Can anyone draw me a picture of
My Familiar? Please?
When I read the book about "Witches' Familiars" by Raven Grimassi, I came across a meditation technique which guides you to a land beyond our world, where you can meet your "Familiar".
This is the first time I saw this technique explained with the possibility to let the Familiar come to you on his own terms and on his own land, and only when it reveals itself will you see what kind of creature it is.
Other books focus too much on meeting your Totem-animal with the stress on "Animal" whereas Raven explains the Familiar can be three things:
1- an animal,
2- a fantasy creature of your choice, or
3- a creature from the ethereal world.
This sounded much more acceptable to me, as the other rituals to find my totem animal left me more confused than ever as to which animal to choose.
I tried the ritual, not expecting too much, and as the visualisation had told me, I was sitting on a boulder rock near the little lake in the clearing waiting for the Familiar to appear. From the woods to the side of me, the Familiar came up to me almost immediately to greet me. I was enchanted!
Such a sweet little creature it was and the word Elfling popped up in my mind, so I suppose that was the "race" or "species" it belonged to.
His name came to me only much later.
The Elfling walked bended through his knees, much more like a tree dweller than like a human. He had green fur moss (or moss fur) growing on his legs, back and head (were it replaced the hair) and on the back of his arms. His face, chest, and inner part of his arms looked like the fair wood of the Elder tree. He had a rather wiry built.
His hands resembled those of a racoon; with long fingers but NO claws, you could also compare the hands with those of a Grivet (Chlorocebus aethiops) monkey.
Its knees were very round and fluffy. And surprisingly he had NO tail.
His face was sharp but with childlike big round eyes, big ears - a bit catlike ears - and his nose seemed a crossing between a human and a racoon (sharper than human but not with the wet-nose-dot that animals have). The Moss-hair grew in a tip on his forehead.
His shoulders only reached the height of my knees, so his lovely little face looked just over the rim of my knees. When he first walked up to me, he looked so sweet, I bent over to him and he held my face in his two small hands and looked up at me with a sort of smile (like cats have) it was endearing and I held his tiny little shoulders in embrace for a moment and then he went back to the woods.
I was very happy with this friendly meeting.
Unfortunately I cannot draw to save my life, but I can see his picture in my minds-eye, very clearly.
So, if any of the readers feel like drawing a picture of my Familiar do leave a reaction under this article mentioning your e-mail and I will contact you and send a first impression sketch I tried to make. I made the face too round and I didn't finish the arms, and the legs don't look like anything, but it could set a "frame" as to what he looked like.
This ritual also spoke of finding a stone in your hand with a symbol on it. I got that straight away! A flat white palmstone appeared with a black symbol on it that looks like a crossing between a trilobite and a labyrinth. I copied the symbol on a piece of paper and understood that this symbol will help to call my Familiar.
And now I come to his name... I decided as he looks like Elder wood upfront and like Moss at the back I will call him ElderMoss and he seemed to agree with that.
The rest of the ritual explained how to conjure him up, how to send him away, how to control him and how to release him... but I thought that was an awful idea.
I would never want to control some other living creature, so I did none of those things and simply considered ElderMoss as a new friend. He is a nature spirit, much like the Greenman, but smaller. I took a measuring tape and estimated his height and I come to an approximate 65cm.
I hope I'll meet him again soon and that we can have a meaningful friendship and can help eachother.
