EU triples aid for refugees fleeing Libya
The EU has announced a trebling of aid for refugees fleeing Libya to 10 million euros.
The extra cash follows a UN call for an international response to the deteriorating humanitarian situation on the Libyan-Tunisian border.
European Commission President Jose Manuel Borroso made it clear he wants Gaddafi’s crumbling regime to go: “We must do everything so that the current regime leaves the country and stops its actions against the Libyan people.”
The EU plans a crisis summit next week to discuss the border situation and the chaos within Libya itself.
Kristalina Georgieva, the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, said: “In the Benghazi area, we have humanitarian teams already on the ground, and they report that there is a need for medical assistance. Because the Libyan health system had foreigners at its heart and they have left, leaving behind a huge void, which has to be filled.”
Brussels has also made 25 million euros available to help process asylum seekers and boost border checks at EU frontiers.
German Chancellor suffers poll defeat
German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats have suffered their worst defeat in an election since the second world war.
In the Hamburg state poll the CDU’s share of the vote fell a record 21 points, handing a massive victory to the opposition Social Democrats.
The result could have serious repercussions for the other six state elections due to take place this year.
In a news conference after the defeat,Merkel blamed local political changes for the defeat. She said that when the Christian Democrat Mayor Ole von Beust resigned, he handed over power to Christoph Ahlhaus. This angered the voters of Hamburg because Ahlhaus was not elected by them.
The winning candidate, Olaf Scholz, promised to govern the city of Hamburg with pragmatism, which he said must play an important role in politics.
He said politicians need to deal with economic competence and social unrest, together, instead of simply speaking out against them.
Air-strikes offer Libya’s rebels reprieve
Only a few days ago Libyan rebels were on the verge of being crushed by forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi. However, the heavy bombardment by the Western led coalition appears to have swung the momentum in Libya’s civil war.
The main road out of the eastern city of Benghazi is now littered with the regime’s vehicles scorched by attacks from the air.

That’s allowed the opposition to push towards Ajdabiya, though for the time being the town remains under Gaddafi’s control.
Rebel units also appear severely disorganised, underscoring US warnings that a long stalemate could emerge.
In addition, the forces loyal to the Libyan leader appear determined to fight on, with reports of offensives on Tuesday morning on the western cities of Misrata and Zintan.
Euro zone January inflation revised down
It turns out euro zone inflation was not quite as bad as initially calculated in January. The European Union statistics office has revised down its estimate to 2.3 percent year-on-year – the earlier projection was 2.4 percent.
But that lower figure is still well above the European Central Bank’s target and likely to rise further in February due mainly to more expensive oil.
And Howard Archer, an economist at IHS Global Insight, pointed out: “The downward revision is due to a marked drop in Italian inflation due to a change in its methodology.”
He added: “The fact remains that euro zone consumer price inflation is still at a 27-month high and set to rise further in the near term due to the spike in oil prices as well as elevated commodity and food prices.”
The European Central Bank wants to keep inflation below, but close to two percent over a two-year horizon. The bank has said inflation was likely to peak in March, but that on average inflation in the euro zone may stay above two percent this year.
BASF back on dividend track
Germany’s BASF has pleased its shareholders with an improved dividend payout for last year as its sales to the car industry picked up.
The world’s biggest chemicals company in sales terms had had to cut its dividend for 2009 because of the effects of the global economic crisis, it was the first time in 16 years it had done that.
However BASF’s fourth quarter earnings were less than forecast at 1.7 billion euros.
The maker of coatings and catalytic converters has been helped by a buoyant car sector, one of its key customer industries, and the start of a recovery in demand from builders for its insulation foams.
That has allowed it to pass on higher raw material costs to customers.
BASF said 2011 sales and operating earnings are set to clearly exceed last year’s levels, and gains should also continue next year.
Libya divided into protests and celebrations
Conflict rages in the west of Libya, but in the East, there are celebrations.
In Benghazi they are waiting for Tripoli to fall and on the streets of the city, everyone thinks that will happen very soon.
A reporter on the scene, Francesca Cicardi, told euronews, groups of volunteers are leaving Benghazi to head for Tripoli and join the fight against Gaddafi’s forces.
“A week after the uprising in Benghazi, the people here have got together here to form what is being called a “revolutionary committee” to act as the new local government, managing the city and forging links with other towns in the east.” she added.
“Everyone here is celebrating and waiting for the revolution to spread to the west. The word is that the country will not be divided and Tripoli will continue as the capital of Libya.”

