Last day of our two week visit to Belguim. This morning we where presented with our certificates by our tutor the fons thank you. After this we visited micheals timber frame production site. We where shown the details in to how the company works how they use the materials etc we was then taken on a tour of the factory this was fascinating to see how they can do the fabrication of a single house in just one day. After this we where shown around four different properties that had been constructed on site for show houses, the fourth one is the one i would like to bring back to the UK with me this over all was a good procedure to see. Over the last few weeks we have bee shown a wide variety of passive and low energy projects it has been good to see how it all works and just how far the UK is behind.

yesterday we was shown how to install and correctly insulate a roof, this included all the pipes leaving the roof and a new material used to replace lead which looked alot easier and less time consuming.

today we visitied a private firm called micheals, this firm specialised in pre-fabricating all the materials used for passive housing. this included pre made hinged roofs, walls with pre installed windows, electrics and insulation, it gave a good idea of how quick a renovation or passive house can be made and put up. We then looked at some model houses which were all funished and finshed, it gave us a chance to see all the ventilation and the overall finished product which was really good. overall this has been a great experience and has gave me a really good view point of passive housing.

Visit to Machiels Building Solutions; we were shown presentations which outlined the products the company produces and the reasoning/rationale behind why they produce prefabricated timber framed structures. A tour of the factory then followed with all the automation an manual assembly areas. We were also shown around some completed units.

Overall the training experience at CVO has been very beneficial and informative; I look forward to taking my new found knowlege back to the UK for use throughout my career.

Thank you Belgium.

We visited Machiels Building Solutions on Friday morning.  We were shown a presentation on the services the company offer and were then given a tour of the factory to see how the products are put together.  This was extremely useful as it gave a guide to the manufacturing process involved in the production of a timber framed building.

Overall, the training has been a massive success as we can take the information studied back to the UK and hopefully implement some of this moving forward in our company.  It has also been a wakeup call as the UK is so far behind in this area.

Lastly I would like to thank Fons for all the time and effort he put into the course, it would have not been possible without his efforts.

Today is our finall day in belgiem nand today we have been to vist michels building solutions which is an organisation in the construction industry which creates solutions to correct old buildings and bring them up to passive house standards and also create new buildings created entialy out of wooden frames with the smallest amount of steel as possible. It was very intresting to see how the building industry has come on over the years and how far british construct is behind. Thank u very much for this experiance it has been very benifical and would recomend it to anyone else who has this opertunity. And a massive thanks to our teachers Fons and all hiis work colleges at cvo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This morning we had a seminar from Francis from a company dealing in airtightness products such as breathable membranes.  This was beneficial as it gave us a better understanding of the products available and how these should be installed correctly.  There were a few products whiuch had been specially designed so not to damage the vapour barrier such as pipe fixings.

In the afternoon we had our examination reviewing the things we had learnt over the last 2 weeks.  This was useful as we got to go over things previously learnt and ask any questions if we were unsure of the answers.  Thankfully we passed the test.

Today we where explained about the importance of using the correct vapour barriers and that if incorrectly fitted it causes condensation which will cause problems in later life of the building. It was also interesting to here our tutor Francis today talk about his own build and that he has built a low energy house rather than a passive house due to the extra cost on the grounds that he would see a return on his money but after 10 years his low energy will be earning him money thank you a very good insight in to this process.

This afternoons lesson was all about solar panals. First of all we was shown how the are made up how they work then how to install. We then had a practical; we set up 8 solar panals and built up the system to collect the DC (direct current) power and turn it into AC (alternating current) this was realy good as we then saw the hole system working with little sunlight and how electric meter box sarted to turn backwards putting power back to the net. This project was very sucessfull and was good to see the rest of the boys working together and enjoying the task WELL DONE

Today our teacher Fons showed us how to use a thermal imiging camera to detect thermal heat losses to a property and also how it can detect air gaps. The thermal imaging camera could also store prevouise photos to use when the building has to be showen to be signed off.
In the afternoon we had to erect a solor pannel systems this was my favouirate bit off the course so far. We worked in two groups Ezel, Alastair, Justin constructed all the solor pannels together while Myself and Marcus instailled the meter, the converter and the breaker. We also did all the wiring between the breakers meter and coveter. The conveter conveted current from direct current to alternating current. We then tested it and it worked slowley but surley.

