The Red Hot Chili Peppers, formed in Los Angeles, are a rather controversial American, alternative rock band.
Controversial because of the several changings of the band members and their extremely way of living. 
Even the type of music is difficult to describe, because it consists of rock, heavy metal and also funk, punk, rock, hip-hop and psychedelic rock are a part of that “varied” musical style.

Perhaps  the titles of the albums can give some explanation for that strange kind of music:
“Mothers Milk”, “ Blood, Sugar Sex Magik” “One hot minute”. 
But after all the albums were not always even successfully,
 for example ““Blood Sugar Sex Magik”  sold less than half the copies of its predecessor  “Mothers Milk”.

As a result of the these financial failures some famous members were resigned. 
For example,  Jack Irons , who was featured by Anthony Kiedis and Micael Balzary, did have to leave the group after Hillel Slovak died after a  heroin overdose in 1988.
 On the other hand,  Dave Navarro,  rejoined the band after he was resigned and nearly died of a severe drug addiction and it resulted in a sell of fifteen million units worldwide, becoming their most successful album to date. 
Their albums who followed were nominated several times for different famous music awards.
The in 2006 released double album “Stadium Arcadium” was voted the second best album of 2006 by Rolling stone, in 2007 it was nominated for the Album of the year by Grammy.

Hopefully now, you understand why the Red Hot Chili Peppers are controversial and may be, that could be seen as the reason for their success.