Defiant Berlusconi vows to see out term
Is the party over for Silvio Berlusconi?
Several of today’s Italian newspapers believe early elections are inevitable after the prime minister was indicted for trial over alleged sex offences and abuse of power.
Prosecutors say they have ample evidence he paid for sex with an underage prostitute and intervened with police to try to free her from custody.
Berlusconi insists it is business as usual. He claims his coalition partners remain on board in government and has vowed to see out his term until 2013.
“I can only say one thing: I’m not worried at all. Okay? That’s all,” he smiled as he spoke at a news conference.
The Moroccan dancer known as Ruby, at the centre of the case, has denied having sex with Berlusconi but admits receiving several thousand euros after going to a party at his villa.
The prime minister, who denies any wrongdoing, believes the charges are politically motivated.
He still has his backers: “I judge him as a politician who’s made a big contribution, and will continue to do so for the good of Italy,” said one man in Rome.
“They only talk about this … enough is enough. They’re not talking about politics anymore. They’re talking just about him…that’s all,” complained another.
Satirists are having a field day. An Italian band has rewritten Shakira’s song Waka Waka, calling it “Bunga Bunga”… Berlusconi’s own term for his infamous parties.
Warren Christopher dies
US negotiator Warren Christopher has died at his home in Los Angeles of cancer, at the age of 85.
The former US Secretary of State is credited, amongst other achievements, with helping bring peace to Bosnia, and negotiating the release of hostages from Iran.
His personal style was so self-effacing that he became affectionate known as “the stealth diplomat”. This was somewhate belied by his elegant dress sense which once earned him the title of People Magazne’s Best Dressed Man in America.
He famously remarked that “careful listening may be the secret weapon”, telling the New York Times “I observed some time ago that I was better at listening than at talking.”
“Talkng is often tedious,” he said. “It can be excruciating and exhausting. But talkng can tame conflict, lift the human condition and move us closer to the ideal of peace.”
Sweden’s extradition of Assange approved
A British judge has ruled that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should be extradited to Sweden to face sexual offense charges.
Assange denies the sexual assault and rape allegations against him and claims they are politically motivated. He has infuriated the United States government by publishing embarrassing secret diplomatic documents online.
His lawyers had argued that he would not face a fair trial that is open to the public in Sweden and that he then risks being extradited to the US to face charges related to his whistle-blowing activities and could face the death penalty.
A lawyer representing Swedish prosecutors said that the evidence in the sex offense trial would be heard behind closed doors but that the arguments would be then made public.
Assange was arrested under a European Arrest Warrant in December before being released on bail nine days later. His lawyer says he will appeal the Swedish extradition ruling.

Armenian protesters call on government to go
Thousands of demonstrators in the Armenian capital Yerevan have called on the government to resign, in the former Soviet republic’s largest protest for three years.
The opposition are predicting a bloodless “velvet revolution” inspired by the Arab uprisings.
They accuse the current president, Serzh Sarkisian, of vote rigging to get elected.
Japanese nuclear disaster: lessons to be learned
The scientific community is trying to learn the lessons from Fukushima.
The disaster in Japan has highlighted areas where nuclear plants might be vulnerable, especially those that have been in operation for a while.
Experts want to learn how to protect future generations from disasters like this one, that put entire populations in danger.
Euronews spoke to Luis Echavarri, Director-General of the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
Beatriz Beiras, euronews:“Mr Echavarri, the IAEA has confirmed that the cores of reactors 1, 2 and 3 of the Fukushima nuclear plant run a risk of meltdown. What does that mean exactly?”
Luis Echavarri: “That means that the temperatures reached made the rods melt and could also make the fuel melt. That means that the fuel is becoming impaired and that it is producing more fission products and as full cooling could not take place, this process has progressed.”
euronews:“But does that have an impact on radiation?”
Luis Echavarri:“Yes, because the higher the temperature is and the more the fuel deteriorates, the more fission products are produced. And as a result, the radioactivity given off is greater. So the continuation of this process must be avoided. That is why cooling is needed.”
euronews:“Can it cause an explosion?”
Luis Echavarri:“No, no, not at all. That absolutely can’t happen. You must take into account that, for example, unlike the Chernobyl accident, here the safety mechanisms were activated quickly because of the earthquake. So the only heat is the remaining heat and in this situation an explosion caused by an uncontrolled reaction cannot happen.”
euronews:“If water does not succeed in cooling the reactors, do you think that Tepco has other means of stopping this time bomb?”
Luis Echavarri:“I think that water and other products like, for example, boric acid, are important in reducing the possible damage to the fuel. But it is difficult to find a solution apart from using water. The latest news we have had is that they are in the process of bringing in electricity from outside the plant and if that is confirmed, it would lead to the use of a lot more cooling systems in the plant and that could help enormously in getting the site back to normal. But, fundamentally, two elements are necessary: electricity and water.”
euronews:“Should we be worried, for example, about the arrival of a radioactive cloud in other Asian countries or even in America or Europe? “
Luis Echavarri:“No. I think the distances involved mean that radioactivity is going to be present, because the radioactivity will be felt across the planet, especially in the northern hemisphere – but at very low levels. The radiation is diluting, and the further it spreads, the more it dilutes. What is important are the areas closest to the plant. And gradually the radioactivity is decreasing. So I think that outside Japan, there is no need to worry, even if it will be experienced elsewhere because tiny quantities of radioactivity are easy to detect.”
euronews:“You are a nuclear engineer. Briefly, as a technician, what are the lessons to be learned from this accident?”
Luis Echavarri:“Briefly, it is difficult. I would say that, first of all, we have to analyse whether all nuclear plants are adequately prepared from a conceptual point of view to deal with bigger earthquakes or tsunamis than we had imagined and which are possible in certain places.
“We also have to make an in-depth analysis of the consequences of the tsunami; why it damaged so many emergency installations, if they could have been salvaged in another way, if there are extra safety systems to avoid this sort of situation. And we also have to look again at the containment units, emergency cooling systems, hydrogen explosions, fires, radiological protection, intervening in contaminated zones. They are all lessons that we are going to have to learn to apply to all the nuclear plants in the world – a process which has already begun. All regulatory bodies have already begun an analytical process to apply the lessons to their own plants.”
Italy alarmed by Tunisian migrants
The head of the EU’s border control agency, Frontex, says the Tunisian government must take some of the responsibility for what he calls the “traumatic situation in Lampedusa.”
The Italian island is under strain from thousands of migrants who have crossed the sea from Tunisia in the past week.
Speaking on the sidelines of a European police conference in Berlin, Ilkka Laitinen said: “That has to be solved in a comprehensive way, putting all the political sectors together, putting all the practitioners, authorities together with a common strategy. Border control is part of this solution but it is not the [only] solution.”
The authorities in Rome are alarmed. The Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini has said he fears a further influx of migrants into Italy from other north African countries, as part of repercussions of the instability in Tunisia.
Italy has began moving Tunisian migrants from Lampedusa, while calling on EU partners to help take up the strain of accommodating refugees and asylum seekers.