We spent the morning looking at thermal imaging and it's uses within building surveys.
We watched a video detailing how to use a thermal imaging camera and when the limitations and benefits of this system.  Although the video was of use, it focussed more towards electrical testing and as such I found myself slightly lost at points. I did gain a better understanding of the equipment.
Fons then showed us the thermal imaging camera and we got to look at some construction details within the classroom to see any cold spots in the room.  This again was beneficial, but I would have found it more useful if we could have carried out a survey to a property to put practical learning to the theory we have studied.

In the afternoon we went to the training centre to look into solar panels in more detail.
We were given a presentation by Patrick regarding the system to give us an understanding of how it worked.

After the presentation we then got the opportunity to erect a solar panel system consisting of 9 panels and connecting this to a converter and meter.  This was extremely beneficial as this enhanced the information we had studied previously.
All in all a very good afternoon.

Today fons showed us how to use the thermal imager to check for cold spots and all the other possible uses of the thermal imager, which could be used for a wide range of things. We got to use the thermal imager around the classroom, this gave me a better view on how the imager worked. after this we went to the training center to be showed how to install solar panels, we was talked through a slideshow which explained the angles, outputs etc. we then had to erect the panels and wire up the converter, meter and the breakers, after this we tested the panels to see how much power was being generated. this was not a large amount as it was a very cloudy day with very little sunlight.

Today we spent the morning watching instructional videos regarding the operation of thermal imaging cameras, with a breif opportunity to operate the camera before we broke for lunch. Personally  would have preffered the opportunity to carry out a minor survey on a property using the camera to  establish the extent of cold bridges etc, as the videos we saw were more focussed on electrics, rather than building fabric/envelopes.

In the afternoon we had the opportunity to build a solar PV array co^mplete with ancillaries and observe the effectiveness of the system first had. I found this session useful and informative.

We where shown a video to show how a Fluke Thermal Imager works this was interesting to see how it works and how it picks up heat loss or where it conducts. It was also good to see how the software works so you can see the information in detail. Unfortunatly some of the information on the video was not needed as it went further in to the system than we needed.

These two days we revisited the passivehouse construction where we were given the tools to insulate the outside walls to help repair the thermal barrier that we where shown last week. This process was done by using different thicknesses of insulation board; the main thickness had to be 8cm but we had to build up extra layers up depending on what the outer wall finnish was to be. Through this process it was good to be on site using tools the only problem was a confusion in the language barrier even the the english was good it was still hard for us to explain our concerns and the way our apprentice's had to work.  Having completed the work we was told that the owner was happy with the work we had done and hopefully it will do the job it is being tried out to do.

Days six and seven saw us on site for a two day practical stretch; where we fitted insulation to the bases of the external walls to negate the possibility of thermal bridges occuring.
Although I didnt learn a great deal theory wise from this pareticular exercise; it did offer a new a different perspective to the one from which I usually see construction projects.

On  the Monday of week 2 we went to the training centre to collect materials and tools as we were going to be carrying out practical work for the next 2 days.
We then drove to site which was the passivehouse office building we visited the Monday before.  We were told that there had been an incorrect detail specified for the building which meant that a thermal bridge still existed at low level between the wall and internal floor construction.

As a result we would be reducing the ground level to the top of the footing and then installing insulation to this area to eliminate the thermal bridge.

We spent the next 2 days installing the insulation around the building under the supervision of the client.

Although I didn't learn any new theory, it was good to get a bit of practical experience on site, especially for an office boy.

On monday of the secound week we started the practical work to the house were we visited in the first week. We started work to the property because there was a thermal bridge which needed insulating. We insulated the intiour perimiter of the property to created a good and adiquate thermal bridge. We then were asked to insulate the floor inside the property aswell. It was all in all a good experence.

we started with the practical work at the beginning of week 2, there was a thernal brigde at the property that we visited last tuesday. We had to rectify this problem with the help of fons and the architect that owned the property, to do this we had several different thicknesses of insulation that we had to layer up around the bottom of the property to give us a thickness of 80cm. we cut the peices at the required height and stuck them to the building using a foam glue, we piled sand up against the foam to keep it in place. This will then be checked to see if all thermal leaks have been eliminated from the property to give it thermal tightness.
