An alternative chess engine tournament Welcome to CountryChess!
In the first stage, chess engines of the same country will play a double round-robin tournament. The winner of each country competition meets other country winners in qualifying matches or in the Champions League, according to its place on the country ranking list. Top ranked countries will be represented by 2, 3 or even 4 engines in the Champions League.
About me:
My name is Geert. I live in Belgium and I am visually impaired. My chess elorating is about 1850 elo.
I prefer to update an easy blog, friendly for a blind user. The purpose is to organize tournaments and to share the games and results. I don't like wasting time on unaccessible webdesign programs. So don't expect a perfect lay-out, but let's hope it is good enough though!
2 participants: Dirty 11AUG2011 and Natwarlal 0.14.
Dirty seems to work fine under fritz, but it crashes when I try to configure the WB2uci. Now Dirty plays without endgame bitbases.
It was hard to find a not-broken link for Natwarlal. Finally, I found one, see below (only exe file). Games and result of this engine match is coming very soon.
It was not easy to select the 12 strongest German freeware engines. Toga or no Toga, and why is Loop MP excluded from almost every engine tournament? As always, I keep an eye on other tournament results and ranking lists, so I think that my selection is defendable. Anaconda, Gromit, Jonny, Protector and Sos are playing with the perfect2010.ctg book. For Sos, I tried to use "Sos traps", a special book created by salvo Spitaleri and converted with the abk to pgn file, made by Lance Perkins. It doesn't work fine though.
Sometimes, chess engines just act like real people. After the first leg of the tournament, BugChess had 10 out of 11, 2 points more than Fruit. In the second leg, BugChess couldn't hold its leading position. Was he nervous, unexperienced in winning a tournament? Fruit won with 1.5 points in front of BugChess. Fruit 2.3.1 will play a play-off match (12 games) against Fruit 2.3.3f later. The winning version will be used. Dragon and the disappointing Crazy Bishop are relegated to play in the second French division.
Finally, the first tournament with a reasonable number of participants: 11. 7 games of Rodin 4.0 were replayed afterward. The friendly author Fermin Serrano helped me to find a solution for the timetroubles of his engine. And Rodin did a very good job with a second place, far behind Alfil but it seems that this engine has made much progress.
Caligula refused to use its own book under Fritzgui. Alfil will participate in the cL test tournament.
Maybe I was the only one who didn't know that a newer version of Fruit is available on the web. Newer, what's in a name; this version is from 2007. Don't know if this beta is free of bugs and stronger than the official version 2.3.1. If Fruit wins the French countrycompetition, maybe I'll use F2.3.3f. Download link: see below.
Again a little tournament with only 3 players. I probably underestimated the strenght of some other engines with an elo >2000; I will add them to the next Canadian tournament. However, the winner is not a big surprise, even if Thinker didn't play at its full strength: only 1cpu. I don't know how many cores Thinker supports; at least 2, hopefully 4 or even 6.
Glass 1.6 was clearly too strong for its opponent InmiChess 3.06. Probably after a few matches, InmiChess will have an elorating <2000 and will be excluded. Glass is qualified for the CL.
This evening, the French country competition will start with the 12 strongest available freeware engines, based on standings and elolists of WBEC Ridderkerk and ChessWar. In next French competitions, more engines will be added.
Conditions:
Double round robin; time control =30'+5"; hashtables =128; ponder =off; 3 and 4-men tablebases; startelo =2300.

Test tournament Australia finished
At the beginning, Little Thought was crashing in almost every game. But the author Nathan Thom helped me to adjust some parameters: Multiple threads =1, TraceLevel =2. With these settings, Little Thought played just great and obtained a 4-2 win against Trace. Little Thought will participate in the Champions League test tournament. 3 weeks ago, I started with the first test tournaments. The winner of each test tournament will play a round-robin Champions League afterward. This CL tournament is only meant to create a country ranking start list. All engines start with an elorating of 2400. Conditions for the test tournament: Computer stuff: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 870 @ 2.93GHz; Os: Win7 64-bit Home edition. Interface: Fritzgui Hashtable size: 128 Tablebases: 3 and 4-men. Opening books: the book of the engine; if there's no book available, then perfect2010.ctg is used. Multi threads: max =6cpu (if supported by the engine).
Time control: 30'+5"
More information in the very near future.
