Last summer, we (= me, my husband and our three children) went on a holiday to Nairobi and NorthernTanzania. For the single day in Nairobi we appealed to Victoria Safaris (a local touroperator), and we visited the slums of Kibera (Nairobi). It was a very gripping tour. It gives you the opportunity to enter an unknown world which is not open to Western tourists. You are free to do as one likes (accompanied by 3 residents). You see the every day things and life, and the way this (specific) world is organised. We even were invited to the house of 2 residents. With justified pride they present you also some projects, organised by local people trying to improve their social circumstances (f.e. Powerwomen (group of women selling self-made products), Mama Tunza (school for orphaned children)). Also interesting is the Biogas-project where gas is produced from the public toilets. I had the impression that this tour has an added value for both the visitors as the local people of Kibera (not for the money but just to know that people outside the slums are interested in their way of life). I recommend this tour strongly to all Western people, especially to families with teenagers.

Public toilets in the Biogas-centre.
The gas produced in the Biogas-centre is used in the centre itself for (public) cooking.
Upstairs the Biogas-tour, the space is used for commom activities (f.ex. watching football-matches on TV).
