Met enige trots mag ik u het nieuwste nummer van Aviculture Europe aankondigen.Onze doelstelling is nog steeds om internationaal een vriendenplatform te zijn van liefhebbers met dezelfde hobby. U kunt kennis nemen van de bijdragen die wij uit de hele wereld ontvangen en evengoed wordt hetgeen wij te melden hebben ook wereldwijd op prijs gesteld. Wanneer u die gedachte met ons deelt, dan kunt u ons steunen door uw redactionele bijdrage te leveren. Geef ons informatie over uw bijzondere vereniging of speciaalclub, is er een jubileum, heeft u ergens een mooie collectie dieren gezien of is u iets bijzonders opgevallen: wij hebben belangstelling!
Wees echter niet teleurgesteld als uw bijdrage niet direct geplaatst kan worden. Soms is er erg veel kopij, vooral in het showseizoen, wat deze keer resulteerde in een uitgave van bijna 150 paginas. Dat geeft echt teveel stress voor het Team.
Zolang het ons mogelijk is en wij het enthousiasme ervoor kunnen opbrengen, zal Aviculture Europe voor iedereen gratis beschikbaar blijven; iedere twee maanden met ong. 100 paginas. Inmiddels is het jaar 2012 al ruimschoots begonnen, maar omdat dit ons eerste nummer is in het nieuwe jaar, willen wij graag nog alle mensen bedanken die ons hun beste wensen stuurden voor het nieuwe jaar, en ook iedereen die we vergeten zijn, wensen wij hierbij van harte een gelukkig, voorspoedig en vooral gezond 2012 toe.

Wie vorig jaar de eerste editie van FUGARE bezocht heeft, herinnert zich zeker het grote aanbod van nationale en internationale aanbieders. De 2de editie van FUGARE, die plaatsvindt op 18 en 19 februari 2012 in Kortrijk Xpo, doet niet onder en belooft opnieuw een prachtig aanbod voor te stellen van meer dan 100 exposanten.
Maar FUGARE is niet enkel een beurs, ook dit jaar zijn er opnieuw tal van randactiviteiten waaronder een interessant forum waarin topduivenliefhebbers zoals Filip Norman, Xavier Verstraete en André Moonens hun geheimen prijsgeven. Net te missen is ook de presentatie van Dr. Vincent Schroeder op zondag. Daarnaast zijn er tal van uitreikingen, een duivenkeuring van BCK-CBJS en op zaterdagavond een heuse gala avond. FUGARE heeft ook oog voor de vrouw achter de duivenmelker. Op zaterdag wordt een gratis shuttledienst voorzien die de dames naar het winkelcentrum K in Kortrijk zal brengen (en terug natuurlijk).

The Dutch grandmaster of the long distance races! - Hans Dekkers, Hedikhuizen
The answer after raising the question "Who's the best long distance-racer in the Netherlands" is of course subject to debate. There's little doubt however that the purest evaluation of race results is the 'Fondspiegel' method. All points of the birds on the resultsheet are put together and divided by the number of birds entered in the race. There's no advantage or disadvantage if you send large or small numbers of pigeons to the races, it's the whole day result that counts. Real excellence is then easily unveiled from under the sometimes masked few early birds. From 2005 until 2010 there was a championship of this Fondspiegel, due to bankruptcy of the magazine NPOrgaan no calculations were made in 2011.
Hans Dekkers was in the top ten in all those years (three times first. There was a ranking too from 2006 onwards and it showed that Hans Dekkers was the only fancier who was in the top ten every year in the whole of Holland!
Besides that, the winner from Hedikhuizen also became 5th National long distance champion NPO in 2010 and 2nd in 2011. In the strong competition WHZB he became 9th and 3rd Best fancier respectively in the same two years. He was also superstar of the year - long distance in 2010 and second successor in the competition of the Gouden Duif Nederland. Then there was the first championship long distance not nominated in the Northern (as a hobbyist against pros as Veenstra and Sangers) and also 3rd nominated.
His track record on Teletext is however mind-blowing! His name was 63 times on the NPO-televisonpages in the past years. Who is able to show such a deck of aces too? The result sheets are truly amazing, pigeon sport like you won't observe on a daily basis.
The strain of Dekkers
The first successful introduction of birds into his loft were those bred in Ulicoten by the late Jos Leuris. Most of his pigeons were of the noble Klak-origin and it made him outstanding in Mid-Brabant with old bird racing. Hans used to work as a laboratory-employee at DSM and saw a wedding card on the board in 1990, announcing the marriage of Hans Zoontjes, (son of Wal) who apparently also worked for the same company and later on that week he went to see him to congratulate him. This first contact developed into a loft visit and also the Zoontjesbirds came to the lofts in Hedikhuizen. Enormous impulses were two acecocks bred by Jo IJpelaar of Loon op Zand, their band numbers being NL95-2217937 and NL95-2217938. Almost every pigeon on Teletext is a descendant of either of them. A foundation solid as a rock was based on the before mentioned pigeons, although Dekkers never rests in his search for better pigeons to enrich his colony. It's obvious that they are hard to find, but recently some pigeons from Berry van de Brand of Boxtel turned out fine (Schaerlaeckens & Bosuabirds).
Traditional widowhood
Twenty-four widowhoodcocks and 60 youngsters, that is all Hans Dekkers works with on the races. Besides that there are 12 breeding pairs and some feeding couples to complete the loft. Hans tried to race widowhood hens in the past, but the results were below average so he decided to return to cocks only. The widowers are paired half January and raise two youngsters and are separated afterwards. Two weeks before the first races they are paired again and after breeding for five days their widowhood period starts. The breeders are paired a month prior to the flyers. Hans used to apply strict medical schedule, but he quit this method some years ago. His pigeons have just improved their results ever since, and it also saves a great deal of expenses. Nowadays Hans only pays his veterinarian a visit when something's wrong with his birds or when their results hamper. Preventive medicine has been completely cut out of his schedule, even when it comes to canker. The only substance you can discover in his drinkers is garlic.