From punk, through classical to theatrical, the extravagant designs show little sign of the recession still affecting most of the world, although some designers have introduced more affordable ranges.

Terminator might not be back
Former governor of California, ex-Holywood actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife Maria Shriver, have said they are separating.
The couple said they need time to work on the future of their relationship.
The surprise announcement comes four months after Schwarzenegger left office in January.
Japanese parts shortage closes GM plant in US
General Motors is to temporarily close one of its US factories due to a shortage of parts that are made in Japan.
It is a sign of the growing effects on the industry from the Japanese earthquake one week ago.
The GM plant in Shreveport, Louisiana makes pick-up trucks and will close from 21 March.
Analysts said production of cars worldwide is likely to be affected unless Japanese suppliers revive their plants and start sending parts soon.
Tim Denoyer, an auto industry analyst with Wolfe Trahan & Co said infrastructure issues in Japan threatened to extend the time these plants are idled.
He said Honda is still not in touch with 44 of its 113 suppliers in the quake zone.
Nissan’s Senior Vice President Andy Palmer commented: “It only takes one supplier to stop a car plant.”
GM said it had “sufficient” vehicles to meet consumer demand and that it hoped to open the Shreveport plant as soon as possible, although it did not specify a timeframe.
The largest US carmaker confirmed that its other North American plants are operating normally.
Yemen opposition reject unity govt with Saleh
Yemen’s opposition parties have said they will reject any offer from President Ali Abdullah Saleh to form a unity government.

The offer is expected to be made within the next 24 hours but Yemen’s opposition coalition insisted they would not compromise over their key demand that Saleh must resign.
Mass rallies against the president’s 32-year rule began over a month ago.
Saleh has already said he will not seek re-election at the end of his current seven-year term in 2013 but that promise has failed to quell the unrest.

