Haughton Mifflin published an annual collection
of The Best American Comics, the most recent selected
by Chris Ware, and last year published Alison Bechdel's
Fun Home.
They seem to be a real player in the graphic
novel market. If they have a house style, I can't see
it. However, as they publish more, I wonder if they
will develop loyal fans, such as those earned by Drawn
& Quarterly, Top Shelf and Fantagraphics.
Come on let's screw it One More Time euh Day & let's do it
all over again with "A brand new Day".
I don't know what they are doing? But
I'm giving up. We had the Clone stuff, May & Mary-Jane
died, fake parents and now ... ???
What Straczynski was doing, was great.
Certainly at the beginning. But now ...
Falling into a trap by the SS in Nazi Germany, twelve superheroes
are frozen to become lab animals, to be dissected at the hands
of German scientists. But the World War ends in defeat for
Hitler and twelve heroes remain trapped in their frozen states
until they are recovered in the morally gray world of the
21st century.
The Twelve is told from the perspective of the Phantom Reporter,
one of the heroes without power except for true grit and determination.
It is a tried and tested method for telling a story and it
is one Straczynski relies on a lot. The first person narration
lets us glimpse inside the heroes world and the way they
relate to each other. It all stays very descriptive though
and beyond some general characterizations, we learn nothing
much about any of these characters, the backstory takes precedence.
Hopefully this will change into a more character driven storyline
because that seems to be where the real story could lay. However
this is a first issue and things need to be put in place before
we can start the real story of this twelve issue miniseries.
Broken Frontier presents the nominees for our fourth annual

What, really, can be said about The Boys? The title continues
on its well laid out path of violence, sex, and political
corruption. There are more than a few funny bits here such
as Vass superhero name and the way Ennis uses the character
to turn the comic book staple of sexualizing female characters
on its head but Enniss tale is still violent, gritty and
cynical. One redeeming factor is that readers once again get
to see Hughie as probably the most balanced member of the
team. He is not violent for its own sake and takes no pleasure
in being a figure of terror. With the political complexity
of this entire story arc, however, unless you have been reading
this from the start then you will likely find yourself completely
lost.
The art by Darick Robertson is also of the comic book realism
style, which renders some of the more violent scenes well
violent. He obviously, however, has a ball depicting all of
the different characters with their vast range of faces, body
types, and characteristics.
The humor here ranges from dark to sophomoric, the tone is
bitterly cynical, and "justice" depends on your point of view
and level of violence. While The Boys has its place and its
voice in the comic medium it is an acquired taste. For those
who like their heroes on the anti-heroic side and for those
who enjoy humor that has a bit of a knife thrust to it then
there will be something here for them.

Zo zenden de grote Amerikaanse tv-netwerken hun populaire series sinds
kort ook via het internet uit, maar kunnen ze de dienst niet aan
Europese kijkers aanbieden omdat ze alleen over de uitzendrechten voor
de VS beschikken. Wie als Belg probeert te kijken krijgt dus al snel
het deksel op de neus. Tenzij u zich met een programma als Hotspot Shield virtueel naar de VS verplaatst.
Dat u met Hotspot Shield een Amerikaans IP adres krijgt en dus als
Amerikaanse surfer beschouwd wordt, is eerder een prettig
bijverschijnsel van de kerntaak van de software. Het programma dient
immers om een beveiligde omgeving te scheppen wanneer u gebruik maakt
van een internet-hotspot. Door uw verbinding via een zogenaamd Virtual
Private Network (VPN) om te leiden en te coderen voorkomt de software
dat hackers uw mail, wachtwoorden en kredietkaartgegevens kunnen
onderscheppen. Die omleiding loopt echter steeds via de VS.
Zodra u het programma start belandt u op een website waar u op de
groene knop Run Hotspot Shield klikt. Enkele tellen later bent u de
bezitter van een nieuw VPN IP-adres en kunt u net als iedere
Amerikaan moeiteloos de nieuwste series bekijken op videosites als Fancast, Innertube en OPENhulu.com. Ook de muzieksite Pandora.com - die belooft alleen uw smaak te spelen - gaat plots opnieuw open. Hotspot Shield is beschikbaar voor Windows en Mac OS X.
Al een tijdje volg ik onbewust het werk van schrijfster Gail Simone.
Het begon allemaal met de tv-serie "Birds of Prey". Het was toen nog in mijn soap-junk-periode, toen ik via allerlei download pragramma's massaal tv-series binnenhaalde en ze één voor één verorberde. Lang heeft de serie het niet vol gehouden. Ze werd na één season al gecancelled. Een beetje onterecht, there's worse shit on the telly, maar ja ...
