Ik wil alle lezers van de nieuwsbrief een voorspoedig en bovenal gezond 2011 toewensen!
In oktober en november van het afgelopen jaar schreef ik een en ander over de virussen die in mijn optiek deel uitmaken van het Jonge duiven syndroom. Het betrof het Circovirus en het Herpesvirus. In deze nieuwsbrief wil ik aandacht besteden aan de derde pijler onder dit syndroom namelijk het Adenovirus. In de volksmond vaak Coli genoemd. Dit is echter een misleidende term. Ik denk dat we de E-Colibacterie wel een rol mogen toedichten in het jonge duivensyndroom, maar Adeno en Coli zijn echt heel verschillende begrippen. Als we het over Adeno hebben, bedoelen we het Adenovirus en als we het over Coli hebben, doelen we op een bacterie. Het één is dus een virus en de andere een bacterie. Dit heeft grote consequenties voor de behandeling. Tegen bacteriën kunnen we nog iets ondernemen. Voor de virusinfecties ligt dit toch al veel moeilijker. Van oudsher weten de duivenmelkers dat er vaak sprake is van een gecombineerde aandoening. Dus een besmetting door het Adenovirus waar de secundaire besmetting met de E-Colibacterie het probleem alleen maar erger wordt. In de praktijk wordt vaak gesproken in termen als: Ik heb de Coli aan de duiven. Door het gebruik van allerlei termen door elkaar is de helderheid omtrent deze ziekte een beetje naar de achtergrond verschoven. Ik merk dat steeds meer liefhebbers door de bomen het bos niet meer lijken te zien. Zeker nu ook nog eens andere virussen en bacteriën een rol lijken te gaan spelen bij het ziektebeeld waardoor we het hele ziektebeeld daarom beter kunnen vangen onder de term Jonge duiven syndroom. De wetenschap probeert meestal juist de verschillende veroorzakers van een ziektebeeld van elkaar te scheiden. Uit het oogpunt van de wetenschap lovenswaardig en zonder meer correct. Maar deze nieuwsbrief streeft een praktische benadering na. Het is inmiddels een gegeven dat het ziektebeeld, dat met name de jonge duiven ieder jaar lijkt te treffen niet altijd meer simpel te vangen is onder de naam Adeno of Adenocoli of Coli. Er spelen meer factoren een rol en daar wil ik verderop in deze nieuwsbrief verder op ingaan.
Adenovirose: Als we eerst kijken naar het Adenovirus zelf dan kunnen we ons daarna richten op de secundaire infecties en de rol van dit virus bij het Jonge duiven syndroom. Het Adenovirus bij duiven is al tientallen jaren bekend, maar vooral de laatste 15-20 jaar is de betekenis van dit virus voor de duiven toegenomen. Er worden in principe twee ziektebeelden onderscheiden.
Klassieke vorm: De zgn. klassieke vorm komt vooral bij de jonge duiven voor in het eerste levensjaar. We zien de zieke duiven vooral tussen maart en juli met een piek in juni. In de overige maanden komen veel minder gevallen van deze vorm van Adnovirose voor. Een ander ziektebeeld dat aan het Adenovirus wordt toegeschreven is de zgn. Necrotiserende Hepatitis (leverontsteking met verval), waarbij het sterke verval van de lever op de voorgrond treedt, Die ziektebeeld verloopt veel dramatischer dan de klassieke vorm. Dit ziektebeeld kan het hele jaar door voorkomen en kan duiven van elke leeftijd aantasten.
Wijze van besmetting: Bij de klassieke vorm besmetten de jonge duiven zich voornamelijk via de reismanden, zodra de opleervluchten van start gaan. Er wordt van uitgegaan dat er gezonde dragers voorkomen die op deze wijze gevoelige duiven besmetten. De ziekte kan ontstaan door contact met zieke duiven of door contact met de ontlasting van zieke duiven. Besmettingen tot 80% van de hokken komen voor. De incubatietijd is de tijd tussen het besmet raken en de eerste ziekteverschijnselen. Deze tijd is doorgaans zeer kort. Twee tot drie dagen na de besmettingen is het virus al weer uit de darm verdwenen. Meestal wordt in korte tijd het hele hok via de mest besmet. Het virus veroorzaakt ernstige darmletsels die bacteriën, zoals E-Coli, maar ook Hexamiten en gisten zoals Candida de kans bieden om zich sterk te gaan ontwikkelen waardoor het ziektebeeld nog kan verergeren. Door de beschadiging van de darmwand in combinatie met de sterke vermeerdering van bacteriën neemt de kans op bloedvergiftiging (sepsis) toe. Hoewel de besmetting meestal terug te wijzen is op contact met andere duiven in de reismanden, komen ook ziektegevallen voor bij duiven die nog nooit buiten zijn geweest. Dat is terug te wijzen op de aanwezigheid van gezonde dragers die plotseling veel virus gaan produceren waardoor de ziekte tot uiting komt. Hoewel de klassieke vorm vooral aantasting van de darm veroorzaakt, kan het virus zich ook in de levercellen vermenigvuldigen. Dit is de verklaring voor het feit dat in een aantal gevallen de aangetaste duiven slechts traag van de doorgemaakte infectie herstellen.
