Greetings,
Our Annual General Meeting was held last month, despite the inclement weather conditions. Thanks to those that attended this meeting, as it allowed us to proceed with electing the 2011 Board of Directors. I hope you will be able to attend the March meeting, as this will be your opportunity to make suggestions for what you would like the club to do for you this year. Hopefully you will provide suggestions on what you can do for the club!

Burnaby B.C. - Sergio Batista will appear at a Burnaby City Council meeting on March 15 to petition them to change the bylaw on keeping backyard pigeons. After keeping pigeons for 20 years in various communities in the Lower Mainland, Batista moved to his current residence on 11th Avenue in Burnaby a few years ago and was told that his 10 pigeons must go after a complaint was received from a neighbour. Batista says his racing pigeon club has members who keep pigeons throughout the Lower Mainland. Burnaby Mayor Corrigan indicated that petitions to amend bylaws have met with little success in the past.
Abbotsford B.C. - Police have reported thefts of more than 5000 pigeons over the last few months from Abbotsford area farms. The logistics of the theft of these birds which were being cage raised in commercial squab operations is puzzling and Abbotsford police are liaising with Langley police about similar incidents in that neighbouring jurisdiction. The estimated value of the stock lost is around $20,000.
China - Mainland China's Peoples' Liberation Army, already the world's largest military force, has 10,000 new recruits in the form of pigeons. While pigeons have served in the PLA since 1950 their numbers have been limited to a couple of hundred. The new pigeons will be trained to deliver messages as a contingency plan in case of the breakdown of mass communication systems. Chen Chuntao, in charge of the pigeon division, says pigeons are "the most practical and effective short and medium distance tool for communication during electromagnetic interference or signal collapse".
New York - former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson will be starring in a documentary series on pigeon racing to be aired on the Animal Planet channel starting at 10 pm March 15, 2010. Tyson has raised pigeons all his life. Growing up in New York's Brownsville neighbourhood the troubled teen took refuge by caring for his pigeons in a rooftop loft. He claims pigeons introduced him to boxing when he was confronted by an older boy who killed the pigeon he was holding and Tyson responded with a punch. Critics say the documentary series is a crash course in pigeon racing - although one describes it as "mostly old guys sitting around on rooftops waiting for their pigeons to come home". But the series features excellent camera work over rooftop landscapes with rich characters such as a cigar chomping Portuguese businessman, two young Mexican brothers and an old Italian pigeon breeder. Tyson currently keeps 2500 pigeons in various locations. After the series premiered, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) protested outside Tyson's home in California stating that pigeon racing was cruel.
Saskatoon, Sask - the City of Saskatoon has introduced an annual license fee of $16 for owners of pigeon lofts within city boundaries. The bylaw also stipulates that each pigeon must have two square feet of floor space in the loft. The fine for violating the bylaw is $250.

5-3-2011- Co Verbree Het is nu tijd om de duiven in orde te hebben en te gaan werken aan het aankomende seizoen, zo'n 5 weken voor de eerste opleervlucht. Die 5 weken is zo ongeveer de tijd tussen de kweek en vlieg seizoen zelf vinden we dat een prachtige tijd om de puntjes op de i te zetten. lees meer >>

After a hectic day yesterday with a lot of hours in the car a day at the office today. Time to answer all the emails... A busy day ahead of me... First to the airport to deliver the birds for Malta. One of the biggest shipments to Malta ever!!!
