Today we where shown thermal images that showed us where in the property we lose heat this is done by using a thermal imaging camera. We then moved on to the airtightness and trough different size gaps what is lossed and how it affects the moisture content so it showed how important it is to have full seal. we where also shown how a blow door test works. Moving on we looked at solar panals and how they work. It was good to see how much there fucntioning loses power when not set at the correct angle of around 35 degrees south facing. We here then shown other sustainable energy systems   The video produced by copenhagen denmark just showed how far a city is prepared to go to achive its goal by 2015

Day 4
Today consisted mostly all theory but we looked at the first stages to a ground floor, first floor and roof  pitch and flat. We were shown videos of how different flat roof systems where used.  This afternoon we have been looking at the different kinds of insulation techniques and the different heat loss ratios are for each different type of insulation.  By doing this today it gave us a good understanding of how the previouse buildings we visited were constructed and worked.

On the morning of day three we were taken to a passivehouse still under construction, which used straw bales as its insulated material. The building was in various stages of completion and as such many of the construction details were still visable. The visit was useful as I had never seen straw used for insulation, and once again the importance of air tightness was enmphasised. In the afternoon we witnessed an exisiting domestic builidng having PU foam injected into the cavitiy to improve its energy efficiency. Day four was spent reviezing Passivehouse construction details and lectures on air tightness.

today we looked more at the materials used to create the passive house and how these materials are put together to create a envelope of no heat losses. we then visited the training centre where the the trades practice bricklaying, gardening etc. after this we looked at a renovation protect where they was pumping PU foam into the walls to create a low energy property, the tradesmen on the job showed us how it worked by pumping a small amount into a bucket so we could see the reaction, this was very interesting.

Day 3
Wensday today we where shown how the construction details of one of the first passive buildings was built . It showed us in detail how the building was constructed around 4 concrete pillars. Todays vist was to a passive house built using strawbales this was very intresting as it showed us how thick the walls had to create a good solid insulation.  We then visited a property having a cavity wall system filled with poly foam this was good to see as it showed us how to set up, drill, inject, seal and finnish off to complete the job in one day. The system also showed us the problems if there are any faults in either wall (gaps and cracks etc). We also visted a site that had been built by britsh students unfortunatly we couldnt get acess to the building.

On the morning of day 3 we went to visit a house under construction using straw bales for the external walls.
Although not the most efficient method of insulating a property, it showed that a passivehouse can be constructed using various types of insulation material, all by changing the profile of the walls.
In the afternoon we visited a property which was having PU installed retospectively to the cavity walls.  We were given a demonstration of how the foam changes from a liquid state to a solid and showed how this was installed.

Thursday consisted mostly of theory relating to insulation types, construction details, and touched a little on airtightness.
Again we were shown examples of good methods of practice and were able to relate this to the buildings we had previously visited.

All in all very informative

Today we where shown the construction details of one of the first passive buildings built that we visted yesterday.  It showed us in detail how the building was constructed around 4 concrete pillars, how it needed extra beams added to it etc. Todays vist was to a passive house built using strawbales this was very intresting as it showed us how thick the walls had to be it was also good to be able to ask questions to the owner( he was also the builder) about the benifits of using straw and how he overcame problems and the reasons why he would not use straw again (this is only because of the time scale not price or poor u-value). We then visited a property having a cavity wall system filled with poly foam this was good to see as it showed us how to set up, drill, inject, seal and finnish off to complete the job in one day. The system also showed us the problems if there are any faults in either wall (gaps and cracks etc) what happens.  We also visted a site that had been built by britsh students unfortunatly we could not gain access to see the internal finnishing.

