Interview met Steve Garrigan
Who are your heroes? Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Dave Groh, Sam Cooke, to name a few.
What is your favourite place in Ireland? Swords is a great town, we also spend a lot of time at the Old Bailey in Howth. It's beautiful. Anywhere in Galway or Kerry, my nana will be happy I mentioned Kerry.
What is your most treasured possession? My phone, I lost it a few times and lost a lot of notes and lyrics I write, which is a killer.
What makes you angry? Animal cruelty, racism, small mindedness in general. But on a lighter note: stepping on a plug barefooted first thing in the morning.
What book influenced you the most? Bob Dylan's 'Chronicles' really opened up my eyes to the power of music. It also made me fall in love with New York without ever being there.
If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be? There are too many things to mention, I wish I wasn't so insecure.
What gives your life meaning? Music, family, friends
Can you tell me a joke? What's big, red and will kill you it it falls out of a tree? A firetruck. It's not a very good joke, sorry about that.
Can you recommend an interesting website? Www.huffingtonpost.com, for all your non-real word news. When everything else gets a little bit too heavy, I'd recommend a look at that.
What's the best advice you've ever been given? Listen to and take in advice but follow your own instincts.
When did you last cry? I got a bit emotional at a gig a few weeks ago. I was singing one of our songs and it just hit me hard, really didn't see it coming.
What do you see when you look in the mirror? A shy, blonde haired boy in desperate need of a haircut.
What is your favourite film and why? It's a wonderful life. It really is the simple things in life that matter the most. It's very easy to get caught up in things that don't matter. Just watch it.
What is your passion? Music
What do you have hanging on your walls at home that you like looking at most? A few landscape paintings and a big photograph of New York City skyline in the nighttime. There are also a few famous quotes of general encouragement stuck in random places.
What was your most formative experience? Probably being heartbroken or dropping out of college. Until then I really hated what I was doing but I was too scared to drop out, it was soul destroying.
What do you believe in? Ghosts, God and aliens, anything that can't be proved or disproved. I'm a true believer in following your own instincts.
What trait do others criticise you about? I can obsess over things if they're not right. Sometimes it's frustrating for others.
What is the funniest thing you've even seen or heard? It changes from time to time. Youtube is a gold mine for random videos.
What is your favourite word one-liner of retort? 'Yeah, that' cool man' or 'nah man'.
What would your motto be? Positive thinking is the most powerful think in the world.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? I think a fireman or a lawyer but I think those choices where put into my head by other people. Music was and is what I love
What are the best and the worst things about where you live? We live in Moselei in Bermingham at the moment. Although we haven't got to see the place properly as we've never there, but it's a very cool vibe about it.
Which Irish work of art would you recommend most highly? Astral weeks by Van Morrison
The best thing about the past 12 months was? Meeting new people, travelling to new places, playing sold out shows and writing music.
My biggest goal over the next 12 months is?7 That we play to as many people as possible or that music reached the ears of many people as possible.
Kodaline, good to see you. I was privileged some of the soundcheck there. Pretty amazing stuff going on at the moment. Mark: Yeah, it's a good sounding venue. The rescue rooms. We've played here before, supporting 'We are augustines' and the sound was good then and it's good now. Now we're back to do our own show.
We've been playing you since, I guess, Last autumn. And at the time I started playing you, it seemed like only a few people have heard of you but now everybody seems to know your name. How does that feel for you? Steve: We're just really excited about releasing our album whish is out on june but eum.. It's great that.. Thanks a million for playing us.
I wasn't saying it to get you to thank me! Steve: No, I know, that's really, really cool. People seem to be slowly discover us, getting behind us. So it's really great.
High hopes is the current single. Tell us a little bit about the history about High hopes. Mark: It's a pretty old song. Steve: Yeah, it's.. High hopes is our oldest song on the album. It's about two and a half, almost three years old, yeah. It's just a song about when times are tough and nothing seems to be going right, the best thing that you can do - in our opinion - is think positive so, I mean, or try the best to think positive. So High hopes, that's why it's called High hopes. It's a very personal song for us but the reaction for us so far has been great so it's really cool.
Now I'm aware of the massive succes that you had in Ireland. And it does feel like things are building really quickly for you at the moment as well. Cause you have a slice of succes there and now the same things are happening over her. So does that feel any different here? Mark: I think we kind of started with both theratories but it's just that we're Irish. And when an Irish band does well or put some music out, Irish people just really, really get behind it, so that could be the reason for that.
What is life like on the road? Because I just glimpsed into your little window in your dressing room for a few minutes and when I walked and it was like one big mess. Is it ike that the whole time? Mark: It's like: look at that big mess. We've been here for about an hour and the place is fithy. My suitcase's just open and my clothes are everywhere. because you live out of your suitcase. There's no point in outpacking if you stay for a night. I don't really know who that person is who just walked in.. Steve: For the most part, it's just travelling, so I mean it's not as exciting as you think it would be but you walked in at a busy time with the soundcheck and everybody's running around but for the most part it's just pretty chilled.
The album is 'In a perfect world' and to my mind it must be complete now, it must be finished and yet you where in the studio yesterday, so what's that all about? Mark: We just write a ridiculous amount of songs whenever we have time off. We just write and instead of sitting in our hotel we just, we were near the studio where we started the album in, Veil studios, it's in Worcester. So we just thought we just roll out there for a day and put down some stuff.
Which part do you enjoy the most? Is it writing songs? Is it recording them? Is it standing in front of a crowd and being adored? Which part of it really does it for you? Steve: Being adored as.. I don't know.. I mean.. I don't know that. That's not my answer. But I'd say the best thing is writing songs cause expecially because we travel a lot now and like with all the new experiences and new people we meet and new places we see. There's so much to write about. It's all cool, music is great, really. Isn't it?
No it's great, it is great. I mean, it's great when it's working for you. It definitely is at the moment. We thank you very much indeed, have a really great gig tonight. The release date for the album it's somewhere in june, I think? Mark: It's out on the 10th of June, yeah. It could be the sound of our summer because we're playing the album every single day.
Notitie 1: We houden van de schattigheid van Steve Notitie 2: We houden van de bromance tussen Steve en Mark op 1:35 Notitie 3: We houden van deze prachtige cover die Kodaline gemaakt heeft!