Op die manier ben ik de comic-reeks "Birds of Prey" beginnen te volgen en zodoende leerde ik het werk van Gail Simone kennen. Het is een leuke en entertainende run met de gebruikelijke hoogtes en laagtes. Niets echt speciaal. Zelfs haar ander werk zoals Gen13, zijn leuke series maar nooit echt om het van de daken te roepen. (Q = 65%) Het feit dat een vrouw, spandex avonturen voor een dominerend mannelijk publiek, vind ik bewonderingswaardig en een plaatsje op mijn bescheiden blog waard. Opletten met sexisme & wat ik zeg is de boodschap want ze heeft een hele hoop stevige en trouwe fans. Bij deze behoed ik me al voor een mail-box vol verscheurde BH's (ipv boze nootjes, is al wat leuker om te krijgen, me dunkt) ;o)
Nu echter: Welcome to Tranquility steekt er met kop en schoulders boven uit. Ook al had ik in het begin het gevoel dat Gail met enthousiasme de reeks "Eureka" gezien had, geen enkel moment hield het me tegen met verder lezen. Tanquility, een stad vol met bejaarde superhelden, wiens ontstaan eigenlijk de clue vormt van het eerste deel. Een ganse hoop nostalgie, typische american sub-urb setting (Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky-tacky..., and they all look the same - Malvina Reynolds), een uitgebreide waaier van hedendaagse en golden-age superheroes, een moord & een pak intriges ... meer moet een mens niet hebben.
Volgens mij een dikke aanrader !!

Best known for penning DC's Birds of Prey, she is the writer of Welcome to Tranquility and All-New Atom and recently became the first female ongoing writer for Wonder Woman. Simone is also the writer of DC's 2005 Villains United limited series (part of the lead-in to Infinite Crisis), and its spin-off, the limited series Secret Six. Other work by Simone includes a run on the Superman title Action Comics, a brief stint on The Legion, and a Rose and Thorn limited series at DC Comics. Chris Ware stays top of the bill, not
only with his deep writings but certainly for his astounding
art.
Set in a Chicago apartment building more
or less in the year 2000, the stories move from the
straightforward to the complex, invading character's
memories and personal ambitions with a text point size
likely unreadable to human beings over the age of 45.
One of the unknown revelations in 2007.
It reminded me of the television series Eureka combined
with a nicely done who-dunnit.
Tranquility is a small town like any other,
except for one difference: It's the place where super-powered
beings go to retire from crimefighting. But when the
town is turned upside down by a murder, it becomes evident
that everything isn't as quaint as it seems!
This one-shot trade / graphic novel needs
to be in every comic collection for those rainy sundays
!!
In documenting the plight of the lions,
PRIDE OF BAGHDAD raises questions about the true meaning
of liberation - can it be given, or is it earned only
through self-determination and sacrifice? And in the
end, is it truly better to die free than to live in
captivity?
Deze week komt de horrorfilm 30 Days
Of Night in de vlaamse bioscopen. Naar aanleiding hiervan
een bespreking van het boek dat hiervoor de basis vormde.
Oorspronkelijk was het een nooit verkocht filmscript
maar als strip werd dit de doorbraak van Steve Niles
alsook voor tekenaar Ben Templesmith. Uiteindelijk kregen
ze een miljoen dollar voor de filmrechten.
Talking to My Boy, Olivier Schrauwen

Every two years in Belgium, the largest Belgian comics festival
takes place in the tiny city of Turnhout. Broken Frontier
was there and spoke to Olivier Schrauwen, famed creator of
My boy who received the price for Best Debut. Graduated at
the Academy of Art in Ghent, he has reached the ripe old age
of thirty and displays a very sober outlook on life, displaying
a keen eye for human behaviour, very apparent in his comics.
Broken Frontier: A nomination at one of the worlds largest
comic festivals,, the price for Best Debut at the largest
Belgian comic festival, Strip Turnhout, numerous praise in
the international press. They are all very fine accolades
from the comics world but does it also open new doors for
you?
Olivier Schrauwen: I laboured a long time on My boy and the
only thing that kept me busy during that period was finishing
my comic. What would come after the finalisation of that project
never crossed my mind. The fact that the comic is receiced
in such a grand manor totally flabbergasted me and the for
my norms, anyway out-of-proportion attention it accumulates
in the media, I find that to be very funny.
Remember earlier when there was more leeway when it came
to sales on Vertigo titles? This is true but they are not
immune from cancellation. This series is selling about as
much as the recently cancelled American Virgin and more than
the about-to-be-restarted-at-a-new-number-one Army @ Love.
So Scalped is definitely on the chopping block, and it really
doesnt deserve to be. It is one of the best books to ever
wear the Vertigo imprint, and that is saying a lot.
It tells the story of Dashiell Red Horse, a bad seed who
returns to the Indian reservation where he was born looking
for trouble. He hooks up with Chief Lincoln Red Crow, the
man who controls almost everything in the reservation. He
places Red Horse on the tribal police force to act as his
personal enforcer in order to help clean up the reservation
in preparation for the opening of a brand new casino. But
Red Horse is secretly an undercover FBI agent, set to bring
Red Crow to justice for killing two FBI agents 30 years in
the past.
The comic is equal parts Sopranos, Wiseguy and The Departed.
There is a reason why Scalped writer Jason Aaron is getting
high-profile work at Marvel and Top Cow. Because Joe Quesada
and Mark Silvestri know how great a writer he is. You should
pick up this series and find out for yourself.
Comics are dominating Hollywood & his writers.

As a writer I am repped by one of the major talent agencies
in the film/TV industry. Outside of my work as a comic writer,
I also develop television and film projects in both the scripted
and reality universes. This was my dream as a kid growing
up in my small Massachusetts town and I still need to pinch
myself on a regular basis to make sure Im not asleep, or
worse yet, dead. Whats interesting to me now however is the
way the comic industry is affecting the entertainment industry
as a whole. The more popular it becomes the more Hollywood
tries to adapt to cater to it.
