People struggling with severe obesity are increasingly embracing bariatric, or weight-loss, surgery. But the procedure is invasive, irreversible and never without risks. New research conducted on rats meizitang zisu describes a nonsurgical approach utilizing an experimental "gut sleeve" procedure.
It's hoped that if the procedure eventually works in humans, it might give a more effective and less costly option to weight-loss surgery, and reduce related health issues.
The procedure, which still needs to be tested in humans, would place an "intestinal zi xiu tang 60 barrier sleeve" by endoscopy, which involves inserting a skinny tube with the mouth into the stomach. An adaptable, nonpermeable silicone sleeve would be placed near the end of the stomach, reaching towards the first area of the small intestine. If desired, the tube might be removed by endoscopy later on.
