Psychological healing in relation to gardening and farming

Research shows that people who live in greener areas are healthier, subjectively and psychologically. What kind of green environment doesn’t seem to matter that much- it could be agricultural, a park or real nature. Nobody would argue with this. Nature encourages us to exercise, explore, and to discover ourselves. It has a soothing and healing influence on us. The presence of well-kept green spaces in a city makes living in a crowded area more manageable. That too is a well-known fact.

The room of the patient can benefit from some colour.

All too often hospital rooms are cold, almost bland and sterile spaces where there’s only room for the necessary. Adding a little plant, or even a picture of nature can be a breath of fresh air for the patient. After all, their room is where they spend the majority of their time. Wouldn’t it be nice to be in contact with the world around you, with living things, even if it’s through a window? Or to create a soothing homely feeling that will benefit the healing process?
Even better would be the possibility for the patient to recharge their energy in a garden. That he or she can escape the rhythm that has been forced upon them, have a break from unfamiliar influences and can keep their body fit with gentle exercise. A little walk can even be a daily goal for some, a goal patients can set for themselves, and should also be encouraged by the nursing staff.

Watching the birds, the running water in the fountain, the babbling water in the creeks or flowers that have just started to bloom…it can have a healing effect. All of this reminds the patient that they’re still part of a bigger picture. In the garden, the patient can have a smoke or socialise with others who are having a stroll. These contacts reinforce social cohesion and that in return has positive effects, the wellbeing and sense of security of the patient.

In contact with the four elements

In the Netherlands extensive research was done into this subject. De Vries, Verheij & Groenewegen reported on this in 2003. They discovered that exposure to nature is very important, and deserves special attention from nursing staff. This exposure increases wellbeing, by breathing in fresh air, or feeling a drop of water on your head. Even observing nature, or the dancing of flames in a fire, can provide people with the peace and quiet in their head that is much needed to recover from stress and mental fatigue. It re-energises and can help develop more positive behaviour. People are more attracted to a natural environment than to a built-up area. These green areas provide a place to work on social contacts. Feeling connected to the cosmos can mitigate the chaos in one’s head, they say. That sounds wise but hollow, but more and more people meditate in nature. In the hippy culture of the sixties, this activity slowly gained popularity. In the public parks of San Francisco, the birthplace of hippy culture, it was a daily occurrence. Today, influenced by the ‘new-age movement’, this way of relaxation is becoming more and more accepted worldwide. Also tai chi, yoga or qigong can be practised actively in most cities. There are even people who hug trees, to feel their energy or experience a natural sense of safety. It can be taken pretty far, but nearly all over the world a tree is a symbol of wisdom, power and support. The tree is literally rooted into the earth, it stands tall. It can serve as an example to the patient who feels like they snapped, or are broken, and provide courage and stability. When someone’s health is already affected, the influence of being in a green area is even greater. It’s easy to imagine that the subjective opinion of people with unbalanced psychological health about their surroundings is even more loaded, particularly when they ‘have to ‘ undergo this for a certain period of time when they’re staying in the institution. While undergoing therapy might be a free choice, your surroundings in the place you get this treatment, aren’t yours to choose. If you’re lucky, the place might feel inviting, but maybe not. What we perceive as a friendly green environment can have a very threatening feel to a patient. Since we, as authors, are both quite sensitive to the beauty and atmosphere of a material environment like a house, a place in the city, a park, a garden…we asked ourselves what impressions we’d get if we were to visit the site of Sint-Kamillus in Bierbeek, to get a closer look. We did just that in a psychiatric clinic in Belgium.

    Garden architecture psychiatric clinic Bierbeek

The community Sint-Kamullus was build on the fertile grounds of the Krijkelberg in Bierbeek. The farmers didn’t give up their land without a fight. In the end, some land had to be repossessed to realise this dream. It was the non-profit organization called ‘Broeders van Liefde’ (Friars of love) that wanted to do something to help men with psychological problems in need. It was a kind of rescue plan that they wanted to set up to ‘save’ 870 souls. The word ‘souls’ can be taken literally, because it was a perfect fit within the plan and ambitions of the protagonists of the Church. Of course this was also strongly present in the Roman Catholic ideology drenched science. The science that covered each and every domain in the knowledge of humankind, physically as well as psychologically speaking. They didn’t just have their mind set on the psychological wellbeing and saving the souls of the patient, but also of the staff and caretakers. They wanted to avoid psychologically ill people ending up in the hands of anti-clerical institutions connected to secular universities and scientific research facilities. Sint-Kamillus was viewed as a sort of practice ground for the medical faculty of the Catholic University of Leuven. Cardinal Mercier may have passed away in 1926, but his ideology concerning this was still alive and well. The symmetrical and even hierarchical-organic structured building represented a religious, social and therapeutic project. It was the architect Alphonse De Vyvere who was commissioned with the creation of this prestigious design. In the jubilee book, the blue print is described as follows: a symmetrical whole, with a central arc that goes through the main entry, the Mariapavilion, the central bathing area, the chapel and the kitchen quarters. Left and right of this line, there are more pavilions. Outside this symmetrical whole, one can find the house of the chaplain and the lazaretto. Across from the train station and a bit further away, you can find the two mansions of the physicians. The symmetry of the design, the numerous pavilions with their function and well thought-out locations, even the height of the buildings and the space they occupy, the design of the park and garden, all represent the ideology behind them. They reflect a certain vision of what this care should entail, a vision connected to the former ideas of what psychological nursing should be like. The fervour resounding from Monseigniour Ladeuze’s heartfelt letters, one can also find in the blueprints of the architecture.

The modular use starts with a modular planting concept. We’re not only talking about different styles of gardens, but also combinations of plants.

Working in the garden was seen as a kind of therapy back then. I assume this connection with nature sadly got lost when (suppressing) medication took over and the chemical industry concerning the use of medication settled into the psychological care sector.

To maintain the park and the garden they now rely on the hired help of professional gardeners, while the patients feel useless. They have an empty look in their eyes.

Other than the ornamental gardens with a recreational function, there are also vegetable gardens and orchards. Dr. Joseph Guislain is known as one of the greatest reformers of psychiatric care in Belgium. Back when the project in Bierbeek was being developed, he was one of their main inspirations for the design, and more. His philosophy was that every patient should have his own space. Working in the garden, as well as farm work, were an important part of his therapy. ‘Arbeid adelt’ (work is ennobling), you remember? Ploughing through mud with bare hands helps a patient to feel grounded again. On top of that, seeing the fruits of your labour, literally, is a very satisfying experience. You feel useful, you feel connected with the world. It provides a sense of pride, you feel the beauty in things and can feel a whole other kind of ‘love’. It strengthens the bond we have with nature. The patient feels useful again and can feel the positive effects of breathing in fresh air, but then we’re talking about what it used to be like.

The first mental clinic in Belgium was built in 1853-1857 and was named after Joseph Guislain. The ‘Hospice Guislain’ was also run by the ‘Broeders van Liefde’ (Friars of Love), and was built in the same sort of structured system of pavilions in the midst of green parks. German hospitals have been built according to this principle since 1860, but in Belgium it’s rare to find parks surrounding hospitals. They have more in common with large warehouses and industrial sites, and the rooms of patients look like server rooms where it’s a challenge to find the patient himself in the midst of all these machines and screens. If one wants to find out how the patient is doing, a glimpse on the graphs (with their little lights and bleeps) is enough. Eye and body contact, care and warmth are kept to a minimum this way. Even the time spent with a patient is measured. Nobody wants to end up in a hospital as a patient these days, especially when you’re a medic yourself. Technologically speaking we’re very advanced, but are we really doing so well if the energetic aspect of care is so strongly neglected?

Man has the potential to heal himself and nature has the potential to heal man.

(lecture about the book 'A deadly cocktail' of Catherine Wheels)

Who I am, doesn’t really matter because I could be you. Don’t be offended by this. It’s meant well, you’ll see:

What I went through determined who I am. What I am, I’m not so sure about, but I’m the accumulation of my experiences and I know now that I’m capable of erasing bad memories, or on the other hand, to see them as lessons or steps in my development. In this way they are removed from all their negativity. That’s why I could write this book 'A deadly Cocktail', hoping that through this transformation of negative experiences that eventually healed me (not only physically, but also psychologically because they cured me of my low self-esteem in order to manisfest myself in a healthy way), I can also help others accomplish this themselves. This means a cure for when they’re sick, but also helping them to stop seeing themselves as limited, but rather as powerful and creative. Being able to do this, this potential, is inside us all. There’s nothing mystical about it!

It’s learning how to think outside the box of well-known concepts of illness.