Ziektebeeld: De dieren die besmet raken vertonen gewichtsverlies, braken en diarree. Dit wordt dan veroorzaakt door de vermeerdering van het virus in de darmcellen. De sterfte die optreedt bij dit ziektebeeld wordt meestal veroorzaakt door de verergering van bacteriën, als de E-Coli. Deze dieren krijgen dan last van stinkende groene diarree en uitdroging. Het virus zelf is doorgaans weer snel (rond de drie dagen) uit de darm verdwenen. Als de symptomen langer aanhouden, dan worden deze veroorzaakt door de secundaire infecties. Duiven die lijden aan de Necrotiserende Hepatitis sterven doorgaans binnen 24-48 uur, waarbij de enige symptomen soms braken en gele ontlasting zijn. Vaak sterft 30% van de dieren op het hok. Gedurende een periode van 6 weken kunnen nieuwe ziektegevallen voorkomen. Tussen de zieke duiven zitten dan duiven die klinisch nergens last van hebben. Het kan zelfs zo zijn dat de nestjongen normaal opgroeien terwijl een van de ouders aan de ziekte bezwijkt.
Diagnostiek: De diagnose wordt deels gesteld door de klinische verschijnselen, de leeftijd der dieren en het tijdstip van het jaar. Evenwel zijn er meerdere oorzaken die deze symptomen kunnen veroorzaken. Bevestiging middels nader onderzoek is dan soms ook gewenst. Het was daarvoor tot voor kort noodzakelijk om via sectie en histologisch onderzoek de diagnose te bevestigen. Inmiddels hebben we de beschikking over testen waarmee we binnen vijf minuten de aanwezigheid van het virus kunnen aantonen. Een grote sprong voorwaarts in de diagnostiek.
Behandeling: Tegen het Adenovirus zelf is weinig te ondernemen. Er bestaat nog geen vaccin tegen dit virus. Het Adenovaccin voor kippen dat door sommigen wordt ingezet heeft geen nut. De fabrikant deelt mee dat het geen werking heeft bij duiven. Maar ja, als een liefhebber ze er mee inent en hij krijgt dat jaar geen Adeno, dan is deze al gauw overtuigd, dat het door dit vaccin komt. Helaas hebben we diverse hokken gezien waar Adeno toch voorkwam na enting met dit vaccin. Zolang er geen vaccin beschikbaar is moet de behandeling zich vooral richten op de preventie, door de weerstand van de duiven op een hoger plan te brengen, stress trachten te vermijden en in geval van een uitbraak een goed middel in te zetten wat de infectiedruk van ziekteverwekkende darmbacteriën helpt te verlagen, dan wel de ziekteverwekkende bacteriën afdoodt. Omdat bij de jonge duiven vaak ook latent een besmetting met Hexamiten voorkomt is het ook goed deze parasiet gelijktijdig te bestrijden. Naast de behandeling met een gericht antibioticum is ondersteuning van de vochtbalans veelal aangewezen omdat de dieren door de heftige diarree veel vocht kunnen verliezen en daardoor sterk kunnen uitdrogen. Men kan dit bereiken door een elektrolytenhoudende drank te verstrekken. Bijvoorbeeld Bonisol. Ter ondersteuning kunnen na de behandeling Probiotica verstrekt worden. De duifspecifieke probiotica dragen bij aan een sneller herstel van de gezonde darmflora na de diarree en de antibioticagift.
