 5 elements (Qi) of
water, fire, wood, metal and earth are produced. These 5 Qi become diffused,
which creates harmony. Once there is harmony the 4 seasons can occur. Yin and
yang produced all things, and these in their turn produce and reproduce, this
makes these processes never ending. (Wu, 1986)