Concepts like ‘it’s not scientifically proven’ or ‘that can’t be right, because we can’t find an explaination”. Thoughts like ‘I can’t’ or ‘I’m too afraid’, and also ‘If I keep this to myself, I can get a head start on the others’. I, on the other hand, believe you can better share what you’ve been given. You get what you ask for by actively searching for it. That’s the way the universe works.

At first, there was a lot of shame surrounding illness. For a long time, I was a guinea pig concering the ailment. Experiences were exchanged. After many relapses, I became free of my illness and wanted to forget all about it. Along the way, I became associated with my sickness, and no longer with myself. This is why I myself started doing the same thing. This was what people asked me about first. Or my mother. Or sisters.

But who was I? What could I be?

Just to say, I’d had it. I was cured and no longer wanted that association, I wanted to discover what I had to offer. Hide my past of illness, I was too ashamed of it.

Is it about ten years now since I’ve been cured? It went gradually, so I’m not entirely sure. I’m still sensitive. In fact, I’m still highly sensitive. I was born that way. But I wasn’t born with my illness, that’s for sure. I’m talking about extreme asthma and eczema.

I was no longer ashamed, and started realising that I could share my experiences with overcoming this. There are too many people with all kinds of skin diseases, asthma and other SO CALLED chronic stress related illnesses. They too have the right to access this information. They don’t have to learn to live with their illness like they’ve always been told, or become dependent on medication. Of course allergies can be triggers, but there is more to it. It’s the psychosomatics that make you ill, even if you get sick at infant age, like me. Skin disease, asthma, psoriasis, but also obesity, anorexia…all sorts of chronic illnesses are a sign of imbalances, of psychological imbalances, and that is often denied. That’s too much of a sensitive subject. There’s too much shame. That goes for me as well. I had the idea as a child that everything was my fault. I was made to believe this (I felt unwanted and in a way, that was true), so that’s what I made myself think. Not worthy of my own life, that’s what that feels like for a child. Why am I here if I’m a burden to everyone and I can’t make my parents happy? Here is my story.

For the longest time, I carried feelings of guilt. When I was born, all of a sudden my parents’ marriage seemed to fall apart. Because I was born, and mainly because of my illness. My sisters told me they felt like there wasn’t any time for them anymore, all the attention went to ‘that sick child’. That’s how they experienced this, because they were only young children themselves back then. I kept feeling that way, and throughout the years, this feeling kept being fed. I felt guilty about everything. That’s the way I was, I had so little sense of self-worth…

I was somebody who you could use to divert all your problems to, which must be a great thing to have in your life. I had little self-esteem and seemed to fail in everything I did, even eating, health, discovering joy in life…Then one day, a woman called Lieve Smolders burst that beautiful bubble I crafted for myself. It was the last chapter in the journey in which I was trying to find myself, my background, karmic pieces and their motives to act this way or another.

What I didn’t know until then was this: I was born at a time when the relationship between my parents was rocky. Very rocky, because my mother wanted to leave her husband as soon as possible - for very valid reasons - but all of a sudden she turned out to be pregnant. A disaster, and now I know all the circumstances, I would have reacted the same way she did. My mother wasn’t happily pregnant, and she probably even hoped I wouldn’t be born. It made sense in her situation. Eventually, I was born, and was not very welcome at the time. As an infant, you’re born with a soul, an awareness, but you haven’t yet developed an identity. Babies can feel, even in the womb they feel everything a mother feels, because there’s a symbiotic connection between mother and child. After birth that connection remains for a while. A child needs its mother, and not just for the feedings. I had dry skin as a baby, and a nurse ordered my mother to stop breastfeeding me. Almost immediatly I was covered in eczema, because I didn’t get the protection of the antibodies in the breastmilk anymore. Eczema is an auto-immune disease, and my immune system went nuts.

The water blisters and inflammations became so extreme that I ended up in hospital. Being a baby I was subjected to many dietary changes but, after a while, I was dying. They informed my mother of this and she didn’t want to have this on her conscience (this is what it felt like to her, she felt that she was responsible for the cause of my disease). She whisked me away from the hospital, at her own risk. She taught me how to eat all over again.

I wasn’t cured of my illness, but I did get better. Why was that? Because all of a sudden, she did want me. She saw me as a child that didn’t ask to be born, and she was willing to take care of me, so I would make it. Now I did get the love and care I had been in need of all along. She accepted her child, even if that child was also partly ‘his’.

My growth was delayed, I was very skinny at that time and had of course many red, pus-filled patches. Most of the time I didn’t have them on my face, that came at a later age. I really saw this as a punishment. Again, there was lots of shame. More stress, and with this added to the mixture, more symptoms…

At home things were still rocky, so I didn’t like living there. I loved visiting the neighbours or my family, and was often sent off to a friends’ house. At the age of ten I ended up in a boarding school, so that’s where I got to spend the most important years of my development. At home they didn’t have much time to raise me, so I learned how to take care of myself pretty early on. I kept picking up on the energy, but I get that everywhere. When I was 35 years old, someone told me I was highly sensitive, and probably even took in other peoples’ energies, even other peoples’ anger and sadness, because I’m very empathetic. My radar for bad thoughts and approaching danger was very fine-tuned. At home the situation was dangerous. I developed a defense mechanism. Anybody in this situation would.

My solutions until then were drawing, writing, photographing, walking amongst nature - which was good for my balance (I did all of this intuitively, and it turned out to be my salvation). There was also the medical seesaw I was on, with lots of topical steroid and tar treatments at the hospital. My entire body was covered in the tar ointments, and then wrapped in bandages. Your skin cells completely renew themselves every four weeks, which meant that I needed to spend these weeks in hospital. It’s very frustrating having these breaks from life, being in a hospital without actually feeling sick. You can’t hold a book with your tar-covered hands, drawing would leave smudges on the paper. I was bored to death. I never invited many visitors, not until the dead skin cells were burned. After your release from hospital, you look like a new person. You get your lust for life back. At the same time, I was aware of the fact that tar is in fact a highly toxic substance.

One day I was so sick of the relapses that I decided to fix my problems myself. No more medication, no more hospitalisation. It had to be over with. I was given a presciption for a moisturising balm that I carefully saved, and every six months I ordered a new jar of this at the pharmacy. Other medication, apart from paracetamol, elderberry syrup, vitamins and minerals, I wouldn’t touch. I don’t think I’ve had antibiotics more than once or twice in my life, since I’ve proved to be allergic to penicillin as well. The scratch test for allergies I had in my childhood turned red for nearly everything that was tested.  That neutral balm was the only thing that didn’t make me break out. All other things, even from natural brands like Dr. Hauschka I had to throw in the bin. I still do. I was made hypersensitive to everything.

Of course, I started out by changing my diet, and because I noticed that I was less red after every walk, I did lots of walking. Nature became a fixture in my daily planning. I gained strength because of this. These were my happiest moments. But by now I understood that my skin was a reflection of what I felt like on the inside. It gave away the state of my inner self, even when masked by a big smile, so I knew I had to work on myself. I still didn’t accept myself, I even wondered why others, a few people aside, seemed to have no problem liking me for who I was.  Purifying was the keyword. This is what you do when you overcome a trauma. I felt the need to understand things.  I want to know what drives a person, because everything is complex, but can have logical, sometimes very strange reasons. At home we had a lot of family secrets. Lots of things were hidden from the outside world. My family expected me to play along but I wasn’t cut out for this. I like to be honest. I couldn’t keep hiding the anger or lies. My body’s way of expressing this? Through my skin.

Once I started working on myself I got better, became stronger and didn’t get sick quite as often. I knew I couldn’t stay in the role of the victim because I wanted to create my own world. I’ve done everything to make that world a beautiful place. At a certain point in your life, you are responsible for your own here and now, you can give your life direction by setting goals for yourself. Psychological processes lie at the base of this, as well as bad memories and even family karma, but it’s probably best to keep this for another lecture.

My biggest task and possibly the key to my cure, was realising that I wasn’t able to receive much love either, not even from my husband. Someone gave the insight that he couldn’t come close because I wouldn’t let him. I didn’t let anyone come close. I had a lot of friends, but most of the time, I was the person they told all of their problems to. I never told them my own. I build a shield around me, joked around. This is what the eczema did when I still had it, it told people to stay at a distance. In a way, you make yourself repulsive to others, like some people who suffer from obesity do. They build a wall around them, because on the inside, they’re hurt. Eczema is an auto-immune disease, so your body basically defends itself - and your mind - against influences from outside. It goes nuts, your adrenal glands produce too much cortisol, so you end up in a vicious circle. At a young age your body starts telling you what changes nee tob e made in your life. Then, you start realising that you’re not as healthy as others, and at times you look so hideous that you’re ashamed of your appearance, which gives you more stress, and in turn more of a rash…

I knew that it was up to me to break this circle, if I wanted to. And I really wanted to. In all my naivety, because that’s what the doctors would tell you, I thought that if I wasn’t born with it, there was a chance that I could get rid of it too. That it wasn’t chronic, like they tried to tell me. The doctors told me to learn to live with it, because of that. Some dermatologists see themselves as temporary healers. You put on this balm, the rash is gone, you applaud the fast cure the doctor came up with. What they don’t tell you is that you get more and more susceptible, weaker and dependent on the medication. It’s chemistry after all. The illness and the causes of it go to a deeper level, because you ignore all the signals that point to a weak inner balance. But with your balm you look alright again and you can pretend nothing is going on.

