De strijd om Midden-Wereld is begonnen! Gilead is gevallen. Voor de jonge scherpschutter Roland Deschain zit er niets anders op dan het laatste gevecht aan te gaan met de Goede Man, de krankzinnige John Farson, hoe hopeloos dat gevecht ook lijkt. Tegelijkertijd wordt Rolands aandacht naar de Donkere Toren getrokken, een van de zes stralen die de wereld bij elkaar houden heeft het begeven.