Especially for DreamPigeons, Hans has put together a unique lot of ten performance birds, amongst these are:

Another selling item is 'Nick'. Ever since he was a youngster he is a regular value of the Dekker's-loft. He already became acebird in his first year on the National races in combine and won a.o. a 5th NPO Ablis.

Jaak Nouwen, 13 jaar na keelkanker: 'Een passie helpt je door een moeilijke tijd'
Jaak Nouwen is drieënzestig en geniet. Van kinderen en kleinkinderen en van zijn duiven. Passies die hem door een moeilijke periode in zijn leven hielpen: Jaak kreeg 13 jaar geleden keelkanker en spreekt nu met een spreekknopje. Jaaks stem klinkt zacht en schor terwijl hij vertelt.
'Vijftig was ik en voortdurend aan het werk: als eerste man ter plaatse, als laatste weer naar huis. Ik was ploegbaas in een metaalbedrijf dat vrachtwagens herstelde. Heel de dag hing ik aan de telefoon en zette ik veertig man aan het werk. Voor een ontbijt of een fatsoenlijk middagmaal had ik geen tijd. Koffie en sigaretten hielden me in beweging. Niet echt gezond, hé. Dat besefte ik toen niet. Op een dag had ik 's avonds geen stem meer. Niet zo vreemd vond ik; ik praatte ook de hele dag. Maar een vriend apotheker stuurde me door: "Niet wachten, Jaak. Ga naar een dokter". Knobbeltjes op de stembanden, vertelde die. Ik was best ongerust al viel het woord "kanker" niet. Een jaar lang kreeg ik om de veertien dagen een laserbehandeling en nadien radiotherapie. De cystjes verkleinden en verdwenen en ik kon weer goed praten. Drie maanden lang ging ik weer aan het werk. Maar de cystjes bleven niet weg, ik werd weer hees en had af en toe geen stem meer. Ik moest terug naar het ziekenhuis. De biopsies waren niet goed. "We moeten opereren", klonk het. Mijn wereld stortte in. Kanker, het grote woord was er uit. Na de operatie werd ik wakker zonder stem. Pen en papier lagen dicht bij mijn hand. Ik kon niet meer praten, mijn strottenhoofd, stembanden en de klieren links in mijn nek waren weggehaald. Ik ging door een hel. Ook al mocht ik niet, ik kwam uit mijn bed en ging voor de spiegel staan.' Jaak haalt diep adem voor hij verder spreekt: 'Ik was niet om aan te zien; ik had een heel dik gezicht en een opening in mijn nek waar ik door ademde. Een sonde in mijn neus tot in mijn maag moest me voeden. De moed zonk in mijn schoenen. Wat overkomt me nu? , vroeg ik me af. Wanneer iemand mijn kamer binnenkwam, draaide ik mijn hoofd om. Ik wou niet dat ze me zo zagen. "Ik wil dood", schreef ik op het blad.'
'En toch: ik wou mijn vrouw zien, mijn kinderen helpen, mijn kleinkinderen zien opgroeien. Ik was bang dat allemaal kwijt te zijn. Elke ochtend werd ik wakker met maar één gedachte: kan ik genezen of niet? Genezen was het eerste wat ik wilde. Voor mijn gezin, want zij hebben me nodig. Ik wist ook, er is geen weg terug. Ik moet vooruit. '
Passie helpt 'Na mijn operatie had ik het moeilijk om terug onder de mensen te komen. Bang voor opmerkingen als "Wat heeft die voor?" Maar mijn vrienden van de duivenvereniging lieten niet af en trokken me weer het leven in. Mijn duiven, ja die ook. Door hen kon ik na de operatie niet bij de pakken blijven zitten. Elke dag moeten ze immers gevoederd en de hokken gekuist. Een passie helpt je door een moeilijke tijd.' Jaak troont me mee naar de duiventillen achter zijn huis. Ik schrik: zo veel! Honderden duiven koeren zachtjes. Enkelen komen naar buiten Jaak begroeten. Ze kennen hun baasje. Hij geeft trots toe dat er een aantal prijsduiven tussen zitten. 'Ik heb al de internationale Marseille-wedstrijd gewonnen. Mijn duif was de eerste van 20.000 duiven uit België, Nederland, Frankrijk, Duitsland en Engeland.'
'De eerste tijd na mijn operatie ging ik naar de duiven en viel op het trapje in slaap. Ik was zo verschrikkelijk moe. Vroeger sliep ik nauwelijks vijf uur per nacht, nu heb ik er minstens tien nodig. Zo moe als in het begin, ben ik nu niet meer. Maar toch blijft die vermoeidheid hangen. En de angst. De eerste maanden en jaren was ik erg ongerust telkens ik "iets" in mijn hals voelde. Komt het terug?, dacht ik dan. Na een jaar of vijf werd dat minder. Nu voel ik me heel wat minder bang. Gelukkiger ook. Ik kan mijn kinderen helpen en mijn kleinkinderen zien opgroeien. Ze komen allemaal even graag voor een dag of langer. Mijn werk? Of ik dat mis? Neen, stress mis je niet. Die tijd is voorbij. Door mijn operatie heb ik gezien dat er nog iets anders in het leven is. Nu geniet ik.'