Congrats on making the BBC's sound of 2013 shortlist. Did the Sound of 2013 nomination come as a suprise? Cheers, yeah we didn't expect it. It means a lot. Hopefully it gets our music out and into the ears of more people. It's pretty cool.
The song and video for your track 'All I want' has been quite a success. How bad should I feel if I exactly looked like the guy in the video? Well, the old age saying answers that question: 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. As cliché as that quote is, I hope it cheers you up.
How did the Grey's Anatomy song feature come about? And - not to be sexist - but as a guy, do you even like Grey's anatomy? We went over to L.A a few months back and we played for a few people, they liked us and decided to put 'All I want' on the show. Funnily enough, we ran into Billy Joel in a bar over there too.. But I suppose that's another story. We've never watched Grey's Anatomy but we do like the music they have on the show, so it's a cool feeling that they chose a song of ours for it
As the music industry changes, bands are now licensing their music to television and commercials? This used to be considered sell outr territory. Having done this yourself with Greys Anatomy, do you think fans' views are changing and more understanding? I've been introduced to alot of great music through films and television programmes, it's a great way to discover new music, for instance I discovered a guy caled Warren Zevon and his song 'keep my in your heart' from the film funny people. In short, it's a way to discover music.
Complete this sentence: All I want.. Are gloves and scarves, before the cold tears me apart. The heavy snow in Birmingham, was not a part of my weekend plan. I'm cold and I have to walk to rehearsals.
Becoming succesful with only 1 EP must make the set lists for live shows a little repetitive. How excited are you to have new songs that the crowds will know? Playing gigs is fun in general. Although I can't wait to release the album. It's out on the 25th of March, it will be interesting to see how people will react to it. Hopefully they like it.
Why is your next EP being released a week before your debut album? You're not afraid of Kodaline Overload? We write a lot of songs so we decided to put a few on another EP before the album.
2013 promises to be another busy year for the band. What do you hope to get out of 2013? To play to as many people as possible, that's pretty much it. Well, also to write more and buy a decent pair of gloves.
The question every band loves - What does the name 'Kodaline' mean? It's very personal, we'd like to keep it a secret if that's ok.
WHat's the biggest misconception about Irish music or Ierland's music scene? That every one knows each other. It's not that small of a place
Besides Kodaline, what bands should people rushing to check out? Tame Impala are great, Lianne La Havas, Little green cars, Hudson Tayor and Gabrielle Aplin to name a few.