Nowadays screenplay writers are being pushed by their representation
to turn their ideas into graphic novels as opposed to going
straight to script. In the last two weeks alone I have met
with more than a dozen established industry writers who have
worked on everything from Seinfeld to major motion pictures
simply because their agents and managers can sell their ideas
more easily if they have the visual to go along with it. This
is the new Hollywood standard package an intellectual property
in book form and reap the benefits on the backend. Its become
so popular, that talent agencies across the board are establishing
comic book/graphic novel divisions at their firms.
Bij deze denk ik dat ik mijn reputatie, al dan niet goed of slecht, regelrecht de grond ga in boren maar ... Het moet toch echt van lippen, ik vond die run van Greg Rucka on Wonder Woman echt goed !
In gans mijn comic-carrière die reeds vroeg startte, ben ik nooit verder geraakt dan 3 issues van John Byrne. Heb ik al acht keer de run van George Pérez willen starten, heb ik als 10-jarige misschien 1 aflevering gezien op tv, maar nooit echt in de ban geraakt tot ... nu. Was het nu omdat wij op oudejaarsavond zot gedraaid op ons werk rustig naar de cinema wilden. Toen bleek zowel de Metropolis als UGC tot onze grote spijt gesloten te zijn. Bij gebrek aan iets deftig op de tv, besloot ik om WW eens te kans te geven. De doorslag was eerder Greg Rucka, na Checkmate. Soit, ik ben er nog altijd niet uit. Desalniettemin ben ik erin geslaagd om de 5 trades in één ruk uit te lezen. En ja, ik zit er helemaal in.
Wat een lijf heeft dat Wonder Wijf, hahaha ;)
Wat was er nu zo leuk ???
- Het feit dat WW over diezelfde (fl)air beschikt als Thor, maar toch iets moderner spreekt ?
- Dat met haar ambassade, er een stukje "West Wing" is ingekropen? - Dat womenizer Zeus een schop onder zijn kl...ten krijgt van een vrouw? - Het gekraak van een gebroken nek? - Dat die Amazones, lekkere wijven zijn? - K3 vermomd als Wonder Woman, Athena en Artemis? - Al die intriges, geouwehoer, incest ("Sister-wive" ?? ) en zo van die toestanden. - Dat WW echt van haar pied-de-stalleke valt (fall from grace). Het is altijd leuk om een hero te zien wegglijden in de miserie. - Dat het recht altijd zege viert ... (Eigenlijk te Amerikaans, liever een slecht einde maar dat is persoonlijke smaak).
Of dat Greg Rucka gewoonweg beestig kan schrijven en hopelijk eens de kans krijgt om een top reeks te schrijven voor Marvel of DC. Het liefst van al, wens ik hem en al zijn fans voor 2008 een killer reeks bij Vertigo toe !!
Voor de SM-fans, de trade voor eenzame winteravonden, WONDER WOMAN THE HIKETEIA SC Laat de cover tot U spreken ...
het is al alweer een tijdje geleden, de
Antwerpse boekenbeurs.
Toch wil ik jullie volgende anecdote niet
onthouden.
Zoals veel verzamelaars trek ik naar de
boekenbeurs met maar één doel voor ogen:
striptekenaars strikken voor een
tekeningetje. Of nog beter:
een uitgebreide tekening met alle
hoofdpersonages. In kleur. Op groot formaat.
Per slot van rekening leven al die
verwaande kwasten dankzij onze portemonee . Die van de
verzamelaars.
Dus ze mogen wel wat terug
doen.
Nu moet ik zeggen dat ik geen hoge pet
opheb van de 'Vloamsche' tekenaartjes.
Het zijn allemaal , stuk voor stuk,
broodtekenaartjes met weinig talent en
een ego van hier tot in Wallonie. (Maar
daar raken ze wel niet gepubliceerd)
Maar goed, ik dan maar aanschuiven bij de
minst slechte, Jan Bosschaert.
'Jaguar' was niet echt slecht getekend.
Ik snap er geen bal van, maar kom, er zijn slechter getekende
strips.
Ik sta dus anderhalf uur aan te schuiven.
Want Bosch neemt er zijn tijd van. Vooral als er mooie jonge deernes
aanschuiven.
Gelukkig zijn dat er niet veel. Qua
uiterlijk lijkt Bosschaert immers meer op Joop Klepzeiker dan op
Tarzan.
Goed, ik maar wachten...Staat er daar ene
voor mij met een seksboekje. Of Bosch 'Sam' in dezelfde houding wil
tekenen zoals dit meisje in de 'Mayfair'.
Bosch weigert. De man wordt lichtjes boos
en zegt dat Bosch zijn 'Verfrommelingskes' vol met blote wijven
staan.
Waarom Sam dan niet in haar blote
kont?
Zegt Bosch ernstig: 'Meneer, Sam is mijn
dochter. Die teken ik niet naakt.'
'Uw dochter? Jij hebt helemaal geen
dochter!' weerlegt de ander.
'Mijn papieren dochter' zegt
Bosch.
De man druipt woedend af.
En dan was het dus aan mij. 'Sam graag'
zeg ik.
'Met kleren aan' gooi ik er voorzichtig
achteraan.
Ik moet zeggen dan meneer Bosschaert zijn
uiterste best heeft gedaan voor mij. Een bijzonder mooie tekening.