Bespreking: Als we te maken hebben met een heftige uitbraak van het Adenovirus of liever Jonge duiven syndroom, immers de zuivere Adeno gevallen worden vaak vertroebeld door bijkomende andere infecties, dan is ingrijpen met medicijnen veelal onvermijdelijk. Als we in ogenschouw nemen dat tegen het Adenovirus zelf weinig te doen is, simpelweg omdat er weinig medicijnen zijn, welke een (betaalbare) antivirale werking hebben, moet we ons vooral richten op de voorkoming van deze kwalen. Zoals bij de bespreking van het virus reeds werd besproken komen er zeer waarschijnlijk gezonde dragers voor. Duiven die het adenovirus bij zich dragen maar toch niet ziek worden. Duiven die experimenteel onder normale hokomstandigheden kunstmatig worden besmet worden vaak niet ziek. Er moeten dus andere factoren in het spel zijn die bijdragen aan het uitbreken van de ziekte. Daarbij speelt in ieder geval de factor stress een rol. Deze stress zien we normaal dus vooral tijdens de opleervluchten. Toename van stress en daarmee de virusvermeerdering zorgen dan voor de verspreiding van tot dan toe ogenschijnlijk gezonde duiven. Hoewel er nooit sprake kan zijn van 100% succes is duidelijk dat preventieve behandelingen die gericht zijn op een ondersteuning van de gezonde darmflora en beperking van de stress wezenlijk bij kunnen dragen aan de beperking van de uitbraak van deze ziekte. Daartoe hoort in principe niet het preventief kuren met antibiotica, omdat deze niet alleen de ziekteverwekkende darmbacteriën aantasten maar ook de goede darmbacteriën die de duif nodig heeft. Probiotica, verzuring van het drinkwater of producten, zoals de Bony SGR en de Bony Sambucca plus kunnen in deze behulpzaam zijn.
De praktijk wijst uit dat jonge duiven die na het afzetten een kuur van een week tot tien dagen met Bony SGR krijgen en daarna 2 x per week, minder last hebben van een eventuele uitbraak van het Adenovirus. De uitbraken zelf worden er al flink door beperkt. Maar duiven die op deze manier ondersteund worden lijken beter op de soms noodzakelijke medicamenteuze behandeling te reageren en komen weer sneller terug in conditie. Zoals in vorige nieuwsbrieven al uitgebreid werd beschreven hebben we meer en meer te maken bij de jonge duiven, met een combinatie aan ziekteverwekkers, welke ogenschijnlijk dezelfde symptomen geven maar die toch allemaal een andere achtergrond hebben. Vandaar dat ik daarom liever spreek van het Jonge duiven syndroom. De preventieve aanpak blijft hetzelfde. Namelijk optimaliseren van de afweer en ondersteuning van de darm en de darmflora waardoor de pathogenen minder grip krijgen op de patiënten. Het blijft in de specifieke gevallen wel noodzakelijk om de veroorzaker vast te stellen zodat meer gericht behandeld kan worden. De mate waarin het jonge duivensyndroom van zich doet spreken maakt de preventieve gezondheidszorg alleen maar belangrijker om de infectiedruk te kunnen blijven beheersen. In onze kliniek bestaat de preventieve gezondheidszorg enerzijds uit het blijven monitoren van de duiven middels onderzoek. Anderzijds zetten we de (jonge) duiven op het basissysteem bestaande uit Bony SGR (bij het afzetten een week lang en daarna twee maal per week), Bony Basiskern en BMT over het voer 1 x per week samen met Nucleovit en verder (eventueel) Bony M Mineralen Mix en Bony mineral. De jonge duiven kunnen hiermee doorgaans zonder problemen goed opgroeien en hebben in de meeste gavallen zo ook geen of heel weinig medicatie nodig.

The voices of about a dozen men mixed with the cooing of hundreds of pigeons. While the cacophony is overwhelming to a newcomer, it's music to other ears.

"I don't hear all the birds," Dennis Falk said. "(I hear) all the yakking."
Many of the roughly 250 pigeons had eaten a special high-fat preflight meal and were flapping their wings to let their handlers know they were ready to fly. Their owners would oblige; hours later the birds were released for the start of a 300-mile race.
The men, from a variety of backgrounds and living throughout the Panhandle, had gathered last weekend at the Amarillo Racing Pigeon Club on Northwest Ninth Avenue. They're part of a little-known but growing subculture with an overriding passion - pigeon racing.
