Let’s introduce myself first. My name is Ine and I’m from Belgium where I studied French and Chinese. Last year, I decided to come to China to improve my Chinese and to pass on my knowledge of the French language to the Chinese students. It’s a choice I don’t regret making.

The first month was difficult. Although I’ve met a lot of friendly people who helped me to find my way in China, the language barrier is hard to conquer. After landing in China, still a bit jetlagged and drowsy, immediately you get drowned in the new language. It is sometimes frustrated not to be able to tell people exactly what you mean. It’s been now three months since my arrival in China and I notice already a big difference. It’s still difficult but my Chinese has improved a lot so it’s less frustrated.

Remembering names can also be troublesome sometimes. Not only the names of my students but the names of all people I meet are difficult to remember. I’ve been meeting so many new people that it is impossible to remember them all. Sometimes people say hello to me and I really can’t remember when I’ve met them. It’s easy for Chinese people to remember when they meet a foreigner but it is not so easy for the foreigner to remember all the times when he has met Chinese people. But I will get there.

Of course, it’s not all bad news. When I arrived at the airport in Xi’an, the school provided a car from the university to pick me up. I was welcomed by Tina and Andi, who helped me both through the first days. We got warm words of welcome from the head of the international department of the university. I met Dawei and Grace whom I helped rebuilding the international café. The first contact with my students went by without any problems and in the meantime, they took me to get to know the city of Xi’an and the mountains surrounding Xi’an.

I’m already three months here and there are still so many more months to go to meet people and to experience Xi’an and China. I’m looking forward to it.