So, a mental cause or psychologically.

Your body is a vehicle and every cell has a memory. They contain lots of information. Good and bad memories. If the bad memories and the inner anger grow, then you’re out of balance. That’s what it’s about. I didn’t accept my home situation, I wanted to solve it, but it wasn’t within my capability to do so. Frustration. Anger, and in the meantime you’re poisoning your own body. You can hide this by putting on a big smile, and making jokes like I used to do. But you feel something isn’t right. Sometimes it takes a while, like with more serious illnesses. It’s like that with cancer, even though things like pollution play a part in this too.

Symptoms of illnesses are warning signs that you can’t ignore. Look for the lesson behind the disease. Don’t keep reaching for suppressing medication that makes your body lazy or tired, if this isn’t necsessary. Your body has the ability to heal itself, and it’s your job to call upon that ability when you see signs of illness. This means that by using suppressing medication, you also suppress your own ability to heal yourself. This is a time when your body needs all it’s strength to help heal itself. The psychological approach is very efficient, if you want to reach your own blind spots.

This isn’t a story to point out who’s to blame, but more about forgiveness. Learning how to understand can be very healing, forgiveness will follow. Learning how to forgive is so powerful…it’s not just a Catholic thing. It’s accepting that everybody has their major and minor flaws.

If you have a rough background like I do, then there are:

    1. The processing.
    2. Learning how to enjoy.
    3. Accepting yourself, because you had a tendency to feel unwelcome and stopped accepting yourself.
    4. Learning how to be loved.
    5. Learning how to love.
    6. A sense of happiness. You can be happy with very little, but don’t forget your surroundings (at an adult age, a child can’t choose it’s surroundings) reflect your inner state of wellbeing.

Who here is good at maths? Nobody? That can’t be right? I’m not, but still, I’ll write a maths problem on the blackboard.

70% of our energy is used by our thoughts. So if you have troubling thoughts, and you use 20% of that 70% to relish yourself in your role of a victim, another 20% to keep your inner anger alive every day, at the same time trying to overpower that heaviness that weighs on you, to stay alive, to keep going, then it’s very likely that you’ll be very powerful if you pull this off, but it’s very hard and that balance stays very fragile, as I’m sure you’ll understand. If you end up managing TRUE forgiveness, so the anger fades away and you can see yourself clearly again, then you’ll gain 40% of energy right away. Energy you can then use for positive things that make you happy. Eventually, that 40% will grow to 70% worth of positive energy, and you’ll gain so much. You’ll literally gain years of your life, wellbeing and health. It’s as simple as that, but oh so hard to do. But you’ll have stopped hoping you’ll ever get better by symptomatically treating your disease, you actively make sure you’re actually getting better from within. In a certain way, the power of your wounds is just as strong as your healing power, if you’re willing to transform that negative will. Willpower is the key. Energy is energy. I don’t wish wounds upon anyone, not mentally nor physically. So I’m not going to test this theory. Transform negativity into something positive and save yourself this way when you need to.

Your surroundings are also a mirror, they tell you what you need to work on. Really, try it. Why do you end up in a certain situation all the time? Why does your friend always end up in the same tricky situation? There is a lesson in all of this. Once you learn this lesson, you won’t have to learn it again. Life hands you different lessons, maybe even less tricky ones.

All of this will only work when you’re positive, and don’t stay in your role as a victim (this is very important!). It only works when you’re not constantly asking for attenion to replenish your own negative energy balance. When you’re not feeling sorry for yourself, it will be so much easier to get in contact with your self-healing divine potential. Try to start from a point of acceptance, or self-acceptance and try to take conscious steps or just to follow your intuition. Don’t block out that intuitive road with suppressing medication, that cut you loose from your emotions and tie down your creativity. Then you connect to the source. The Everything. Positive affirmations help too. You visualize yourself as cured and the process will start, because you planted the seed. The seed, that is the thought. You don’t leave the thought, but for the realisation of the thought, you let everything take place. Then eventually, it will happen in reality.

What you can also do is reconnect to your own soul, that too is whole. A person is capable of so much more than he or she’d ever know. They are too dependent on potions and doctors, sometimes even from their caretakers.

Every human being has a divine spark, is self-creating, so can also be self-healing. The problem is that their own thoughts still spread doubt, trick them into not being able or willing to believe that power. We have been taught to see ourselves as sinful and limited. A nice little gift from the Catholic church that has been fooling generations, something that was misunderstood, because this isn’t how Jesus meant it. He said we all have that divine spark inside of us, and we can help in creating our own lives. He showed us how big we really are, but we didn’t understand. Believing in God is believing in yourself. You are your own God. You’re part of the eternal, and you have a part in the power of the eternal potential.

His messages were abused, and even made into something mystical. That secretive blur around what is actually very natural, destroyed a lot. People who have made use of it exude power. It’s about divine potential. Humanity as an organism, with connections between all people, actions and reactions. Here in the West, I encounter lots of rudeness, selfishness, we see ourselves as individuals. If you live in a destructive family for years, it’s impossible to come out without any trauma, no matter how well you protected youself. You share in that destructive energy. You feel what there is to feel. In that case, that connection is harmful, especially when you can’t express yourself about it, are ashamed, ordered to keep silent or keep things in, make them part of you. Those heavy thoughts develop into raging cancerous cells. In a certain way, I expressed that stored energy through my skin. Eczema proved to be my salvation, in hindsight.

Since thoughts are very powerful, negative thoughts like ‘I can’t do it’, ‘I’m not worth it’, ‘I’m not worthy of it’, ‘I’m a nobody’ or ‘everything I do always fails” or even feelings of shame will block your divine potential, and even block your healing process. If your thoughts are positive, of course you and your willpower create very postive conditions to wake up your own self-healing potential and let them do their natural job. Healing isn’t a miracle, it isn’t a coincidence, it’s making use of your natural potential. You plug into the eternal. When I’m in nature, I’m quiet and I’m amazed about the micro and macro beauty around me. I look with eyes filled with love, and because love operates on the highest of frequencies, you yourself function on that frequency of love, with the eternal, The All, the cosmos. Love is the biggest source of power you can find. You can find this in the love for a partner, a parent…And loving yourself is just as important. Don’t act like you don’t love yourself, don’t put on a mask, but ‘really’ love yourself without that mask on, and without falling in the trap of becoming narcistic. You’re worth it. You can also find love in creativity, because you do what you love to do, and you are expressing yourself in a very personal way. You can transform feelings of fear, shame, inner anger and negativity into something positive, into a beautiful creation you can be proud of. YOU EXPRESSED YOURSELF! If creativity isn’t your thing, then this isn’t the way to go for you. You can express yourself through dance, sports, sounds (high upper notes or low ohm-notes, those vibrations are healing, and allow your body to vibrate to that resonance. This brings balance to things that weren’t named, but unbalanced you before).

You can HEAL by looking for BALANCE, through things you love to do, things that make you happy, but also by having an admiration and respect for the union and unmeasurable beauty in nature, no matter which way you discover it.

This is now the biggest challenge that faces medical science, getting man to believe in himself again, in his own power to achieve. Teaching people how to think for themselves again, giving them responsibility, and letting them choose the treatment they see fitting. It’s a quest to find yourself. You go with the stream, but you can discover your own individuality. As a patient you have your rights, nothing should be forced on you. You don’t have to live the life your partner, mother or father want you to live. You’ll find your own way in everything, so you will find your way in healing. The holistic approach (everything is connected, the parts in your body are connected, so mind and body are too) will get more attention soon. Analysis also leads to thinking inside the box, and leads to separation, even separation of soul and ego. When soul and ego find each other again, there will be healing.

    Thank you for paying attention

Ready for a new view regarding (so called) diseases?

Your health is a big concern.

