In de late namiddag van vrijdag 17 mei 1940 kwamen de eerste Duitse infanteristen aan te Viane. Het kleine dorp was binnen een paar uur volledig ingenomen door honderden soldaten, velen per fiets, anderen met paard en kar, en die zich met de komende nacht in het vooruitzicht groepeerden in de weiden ter plaatse genaamd Stelterode (tussen de Edingseweg en de Beverstraat) en op het Vianeplein. In de vroege ochtend van maandag 20 mei vertrokken ze richting Lessines (Deux-Acren) en Geraardsbergen met het oog op de oversteek van de Dender.

Voor de Duitsers kwam het er tijdens de laatste dagen van de achttiendaagse veldtocht op aan om de troepen die zich binnen de omsingeling zaten te vernietigen. Ze rukten dan ook verder op. Het front aan de Leie viel in duigen. Vanuit het oosten vielen de Duitsers de Engelsen aan en drongen ze terug tot de Vlaamse Ardennen. In het westen hadden de Belgen een nieuwe linie opgetrokken van de kust tot de Leie. Ze hadden er stellingen ingenomen achter een afleidingskanaal
Le pont de la rue des Moulins est le plus ancien des quatre ponts qui établissaient les communications entre le bas et le haut de la ville.
L'ouvrage, qui se trouve à proximité immédiate de l'Hôpital N-D à la Rose fut détruit par les Anglais qui le firent sauter le 17 mai 1940 lors de leur départ de Lessines.
L'explosion provoqua des fissures dans la face de l'Hôpital et souffla plusieurs vitraux de la chapelle.
Un pont provisoire en bois fut établi en attendant la reconstruction de l'édifice, qui allait quand même se faire attendre 10 ans !

West of Antwerpen Dutch forces still defend local fortifications and fired on crossings across the Schelde. Local heavy fighting.
Bridge construction across the Schelde.
Another fort in Namur is taken without resistance. Another fort in Lüttich is taken. Several Forts still resisting.
In Antwerpen the pedestrian tunnel is undamaged the road tunnel destroyed. The bridgehead on the western side of the Schelde is expanded but heavy enemy artillery fire from the western fortifications on the bridgehead and the river.
The oil-tanks partially caught fire today by artillery fire. Maybe the main oil-storage can be saved.
Nearly no ships are left in Antwerpen just a few trawlers.
On the island of Walcheren all coastal batteries are destroyed. In the docks of Vlissingen 2 12cm, 1 Patrol boat, 2 floating planes and 1 mine-depot captured.
Operation Stein will be established in Vlissingen to cross the Schelde.

1600 French and 13000 Dutch soldiers captured on island Zeeland.
Fortress Antwerpen surrenders to XXVI.A.K. As the Schelde-bridge and the road-tunnel are destroyed the advance of the Korps is stopped. The pedestrian-tunnel is damaged. Pi.Btl.216 starts to build a bridge.
XXVI.A.K.:
225.Inf.Div.: the division captured 14000 enemy soldiers in fortifications of Antwerpen during the last two days.
216.Inf.Div.: As the division prepares to attack into the city of Antwerpen the city surrenders. Pi-Btl.216 starts to build a bridge which is finished on the 21.Mai.
IX.A.K.: (moved from 6.Armee to 18.Armee this day)
19.Inf.Div.: During the night 18./19. enemy artillery fire on German positions around Teralphene. In the early morning recon reports that the enemy is not building up stiff resistance and the division commander orders to attack across the Dender.
I., II./I.R.73 advance to the river and come under heavy enemy artillery fire. German artillery forces the enemy to withdraw from the positions along the canal. He goes back to Denderleeuw.
II./73 finds no location to cross the Dender and evades to the sector of the I./73 north of the canal-knee. 5./73 under Olt.Seyrl is the first company that gets across followed by Major Köhler the Btl. commander. Under enemy fire the soldiers embark the dinghies and cross the canal. Major Köhler breaks into Denderleeuw with two groups and the company group of 5./73 and is involved in heavy house to house fighting. Some British tanks appear in the streets but are rejected by the 5.Kp. In the western part of the town Major Köhler is wounded but stays with his unit. The 2./I.R.73 under Oberstlt. v.Lersner breaks into Denderleeuw from the north. The raising pressure pushes the enemy out of Denderleeuw. The I./73 pursues the retreating enemy who sets up a defence line after on kilometer. The I./73 overruns the enemy there.
The remaining parts of the regiment follow and reach the line Kerkxken Klein-Herlinckhove at 14:35. At once heavy equipment follows to strengthen the bridgehead. Inf.Rgt.73 stays alone with open flanks on the other side of the Dender. 14./I.R.73 secures the flanks. Engineers start to build a bridge.
In the late afternoon Vorausabt. Marcks arrives in the bridgehead.
20:30 verst.Inf.Rgt.73 builds a marching group Menkel (I./A.R.19, I./A.R.55, 3./Pz.Jg.Abt.19, Tle. N.A.19, 3./Pi.Btl.19, one battery II./A.R.60 (10cm)) and continues to pursue the enemy via Audenhoye to Roosebeeke where the regiment arrives around midnight without enemy contact.
After the crossing of the Dendre of this day the III./Inf.Rgt.73 is regrouped as a bicycle Btl. with organized bicycles.
56.Inf.Div., 216.Inf.Div.: receive order to occupy the area north of Gent.
56.Inf.Div.: is attacking towards the city of Gent. The division crosses the Dendre without connection to friendly units left or right.