Hij heeft er werk van gemaakt.
Het kan ook komen omdat er niemand meer
achter mij stond. Al de andere aanschuivenden waren gevlucht omdat ze dachten
dat er ging gevochten worden toen mijn voorganger aan de beurt was.
Goed... De oogst was binnen...Tijd voor
een paar Duveltjes.
En daarna dus naar het toilet.
40 cent kost dat dus. Ik met tegenzin
betaald, voor een kleine boodschap vind ik dat duur.
Ik heb altijd al gevonden dat die
toiletdames een onderscheid zouden moeten maken tussen kleine en grote
boodschappen. Maar goed, we dwalen af.
Plots zie ik Mark Eyskens de toiletten
binnenwandelen.
Hij wil betalen, zoals het hoort. Maar de
toiletdame zegt dat het niet nodig is.
'Het is een eer om u te mogen ontvangen
in mijn bescheiden toilet' zegt ze, terwijl ze een lichte buiging
maakt.
En waarempel, ze neemt ook nog een
welriekende spuitbus en spuit even boven de pisbak waar Eyskens
plaatsneemt.
Ik stel me te plassen naast hem. Het valt
me op dat meneer Eyskens staat te fluiten terwijl hij plast.
En, hoe gaat het, meneer Eyskens?' zeg
ik.
'Ach, weet je, mijn
prostaat...'
'Nee, dat bedoel ik niet, kunt u zich een
beetje amuseren op de boekenbeurs, meneer Eyskens?'
'Ik zie dit bezoek meer als een
verplichting' antwoordt hij.
'Leest u ook strips?' wil ik
weten.
'Ja, Dinges,... Kiekeboe lees ik wel
eens. Die Leemans maakt er wel wat van'.
Het is me meteen duidelijk dat ik niet
moet beginnen over Miller, Gaiman, Crumb of Alan Moore. Eyskens heeft daar nog nooit
van gehoord en het interesseert hem ook niet. Maar
soms leest hij Kiekeboe. Van Leemans dus. Zucht...
Nu weet iedereen, dat de pisbakken van de
boekenbeurs niet deugen. Ik heb het altijd al vervelend gevonden dat
die tussenschutten veel te laag zijn. Ik vind
het niet leuk dat mijn buurman kan zien hoe ik geschapen ben.
Anderzijds was dit voor mij een unieke
kans om even iets 'meer' te zien van deze populaire politicus... Iets 'meer' dan
de doorsnee toeschouwer te zien
krijgt.
Maar goed, hierover wil ik niet verder
uitwijden. Ik heb teveel respect voor Mark Eyskens om verder te vertellen over
dit , toch wel, delicate onderwerp. Wat ik gezien heb hou ik voor mezelf. Want
ik vind Mark Eyskens een GROOT man. Een ZEER GROOT man.
Ondertussen was Jan Bosschaert de
toiletten binnengestapt. Grote boodschap. Ik vind het niet eerlijk dat ook hij
maar 40 cent moest betalen. Ik moest 40 cent betalen voor een KLEINE boodschap.
Sommigen hebben ALLE geluk!
Maar goed, Bosch stapt het toilet binnen.
Heel voorzichtig komt de viespeuk van het seksboekje hem achterna.
De man heeft een GSM-filmcameraatje in de
hand.
Hij staat buiten het toilet te filmen
waar Bosschaert inzit.
Een paar minuten later stapt die dus
nietsvermoedend buiten en hij heeft niet eens gemerkt dat hij gefilmd
werd.
'Hahaha! Ik heb hem!' Zegt de pervert
'Vanavond staat hij op YouTube!'
'Kun je je voorstellen hoe de fans gaan
opkijken? Eerst zien ze een toilet langs buiten... Ze horen duidelijk dat er ene
aan het sch... is! En dan zien ze Bosschaert buitenkomen!!!!! Hahaha! Ze gaan
opkijken!!!!'
'Pas op' zegt de man nog 'ik ben een
integer mens! Ik zou die geluiden kunnen versterken voor YouTube!
Ik zou er de geluiden van een olifant op
kunnen zetten! Maar ik ga dat niet doen!'
En luid lachend ging hij er
vandoor...
Ik vond het allemaal wel grappig. Het
leek zowaar een aflevering van 'De Verfrommelingskes'!
De Antwerpse boekenbeurs...Er is altijd
wel wat te beleven!
In the Ultimate Marvel Universe, a teenage

away as a child, his father is wrongly imprisoned for
murder, Tony himself suffers from a cellular disability
that can be fatal, and, most recently, a boat full of
terrorists blew up in a botched hostage-rescue attempt.
Needless to say, life for Tony is complicated, and finally,
after two years of waiting, the Ultimate Iron Man saga
continues.
Whats more life-altering than becoming
one of DCs new New Gods? More exciting than shooting
aliens in outer space after a round of binge drinking
with Heath Huston? More awe-inspiring than making national
television by designing a Mary Jane cleavage-shot statue?

Marvel maakt het de fans van Amazing Spider-Man
niet gemakkelijk. Sinds de verhaallijn van New Avengers,
de tiende bundel, is er geen nieuwe bundel meer geweest
maar dat wil niet zeggen dat Spidey met verlof was.
Spent. Joe Matt. Drawn and Quarterly, 2007. I banged into
the neighborhood comics shop last night, announcing, "I'm
looking for a comic book by Joe Matt. I don't know the title.