These words count for everyone because everyone wants to be healthy and stay as long as possible healthy. So we obeyed our mothers when they spoke their caring words: “Put on your coat to avoid a cold.” Or: “Wash your hands, because if not you’ll get an infection.” All meant well, but does do those words really cover the truth? In Germany some discoveries where made who opened a total new view on diseases and the cure for diseases. Those results of those discoveries were tested on a few thousand patients. The common system, the system we all know, seems to be based on a hypothetical view. It’s not only about cancer, S.I.D.A., diabetics, MS, allergic symptoms, Lyme, all kind of infections … but also about psychological diseases and patterns. Those diseases seem to be pretty predictable and curable, even autism, A.D.H.S., depressions, relational problems, sexual XX, burn-outs etc…The old biological view starts from a vision without battling. You don’t have to conquer the disease. Diseases are only a functional way of the nature to react on one problem or another. So what we call illness is only a curing process of our body and mind. The real disease has already left the body, but the body is still working on its healing. In most cases these old biological view can offer a therapy that cares about the cause of illness. But in many cases also a real biological cure for the problem can be offered. Understanding this is only possible by being open for new points of view, so someone can understand why the disease has found him, why he have these complaints. What needs to be done to let disappear the symptoms, can be understood as healing signals. The body is working to overcome the disease. Actually you need to forget everything what you learned about diseases and health, just to discover a new world. Only then a whole new perspective will be shown. Only when someone understand the logic laws behind our biology the cure will be complete.

Do you know that many women cured several cancers who lived in their bodies without even knowing it? But this 'marks' can be traced in their bodies. So those women did even not detect the cancers when they were there. No traumatic feelings! So they were even not aware of the 'illness'. Why is that? A strong body will automatically do what needs to be done to cure. But sometimes behavioral patterns stay the same after the curing and body signals are still ignored. And only when body and mind are getting to weak to (re)start the selfcuring process , it gets dangerous... Only then the curing will fail and people can even die.

Bhutan, the land of happiness (or satisfaction)

Bhutanese people fear a cultural decline because of tourism and new business relationships and are also afraid of environment defilement.  They feel obliged to find out good solutions before the problem will arise.  Such a traffic route could expand in a dirt track of waste.  The plastic could even get into the food transit of some animals and could derail the food chain.  Almost every Bhutanese has a mobile phone, even if they prefere to walk barefoot because they are used to it.  With astonishing eyes, they look at the rest of the world via internet and television.  They are very interested in the world, but are also afraid of it.  They don't want let things get that way.  The royal house is now its fourth generation.  The young and very popular King Wangchuk is only the fourth king of the country.  He's the king for only three years now.  His beautiful wife as well had an excellent education.  Because he's very sportive, he often appears on sports matches, but he also send daily messages on the radio to his population.  Those messages are educational about hygiene and wealth, about health care, about contraceptives...

Because the country allows tourism step by step, it had to face with hepatitis A and hiv in a very short time.  It' s pretty strange for them, because in this country, every woman is allowed to marry several men and  vice versa (= polygamy and polyandry).  Even noctural visits to other partners were allowed  until recently and not demonized.  We need some cultural relativism to interpret this without any judgment, but also crime and rape is not common here. During our trip, we didn't see any agitated  drivers or quarreling children.  The children were playful and happy, their parents proud and complaisant.  The positive energy they emit, overtakes you right away after leaving the plane.  The older generation is respected because of their life experience.  Several generations live peacefully in one single stone house.  They have one car, one television and they work on the field in family.  The government has now large machinery for road construction.  The free running horses and cows are everybody's property.  Sometimes somebody stops to caress a horse or a cow.  Animals are not slain, but if one dies, the meat will be divided.  Most of the people live from field labor.   For house and road constructions, a lot of seasonal workers come from India.  Unfortunately, I think that these children are not capable of going to school and they also live in poorly camps.  Does it have to do with their consentiously cultural protectionism?

Bhutan also controlls the wood chop, because a lot of animals, such as tigers, panthers, yaks and a wonderful fauna are still present in those rich wooded mountain landscapes.  The valleys are very fertile and you often find there rice fields too.  In summer, it's relatively hot, but  winters are very cold.  Roads are roadless then and schools closed.   During the winter, the residents often stay inside and they live from stocks, collected on their ceiling and storerooms.  Families often live in one single fired room during the winter days.  Everybody is then busy with homecrafts.  We asked our guide's employer about the secret of their balanced culture.  He said, it's due to the Tantric Buddhism, their state religion that has found it's way in all aspects of social life, that also accept other religious experiences, but is not allowed to be practised.  The vajrayana buddhism allows also changes, but is also alert because everything is focused on the perfect balance.  In this tolerant buddhism, everything is based on gratitude and respect  'for all that exists'.  Buddhists do not repudiate their cultural roots. They are proud of their rituals and there is no pressure to them. They are proud and they use it as a way to stay focused. (Prayers and meditations do not have to be practised in group, Bhutanese practise it all day long while working, sitting on the ground...). Just by the lack of all pressure about religious obligations?

These Buddhists are also tolerant towards other peoples and opinions.  They were interrogating us all the time. According to Tashi, capitalism with his culture of greed and his yearn for 'more and more' can not grip on them,  because people are still in contact with nature and with their spiritual self.  They feel already rich, but in a way we can not imagine.  Their families are honored and their tolerance is legendary.  According to Tashi, the balance is lost in the rest of the world.  Those people look television too: the never ending violence, the disruption of nature and the large-scale environmental defilement. For them, it's like religion has been completely seen in a wrong way because of the loss of spiritual purity.  They are now mainly used for discrimation and violence purposes. "Because of their wars, their cultivated hate and religious violence, whole generations are charged with demons who are controlled by people without knowing.  Our lamas and monks will not let things go that way.  They try to keep the balance, because balance in this world, on this earth, is so fragile.  They form a serious counterweight for all that fights 'the light'."

"We hope that our new freedom will not be developped in a non-freedom by possessiveness, by lust of power from the neighboring countries who are interested in our natural wealth to conquer new markets for the marketing of their products.  The loss of this precious cultural traditions can not be at the expense of so-called development.  Even the acceptance of tourism can not require it's high toll."  His younger colleague says; "This is the reason why we limit tourism and why we only allow 300 tourists a day."  They usually stay two weeks and they are well informed by our guides about our rich culture.  "Wisdom is not in the brains, you know? It is in our hearts that is connected with the thirth eye and everything you observe in anyway.  You have to make the inside and outside world co-operate, this is the way to find balance.  Purity is not the practice of compulsively rituals, because it's not limited to your acts.  Purity of your mind, with tolerance and compassion is much more important because thoughts are powerful.  Jealousy is an example of a very negative emotion that makes you slip away. There are so many other seductions...."

Klik op de afbeelding om de link te volgen

What do people regret when their life comes to an end?

For many years I worked in palliative care. My patients were those who had gone home to die. Some incredibly special times were shared. I was with them for the last three to twelve weeks of their lives.

People grow a lot when they are faced with their own mortality. I learnt never to underestimate someone’s capacity for growth. Some changes were phenomenal. Each experienced a variety of emotions, as expected, denial, fear, anger, remorse, more denial and eventually acceptance. Every single patient found their peace before they departed though, every one of them.

When questioned about any regrets they had or anything they would do differently, common themes surfaced again and again. Here are the most common five:

    1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

This was the most common regret of all. When people realise that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people had not honoured even a half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made.

It is very important to try and honour at least some of your dreams along the way. From the moment that you lose your health, it is too late. Health brings a freedom very few realise, until they no longer have it.

    2. I wish I didn’t work so hard.

This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their children’s youth and their partner’s companionship. Women also spoke of this regret. But as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners. All of the men I nursed deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence.

By simplifying your lifestyle and making conscious choices along the way, it is possible to not need the income that you think you do. And by creating more space in your life, you become happier and more open to new opportunities, ones more suited to your new lifestyle.

    3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.

Many people suppressed their feelings in order to keep peace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming. Many developed illnesses relating to the bitterness and resentment they carried as a result.

We cannot control the reactions of others. However, although people may initially react when you change the way you are by speaking honestly, in the end it raises the relationship to a whole new and healthier level. Either that or it releases the unhealthy relationship from your life. Either way, you win.

    4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

Often they would not truly realise the full benefits of old friends until their dying weeks and it was not always possible to track them down. Many had become so caught up in their own lives that they had let golden friendships slip by over the years. There were many deep regrets about not giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved. Everyone misses their friends when they are dying.

It is common for anyone in a busy lifestyle to let friendships slip. But when you are faced with your approaching death, the physical details of life fall away. People do want to get their financial affairs in order if possible. But it is not money or status that holds the true importance for them. They want to get things in order more for the benefit of those they love. Usually though, they are too ill and weary to ever manage this task. It is all comes down to love and relationships in the end. That is all that remains in the final weeks, love and relationships.

    5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

This is a surprisingly common one. Many did not realise until the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. The so-called ‘comfort’ of familiarity overflowed into their emotions, as well as their physical lives. Fear of change had them pretending to others, and to their selves, that they were content. When deep within, they longed to laugh properly and have silliness in their life again.

