De ThunderCats vluchtten door de ruimte om te ontsnappen aan hun stervende thuiswereld en werden onderweg aangevallen door hun sterfelijke vijanden, de Mutanten van Plun-Darr. Nadat ze hun beschadigde vlaggenschip hadden omgeleid naar een planeet genaamd Third Earth, proberen de overlevende ThunderCats nu hun samenleving te herbouwen in harmonie met de inboorlingen van de nieuwe wereld. Maar de Mutanten, vastbesloten om de mystieke edelsteen van de ThunderCats, het Oog van Thundera, te bezitten, hebben ze opgespoord â en ze hebben ook een alliantie gevormd met Mumm-Ra, de duivelspriester van Third Earth!
Nu moeten de ThunderCats, geleid door een onervaren Lion-O, zich als nooit tevoren verenigen om hun nalatenschap te beschermen tegen deze gecombineerde vijand. Maar zullen ze de aanval van Mumm-Ra de Eeuwiglevende kunnen weerstaan, zodra hij zijn ogen op hen richt?