All I know is that it starts with an S." This shop shelves
alphabetically by title. The clerk's face glazed over, and
so I said hopefully, "I guess I'll just go through all the
S's, hoping I can find it?" "Yeah, that's about all we can
do," he replied. He pretended to help me for a bit, and then
went back to surfing at DC's website. I found Spent, pounced,
and took it up to the desk. Holding it up so he could see
the cover, I gleefully announced, in a loud, clear voice,
"Isn't this great! This is exactly how I look at the end of
the day!"
I'm a naughty, wicked woman. I know.
T he thing is, I'm comfortable with sex. I really enjoy sexual
expression. I'm not going to hate a graphic memoir because
it's about a porn addict.
It's more likely that I'll hate a graphic memoir because it's
a graphic memoir. Crumb, Pekar, Spiegelman, and Satrapi aside,
I really believe that by default, comics artists should avoid
writing graphic memoirs. (Come to think of it, we could do
with less prose memoirs, too.) So I was prepared to loathe
Spent.
Joe Matt was prepared for me to loathe it, too. In the cruel
tirade he aims at himself as he paces his tiny dump of a room,
he imagines what his disappointed readers will say. "He has
no self-awareness or insight," they'll say and they'll be
right.
Tale as old as time: artist working as a professional in
the field (in this case animation), reaches peak of creative
frustration, seeks to produce a product artistically under
his control, and so naturally turns to self-published comics.
Refurbishing his favorite ideas culled from an earlier, more
casually self-made work (in this case, a comic called Eclectic
Café ), artist gets to work on producing his first honest-to-goodness
masterpiece.
Masterpiece receives all due critical recognition, winning
a Xeric Grant in the year 2000 and managing a steady seven-issue
run, all carried by Diamond Distributors, all heralded by
fans and industry pros alike, until, as with most self-published
gems, life puts a kibosh on artists financial situation.
Self-published comic gets shelved. Artist continues to work
in animation. Artist continues to draw comic, though no longer
published. For years, nothing more is heard.
Then: artists gets second chance in the form of a Prince
Edward Island grant to finish book. Artist prints 100 copies
and sends them to publisher and professional alike. Publishers
proceed to lose all copies in the mail. Professionals read
the work and rave about it online, including one particularly
persuasive professional named Dave Sim. Sims online hurrahs
catch the attention of IDWs President, Ted Adams, who asks
artist to send him a copy, as he never got the chance to read
the last copy, as it was lost in the mail. Adams enjoys book
very much. Artist get work published by IDW, a big enough
name in publishing that now articles like this are written
about it. The work and the bona fide artiste in question?
This issue is the last issue of the Incredible Hulk. It is
also the first issue of the Incredible Herc. Confused? Dont
be. After the events of World War Hulk, everyones favorite
green-skinned monster is presumably gone forever. Since it
is hard to have a Hulk book without there being a Hulk (unless
you create a red Hulk for the occasion, more on that next
month), the focus of the book shifts to the Jade Giants fellow
Avenger and frequent sparring partner, Hercules. Hercules,
and the teen genius Amadeus Cho, are in big trouble for the
aid they gave Old Greenskin during his invasion. Their only
choice? To start running. But S.H.I.E.L.D. doesnt intend
to let them off the hook. The result? A swath of destruction
across the U.S.A. and a hard-travelling adventure for our
heroes.
Een van de meest onderschatte stripgenieen is ongetwijfeld Jay
Faeber.
Hij is al jarenlang de schrijver van
'Noble Causes' en sedert vorig jaar
heeft hij ook een nieuwe reeks 'Dynamo
5'.
Vernieuwend, amusant, sexy dames en
wreedaardige aliens .... 'Dynamo 5' heeft het allemaal.
Er is een eerste bundel beschikbaar.
'Post Nuclear Family' kost minder dan 10 dollar en
is een perfecte kennismaking met het werk
van Faerber. Een aanrader!
Van de Manga 'Old Boy' zijn ondertussen reeds 8 delen beschikbaar.
Ik ben er nu pas aan begonnen. Ik had de
slechte Amerikaanse filmversie gezien (met oa Bob Hoskins) en was niet meteen
een fan.
De strip is gelukkig VEEEEL beter dan de
(Amerikaanse) film.
Ik heb ondertussen 4 delen gelezen van
deze zeer gezellige Manga en tot nu toe heeft film en strip zeer weinig met
elkaar te maken. De Manga is bijzonder mooi getekend. Doet Europees
aan.
Voor wie het Frans meester is, is er nu ook een heel mooi boek uit van Osamu
Tezuka.
'BlackJack'nummer nul (Asuka) is de
zoveelste herdruk, maar nu wel in hardcover, op degelijk formaat en met
prachtige steunkleuren.
Het oogt bijzonder nostalgisch. Het lijkt
wel lasof deze strips uit 'Het Kapoentje' geplukt zijn,
het stripbijvoegsel van de krant 'Het
Volk' (zestiger jaren).
De mislukte kans van de week is ongetwijfeld voor 'Slaapkoppen' van Randall. C

Een deel van het boek is eerder
gepubliceerd in 'Hic Sunt Leones 2' van Bries.
De rest is iets haastiger getekend, maar
oogt toch schitterend. Ontzettens mooi en sfeervol.