When you are on your deathbed, what others think of you is a long way from your mind. How wonderful to be able to let go and smile again, long before you are dying.

Life is a choice. It is YOUR life. Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly. Choose happiness.

Our self-healing ability.          by Dr. Kris Van Kerckhoven (Belgium - Europe)

What is it and how can we enhance (or: improve/enable/incite…) it?

I will not discuss the ‘classics’ of illness and health here, i.e. an unhealthy diet with, on the one hand a shortage of vitamins and minerals, and on the other hand too many harmful substances and a lack of exercise leading to energy blockages and bad circulation. Of course one must eat healthily and get enough exercise, but there is more to it than that. Often, understanding health and illness is like putting together pieces of a puzzle. What follows is just like that — you will see many pieces of our health puzzle, some specific disease complaints, and some reasons behind them. Look at these pieces and observe what happens when we can see the relationships between the pieces as well as the whole picture.

Let me start at the beginning. When healthy children get sick or hurt themselves, they have all the necessary instruments on board to cure themselves. Children heal quickly. They don’t have any blockages, so their energy flows freely and their body is their best doctor. If we compare this to some older people, then it’s obvious that their wounds don’t heal that easily anymore and that diseases often become ‘chronic’.

Consider the self-healing power, which is still intact in a child. It works when there is an acute illness or infectious disease. The child gets a fever and feels tired. This fatigue compels it to rest. The child is in pain, so it doesn’t feel like walking around. It has no appetite and therefore can hardly eat anything. In short, the body gets these symptoms to be able to concentrate on healing. If you want your child or yourself to heal as quickly as possible, the best thing to do is not to take any medication, but to follow your body’s internal language. In case of an infectious disease, give the disease a few days, in expectation of recovery. Do this in confidence. Healing can occur. Put the child in bed (because it feels tired) with a lot of blankets on top of it, because when you are feverish, you feel cold, and let the child eat when it feels hungry. Often you don’t  - or hardly - eat in such a case.

Fever has a function. Because your temperature rises when you’re feverish, your immune system works faster, and bacteria and viruses are weakened. It is therefore very illogical and even counteractive to take antipyretics and artificially cool the body. Rest, so that the energy of your body can go to your immune system. And not eating? What good could that do? Well, a high blood sugar level counteracts the immune system. Bacteria and viruses need sugar to grow and multiply. So, depriving them of sugar is beneficial and usually the body’s natural response.

Let’s look at the chronic diseases, as acute illnesses heal in the end, whatever you do. My experience as a doctor is that too few questions are usually asked when a patient has a chronic disease and that treatment is started far too soon and is mainly symptomatic in nature. A few examples of common chronic diseases are rheumatism, back, neck and shoulder complaints, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia (FM), and myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME).

First of all, let’s look at the complaints one by one:

    1. Rheumatism: the immune system is overactive, so antibodies are produced against the body’s own cells. As a result, inflammatory reactions occur in the joints. Moreover, these reactions are fierce and can eventually even lead to real deformation of the joints.

    2. Back, neck and shoulder complaints: back and neck complaints often go together with disc complaints (bulging of the intervertebral disc or hernia). Back, neck, and shoulder complaints involve tense muscles. As a result of this, the patient can get ‘stuck’ (lumbago, frozen shoulder).

When having back and neck complaints, the nerve can be affected with radiant pain and numbness. Paralysis can even occur.

    3. With CFS,FM, and ME, an alternating pattern of many fluctuating symptoms occurs, and usually there are also complaints of fatigue and exhaustion, muscle tensions, pain in tissues, muscles, joints, inflammation, poor sleep, a touch of flu, anxiety, as well as back, neck and shoulder complaints. There is magnesium loss, often a headache or migraine, and gastrointestinal disorders (sometimes even leaky gut and intestinal candida). Concentration and memory problems occur, and a general feeling of not being able to recover. In the morning there is a feeling of exhaustion, like being hit by a tram or having run a marathon, rather than a feeling of being refreshed. Often there are also immunity problems, such as allergies or intolerances, thyroid disease, lupus, eczema, rheumatism or infectious diseases.

Why is the immune system overactive or disordered in the case of rheumatism, eczema, or CFS, FM, or ME? What actually regulates a good functioning immune system?

The immune system is very complex, but if we have to name one substance that plays a crucial role, it is cortisol. Cortisol has a regulatory function, in particular an inhibitory effect on immunity and the inflammatory reaction. In short, autoimmunity or an overactive immune system and unrestrained inflammatory reactions are signs of cortisol deficiency.

Why would a disc bulge? Because too many burdens are laid on the back?

That is a possibility. But if that were always the case, only dockworkers, movers and bricklayers would have back complaints and that is not the case. Why can a disc bulge at a normal load? Because the dorsal muscles are too tense. So, muscle relaxants are often given in the treatment. Muscle tension is normal, but if there is too much tension too often, then there is no balance. Tension is normally followed by relaxation. That points in the direction of the Orthosympathic Nervous System (OSNS). So, to put it briefly again, a disc bulges as a result of an overload of muscle tension. This also applies to shoulder complaints. And that’s due to overactivity of the OSNS.

How can anyone be already so exhausted in the morning?

In a healthy person, the cortisol levels rise when getting up in the morning. Cortisol has the following effects on the Central Nervous System (CNS): alertness, a feeling of energy, and a feeling of having rested enough. Why would anyone sleep badly? There are many reasons, ranging from psychological symptoms to too much worry and different types of pain. But it is interesting that a good night’s sleep fundamentally requires activation of the Parasympathic Nervous System (PSNS).

Why do you sometimes have a touch of flu?

In humans, temperature is regulated by the hypothalamus. A touch of flu occurs via a disruption of the hypothalamus. Why do you lose magnesium? The magnesium balance in the human body is controlled by aldosterone. So, a loss of magnesium can indicate a problem with aldosterone. That is interesting, because aldosterone is made in the adrenal glands, and so is cortisol. So we can go a step further and ask: why are there cortisol and aldosterone abnormalities? Because there is something wrong with the adrenal glands. But we have already discussed the hypothalamus. The adrenal glands and the hypothalamus are both located in the so-called HPA-axis (Hypothalamus – Pituitary – Adrenal). And it is exactly the hypothalamus that plays a crucial role in regulating the balance of the OSNS and the PSNS.  The pieces of the puzzle are beginning to fit together. Why does your stomach ache and why do you have intestinal problems? A good digestion can only be achieved thanks to a well functioning PSNS. If there are problems, perhaps it is due to an overactive OSNS. Additionally, headaches and migraine are also muscular tension diseases, because these involve tension headaches as a result of the contraction of the muscles around the skull. Migraines are caused by a muscular tension around the blood vessels in the brain. Muscular tension is also an indication of an overactive OSNS.

If we put together all of these pieces of the puzzle and keep asking ourselves why, in the end we come to a final question: why is the hypothalamus not properly regulated? Is the hypothalamus activated by emotions and stress?

Absolutely, howeverr it’s important to make a distinction between primary (non-psychological) and secondary (psychological) emotions. An example of a primary emotion: you are standing in a green pasture and you feel relaxed. You hear something behind you, you look around and all of a sudden you find yourself face to face with a bull! At that moment (and even before you are able to think, hence completely independently of your psyche and totally instinctively!) the hypothalamus is activated. This regulates two things at the same time: the switch from PSNS to OSNS and the activation of the HPA-axis, which results in an increase of cortisol.

If you act on such a primary emotion, or in other words, if you perform the (short) action your body has just given you the energy for, then this hypothalamus activation is merely temporary. In other words: you run away, you jump over the fence and then everything goes back to square one (the hypothalamus normalises, the OSNS weakens, the PSNS is strengthened, and the cortisol level drops again).

If you do NOT act on a primary emotion (for example, if you don’t run away from the bull, if you convince yourself that you can handle the situation, but actually you can’t, if you do some breathing exercises and yoga and think that’ll do just fine, if you try to ‘let go’, or swallow some pills to suppress the complaints), then the hypothalamus remains overactive, the adrenaline level remains very high and if this situation is chronic (i.e. weeks, months, or years on end), exhaustion symptoms and other problems will develop. Your adrenal glands will become exhausted, your cortisol will no longer be able to react properly to stress, you will lose magnesium, the inflammatory processes will work overtime, as will your OSNS, etc.

So when you’re suddenly standing in front of that bull and you have all kinds of chronic complaints like exhaustion, muscular tension, and inflammations, in my opinion it is a wrong and short-sighted attitude to ask for a pill to be able to cope with the situation. On the other hand, addressing your self-healing powers is far more satisfactory. Medication will try to suppress some of your complaints, but will never be able to have a permanent effect, because you’re not eliminating the cause of the illness. Therefore you better run away from the bull, as you would normally do and not go against your nature. Get yourself to safety. After such a strenuous moment there should be relaxation. The body does what is necessary naturally.