It's a sport that combines speed, intelligence and luck. The top competitors can be sold for more than $140,000. In some countries bets of several thousand dollars are placed on pigeon races. In Florida, retirement communities have sprung up devoted to the sport. There's even a magazine circulating in the U.S. that's published twice monthly and focuses exclusively on pigeon racing.
"There has been a push for a hands-on activity," said Deone Roberts, a sports development manager for the American Racing Pigeon Union based in Oklahoma. "Get back to nature. Get outdoors. You can get real involved in this, or you can simply enjoy the birds flying."
The Amarillo club hosts 20 races a year that test the birds' endurance at various distances. For the race last weekend, the pigeons were driven to Shawnee, Okla., and released.
"You see 250 birds go up in the air all at once," club member John Somerville said. "It's pretty neat."
An innate homing sense in the birds sends them back home. The flock initially flies together until the strongest take the lead and break away. The birds can fly up to 500 miles a day at average speeds of at least 40 mph.
When the pigeons arrive at their respective coops, their arrival times and the distances they flew are clocked by yards per minute. Each loft has a computer clock, and the birds are equipped with a chip that logs arrival times. In the race a week ago, the winning pigeon flew about 42 mph and made the 300-mile flight in less than six hours.
In Texas alone, there are about 30 pigeon-racing clubs, Roberts said. Nationally, the ranks of the American Racing Pigeon Union are increasing by about 3 percent a year, she said. Currently there are about 10,000 union members and an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 more who aren't members of the organization, she said.
For some of the 18 Amarillo club members, pigeons are lifelong passion.
Falk, the president of FirstBank Southwest, was one of the founding members who started the club in 1961. A picture of the founding members includes Falk, then 15, and still hangs on the clubhouse wall.
"That was a long time ago," the 60-year-old said. "(I) just never got over (the sport)."
Member Bob Muscianese, 71, jokes that he was born in a pigeon loft in New York.
"It gets into your blood," he said. "They're probably the greatest athletes in the world."
Many develop an attachment to their pigeons, but the men say it's best not to get too attached.
"We have a lot of casualties," Muscianese said.
"It's pretty much a game of chance," Falk added.
Falk said he loses about 50 to 60 percent of his 100 or so racing birds during the year.
Hungry hawks, hunters who confuse pigeons with doves and run-ins with barbed-wire fences can bring an abrupt end to a pigeon's life.
During recent races, about 95 percent of the birds returned safely, Somerville said.
The more a pigeon competes and wins, the more valuable it becomes as breeding stock.
One pigeon in Belgium recently fetched 110,000 euros - the equivalent of $145,000, Somerville said.
In Indiana, one breeder sells new hatchlings for $5,000 - each. An Oklahoma "feather merchant" has a $4 million inventory of pigeons and travels around the world selling his stock, Somerville said.
The merchant pays about $5,000 per breeding bird and then sells the pigeons at lower prices so that "normal folk" can afford the hobby, he said.
"You can spend an unlimited amount of money," Falk said.
Dr. Ron Lacy said that in five years he hasn't spent nearly as much on pigeons as he has on a race horse.
"They often joke it's the poor man's horse racing," Roberts said.
Members of the Amarillo club claim they usually bet no more than $10 on a race. But in China, the newest hot spot for the sport, bets can be in the thousands of dollars, Somerville said.
But it's not about the money for the Amarillo men. It's about the bragging rights.
"I beat them every week," Lacy said. "We have a lot of fun, right or wrong."

Hows this for a seasons racing:- 16 x 1st club; 11 x 2nd club; 4 x 3rd club. Add to that lot 11 x 1st Fed; 6 x 2nd Fed; 3 x 3rd Fed AND 6 x 1st; 2 x 2nd; 2 x 3rd in Federation Open races, PLUS 4 x 1st; 3 x 2nd and one 3rd Open in Welsh Grand National FC races and you have the perfect racing season.
The above wins were achieved by Tony Buttigieg, a young Newport fancier, during the 2009 season and these wins follow on from an almost equally impressive 2008 racing season when the Buttigieg team won 8x 1st club; 6 x 1st Fed; 2 x 1st Fed Open and 2 x 1st WGNFC.
Not surprisingly therefore the name of Buttigieg has been constantly in the thoughts of north road fanciers in Wales for the best part of two years. In the company of Ray Strawbridge, I recently visited Tonys home in the Gaer district of Newport in order to give this keen young fancier the recognition that his performances over the past two seasons has demanded.
