Not long ago, I was talking to a Christian fellow at the local Starbucks. As we got to talking, he realized that I was one without religion, and he immediately questioned my ethics. In fact many groups have been slaughtered over religious ideals, and they have killed their fellow man merely over a difference in belief. I would submit to you that that is an unethical action, and yet it was their religion which allowed them to do it in good faith. Human beings have a mind, they can figure out what's right and wrong, it should be obvious. Anyone with a relatively average level of intelligence knows the difference. No one had to tell them that it was the right thing to do, they inherently knew the difference between right and wrong, and knowingly engaged in an empathetic, and righteous action. We must all withhold wrongdoing, and when we see wrongdoing happening, we should stand up and say something. We should also be able to look in our own mirrors, know when we've made a mistake, and correct the problem. Most if not all "strangers" are like you and me I know that my "hater" attitude sometimes tells me that everybody else is bad and I should watch out for danger. The reality is though that most of the people I meet everyday, in the bus or at the coffee shop, are just like you BEA 0B0-103and me. They have their friends and job and regular life. Some of them might even be better than me in a lot of ways. So why pretend I am afraid and not approach them? I might have something to gain from them. At least their friendship. Closets, and what you keep in them, are close to the hearts of psychotherapists, human resources professionals, university and school teachers, the Criminal Records Bureau, anti-terrorist agencies, the police, the Secret Service, religious professionals, and novelists everywhere - or they should be. It keeps you locked prisoner in a self-inflicted torture chamber by holding onto animosity, anger and hatred. Interestingly, I also ran into a women this week who I hadn't seen in at least 10 years who was so rude to me one night and classless about the way she went about attacking me in front of a small group of friends, that I justifiably could have snubbed her and made her feel bad. Particularly, since she walked into a venue that was on my turf so to speak. I instantly thought about how unfair she had been and in a split second I had to decide how I was going to react to her. I was nice. I thought, she is the one who has to live with what she did, people make mistakes and what good would it do for me to embarrass her or try and make her feel bad? Plus, I thought why would I put myself on her level, just let bygones be bygones. Holding onto negative feelings toward someone for something they did to you is not worth your precious time. It's you that suffers. It's you that carries the past hurts around like rotten garbage that you won't throw out. And, you are the only one who can choose whether to hold onto it longer or release yourself from the weight of the past. You can almost pick out the people who won't let go, they are typically miserable.