So you're standing in the parkinglot of life And you're trying to figure out your face tonight And you hear a sound coming out of the car radio Saying 'Son, if you don't learn, you never know' So you try to drag your feet down to the bar When you starting to forget just who you are And they told you it was written in the stars But you never had a chance to look that far
Yeah that's just the way it goes Maybe you die young before your old Yeah, that's just the way it is Nobody's gonna tell you how to live
In a world that changes everyday It's easy to get lost along the way In a world that's never as it seems Where people try to buy and sell their dreams Where people try to buy and sell their dreams
Yeah, it just the way it goes Maybe you die young before you're old Yeah, that's just the way it is Nobody's gonna tell you how to live Nobody's gonna tell you how to live
Nobody's gonna tell you how to live Nobody's gonna tell you how to live Cause nobody understands just what it is

We never had that much to do so we just lay around in some one's house Someday I'll have it all again, just like way back when Back then we sleep until the afternoon, then we just get up and get outside Open up a window, let the summer blow in, forget everything
Those will be the days that I'll be missing When I'm old, when I'm grey and when I stop working I hope that I can say when all my days are done We were just having fun
Well, we go drinking in the afternoon, lie into the grass and fall asleep Will I ever see that girl again, the girl from way back when We used to share a cigarette, throw together everything we had And then go driving in my parents car, we never strayed too far
Those will be the days that I'll be missing When I'm old, when I'm grey and when I stop working I hope that I can say when all my days are done That I had my fun
Yeah Time can move so fast, Some things aren't made to last So here's to you, my dear old friend from way back when
Those will be the days that I'll be missing When I'm old, when I'm grey and when I stop working I hope that I can say when all my days are done That I had my fun

Watch your step or you might fall You act like you're a know it all Yeah I used to do that I used to be like that I'm still a bit like that
You might think you found the one untill your heart gets ripped and torned Yeah I used to feel bad I used to feel like that Still feel a bit like that
But I'm not searching for the answer I'm not looking for the truth I'm just talking through a speaker Because that's all that I have ever learned to do
Use your mind and make it talk Cause in this world it's all you've got And we all fall down from the highest cloud to the lowest ground
Loneliness is worst of all When you got no one else to call Feeling kind of sad when the times are bad, times are getting bad
But I'm not searching for the answer I'm not looking for the truth I'm just talking through a speaker Because that's all that I have ever learned to do
What about you What about you What about you What about you What about you What about you What about you What about you
So watch your step or you might fall You act like you're a know it all Yeah I used to do that I used the be like that I'm still a bit like that

I can remember the good old days When you and me we used to hide away Where the stars were shining and the sun was burning our eyes You filled up my glass With promises that would never last And I still find pieces of me in the back of my mind
And all of the things that we ones said Are not in my heart, there in my head That was the time to say goodbye Let's put it to rest, yeah let it die
Cause we don't, we don't need to talk about this now We've been down that road before But that was then and this is now The crowds in my heart they've been calling out your name But it just don't feel the same I guess it's over, yeah we're done
I heard you made your way downtown To the place I've been hanging around I was searching for your face in the crowd But trying to keep my head down Over time our wires crossed But you changed and the truth got lost All the things I could change if we could only rewind
You were a moment in life that comes and goes A riddle, a rhyme and no one knows A change in the heart, A twist of fate Couldn't fix it, it's too late
Cause we don't, we don't need to talk about this now We've been down that road before But that was then and this is now The crowds in my heart they've been calling out your name But it just don't feel the same I guess it's over, yeah we're done