Op het binnenblad wordt verwezen naar
Carlos Castaneda, Patricia Garfield en zowaar Lewis Carroll.
Je zou je in slechter gezelschap kunnen
bevinden!
Helaas is het scenario van deze strip
niet van bovenstaand niveau.
Het enige woord dat ik bij deze
onsamenhangende verhalenbundel kan verzinnen is ZEVER.
Waarschijnlijk zal dit boek bijzonder
geprezen worden door stripjournalisten.
De tekeningen zijn fantastisch. Zoveel is
zeker. De verhaaltjes slaan op niks.
Met de juiste scenarist kan deze tekenaar
het ver schoppen. Maar dit is een mislukte kans.
Nog even een bijzondere, moeilijk verkrijgbare Manga vermelden: Tapenshu - 2
delen (Dark Horse)
Wie van Hiroki Endo's andere reeks Eeden
houdt zal deze kortverhaaltjes zeker op prijs stellen.
Na lang zeuren en zagen heb ik hem eindelijk kunnen overtuigen om zijn ongezouten mening via mijn blog de wereld in te sturen. Graag stel ik u voor 'Modest Van Drogenbroeck'. In de strip & comics wereld gaat zijn naam rond als DE REFERENTIE waarop veel winkeliers en uitgevers hun verkoopspraatje en persoonlijke mening aan spiegelen !! Van golden age tot nu, van strips, comics, manga & films niets is hem onbekend. Hij is gewoonweg een wereldberoemd instituut. Iedereen, van uitgever tot tekenaar & senarist kent hem als een zeer gewaardeerd verzamelaar, kenner & ... maar ook als iemand die totaal geen blad voor zijn mond heeft. We geven daarom ruimschoots toe, dat zijn publicaties tot controverse zullen leiden met alle gevolgen van dien.

Fightin with Space Ninja's & Alien Highrisk Food Ingredients ???
Ok, het is genoeg bewezen dat gemiddelde comicslezer een abnormale kronkel in hun hoofd hebben zitten. Hoe zit het dan met schrijvers ??? Wat voor een weirde kronkel moeten die wel niet hebben ??? Alhoewel ... Iedereen heeft allicht in zijn vrijgezellenbestaan welleens geworsteld met de recepten en de ingrediënten uit de Kookboek v/d boerinnenbond. Ik ben de eerste om dat toe te geven. James Stokoe combineert dit met een levendige "Calvin & Hobbes" fantasie, een beetje manga style Iron Wok Stuff en dit allemaal in een vleugje space-opera saus.

Het verhaal start met een paar losse intro om dan langzaam naar het einde toe toch een mooi geheel te vormen. Het artwork vind ik echt subliem en hielp mij als ruggensteun om verder te lezen. In het begin wist ik echt niet wat ermee aan te vangen. Op zulke momenten weet ik stiekem wel na al die jaren dat het echt de moeite loont om verder te lezen. Zo ook hier !! Laat u volledig wegglijden en Enjoy !!
Ik kreeg deze tekening als onderdeel van een nieuwsbrief in mijn mailbox. De stijl viel me direct op, ben nu eigenlijk wel benieuwd van wiens hand deze illustratie is. Weet je het ??? Posten maar ...

Ik kreeg een leuke reactie in mijn inbox op de review van "Checkmate - Greg Rucka", die ik graag met jullie had willen delen.
"De nieuwe checkmate is inderdaad zeer goed, ik was
lichtjes teleurgesteld bij het verdwijnen van Alan Scot als "White king" (dat
ooglapje maakt het af), maar hij was eigenlijk te clean voor checkmate (wat het
natuurlijk wel juist interessant maakt om een "straight hero" in zo'n
schaduworganisatie te hebben). Zijn vervanger mag er echter ook zijn! Screw de
black panther, geef mij maar mr. terrifc! Het is wel opvallend hoe de figuur van
Amanda Waller over 20 jaar is geevolueerd, van niet-onsympathieke hardcase
working black mom in de originele suicide squad, tot de biggest bitch in comics today. Being a secretary under the luthor administration sure does wonders for your image. Wees gerust, er
vallen nog een paar "bommen". De originele checkmate vind ik trouwens niet te
zuipen. Waren een paar crossovers met de suicide squad, maar in die tijd was
checkmate de human agency terwijl enkel de squad de meta's had, zodat die
veredelde james bond figuren van checkmate (of nick fury rips) maar schraal
overkwamen."
On a dutch comic forum "Spock"
advised people to read this Masterpiece! I loved it
right away! This massive tome is a page-turner you won't
be able to put down, and prove that these brothers are
a pair to watch!
A hard pace, black satirical graphic
novel !! It came from a time when side-kicks ruled the
comic universe. Now, at last, the notorious graphic
novel that made the mainstream safe for totally twisted
superhero satires is available in a new KING HELL trade
paperback edition!
Christos Gage is worth the attention
!! Now on an nostalgic tour a major brawl between original
Stormwatch members and the ever daring Autorithy.
Brian Wood, activist extraordinaire, has again put his online
skills to the test in promoting his latest series Northlanders
. He performed as a guest blogger at News@rama, deals out
interviews left and right, sets up a mini-site, a myspace
page and actively pursues reviews by giving a select club
of online reviewers advance previews in order to build up
momentum until the actual release of the comic. Many a creator
can learn something from his websavvy and grass roots approach
to things.