You address your self-healing power by trying to obtain a well-functioning HPA-axis and a well-balanced OSNS and PSNS. This can be achieved when you stop suppressing your primary emotions and when you learn to act accordingly. It is quite a process to learn what primary and secondary emotions actually are. Because working with the secondary (the psychological) emotions doesn’t help, doing so can even make things worse. It is certainly difficult to learn to respond to your primary emotions and not to suppress these emotions any longer. Changing bad habits is not always simple.

Moreover, it may help to do some physical exercise, because suppressed emotions settle themselves in your body. Often this is learned behaviour, which is sometimes difficult to recognize. Positive thinking, faith in nature, or being spiritually active are also effective because they are all PSNS-stimulators.

To some, these insights may seem new, but none of them really are. You can easily find them all in medical literature, except perhaps for the distinction between primary and secondary emotions. Yet in medical practice, little is done with this knowledge. There is still an almost sacred belief in medication.

This can, however, be changed through scientific research and through open communication with others. And this is exactly one of the life goals of the undersigned.

It's strange but getting or being familiar with 'the way things are going', even when it goes wrong, even when information is not free and independent or even manipulated by big companies and lobbying groups and the free will of the patient/men is blocked, this is the real danger (it slips in like silent poisson). If you have not a big scoop and you didn't visit court as being accused, journalists are not interested in the strange patterns of society. So they even help to re-establish things, by taking all this for granted, by ignoring this warning and admitting al this as being our reality. Not being aware that things can be really handled differently (like in other countries) and enlarge real lives, is the real danger.

Reflections and future directions in medical ethnomusicology

    by Dr. Benjamin Koen (China)

    Origins and Expressions

To say that the relationship between music, health, and healing is as ancient as music itself, perhaps creates a false dichotomy that, in their origin, music and healing were separate or unrelated entities, and could therefore be combined into a relationship. Rather, perhaps in the earliest human experience the two were one unnamed reality and practice—what we might today call musichealing, musicwellness, or musicmedicine. In one track of contemporary research that explores the dynamics of music, prayer, and meditation in cultural and clinical contexts of health and healing, a similarity exists where, although music, prayer, and meditation can have independent and combined expressions to effect healing, they also very often are one and the same—an indivisible whole.1

Reaching into the past to unearth some semblance of the origins of things, or to answer contemporary questions that relate to the human condition, always brings with it even more questions to fuel our inquiry—the path can be endless, albeit a great adventure. To provide a detailed account of music and healing (musichealing, musichealth, musicmedicine) in the human experience, moving from the mist of speculation about origins and pre-history, into ancient and modern history, and finally the present, and future directions would be an impossible task in the space provided here. Indeed, the ethnomusicologists, anthropologists, musicians, healers, researchers, practitioners, therapists (e.g. music, dance, drama, and expressive arts therapists), physicians, social and health scientists, among others that have in various degrees contributed to laying the foundations, the creation, establishment, and development of medical ethnomusicology are far too numerous to mention here.

Moreover, medical ethnomusicology is certainly not the only discipline concerned with the subject of music and healing. There are multiple areas and disciplines within and without academia, research, and applied practice that often share goals and approaches with medical ethnomusicology—indeed, at times there is such a common ground between disciplines or people involved in this work at the levels of research, application, and practice, that differences become secondary, if not irrelevant. This is often, but not always best seen in people who have significant experience, have studied, or hold degrees or certifications in more than one area, or who have in-depth study and practical experience apprenticing or learning from culture-bearers and traditional teachers. At the same time, many programs are increasingly approaching their discipline-specific education and training from an integrative or holistic knowledge perspective—that is, significantly drawing from any and all areas of knowledge that directly inform any given subject within their discipline.

In addition to medical ethnomusicology, the areas that are concerned with music, sound, health, wellness, prevention, and healing are increasing and include medical anthropology, the medical humanities, cognitive ethnomusicology, applied ethnomusicology, applied anthropology, music performance, social medicine, medical sociology, global health studies, music therapy, dance therapy, expressive arts therapy, art therapy, arts in medicine, drama therapy, poetry therapy, sound therapy, sound studies, sound healing, the arts, and several disciplines across the research, scholarly, and professional areas in medicine, including holistic, integrative, complementary, and alternative medicine (HICAM), psychology, psychotherapy, neuroscience, cognition, the social and health sciences and allied fields. Additionally, new tracks within music studies are increasingly including similar concerns in their endeavors—this can be seen for instance in the new tracks of music and community engagement and music and wellness.

Notably, as this list expands and becomes more diverse, there is a corresponding increase in unity of thought with respect to an awareness and acceptance among scholars, researchers, and practitioners that music and related practices can play a significant role in human health, wellbeing, prevention, and cure. Now, the time is propitious for this journal’s readership to significantly advance endeavors within and across disciplines, within and without academia, in research, applied practice, and treatment with respect to music’s multiple and diverse beneficial, functional, therapeutic, medical, preventive, wellness engendering, and healing roles for human beings.

Dr. Ravindra Gangwani (ayurvedic doctor) about health care in the West:

"I am Dr Ravindra Gangwani practising alternative medicine Ayurveda for last 18 years in Pune (India). I have been benefitted greatly throughout my career from the professional development and rich and supportive environments, where I have been fortunate to able to develop my practice. I have behind me a wealth of experience which I feel has contributed to my expertise in the field of Healthcare. I am thankful to share my experience of Healthcare in the western countries. I was asked by my friend from Belgium Anne Marijn Somers, who is a writer, to write about my personnel views and experience about Healthcare in the western countries. Last year I was fortunate to travel to Belgium for three weeks and this year in Germany for four weeks. After doing health consultation with many people here in Europe I developed my views to understand about Healthcare. Also many people from Europe as well as from different countries come to me in India for the treatment in my MBS Ayurvedic Center (Mind Body n Soul) in Pune. While describing about the healthcare in Europe it will be easy for me to describe about the illnesses that people are suffering in Europe. The commonest illness was like Cancer and Nervous Disorders like Alziheimers, Parkinsons, Neuralgia etc. When we refer the textbooks of western medicines the cause of the diseases is unknown. When we don’t know the cause, how can we cure the illness? So yes this is the big question mark and challenge for today’s Healthcare system. So when we treat the illnesses like this we take the pills which work on the symptoms and that is not the cure. In short people have to bear it rest of the life. Also at the same time people start searching Healers and Alternatives medicines from country to country, but where this journey come to an End?  Yes my friends it ends at HOPE. During their journey of Hope some of them come to me with Hope. OK! Now you will be curious to know how I treat these people. Yes sure I will tell you. I show them the way of Life, the path of Health along which they will reach their destination. We all know “WHEN THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY” So I increase their will power to fight and conquer against their illnesses. Yes this is called Holistic way of Healing with Nature.

Above all in today’s jet age, no time, everybody wants to run the race of Life at the cost of Health and they stop only when something goes wrong with their Health. Why not people follow the Quote which all of them have learn in the school when they were young. Yes you are Right. “PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE” As in the above conditions there is no cure, but there is of course Preventions of the illnesses. So am the Doctor who beliefs and practices Preventive Healthcare Systems. So for you and your children you should follow Preventive Healthcare System which is not expensive and affordable as compared to the cost of illnesses and Painful sufferings. As you pay your bills regularly like insurance etc. kindly make a small bill for Preventive Healthcare on regular basis.

So know all get ready for the Change in Life, I would like to share some Healthy Guidelines to follow for Healthy Future:

    1) Routine or Regime: First and foremost important thing one should follow is proper routine or regime designed by one own self. The basic rule is “whatever we can do for ourselves to improve our own health is more effective in the long run than what another person or doctor can do for us” Only when we have failed in our own efforts does the healthcare professional or clinical facility become necessary. Even then their value is temporary, to bring us back to the point of properly caring ourselves. Often small things we do for ourselves, such as giving up wrong foods, do more than taking many medicines or consulting many doctors. In short there is no substitute for our own right living. One has set him/her self to right regimen of particular body type covering all aspects of our nature, physical, psychological and spiritual.

    2) DIET: Diet can be an effective treatment in itself. Dietary treatment is usually the safest therapy. Right diet is the main factor in the treatment of the physical body that is built up by food. Without changing our diet we cannot expect the body, which is its product, to change fundamentally whatever else we may attempt. Wrong diet is the main physical cause of disease. By correcting the diet, we eliminate the fundamental cause of disease. “We are what we eat” What we eat affects our emotions and can create a predisposition for both psychological and physical disorders. Just as wrong emotions can upset our digestion, so wrong digestion can upset our emotions.

