X ISLE - COSBY & NELSON
Wat was er eerst de comics of de tv-serie ... In sommige gevallen beginnen de grenzen te vervagen. Comics die verfilmd worden en tv-series die een tweede leven krijgen in de comics. Dat beide mediums nauwe banden hebben is voor iedereen al duidelijk. Bekendere en minder bekendere schrijvers uit de tv-wereld zetten almaar vaker de stap naar comics. Zo zijn er J.M. Straczynski, Allan Heinberg en Andrew Cosby. Deze laatste is de bedenker van de tv-serie Eureka, momenteel nog niet te zien bij ons.
MetX Isle is hij alvast niet aan zijn proefstuk bezig. Eerder schreef hij Damn Nation verschenen bij Dark Horse en pende hij voor BOOM! STUDIOS titels zoals The Savage Brothers, The Enigma Cypher & ... Damn Nation staat zelfs in de steiger voor een verfilming in 2009.
Hoe meer ik de strip herbekijk, hoe meer er linken of gelijknissen uit de tv-wereld me worden voorgeschoteld. Niet alleen de tekenstijl heeft iets filmisch, de titel doet me rechtstreeks denken aan de lay out van X-files. Plus een paar characters vertonen opmerkelijke vergelijkenissen met acteurs. Is dat soms ... (de regen heeft er ook iets mee te maken). Er zitten er nog een paar frappante voorbeelden in. Zoeken maar !!

Ok, we kennen al veel elementen uit verschillende mediums. Maar storen deed me dat zeker niet. Het zit vol leuke plot wendingen waardoor het spanningsgehalte hoog blijft. Ik heb er alvast van genoten. Nu jullie nog ...
ik heb er weer een favoriet karakter bij. Tao aka Tactical Augmented Organism. It's all in a name.
Na het herlezen van Sleeper (voor de zoveelste keer), geraakte ik helemaal in de ban de ultra manipulerende Tao. Maar niet alleen hij is in Sleeper zo lekker gemeen, er loopt er nog eentje rond. Een bad a$$ girl dat kickt op pijn in haar nachtelijke escapades, vloekt, smoort en het liefst van al de mannen in haar kruis stampt. We dwalen nu wel een beetje af, maar dat krijg je nu eenmaal met brave huisvadertjes.
Heeft het nu te maken met meesterlijke schrijverstalent van Ed Brubaker of met het feit het figuur ontsproten is uit de geest van Alan Moore. Ik heb daarom de nieuwe "Alan Moore's Complete Wildcats" Trade eens ter hand genomen. Hoe je het draait of keert, zelfs in slechte momenten, schrijft die kerel ver boven het gemiddelede. Hij weet wel van aanpakken. Het is echter Ed Brubaker die er nog een schep bovenop doet. Wat was er eerst het kip of het ei? Zoek het zelf maar uit. Beiden Trades / series zijn dikke aanraders, alhoewel Sleeper nog altijd mijn voorkeur geniet.

De Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) werd in 1944 gesticht door Professor Trevor Bruttenholm om de Nazis van antwoord te dienen op hun occulte aanslagen. Professor Bruttenholm was directeur tot 1950 en is momenteel vervangen Dr. Thomas Manning. Door de jaren heen kwamen er verschillende agents bij, zoals Liz Sherman, Johann Kraus, and Ben Daimio. Deze moesten het vertrek opvangen van Hellboy die de groep verlaten heeft in 2001. De relaties met andere gouvermentele en internationale organisaties en landen, met als uitzondering China en de CIA, is uistekend. BPRD staat overal hoog aangeschreven. In hun clash met de frog creatures waren ze USAs laatste hoop met een verhuis als gevolg. De nieuwe locatie werd het laatst gebruikt door een Nazi geleerde die in het bezit was van een enorme schat aan occulte informatie.
Aangezien Mike Mignola met duizend en één projecten bezig is en het verschijnen van nieuwe Hellboy verhalen op een laag pitje draait, is BPRD daarom een mooie aanvulling in afwachting van ... De meeste verhalen zijn geschreven door Mignola of op zijn minst onder zijn supervisie. Guy Davis is zowat de vaste tekenaar geworden. We kennen hem in Europa misschien ook wat beter van zijn franstalige reeks bij Humanoïde Associes:Les zombies qui on mangé le monde. Blijkbaar zit de voorliefde voor monsters er bij hem ingebakken.
Na wat doelloos rondzwerven op het internet, kwam ik Octane-tv tegen. Allicht zijn er duizenden van die sites in een dozijn. Normaal gezien hou ik niet langer vol dan 2 minuutjes staren op een klein scherm naar zenuwachtige MTV-style clips maar ... Just for the fun of it!
Black Looks publiceerde het volgende op hun website:
"The new Resident Evil
video game depicts a white man in what appears to be Africa killing
Black people. The Black people are supposed to be zombies and the white
mans job is to destroy them and save humanity. I have a job to do and
Im gonna see it through. This is problematic on so many levels, including the depiction of
Black people as inhuman savages, the killing of Black people by a white
man in military clothing, and the fact that this video game is marketed
to children and young adults. Start them young fearing, hating, and
destroying Black people."
Ondertussen hebben we allemaal al geleerd dat er geen betere publiciteit is om een nieuw game, strip, boek of film te promoten dan dat er één of andere actie groep zich er tegen uitspreekt. Zo ook met de nieuwe Resident Evil 5, na het lezen van het artikel moest ik natuurlijk op onderzoek uit. Het resultaat is de onderstaande videoclip op You-tube en bovenstaande pics. Terecht of onterecht die kritiek, daar spreek ik me niet over uit. Het ziet er wel een coole game uit !!
Deze trade is een mooi voorbeeld van een luchtige,pretentieloze en spijtig genoeg te korte geschiedenisles. Het is geen al te groot geheim dat de fransen en de engelsen doorheen de geschiedenis graag met elkaar op de vuist gingen. De geringste aanleiding resulteerde algauw in waar bloedbad. Beide partijen haalden op zulke momenten echt en letterlijk hun vuilste trukken boven.
Het verhaal wordt ons verteld door een soldaat uit het Britse leger, als een soort monoloog.
Het concept vond ik leuk en origineel maar het volume van het verhaal was een beetje aan de magere kant.
Mijn honger naar meer was niet gestild, niet verwonderlijk voor iemand met een omvangrijke buik. De tekeningen, zoals uit onderstaande voorbeelden blijkt, zijn verzorgd en 100% "mijne meug".
Al bij al heb ik er echt van genoten en hoop naar meer.
Ive wanted to do a historical project for years, says creator/writer Warren Ellis. And CRÉCY is, as you say, one of the great English stories. These are the stories we used to tell each other in drinking halls, and its nice to keep that alive, even as a curiosity. Its just a brilliant story. In the 14th century, an under-equipped English army is driven to face a surmounting force behind enemy lines, and the ensuing battle will change modern warfare.
The French response to (the battle of) Crécy says it all, explains Ellis. That the flower of French aristocracy was destroyed at Crécy by men of no value by which the writer meant ordinary Englishmen, peasants, the common people.

Wow!! Jeugdsentiment eerste klas. Ik herinner me die vrijdag of zaterdagen nog, terwijl mijn ouders sliepen, zat ik alleen naar "V" te kijken. We woonden toen in oud en groot huis. Ik sliep op het tweede verdiep. Talloze keren verwachtte ik dat er zo'n reptillian alien me bovenaan op de trap stond op te wachten. Waarschijnlijk zou de tv-serie niet dezelfde verwachtingen kunnen opwekken vanwege het tragere tempo of ouderwetse special effects. Voor mij zou zo een deel van de magie verloren gaan.
Zie nu: Tor and Forge Books brengen een oplossing. Niet alleen krijgen we de ontknoping, maar moeten we hiervoor gebruik maken van jeugdherinneringen en ons eigen inlevingsvermogen. Ik kijk er al vast naar uit.

