Cape Coast, or Cabo Corso, is the capital of the Central Region of Ghana and is also the capital city of the Fante (Fanti) people, or Mfantsefo. It is situated 165 km west of Accra and 185 of Tema on the Gulf of Guinea. It has a population of 82,000. From the 16th century the city has changed hands between the British, the Portuguese, theSwedish, the Danish and the Dutch. The city's Fante name is Oguaa.
Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center Tema
Based in Ghana, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) provides training and research in peacekeeping and peaceoperations. Established in 1998, it formally began operations in 2002. KAIPTC commenced its first full annual training and education cycle in March 2004, and has since expanded its curriculum to over twenty different courses.
The Tema Harbour is in Tema, Ghana's most industrialized city. The harbour is located in the southeastern part of Ghana, along the Gulf of Guinea. It was built 34 years after the smaller of Ghana's harbours the Takoradi Harbour in the Western region was built. The harbour is Africa's largest man-made harbour.
The Akosombo Dam, is a hydroelectric dam on the Volta River in southeastern Ghana in the Akosombo gorge and part of the Volta River Authority. The construction of the dam flooded part of the Volta River Basin, and the subsequent creation of Lake Volta. Lake Volta is the world's largest man-made lake, covering 8,502 square kilometres (3,283 sq mi), which is 3.6% of Ghana's land area.The primary purpose of the Akosombo Dam was to provide electricity for the aluminum industry. The Akosombo Dam was called "the largest single investment in the economic development plans of Ghana." Its original electrical output was 912mw, which was upgraded to 1,020 mw in a retrofit project that was completed in 2006.The flooding that created the Lake Volta reservoir displaced many people and had a significant impact on the environment.