Ayurveda has described the origin for all the diseases is “LOW DIGESTIVE FIRE”. In Sanskrit language it is said “ Sarva Roga Appi Mandaagni”  This means all disease have their origin from low digestive fire that is “Indigestion” and “Indigestion” is because of wrong food. So my experience in the practice about diet was all opposite what was mention in Ayurveda. Many people are having habit to eat cold storage food, bread etc. which is very low in digestive fire energy, which over the period of time leads to indigestion, the starting point for the process of illness.            Many people had habit to cook once a week and eat the same food for whole week and this is one of the predisposing factors for Cancer.                                                                                       In females use of hormones beyond certain limits in their younger age also increases the chances of Cancer. It was shocking for me when the females in their teenagers are given contraceptive pills right from the age of 12 to 14 years for a very long period of time, like 10 to 15 years.  There are many such more experience which I got during my practice with the western population.

    3) Deficiency of Vitamin B12 leads to many nervous disorders like Alzihmers  which is also on the rise in the western population and again the cause is related to your diet habits and metabolism.

So now you all got the idea how indigestion leads to the all the diseases. So we at our center do all the detox programs. {Panchkarma } Panch means Five and Karma means therapies, so there are five different Purifications therapies described in Ayurveda for detoxifying your Body and Mind. One of the detox program which we do for Indestion (Low in Digestive Fire) is colon cleansing. Most of us suffer from an accumulation of toxins, undigested food particles or waste materials, called Ama in Sanskrit. Ama (Toxins) not only causes diseases, but also blocks the assimilation of nutrients. Without first clearing this accumulation, the right herbs and foods cannot be absorbed properly. Most diseases are Ama-caused or Ama-related, including chronic disease like allergies, arthritis and cancer.Ama weakens the immune system, causes the body to attack itself, and imbalances the metabolism. Ama is opposite in qualities to Agni or Digestive Fire. When the Agni is good, Ama will not be formed. When Agni is Low Ama easily increases.

So for preventive and curative purpose one should do Ayurvedic colon cleansing.

Of all the vital organs in the body, the one that suffers the most abuse from modern dietary habits is the colon. A healthy colon will completely eliminate feces, toxins, parasites, bacteria, and dead cells. In many instances, though, this waste accumulates over months and years, becoming impacted over time. Astonishingly, it’s estimated that many people have 10-12 pounds of rotting and undigested feces and food in their digestive tracts.            Colon cleansing is done with Ayurvedic medicated enemas.

Why is the colon so important? (small story)

One day the body got together and decided to have a board meeting. Here’s what went on behind closed doors. There was intense discussion to determine:

WHO WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE BODY?

The BRAIN was the first to speak. “Without me, nothing would be accomplished.”
Then the HEART spoke up. “Without me, pumping blood to your brain you could not function.”
The ARMS laughed. “You’re both wrong, without me to put food in the mouth, nothing would work.”
The LEGS quickly added. "Without me you couldn't get your food"
The STOMACH said, “Without me, your food would not digest.”
The LUNGS bellowed back, “Without me, you couldn’t breathe.”
The EYES blinked, “Without me you could not see.”
The KIDNEYS snorted, “Without me, you could not detoxify and eliminate.”
The COLON meekly spoke up. “I am important. You need me to eliminate all of the garbage from your systems.”
Everyone laughed and made fun of him. “How can you be as important as we are. You’re just a smelly old sewer.”

The poor colon...his feelings were hurt. He turned away, and thought, I’ll show them. HE SHUT DOWN!! Then he sat back and watched what would happen.
    The BRAIN was stupefied.
    The HEART’S beat was weak.
The ARMS and LEGS were weak and couldn’t move.
    The LUNGS breathing was shallow.
    The EYES became cloudy.
    The KIDNEYS quit.
Then the COLON looked around and decided it was time to call another meeting.
It wasn’t too lively this time, but everyone was in total"
     agreement.
The COLON WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT ORGAN.

    Diet modifications

Drink pure water. Reduce coffee and all other caffeinated beverages, carbonated drinks, high-protein animal foods, refined sugar, frozen food and processed food. Eat lots of fresh green vegetables, fruits and fruit juices. Include whole grain cereals - they promote the production of the brain neurotransmitter serotonin, which induces a greater sense of well-being. More diet can be plan individually according to the Body Type described in Ayurveda.

So my dear friends  there is no end to my writing about my experience in the field of healthcare. So to conclude with the note CHANGE in Diet and Lifestyle is the need of hour to Live Healthy and Beautiful Life. So if you follow Preventive Healthcare Model you can LIVE YOUR LIFE TO THE FULLEST. know your health, you are your own Doctor. Talk to yourself, listen to your Body, and Love yourself.

    BE HAPPY AND HEALTHY.

    Dr. Ravindra Gangwani (BAMS,PGDHHM,PGDEMS,PDCR).

Act and rest, act and rest, act and rest
Make up your mind before acting
Know to learn the real you
Do what you like to do
Marry the one you love or don't marry if it's not your pathway
Only take and raise children, if you can take care of them and you can share love
    Happiness is a birthright
    Be aware about your happiness,
Be aware of your dark side too, everyone has a dark side
    Try to be real
Be aware someone can get lost, but that can reconnect again too
Be aware that your environment only reflects your inner and will show the parts that need healing
    After rain comes sunshine
Be aware that you're nature too, so respect that nature
Be aware that a healthy body needs healthy food in every way
Be aware that you need a soul, that the group has a soul, that the world has a soul
Be aware of your spiritual nature (you don't have to into a religion, to be or feel spiritual)

Be aware that your own thoughts can determine yourself, can give you limits in grow, in potential, in connecting with people, can even make you sick too. Thoughts are so powerful!

Nature and even sports and music, can bring you in that spiritual state too
Be aware that we're all connected with energy lines or bounds, as we're energybodies too
You'll attract more easy people of the same energy vibration
Be aware that symptoms of illness can give you a signal that you have to act, to think differently or re-adress your life.
If you neglect that those signals, the illness can get far more worse. So don't only heal your body superficially, but the things that needs to be cured (the body will follow automatically)
Health care has to be about healing and comfort for the patient, not about cutting him off from the whole
Drink water as the most natural medicine there is
Listen to (healthy) music, as a natural medicine
Being creative, functions as a natural medicine too
    Use your body, so move
    Use your heart, so feel
Use your mind, so think for yourself
Use your eyes to watch, and see
Use your intuition, so stay connected to the oneness of the world and all its participants
Look for balance in every way (micro and macro)
Process traumas form the past (even from former lives) to purge and to feel more free and relieved
Act moral, you will generate happiness, friendship, more good things in life
Avoid alcohol & drugs, or medicine that makes your body and mind lazy, dependent
    Avoid sugar
Avoid hormones who are deregulating your body (we are dependent of the moon and cosmos too, have to stay in the natural flow)
Avoid negative people, but see yourself as you are
    Accept positive criticism
    Hormones can let grow cancer,
Be aware, suppressing medicine can take away the symptoms but in meanwhile it can bring diseases to a deeper level because you avoided to listen to the message brought out by your body
If ego and soul lost each other, they have to connect again to get more whole

I can be you. I'm one of you, that's for sure...

    - I think that everybody is born equal (woman and man, all races etc...) and stays equal (men's individual worth is not related to status or money I mean)

    - I think you can learn by reading books, by being at school but you learn the most by life experience, by living between men, with your feet 'on the ground'

    - I think you can learn from the poor and the rich, from the intellectual and the non-intellectual

    - I think the environment/earth is now a big concern for everybody

    - I think we've to work together to face our problems, we can't no longer ignore that cooperation makes us strong

    - I think everything is connected, 'is one'. So everything you do has also a consequence (the law of action and reaction, so sometimes it will be better not to react to step out the never ending circle, but to reflect)

    - I think everybody is born gifted, but you have to search those talents if you don't see them immediately

    - I think everybody has a selfhealing power, a big potential that he/she can explore

    - I think everybody can be considered as a co-creator of his/her own life. You have to do some thinking, set goals, act....

    - I think men have a spiritual/philosophical nature, but the spread of religion is cultural, geographical and even political minded

    - I think charity is very important but can never be related to other goals, than we speak about opportunism and not about charity

    - if there is a God, God can not be claimed by any religion, because that God loves us all. We can even not abuse that God or our religion to find a reason to fight or to make war, to make difference or distinction between men

    - to me God is awareness, love and compassion but what God means to you is up to you because there is freedom of thinking

    - there is good and bad in the world. What is good, 'feels' good but than you may not loose the ability to feel (by being angry, by being too disappointed in men or by being too rational).

    - What is bad can be felt as bad by everyone unless dogmatic rules we claim will avoid us to make the difference between good and bad.