Sinds het begin van zijn carriere, Harbringer bij Valiant en later Warriors of Plasm uitgegeven door het heen gegane Defiant beiden onder leiding van Jim Shooter, kijk ik keer op keer enthousiast uit naar nieuw werk van David Lapham. Eerder won hij al enkele awards met Stray Bullets & Murder Me Dead die hij in eigen beheer uitgaf onder de naam El Capitan. Maar aangezien hij wat meer financiele zekerheid wou voor zijn gezin, koos om voor grotere uitgeverijen te werken. Voor DC schreef hij al Detective Comics en Batman: City of Crime, voor Marvel nam hij onder andere Punisher onder handen en ook de serie Darkness bij Top Cow moest eraan geloven. Telkens val ik voor zijn realistische maar duistere crime-noir verhalen. David Lapham is voor mij een meester verteller zowel als schrijver als tekenaar.
Silverfish is qua sfeer en verhaal best te vergelijken met Murder Me Dead, een who-dunnit van de bovenste plank. Telkens wanneer een nieuwe ouder zich in een gezin opdringt, is er altijd één van de kinderen die het daar moeilijk mee heeft. Zo ook Mia, een zestien jarige tiener, die tot de vaststelling komt dat haar kersverse nieuwe stiefmoeder er een geheim adressenboekje op na houdt. Wat begint als een onschuldig kinderachtig detective spelletje wordt algauw een ware nachtmerrie. Zeker wanneer blijkt dat immobiliën makelaar Daniel, bezeten door een demonische silverfish nog een eitje te pellen heeft met haar. ( Wat wil je met zo'n beroep, die mannen zijn gewoonweg niet te vertrouwen ) Alles hangt van Suzanne af. Is ze echt slecht of is ze toch een potentiële goede moeder?

Off the train in the middle of winter at the station in Seoul, Bong-gu
and his mother bring a little spring time warmth to the capital.
Theyre from a poor isolated area but on the beautiful sea. Shes
looking for her kids dad who left without a trace. An old man meets
the kid and actually remembers seeing his dad. He manages to bring them
together. Dad had dreams coming from the country, hitting the big city.
They didnt quite work out. He had become too ashamed to show himself
again. From desperation, the outcome of this story, however, will bring
warmth to any heart, showing that the hope and love of humanity can
even melt the cold indifference of our urban societies. A beautifully,
poetically illustrated little manhwa lit.
Run, Bong-Gu, Run! is een koreaanse manhwa, waarvan je zeker kan van zijn dat het niet rond verliefde schoolmeisjes of exploderende buren draait. Het is een verhaal over vreemdelingen in de stad die op één of andere manier verbonden met elkaar zijn. Het is een simpel verhaal maar wel eentje dat een gevoelige snaar raakt. Zijn verfijnde aquarellen, die gefotoshopte scenes van de stad inhouden waren zo overtuigend dat ze me direct tot het lezen hebben aangezet, zodra ik de graphic novel onder ogen kreeg. Het behoort alvast tot mijn vaste aanraders voor een rustige zondagochtend.
Camille Rose Garcia brengt Low brow art van de bovenste plank. Haar creepy sprookjesboeken zijn telkens weer een schot in de roos. Alvast een dikke aanrader.

Dit is zo één van die trades van DC waarbij je zo goed als geen voorkennis nodig hebt. Mijn interesse voor de onbekendere DC heroes werd eigenlijk gewekt door Identity Crisis, (niet te verwarren met Infinty Crisis). Deze trade is hierop een mooie aanvulling en een extra verkoopsargument is dat er grote namen aan meewerkten. Het moest eigenlijk een tegenwicht bieden aan Civil War. DC revampte zo de wekelijkse comics into a succes story, met Countdown als opvolger. Momenteel is enkel volume 1 uit, deel 2 is voor één dezer weken.