An unfortunate side effect of this approach though is that
the apotheosis of release can end in a downer when the comic
doesn't live up to expectations. The artwork from the mini-site
promises a more daring visual approach than the comic actually
delivers. Instead of an illustrative drawing style, Northlanders
is drawn by Davide Gianfelice who uses a more modern style
of drawing, not unlike fellow Italian artist Giuseppe Camuncoli.
It's nice work but unspectacular. Everything is scratchy and
delineated, sparse on blacks and crosshatching and very angular.
What a more illustrative artist brings out in the reader is
more of a feeling of awe. A sort of wonderment that captivates
the reader and involves him in the characters and setting
(which is as much a character here as the persons walking
around in it). There is a closeness to nature-feeling going
on that seems to reverberate of the pathos formula. And the
stylings of Gianfelice just can't seem to captivate that feeling
in Northlanders . Maybe it could be just as simple as saying,
that - for a straight adventure story involving Vikings -
his style is just too modern. When Vikings become less exciting
on paper due to the drawings, than something is off, though.
Critics of the most recent arc in Robert Kirkmans massive
Walking Dead saga complained that too little happened to further
the plot and terror and action were replaced with character
development. Very telling was the title of that arc, The Calm
Before, as this current one erupted two issues ago when the
Governor, the man who brutally tortured Rick, Michonne and
Glenn, arrived at the gates of the prison with a sizable attack
force and even a fully functioning tank.
This issue is one of the most action-packed 22 pages Kirkman
has yet to produce in a zombie book that doesnt feature Spider-Man
feasting on Galactus. And while this series usually works
best when emphasizing character interactions over zombie attacks,
the long build up serves perfectly to whet our appetites for
the waves of destruction brought on by the Governor and his
forces. The battle unfolds realistically and characters react
the way youd expect them to. This isnt a superhero book
and Kirkman doesnt make his characters out to be heroes.
They simply cower on the ground while the Governor opens fire.
The fight isnt as one-sided as the cover would lead you to
believe, however, as Rick and the gang do find a way to strike
back before the issues shocking end.
Het is me wel wat geweest de laatste dagen, heel veel goed nieuws en
nieuwe uitdagingen gevonden. En bovenal eindelijk nog eens een ijzersterke
reeks gelezen !! Maar wat blijkt nu ?? Er heerst een echte hype ; ) Ik
ben niet de enige die in de ban is van spionage verhalen !! Tijdens het
schrijven van deze review bots ik juist op een review van Brainfreeze,
ook al over een spionagereeks. Moet natuurlijk weer lukken !!
Checkmate is één van die vele series die men niet goed
naar waarde geschat wordt en daarmee gedoemd is vroegtijdig te eindigen.
De schrijver Greg Rucka kennen van zijn eigen serie "Queen & Country",
"Gotham Central" in samenwerking met Ed Brubaker en "Batman:
Bruce Wayne Murderer".
De opzet is eigenlijk éénvoudig. Enerzijds heb je de witte
schaakstukken die het politieke gedeelte voor hun rekening nemen en anderzijds
heb je de zwarte schaakstukken die overgaan tot actie. Voor elke superhero
heb je een regular human tegenhanger.
Al gauw blijkt dat er aan deze serie reeds een grote voorgeschiedenis aan
vasthangt en die zorgt ervoor dat telkens je honger naar informatie gestild
geraakt er wel wat nieuws opduikt.
Rucka vertelde dit over zijn serie: "Take a big chunk of The OMAC Project,
take the concept of "Who Watches the Watchmen?" and throw in some James
Bond and you've got Checkmate."
Wat je nog allemaal moet of kunt lezen, is me nog niet helemaal duidelijk.
Voor zover ik het begrijp, is het een voortzetting van Wonder Woman: Mission's
End, The
OMAC Project, Superman: Sacrifice and Infinite Crisis. (Bij deze weet
ik weeral wat te bestellen.) But hey, I've got a hang for it and I want
to discover more !!
Het is een tijdje stil geweest met bespreking van comics. Dit is volledig te wijten aan de automatisering van de comic-preorders via een excel lijst en het integreren van de preorders binnen de shop. Nu zou ik terug meer tijd moeten hebben om op een regelmatige basis rescensies, tips of voor sommigen gezwets neer te poten.
Om eens te breken met de traditie van postieve posts eindelijk ook is iets "teleurstellend".
Na een schitterende start met "Wolverine: Origin" tracht Marvel dit succes door te trekken met "Wolverine: Origins". Let op "Tracht". Ok, Wolverine rules maar "hoge bomen vangen veel wind". Aan het hoge tempo waarmee hij in talrijke series verschijnt, daarover wil ik het zelfs hier niet over hebben, krijgt hij nog 2 eigen reeksen. Gelukkig dat hij met healingsfactor geen last kan krijgen van burn-out.. Ik wou het eerder hebben over de lage kwaliteit van sommige verhalen. Daniel Way heeft nochthans duidelijk in het verleden bewezen kwalitatieve verhalen te kunnen produceren. Eigenlijk had ik stiekem gehoopt dat het hier om een verderzetting ging van de mini-serie.