    - I'm a spiritual person too, but I took wise things out of different religions. Sometimes I don't even know where I took it originally as I traveled a lot (my age: 49) and I spoke to so many different people from all over the world. I consider myself as neutral or impartial but in my opinion, I think that's okay too.

    - I live among men, not above, not below. I’m almost invisible

    - I don’t claim these values, I only try to collect them, spread them by the word and take them as the lead in my own life by living my own life experience. Sometimes I’m successful and sometimes I fail because I’m not a profete, just someone like you

    - for this reason, Catherine Wheels is not my real name, so you can not confuse me with these values. I mean, I can’t claim them.

Klik op de afbeelding om de link te volgen

At random impressions of New York (winter 2014-2015)

Although I was almost persuaded I was going to hate this big city, because of the concrete and the tarmac, and the lack of sunlight and greenery maybe? But this was not the case. It's even a rational use of space, not spoiling the open space (soil and see). I had it all wrong. My son and I we liked New York (Manhattan) very much. Why? Because of the favorable people who walk their daily tracks between home and working place and back, because of the amusing atmosphere, because of the mixed up cultures who live together in peace and without fighting, because of the people with headphones who were singing their favorite song aloud and without blushing? Or because there were less tourists in february, and less tramps too because of the cold (minus 20°)? Beggars do confront me with poverty and the big differences in luck between people in the world. So I feel sad at once. In Africa, Europe, Asia and America. New Yorkers seem to live peaceful together in a melting pot, but total equality between races, I don’t think so. I do did notice black people did more jobs on the streets, regarding garbage, delivering pizza’s… No equal chances in life? Not in America and not n Western-Europe when you have a darker color? When I was there for a few days, I was totally absorbed as being one of them. One of this colourful melting pot. Quiet often tourists asked me to show them the way, but why did they take me for a New Yorker? Probably because I had no tablet in front of my face to take pictures, and I was not looking as if I was a lost person with a backpack on my back. Anyway, there is nothing difficult about it, because those roads and lanes have numbers. Just count the numbers please.I talked to a christian Egyptian cap driver who only lived there for three years. He had been a teacher in Egypt, even studied the Koran of the islamists. They all have to in Egypt because different world religions are represented in this country. He emigrated because with that salary he could hardly rise his family. If he liked his new job? I miss the teaching, but it’s okay. I have a better live here. I met a black female guide on the hop-on-hop-off bus. Here explanation was so different from her male colleagues, but I guess it was because she led here soul speak, about situations of nowadays and in the past, about the history of places. She let us fantasize about the past: “Imagine, you were that Irish woman, who came by boat, to find a better future in America…” A guide with a personal voice, a broad view. She mentioned New York offered the tramps free beds in an old psychiatric clinic. A fine gesture, but did people forget that those dark buildings have stored a very dark energy too…? Are they really feeling better, by being kept in scary buildings? I met a young guy who had recently discovered Jesus. Before he was without religion, and just purchasing good notes, lovely girls, a good job with a lot of money and nice cars. Like every school boy, so he said. But he had it all and still he felt empty. Now he had found new goals in live, and his new believe made him feel more complete… He showed me the old baroque theater that was turned into a temple for christian people. He was very enthusiastic and didn’t want to readdress or force me in his direction. He didn’t knew about the revelation of scandals in West-Europe done by the church, but he seemed to understand that a purification had to be done. Not by making war or fighting, but by revealing those abuse done by bishops and priests. Institutes of power have a strange effect on people. Some people think they have to obey (and boarding school children or orphans don't have a choice), and others think that they became untouchable. Why should religious representatives be untouchable, they can get of the road, get mad and starting acting like criminals too! He asked me for my personal goals in life, and about my family and than he said some prays aloud. I thanked him for his kindness.

What I did hate in America were the news reports. In a big country they like to simplify things, so it seemed to me. T simple to be true. They think between frames they install themselves. But is that reporting about truth? Is it even objective? Being a journalist myself, I even became so mad that I wanted to visit a journalist of the Fox News myself. But that was not possible. You can address them a letter, so they answered. But I’m here now, my hotel is only 100 meters away.  But that letter will of course be without answer...  (I posted one, so I found out.) Those news stations define the views (or the glasses?) of the American people on the rest of the world. And because there were things told about  the situation (attacks) in Belgium at that moment, I could see that their vision didn’t stroke with reality at all. The perspective of people, and bad news reports from ivory towers who put filters on the world) can poisoning our mind. Images and even live films seem to give prove, but they're only trying to convince you with'so called evidence'. The press can be so dangerous for world peace. Not only in America, in England, in Belgium.... everywhere. Our world is full of communication, but what about the quality of real interaction between people...? Did computers replace everything? Do invite them distortion because of the lack of human contact and double reality check...? Or is our reality only our cultural loaded illusion?

Our oldies in western countries as for example Belgium...

They don't live with younger families anymore.  They even get little respect. We often see them as a burden. Sometimes it is reality.  Not everyone was kind to his children.  They didn't all take care for their children, so what can you expect as a service on return?  Intitutional care. If they can be of any utility, they are often overexploited by joung families or by one of the many one-parent families. Otherwise grandparents set too many limits and youth are on their own, what is very difficult at this time. They are often very dominating during education, but grown up with other postwar values. Such interferences are shunned by younger generations. The toll for all this kind of disagreements is very high.  Even for the state.  Not uncommon there were generation conflicts whereby old parents were avoided.  They may take care of the grandchildren, but they better keep their mounth shut.  Or they better take their medicines that make them dependent from the care system.  Too much parents depend on drugs.  That's why they aren't themselves anymore.  They vegetate. When they are not capable of taking care of the children nor themselves, they are often placed in homes, where they are strongly uprooted and disoriented.  Some parents choose to go by themselves, but let's be honest, they will only go if they can afford a housing that is big enough, humane care, enough freedom and nice leisure.  Or else, it will feel like imprisonment you must stay in until you die.Only if you can afford the luxury, you can choose 'yourself' for an uprooting from the community in which you have spend the biggest part of your life.  In most cases, rest spots are forced by the children who do not want to care. Nevertheless to spread the care is not that heavy.  Kangaroo houses are also a good solution because you don't live together nor completely unrelated.  You respect eachother.

Real friendships in homes are often terminal friendships and this makes them extremely depressed, because one disappears after the other.  They remain limited to the warmth of the staff, because they hardly see little children who are the source of lifejoy.  It is the only (but time-limited) warmth those people can get.  Those carers keep the contact  superficial for self-protection, because after a short period, they see them leaving. They cannot afford a concatenation of losses and they have too less time per 'patient'.  Time is money and dislocation is a good word in this situation.

About love, but different from what it suggests in your mind

In my opinion, we do come from the stars and as a soul, we are already 1000s of  years old.  Our mortal body is only a vehicle for that soul.  Together, they give us life, but often our soul is too much separated from our ego.  This is often problematic because how can you feel 'one' or how can you feel good with eachoter or become 'one' with all and 'the all'?  Even the connectedness with nature is then hard to find.

I think, our life has a spiritual basis.  If you can't fill up the void in yourself by 'believing in' your connectedness with the cosmos (but you can also entitle it as believing in God or JHWH = the unnameable, the reason why there are no vowals) and can not handle no morality in your life or not sufficiently consistent, you wander about aimlessly.  Some fill up this void by looking for fame, stardom, business status or having power of money, loveless sex. They somethimes fill it up in knowledge, but it remains imperfect or not satisfying the gap.

Love in broadest sense, is what we miss by the separateness  and computers do help because they almost reduce personal contacts etc and the real life. I experience it myself, because I make less efforts to meet people.  To come back to some people who ask me for rational evidence, often they are investigating spiritual things very intensively, but this desire remains even unsatisfied, because they hope to find by rational proof and because I can not give them this about irrational things (I cannot  pass on my personal spiritual experiences to them), they can really got upset about that.  The only thing he has to do is letting go his holy faith in science.  Science is good of course, but not if it blocks experiences or put limitations on those experiences (double blind proves etc…) Besides, our universe contains basically mathematic laws.  Laws we cannot possibly understand with our limited brains.  We will never be God, even if we have that much knowledge, hidden knowledge, a divine spark in us.  Consequently, we remain limited, but at the other hand, we are bigger and stronger than we think.  Via our spiritual strength, we can for example cure ourselves etc...because a lot of diseases are trauma-bound and have therefore a pycho-emotional basis.  We must at the same time remember our real strenght and not give it to others and at the same time, we have to experience our own rational limitations.  This is, in my opinion, 'heaven and earth'.  Not floating whereby you lose grounding.  Not imagining yourself to be divine by a holy faith in science or religions, but keeping your feet on the ground and staying connected with everything what determines your identity...