Tony is a working man with a young family and as such his time spent with the pigeons is at a premium as he has to balance his home and work responsibilities with his ambitions as a top class pigeon fancier. As a result, the daily loft management system that Tony has developed has been stripped down to the bare necessities, or to put it another way, as the heading to this report states simple is best.
The amazing results outlined in the opening paragraph have been achieved racing just 15 widowhood/ celibate cocks and 8 racing hens. The bloodlines raced are a combination of Janssens from Kenny Fletcher of Newport who, when racing was a multiple Federation winner in his own right. Added to these are Bert Hession Staf Van Reets plus some of Brian Sheppards International winning bloodlines crossed with birds originating from the Yorkshire lofts of Jackson & Andrews. The sire of Shaw Gold and the 02 cock was bred by Fred Hall & Daughter of Worthing, whilst the dam originated in the Sussex lofts of former Pau NFC Kings Cup winner John Magee. This stock pair was then sold to the Skelmersdale partnership of Southern & McCrudden who actually bred the 02 cock. The pair were subsequently gifted by the partners to Tony who bred Shaw Gold in his Newport loft. The type of bird raced is on the small side of medium, mostly blues with the occasional chequer and pied. They were lean, mean and raring to go even though it was a dismal damp day in early October when we visited. The loft measures 22 ft x 6ft and faces west and is divided into three sections. One section for the racing hens and the hens that are later mated to the widowhood / celibate cocks; one section for the cocks and a third section for the young bird team. The hens section has a small aviary attached to the south facing wall so the hens can relax in the sunshine when the cocks are not at exercise. The young birds also have access to an aviary and this also doubles as a basket store as it has a roof made from opaque plastic sheets which allows sunlight to enter but keeps the rain out. A further small loft, which Tony told me is now used as a corn store, completes the L shaped set up.
The fifteen racing cocks are not mated before racing starts nor are the 8 racing hens. The cocks get a few training spins from just 11 miles before the first race and no training thereafter. Hens are shown briefly before basketting and the hens along with nest pans are in the cocks boxes awaiting the racers on their return. The eight racing hens are privately trained to Liverpool approximately 150 miles at least five times before their selected race which in 2009 was the Crieff National at 333 miles. Note, the eight hens did not compete in any club races before their first National race. The next race for the hens was again from Crieff and their third and final race of the season was from Thurso at 490 miles. Any hens that show an inclination to mate are rewarded by being allowed to sit some stock birds eggs and rear the subsequent hatchlings. Once old bird racing is over, the old birds are allowed to choose a mate and settle down to rear what is for the cocks, their first youngsters of the season.
Cocks and hens are exercised for one hour once per day and are fed in to their one daily meal. This is mixed by Tony from various mixes and straights and is adjusted as Tony sees fit. From speaking to Tony I can tell you that the race mix is extremely light and contains a very high proportion of carbohydrates. The birds are fed to appetite but no food is left in the loft, the pigeons have to eat all of the feed mix and Tony has noticed that they eat an average of 1 1 ¼ ounces per bird per day.
Young birds are raced on the darkness system and again have one hours exercise each day. The young cocks and hens are kept separate during the week, as by the time young bird racing comes around the old racing cocks have been moved over to the old hens section to rear their first youngsters and the young hens then occupy the old cocks section. The youngsters are allowed together for a short time just before basketting.
The young bird team is trained to 11 miles before being entered in their first race which is usually an 85 mile dash from Shrewsbury. However, some of the young cocks are extensively trained privately as far as Shrewsbury but are not raced as young birds.
Before racing begins all birds, be they old birds or young birds undergo a 10 day treatment with Baytril this is followed successively by treatments for cocci, canker and worms.
Right then, what of the top performers in this team of top performers. First to hand was a young blue cock now named Dusty Maize. He got his name because Tony gave a friend a bag of dog tooth maize that was a bit floury as it had not been cleaned. The friend refused to feed it to his birds so Tony took it home and fed it to his young bird team in the lead up to the young bird National. Result Dusty Maize wins the young bird National! This young blue cock was just on medium size with a bit of depth to the front of the keel. He was entered in 6 young bird races winning 5 x 1sts and 1 x 2nd club plus 4 x 1st, 1 x 2nd & 1 x 3rd Fed and 2 x 1st National along with 2 x 1st Fed open and 1st Welsh Championship Club. Not a bad haul for a young pigeon in its first seasons racing.