18.Inf.Div.: crosses the Dendre River and reached the Schelde River south of Tournai. An advance force of Inf.Rgt.54 cannot take the bridge because of British defence fire.

27.Inf.Div.: In the morning II./Inf.Rgt.40 crosses the Maas at Givet and advances via Pt.Doische Romérée to Matagne-la-Petite the daily objective. The division receives order to advance to the area northeast and around Hirson.

211.Inf.Div.: (Unterstellung?) set up for the attack on fortress Naumur on the heights of Arbre.

3.Pz.Div.: resting; The division plans to march off tomorrow.
4.Pz.Div.: In the morning the division gives out the order to start advancing towards Beaumont on two roads at 16:00. The first goal is the area north of Avesnes. The roads are crowded with refugees who cause huge traffic jams and delays. The Schtz.Brig. arrives at the daily objective in the night.
In the evening the Div.Gef.Std. moves to Ecuelin. Gen.Maj.Stever takes command of the division again.
In the evening the division receives order to clean the Mormal-forest and keep it open on the 20.Mai.
22:00 II./S.R.33, 4./A.R.103 march off from Berlaimont towards the Mormal-forest.
Verst. II./S.R.33 moves through the forest without enemy contact but encounters enemy forces as the unit leaves the forest at sunrise. The battalion defends in two groups east of Herbignies until reinforcement arrives on the 20.Mai.
I./Flak-Rgt.Gen.Göring (8,8cm) is attached to the division.
XXXIX.A.K.(mot.)
7.Pz.Div. regroups and rests during the day. Rommel asks Hoth to attack towards the important heights at Arras 30km ahead. After some discussion about the exhausted units he allows Rommel to attack after midnight.
5.Pz.Div.: continued heavy fighting against elements of the 1.North-African and 5.light Div. In the woods of Mormal. Forward elements reach the line of the 7.Pz.Div. in the afternoon.

During the day all enemy attacks from Péronne and from the south into the area St.Quentin are rejected. Especially at Falvy and Essigny heavy fighting of Pz.A.A.4, 3./Pz.1, 3./Pz.Pi.Btl.37 and Sperrverband Müller against attacking French forces which try to attack the rear elements of the division. Oberstabsarzt Maisch severely wounded.
After the division secured Péronne the order just to advance to the Cologne sector arrives.
Pz.Brig.1:
In the early morning the brigades starts to advance towards Péronne and breaks occasional light enemy resistance. Péronne is taken around 16:00 after short fight.
II./S.R.1 crosses the Somme and expands a bridgehead to the south and southwest without enemy contact.
K.1 moves through St.Quentin and secures the canal southwest of Allaines.
In the evening the brigade stands in Flaucourt, 8km northwest of Péronne.
Schtz.Brig.1
Meets just light enemy resistance which makes it possible that the SPW companies can advance in their vehicles for most of the time. In the evening the brigade holds the line Rancourt Höhe 109 south of Laforest Combles.

6.Pz.Div.: breaks the last enemy resistance at Le Catelet and closes up to a line with the XIX.A.K.(mot.) west of the Canal du Nord.

6./I.R.79: A part of the Kompanie under Leutnant Timmer is located in the Bois de Raucourt west of La Besace. Fw.Madest follows with the rest of the Kompanie later. At 06:00 the Kompanie is finally reassembled.
The Kompanie is reorganized: Fw.Madest 1.Zug, Feldwebel Atzmann 2.Zug. Each Zug is organized with four Gruppen. Lt.Seefloth (of 2.Kp.) is the new commander of the 6.Kompanie.
During the day the Kompanie builds fortified positions as enemy artillery fire is expected. The enemy artillery fires from 23:00 01:00 and from 03:00 05:00 in the night to the 20.Mai.

VII.A.K.:
71.Inf.Div.: In the early morning the 1./Pi.Btl.171 under command of Olt.Alfred Germer takes the last armoured turret of Panzerwerk 505. The remaining enemy soldiers in the underground area of the fortress refuse to surrender. During the day the underground part of the fortress is searched. All French soldiers died in the smoke and fire down there. The commander committed suicide in a small supply room.
The 1./Pi.Btl.171 is ordered to Sailly to rest.
Gen.Lt.Weisenberger writes a report to nominate Germer and UO Pape for the Ritterkreuz:
By taking the enemy bunker in the fore field of Panzerwerk 505 UO Pape the 5./I.R.211 was able to advance and the 1./Pi.Btl.171 could assemble at the east of Villy to attack Panzerwerk 505 successfully. Taking the Panzerwerk was very important for the further attack on the Weygand-line.
Olt.Germer took the left corner fortress of the former Maginotline, the well armed and heavily fortified Panzerwerk 505 Ouvrage de la Ferte after several hours fight.

The cemetery of the 71.Inf.Div. is at Noyers-Pont-Mauguis near Sedan.