Het derde deel vertelt dus over NOG een kind van Wolvie, deze keer een jongen met hevige daddy-issues, die nog getrained werd door Cyber, een adamantium nutcase met diepe haatgevoelens. In tegenstelling tot zijn dochter X-23 deed dit character mij niets. Het is vooral dit deel dat echt teleurstellend overkwam. Niets weerhoudt jullie ervan om deze mening aan te vechten.
Laten we hopen dat het volgende deel onze favoriete held weer op juiste spoor kan zetten !! Alvast een voorproefje:

"Marvel is putting some of its older comics online Tuesday, hoping to
reintroduce young people to the X-Men and Fantastic Four by showcasing
the original issues in which such characters appeared.
Still, it represents perhaps
the comics industry's most aggressive Web push yet. Even as their
creations -- from Iron Man to Wonder Woman -- become increasingly
visible in pop culture through new movies and video games, old-school
comics publishers rely primarily on specialized, out-of-the-way comic
shops for distribution of their bread-and-butter product.
"You don't have that spinner rack of comic books sitting in the
local five-and-dime any more," said Dan Buckley, president of Marvel
Publishing. "We don't have our product intersecting kids in their
lifestyle space as much as we used to."
Translate "kids' lifestyle space" into plain English and you get
"the Internet." Marvel's two most prominent competitors currently offer
online teasers designed to drive the sales of comics or book
collections.
Dark Horse Comics now puts its
monthly anthologies "Dark Horse Presents" up for free viewing on its
MySpace site. The images are vibrant and large.
DC Comics has also put issues up on MySpace, and recently launched
the competition-based Zuda Comics, which encourages users to rank each
other's work, as a way to tap into the expanding Web comic scene.
Company president Paul Levitz said he expects to put more original
comics online in coming years.
"We look at anything that connects comics to people," Levitz said.
"The most interesting thing about the online world to me is the
opportunity for new forms of creativity. ... It's a question of what
forms of storytelling work for the Web?"
For its mature Vertigo imprint, DC offers weekly sneak peeks at the
first five or six pages of upcoming issues. The publisher also gives
out downloadable PDF files of the first issues in certain series, timed
to publication of the series in book or graphic novel format.
The Web release of DC's "Y the Last Man" sent sales of that book
collection soaring at Bridge City Comics in Portland, Ore., the shop's
owner Michael Ring said.
"They really do tend to be feeder systems," Ring said of online comics. "They give people that initial taste."
For Marvel, the general public has often already gotten its initial
taste through movies like "Spider-Man" or the "Fantastic Four"
franchises.
The publisher is hoping fans will be intrigued enough about the
origins of those characters to shell out $9.99 a month, or $4.99
monthly with a year-long commitment. For that price, they'll be able to
poke through, say, the first 100 issues of Stan Lee's 1963 creation
"Amazing Spider-Man" at their leisure, along with more recent titles
like "House of M" and "Young Avengers." Comics can be viewed in several
different formats, including frame-by-frame navigation.
Ring expects Marvel's effort to put a slight dent in the back-issue
segment of the comic shop industry, where rare, out-of-print titles
sell for hundreds of dollars on eBay and at trade shows.
Though most comic fans are collectors, some simply want to catch up
on the backstory of their favorite characters and would no longer have
to pay top dollar to do so.
About 2,500 issues will be available at launch of Marvel Digital Comics, with 20 more being released each week.

Als rasechte comic-junk, probeer ik zoveel en zo gedifferentieerd mogelijk te lezen. Sta me dan toe om weer eens te verwijzen naar Civil War. Deze keer naar de gebeurtenissen van de Fantastic Four. Zoals de meesten reeds gelezen hebben, stond Reed Richards mee met Tony Stark in het pro-kamp. Hij had er namelijk goede rede toe. Al jaren (maar dat weten nu maar pas) werkt hij in het geheim zijn ideeën uit. Speciaal daarvoor werd een thinktank-kamer in het leven geroepen. Een kamer waarvan de muren vol geschreven zijn met wetenschappelijke maatschappelijke kansberekingen. Wat ... ??? Maatschappelijk ??
Reeds Richards, de sience-nerd, altijd opgesloten in één of ander lab, nooit geen tijd vrouw of kinderen, in het bezit van de meest fantastische wapens (vandaar Mr. Fantastic ?) zoals oa de Nullifier, verdient zijn geld met patenten voor de Us Army. (Zekers in the Ultimate-verse) Plots blijkt hij in zijn studententijd ook mee bij te gedragen hebben tot het hippie gedachtegoed. Ok, hij en de rest van de FF, zijn echte Heroes en altijd rechtvaardig, hulpverlenend en ...
Dit is nu wat behoort tot de term, "charachter evolution". Eerlijk gezegd stond het ganse concept mij wel direct aan. Ik keek uit naar het effectief uitkomen van zijn voorspellingen en wat de schrijvers er allemaal mee van plan waren. En ja hoor, in FF#551 gaan ze er dieper op in. Benieuwd wat dat gaat geven ...?
Het wereldwijde web is voor sommige zaken vaak allesbehalve wereldwijd.
Zo zenden de grote Amerikaanse tv-netwerken hun populaire series sinds
kort ook via het internet uit, maar kunnen ze de dienst niet aan
Europese kijkers aanbieden omdat ze alleen over de uitzendrechten voor
de VS beschikken. Wie als Belg probeert te kijken krijgt dus al snel
het deksel op de neus. Tenzij u zich met een programma als