Change of plan to this afternoons plans we took a tour of the local area where the old mine was this was intresting to find out how the local community worked much the same as our town and area back in the uk. We where then shown a 10000 sq meter solar panal site and shown one of the first passive houses which on day3 we will be shown how it was built.  We then visited the the expo of energy saving the tour took us through all the stages of a passive house all the different materials, solar panals and wind this all was translated to us expertly by our teacher the fonz,  All this helped me understand the principles of passive house building it also showed just how far the uk is behind in the construction area.

yesterday fons covered the basics of passive housing this gave a good idea of all the materials used to create less heat losses, stop condensation etc. we visited a passive office block that was under construction, this gave a good insight into the way materials were put together, the construction techniques used and how important the insulation around the property is etc.

Today we have covered all of the materials u-values and lenghts, we used this information to work out the calculation to give you the overall u value of the property. we put these calculations against the required targets, they exceeded the requirement so we tried differrent materials untill we got the correct u-value. fons explained this very well and made it easy to understand. we then looked at a software programe that worked out all materials, heat losses etc. this was very interesting and usefull.

Todays lesson was to show us how to calculate the u-values of materials used in the constrution of walls for this to pass it needs to be at a value of 0.15.  We was given a chance to select our own materials to calculate to get the required value this was then demonstrated expertly i must say bt Ezel and Alister. this afternoon we will be visting a strawbale construction.

Yesterday afternoon we were taken to a Passivehouse still under construction in the village of Genk. The building is intended to be an office block once completed.

The exterior of the builing was impressive, with a large sloping south facing roof covered with PV panels, and cladded with various types of materials. The opportunity to examine various construction details and cross sections was very interesting, allowing us to see a practical real life application of the theory demonstrated in class. A very useful field trip.

This moring consisted of futher theory and practicals surrounding the calculation of U values for walls, with the opportunity to specify ouru own construction. Insulation was shown to be the most influential element of the wall contruction in achieving a favourable U value. Lectures on various insulation types and a software demonstration followed.

Very useful and informative....

On the afternoon of day 1 Fons took us to see a passivehouse under construction.  This was extremely useful as we were able to see the information we were told about in the mroning.  The first thing that struck me was the scale of the building and services etc. within and the extent of renewable energy solutions such as PV panels and the mechanical ventilation system.  I counted over 300 panels on the south elevation of the roof which is like nothing we are used to seeing in the UK.
This trip helped me to realise the extent of planning which goes into a building like this.

On the morning of day 2, we carried on with the principles of U-values and carried out a number of calcs to determine improvements required to meet the passivehouse standard.
This was interesting as it made me realise the thought required to consruct each element of the building and meet the required U-values.

We were also shown a software package relating to condensation which looked extrememy useful and would assist in our day to day job role.  We will look into purchasing this.

DAY 1
In the afternoon of day 1 we visited a passive house still under construction. The first thing we noticied, was the roof which was covered from bottom to top with solar pannels which were south facing. Fons explained why this was
Then we notice the amount of different materials which were used during this build to componsate for the insulation of the building. These certain materials were selected to allow very little or nill heat loss to the building fabric. They were selected by using a certian formula to calculate your resistance and u valves.
To see this stage of the building under construction was very benificall thanks Fons!!!!!!
DAY 2
Today so far we have learnt how to calculate the resistance and u valve to see
what your potentail heat loss to a propertie/ passive house would be. We have also seen a software which is used to tell u after youve done your calculations what your condencation levels would be and wheather your propertie/ passive house would be up to standards and regulations.

This afternoon we visited a passivehouse construction of an office complex first thing we noticed was a gound to apex roof coverd completely in solar panals facing towards the south.  Our teacher the fonz then explained how the construction process starts showing us the materials used and thicknesses which helped us to understand the different u values etc of the materials.  Once inside we could see how all the systems put together showed the complete thickness of the walls.  The technolgy used for the wireing, heat and air source and the water systems where very impresive.

The day started with an introduction to the "Fons" who showed us the location of all the essentials; and our classroom. Depite not being able to speak any Dutch, French or German everyone was friendly and eager to help.

The main topic was an introduction to the principles and concepts of Passivehouse, with an enphasis on an orientation and envelope first approach.... after half a day the rest looks promising....I love your chocolate covered waffles....

Peace out....