Also handled was The 02 Cock a long casted pencil blue with a broad green circle of eyesign. In her first race in 2009 she won 1st club, Fed, Open and 1st National Crieff, winning the National by 3 hours in a very difficult race with only 7 birds home on the day in Wales.

Wayward racing pigeon finds a home at Carolina Christian
Amazing Grace isn't just a hymn; it's a her, too, as in the aptly named racing pigeon that found a temporary home at Carolina Christian Academy last week.
"She once was lost, but now she's found," said CCA seventh-grader Jenny Payne.
Jenny came up with the name after classmates Lauren Hamby, Ashley Pearson and Hope Harris found the pigeon beneath the car line shelter at the school on Sept. 13.
"It wouldn't fly away and was by itself," Hope said. "We just thought it was any kind of bird until we found out about it."
The girls told Paul Nichols, the school's minister of music and fine arts director, about the bird. When he saw the bird by the CCA front door, Nichols realized it wasn't a wild pigeon because it had a numbered band on one of its legs. The bird was hesitant at first, but let Nichols pick it up.
"We checked with Clemson Extension Service and the Humane Society because we thought the pigeon may have been tagged for some type of scientific experiment, but that wasn't the case," Nichols said.
Nichols tried to release the bird, but it flew into a hedge near the front of the building and stayed there.
"We threw it up and it just sort of fluttered and came back down in the bushes," Nichols said.
On Sept. 14, when Nichols got to school, the pigeon was standing in the driveway. He picked the bird up and took it to CCA science teacher Carla Bell.
"It was really tame," said Adam Bowling. "You could yell at it and it wouldn't move." Bell started searching the Internet for homing pigeons and found the Web site for the American Racing Pigeon Association, (www.pigeon.org).
From there, and by using the numbered band, and through four phone calls, Bell's biology and physical-science classes contacted the pigeon's owner, Vincent Rooney of Chesapeake, Va.
"It's come to be a good learning experience," Bell said. "If you find one, you aren't allowed to keep it until you've exhausted all means possible to find the owner."
Rooney, 63, has been breeding and racing pigeons since moving to Virginia in 1997.
Until getting off course, Rooney said the 6-month-old female racing pigeon's only name was the last three digits of her registration number.
"I just called her 813," a laughing Rooney said by phone from Chesapeake on Thursday. "I have about 120 birds and that's too many names to come up with."
Rooney said Amazing Grace was part of a Sept. 10 pigeon race that included about 400 birds. The birds were taken to Durham, N.C., and released.
They were supposed to fly the 150-plus air miles back to Chesapeake.
Rooney said of the 13 birds he had in the race, only five made it back home. Amazing Grace makes the sixth bird. Rooney said it's not unusual for racing pigeons, like Amazing Grace, to get off course, especially those birds that use the Interstate-95 corridor as a point of reference.
In pigeon racing, a bird is timed from when it's released - anywhere from 100 miles to 1,000 miles from its home coop until it returns.
Pigeons have a scientifically unexplained ability to find their way home. They were regularly used to relay messages in World Wars I and II when other communication messages were impractical.
It's not hard to train them, Rooney said. You start small and then expand the birds' range, he said.
Amazing Grace is a young bird in training, and while the Sept. 10 race was her first 150-mile event, she has flown in 100-mile races, he said.
"This kind of racing isn't an exact science," Rooney said. "When you take in factors like weather, the earth's magnetic field, sunspots and cellular phone activity, they will get off course."
Rooney figures during the flight home, the pigeon lost track of the group she was with and followed another flock that brought her to Lancaster, which is about the same distance from Durham to Chesapeake in air miles.
"Birds of a feather flock together and they just hook up and love to fly," Rooney said. "She just flew until she got tired and stopped."
Rooney is grateful for the care that the CCA students gave Amazing Grace. After learning that she wouldn't eat bread, the students visited a pet store to get her the proper food. She was kept in a cage in Bell's classroom until the special container to send her home arrived. The pigeon was mailed back to Rooney on Wednesday.
"She has good breeding and is worth about $250," Rooney said. "I just hope she's going to be OK. I'm happy to see a wayward racing pigeon generate this kind of interest from a group of kids. There are very few people interested in pigeons these days. It's really dwindling."
That's not the case at Carolina Christian Academy. "Maybe the next time he lets Amazing Grace go, she might fly back here," Nichols said. "She might think of us as her second home."