How many nights do you lie dreaming I'm counting the days since you went away When I lost my heart, life lost all meaning What I would give to see you again
I'll pray for you Will you pray for me I'll pray for you
And you slipped away from me without talking The look in your eyes was stronger than this I drink alone to stop me from weeping What's left of my heart is forever yours Forever yours
I'll pray for you Do you pray for me I'll pray for you

One day it's there and then it's gone How are you still holding on How are you still holding on You've felt this way for way to long Waiting for a change to come You know you're not the only one
Yeah Life passes you by So don't waste your time on your own
You Always try to see yourself Through the eyes of some one else Through the eyes of some one else To shy to say that you need help You and everybody else You and everybody else
Yeah Life passes you by So don't waste your time on your own
Yeah Life passes you by So don't be waisting your time all alone
As your heart gets bigger As you try to figure out Whats it all about And your skin gets thicker As you try to figure out What's it all about
Yeah Life passes you by So don't waste your time on your own How are you still holding on Why are you still holding on

Running through the heat heart beat You shine like silver in the sunlight You light up my cold heart It feels right, in the sun, the sun We're running round and round Like nothing else could matter in our lives But wait, but wait, but wait The sun will stop shining soon And you'll be gone out of my life Yeah you'll be gone It's as simple as a change of heart But I'm not gonna think about the future
A love like this won't last forever I know that a love like this won't last forever But I, I don't really mind, I don't really mind at all
Step into the night life It goes dark but you don't mind Hiding in the back streets Yeah, you'll never notice me All that I was thinking about Was cleaning up my conscience Lost in the memories As is shakes up the corners of my heart Was it my mistake Or maybe it was just as simple as a change in your heart Yeah, just as simple as a change in your heart
A love like this won't last forever I know that a love like this won't last forever But I, I don't really mind, I don't really mind at all

Loosen up and lose you mind You never know what you could find on the other side A houndred Thousand butterflies Foating in the orange skies above my head I wander lonely as a cloud Floating high above the ground like aeroplanes I hear the sound of humming birds The sweetest sound I've ever heard, I can't describe
Oh, Oh, Oh I'm dreaming of a world with you Oh, Oh, Oh And all the things that we can do
Feeling like a plastic bag Spinning round but slowly going nowhere fast Waterfalls inside my eyes Am I on the other side, am I dreaming Holding on to a dolphin's fin He helps me swim where I can't swim, he's friendly Loosen up and lose your mind you never know what you could find on the other side
Oh, Oh, Oh I'm dreaming of a world with you Oh, Oh, Oh And all the things that we can do
Waking on a tightrope wire Dropping poison pills of fire Hypnotised Euphornia will be here soon Turn the lights down, Let the answers fill the room
Oh, Oh, Oh I'm dreaming of a world with you Oh, Oh, Oh And all the things that we can do
A hundred Thousand butterflies floating in the orange skies above my head Loosen up and lose your mind you never know what you could find on the other side
All the things that make you feel better you should write it all down and put it in a letter
All of the things that make you feel better you should write it all down and put it in a letter

Broken bottles in the hotel lobby Seems to me like I'm just scared of never feeling it again I know it's crazy to believe in silly things But it's not that easy I remember it now it takes me back to when it all first started And I only got myself to blame for it and I accept it now It's time to let it go, go out and start again But it's not that easy
But I've got high hopes It takes me back to where we started High hopes when you Let it go, go out and start again That the world keep spinning around
And in my dreams I meet the ghosts of all the people who've come and gone Memories they seem to show up so quick but they leave you far to soon Naïve, I was just staring at the barrel of a gun and I do believe that
But I've got high hopes It takes me back to where we started High hopes when you Let it go, go out and start again That the world keep spinning around
High hopes It takes me back to where we started High hopes when you Let it go, go out and start again That the world keep spinning around
That the world keeps spinning Oh that the world keeps spinning Around

