On May 02, 1991 I joined the Belgian para troopers. The first day of paratrooper training at Wartet, Marches-les-Dames. The basic para trooper training last 3 months, containing of running, tactics, obstacle courses, shooting, long hikes, etc.... One month of commando training, containing of rock climbing, all sorts of commando techniques, high altitude obstacle courses, jungle bridges, etc. At the end of that month we were awarded the Commando A-certificate and the Red "para trooper" beret. (Red = in fact it's purple, but all say Red beret) One month of para training, about 1,5 week hanging in straps simulating a parachute jump. We finaly made our first jump. The first 3 jumps are from a balloon, also called the Pig. It's a Zeppelin with a basket underneath, containing 1 jumpmaster and 5 paras. All jumps are static jumps. Static line, is a 5 m long line, hooked up on a steel cable in the plane or the balloon. Attached to the parachute, which opens the chute after exciting the airplane. The 5 next jumps are from C-130 Hercules transport plane. After those 8 jumps we got our Para A wing.
