Practically every type of domesticated animal, from dogs to pigeons, has been used during wartime-even dolphins have been considered. But these beasts of burden often became pets to the soldiers struggling in the desperateness of battle.
"Regimental mascots gave soldiers a chance to express affection to another living being in the midst of so much death and destruction, creating a positive effect on morale," said Brett Kelley, curator of collections at the National Civil War Museum.
Animals in war is the museum's latest exhibit, which opened in March and runs until September. It examines the ways in which various types of animals were adopted by regiments and became mascots for Civil War troops, and focuses on the relationships between these animals and their owners.

Time to clean the office, do some administration and later to day we will get all our late bred birds 2010 again for the 2nd training race of the year... Last week all returned so that a good sign for sure. The health is there and they train like crazy... Just on nothing, they will not be paired up this year we we want them to become birds first, before using them on the, for us, important races.... Tomorrow some Polish fanciers will come in again for some birds and Sunday will be a day for Linda and the kids... Yesterday we picked up some birds at the loft of one of the most undervalued fanciers in Holland, well at least in my opinion... Aad van Berkel from Rotterdam... It was Aad who bred and raced Silver Shadow. This legendary super racer and breeder was bought by Hans Eijerkamp and after that he became one of the best breeders in world. The amount of winners and Ace pigeons with the blood of Silver Shadow blood in their veins is countless... Of course Hans Eijerkamp did a great job, he has a nose where to buy good pigeons for sure, but let's not forget the man who raced and bred the bird!!! Honor for those who deserve it... Well enough said... We picked up 6 birds from Aad yesterday. In the pedigree of these birds you will find legendary birds like Don Leo, Rominger, Silvermann, Silver Boy, Silver Shadow, De Morlincourt and more.... Shortly, check our website in the next couple of days, they will be online soon and sold quickly?
Jan de Wijs & Son, winners Flanders Cup Holland 2010 I spend a lot of my time writing about all kinds of fanciers and pigeons... I love to do it and I believe a lot of you read them with a lot of joy.... Today I try to write something about myself, which means our (My dad and me) private results... When I sit down and try it is harder then I thought. I do not like to scream it of the roof tops but we are to be found in the absolute top in Holland on the extreme long distances... In 2010 we won the Flanders Cup Holland (First 10 Nominated on Barcelona), we are overall Champion in our long-distance club De Glazenstad, 1st Champion Int. races (morning release ZLU) in the Fond club and more.... Barcelona 2010 we won 1,2,3,4,5 in the region and we where the first in Holland with 6 pigeons home... 12 pigeons arrived in our district on Saturday 6 from us... No without screaming it of the rooftops... If you are looking for some really strong long distance birds based on the strong as iron Aarden / Batenburg birds you should check the few pigeons from our private loft below...
After a busy weekend, back in the office again... Saturday some guys from Poland came in to collect some birds, they where impressed by the birds we have on stock and told us they will be back next week to collect some more. GREAT to see happy people when they pick up a bird... Sunday, my favorite football club played so after a few very busy weeks I now had time to go... The sun was shining, a cold beer and a great exiting match... We lost 1-2 but we had chances to win... Let's blame the referee. The training race from Saturday was postponed to Sunday. So our late breds now now what it is to be in the basket 2 nights. They are all back and they did very well.... Well, enough said for today, let's get some new birds online...
Great news for the guys in Bangladesh... The papers are ready and in Bangladesh our partner is working on the import permit as we speak.... We will keep you all posted about the exact shipping date...