This here hometown, I've think I've outgrown I want to travel the world but I, I just can't do it alone So I'm just waiting on faith to come and wrap around me think about all the foreign places we could be
I'll be flicking stones at your window I'll be waiting outside 'till you're ready to go Won't you come down, come away with me Just think of all the places we could be I'll be waiting, waiting on a brand new day
Riding on waves, walking on sand Digging in caves to find the treasures of the land And if we'll find gold, we'll just trow it away We can write stories 'bout the journeys that we made (We could be big in Japan)
I'll be flicking stones at your window I'll be waiting outside 'till you're ready to go Won't you come down, come away with me Just think of all the places we could be I'll be waiting, waiting on a brand new day
They said they'd keep me here But I couldn't do another year I said I see you soon Because I whistle to a different tune
Think of all the places we could be Think of all the people we could meet
I'll be flicking stones at your window I'll be waiting outside 'till your ready to go Won't you come down, come away with me just think of all the places we could be I'll be waiting, waiting on a brand new day

Maybe I'm wrong or maybe I'm right Maybe it's just to late but this is keeping me awake all night Maybe say yes or maybe say no Maybe I'm just to shy to admit that it's time to go
We go out on our own it's a big bad world outside carrying our dreams and all that they mean trying to make it all worthwhile
Maybe believe or maybe don't care Sure maybe there is no God up in the big white clouds up there Maybe live long or maybe die young Maybe live everyday like it's your last day under the sun
We go out on our own it's a big bad world outside carrying our dreams and all that they mean trying to make it all worthwhile

All I want is nothing more Then to hear you knocking at my door Cause if I could see your face once more I could die a happy man I'm sure When you said your last goodbye I died a little bit inside I lay in tears in bad all night Alone without you by my side
But if you loved me, why'd you leave me Take my body, take my body All I want is, and all I need it To find somebody, I'll find somebody like you!
See you brought out the best of me A part of me I've never seen You took my soul and wiped it clean Our love was made for movie screens
But if you loved me, why'd you leave me Take my body, take my body All I want is, and all I need it To find somebody, I'll find somebody like you!

I still hear the sound of that runaway train Roll through my heart as that lovers refrain But I know in my heart we can never go back To the way that we were on that runaway track I see in your soul and I know you were lying to me I loose control, oh, why didn't I know Was I just to you? But why do I feel so old? Cause I'm still so yound!
Yeah but it all comes down to What it all comes down to It all comes down to Yeah it all comes down to It all comes down to it all comes down to you
If you see it, why couldn't you do it And you're so alone tonight And it's heartbreaking the road you choosing God wouldn't save you Love is a battle, and everybody cries
Yeah but it all comes down to What it all comes down to It all comes down to Yeah it all comes down to It all comes down to it all comes down to you
Of all the people in my heart You where the vision in my soul And I feel so alone Like I'm loosing control Am I just too young? Cause why do I feel so old? Cause I'm still so young!
But it all comes down to, what if all comes down to It all comes down to, yeah it all comes down to It all comes down to, it all comes down to you All comes down to you
But I all comes down to, what it all comes down to It all comes down to, yeah it all comes down to you
It all comes down to you

People keep talking, but I can't hear a word they say Life just keeps moving, the world gets stranger everyday Yeah, time is on your side, that's what people tell you But I got to let you go
My head is saying that this is for the better I just want you to know I can't hold on forever when all I wanna do is let go All I wanna do is let go
Sirens are screaming, but I can't hear a single sound And I'm feeling uneasy So I wait and I wait for the change to come around
I get the feeling that this is for the better I just want you to know I can't hold on forever When all I wanna do is let go All I wanna do is let go
Are you searching for an answer Or just peace of mind When your life has lost it's meaning Maybe you need a little time Are you searching for an answer Or just peace of mind When your life has lost it's meaning Maybe you need a little time