Holland is under the spell of a very large fire at a chemical plant yesterday. Heavy chemical smoke caused big problems in a big part of the country. This morning one of my scouts was in for a chat and some coffee. He did a great jog this week, he bought some very interesting birds from superb lofts. Forumdag. Op zaterdag 8 januari 2011 is het eindelijk zover: onze jaarlijkse forumdag. Deze dag begint om 14.00 en vindt plaats in Doorn (Clubhuis Doornsportpark TuillandBuurtweg 3/het duivenlokaal is groen met gele deuren en er staat PV Luchtbode op de voorgevel).
Wat kunt u verwachten? Uiteraard ontvangen wij u eerst met een lekker bakje thee/koffie of wat fris. De voorzitter van deze dag Willem van Breene zal de dag met ons openen. Vervolgens zullen er verschillende dingen op het programma staan: Prijsuitreiking vliegcompetiegezellig duivenmelkeneen powerpoint presentatie met uitleg van onze weerman Zimoa over wat goed en slecht duivenweer is (onder voorbehoud). Tenslotte overhandigen wij 10% van de opbrengst van de bonnenverkoop aan PPN. Uiteraard zal er tussendoor voldoende gelegenheid zijn om elkaar te ontmoeten.
De deuren gaan open om 13.30 en we nodigen iedereen graag uit op deze duivenmiddag! Om enigszins een indruk te krijgen hoeveel mensen we kunnen verwachtenkunt u op het forum aangeven met hoeveel personen u mogelijk denkt aanwezig te zijn.

De beheerders en tot ziens op 8 januari op de forumdag in Doorn
over enkele dagen worden de voorbiedingen op de bonnenverkopingen van Moed en Hoop uit Retie en Onder Ons uit Vlimmeren afgesloten.
Wat mij vooral verwondert, is dat de bon van Jos Van der Veken (verkoping Retie), misschien wel België's beste hafospeler 2010, voor enkele weken een bedrag haalde van 570 euro en nu slechts aan 130 euro geprijsd staat.
Ook een duifje van Leo Heremans (Vlimmeren) staat momenteel nog maar op 150 euro.
Ook sommige andere topaanbiedingen zijn nog ondergewaardeerd.
In bijlage vind je tevens een overzicht met alle bonschenkers van Fondclub Herentals. Sinds enkele dagen zijn de aanbiedingen nog uitgebreid met enkele toppers uit Nederland op de overnachtvluchten. A beautiful day in Holland. The temp today was just above zero and there was a bright sun shining most of the day. It was one of those days that told me that the holidays are over and we need to focus on the next racing season. The birds look great and because we had a lot of snow lately the birds trained around the loft since a few weeks. When there is a lot of snow I keep them inside! They enjoyed themselves for at least 90 minutes this morning... After I took care of all the birds I went to a good friend (colleague in business). He sold some birds from my private loft for me to Japan and today was the day to deliver... A nice chat about all things which are going on in our sport. Some wise lessons and hot black coffee... Always nice to chat with true friends... Shortly the birds for Japan are on the way and my pigeons and me had an enjoyable day....
Good news for the guys in Malta!!! The next shipment is confirmed for January 19 - 2011!!! There is still some room for birds, so buying now means the birds will be in your loft next week....

NO, what you see is what you get!!! In our database we have over 2000 fanciers world-wide who ever bought a bird from us and still we do realize that every sale is special!!! Why? We do understand that our clients need to depend on our knowledge and opinion about a bird. They are buying something they did never see
Our experience is that to sell the 1st bird to a new client is the hardest
Once they received the bird(s) in good condition the next one is much easier to sell
What new clients dont know when they first contact us is that from that time we are constantly on the lookout to help them improve their breeding loft
When a new bird comes in our system will give us a list with possible buyers for that bird
Many birds are offered to our known clients first. This is how we thank them for dealing with us in the first place

As good as the weather was yesterday so bad is it today... Rain all day... Holland is under the spell of a very large fire at a chemical plant yesterday. Heavy chemical smoke caused big problems in a big part of the country. Specialtyyyyy Strijen, Mookhoek, Zuid Beijerland and Dordrecht where in the danger zone. Let's hope the birds in that region did not suffer... This morning one of my scouts was in for a chat and some coffee. He did a great jog this week, he bought some very interesting birds from superb lofts. So soon you all will be able to buy pigeons for workingman prices from Robert van Eyken, Gerard Koopman, Roland Janssens and more... Jaap thanks a million you did a great job!!! I could not do without people like you....