WAT IS CONCREET DE BEDOELING??
De bedoeling is dat u op regelmatige basis een bericht toevoegt op uw blog. U kan hierin zetten wat u zelf wenst.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u heeft een blog gemaakt voor gedichten. Dan kan u bvb. elke dag een gedicht toevoegen op uw blog. U geeft de titel in van het gedicht en daaronder in het bericht het gedicht zelf. Zo kunnen uw bezoekers dagelijks terugkomen om uw laatste nieuw gedicht te lezen. Indien u meerdere gedichten wenst toe te voegen op eenzelfde dag, voegt u deze toe als afzonderlijke berichten, dus niet in één bericht.
- Bijvoorbeeld:
u wil een blog maken over de actualiteit. Dan kan u bvb. dagelijks een bericht plaatsen met uw mening over iets uit de actualiteit. Bvb. over een bepaalde ramp, ongeval, uitspraak, voorval,... U geeft bvb. in de titel het onderwerp waarover u het gaat hebben en in het bericht plaatst u uw mening over dat onderwerp. Zo kan u bvb. meedelen dat de media voor de zoveelste keer het fout heeft, of waarom ze nu dat weer in de actualiteit brengen,... Of u kan ook meer diepgaande artikels plaatsen en meer informatie over een bepaald onderwerp opzoeken en dit op uw blog plaatsen. Indien u over meerdere zaken iets wil zeggen op die dag, plaatst u deze als afzonderlijke berichten, zo is dit het meest duidelijk voor uw bezoekers.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u wil een blog maken als dagboek. Dagelijks maakt u een bericht aan met wat u er wenst in te plaatsen, zoals u anders in een dagboek zou plaatsen. Dit kan zijn over wat u vandaag hebt gedaan, wat u vandaag heeft gehoord, wat u van plan bent, enz. Maak een titel en typ het bericht. Zo kunnen bezoekers dagelijks naar uw blog komen om uw laatste nieuwe bericht te lezen en mee uw dagboek te lezen.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u wil een blog maken met plaatselijk nieuws. Met uw eigen blog kan u zo zelfs journalist zijn. U kan op uw blog het plaatselijk nieuws vertellen. Telkens u iets nieuw hebt, plaats u een bericht: u geeft een titel op en typt wat u weet over het nieuws. Dit kan zijn over een feest in de buurt, een verkeersongeval in de streek, een nieuwe baan die men gaat aanleggen, een nieuwe regeling, verkiezingen, een staking, een nieuwe winkel, enz. Afhankelijk van het nieuws plaatst u iedere keer een nieuw bericht. Indien u veel nieuws heeft, kan u zo dagelijks vele berichten plaatsen met wat u te weten bent gekomen over uw regio. Zorg ervoor dat u telkens een nieuw bericht ingeeft per onderwerp, en niet zaken samen plaatst. Indien u wat minder nieuws kan bijeen sprokkelen is uiteraard 1 bericht per dag of 2 berichten per week ook goed. Probeer op een regelmatige basis een berichtje te plaatsen, zo komen uw bezoekers telkens terug.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u wil een blog maken met een reisverslag. U kan een bericht aanmaken per dag van uw reis. Zo kan u in de titel opgeven over welke dag u het gaat hebben, en in het bericht plaatst u dan het verslag van die dag. Zo komen alle berichten onder elkaar te staan, netjes gescheiden per dag. U kan dus op éénzelfde dag meerdere berichten ingeven van uw reisverslag.
- Bijvoorbeeld:
u wil een blog maken met tips op. Dan maakt u telkens u een tip heeft een nieuw bericht aan. In de titel zet u waarover uw tip zal gaan. In het bericht geeft u dan de hele tip in. Probeer zo op regelmatige basis nieuwe tips toe te voegen, zodat bezoekers telkens terug komen naar uw blog. Probeer bvb. 1 keer per dag, of 2 keer per week een nieuwe tip zo toe te voegen. Indien u heel enthousiast bent, kan u natuurlijk ook meerdere tips op een dag ingeven. Let er dan op dat het meest duidelijk is indien u pér tip een nieuw bericht aanmaakt. Zo kan u dus bvb. wel 20 berichten aanmaken op een dag indien u 20 tips heeft voor uw bezoekers.
- Bijvoorbeeld:
u wil een blog maken dat uw activiteiten weerspiegelt. U bent bvb. actief in een bedrijf, vereniging of organisatie en maakt elke dag wel eens iets mee. Dan kan je al deze belevenissen op uw blog plaatsen. Het komt dan neer op een soort van dagboek. Dan kan u dagelijks, of eventueel meerdere keren per dag, een bericht plaatsen op uw blog om uw belevenissen te vertellen. Geef een titel op dat zeer kort uw belevenis beschrijft en typ daarna alles in wat u maar wenst in het bericht. Zo kunnen bezoekers dagelijks of meermaals per dag terugkomen naar uw blog om uw laatste belevenissen te lezen.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u wil een blog maken uw hobby. U kan dan op regelmatige basis, bvb. dagelijks, een bericht toevoegen op uw blog over uw hobby. Dit kan gaan dat u vandaag een nieuwe postzegel bij uw verzameling heeft, een nieuwe bierkaart, een grote vis heeft gevangen, enz. Vertel erover en misschien kan je er zelfs een foto bij plaatsen. Zo kunnen anderen die ook dezelfde hobby hebben dagelijks mee lezen. Als u bvb. zeer actief bent in uw hobby, kan u dagelijks uiteraard meerdere berichtjes plaatsen, met bvb. de laatste nieuwtjes. Zo trek je veel bezoekers aan.
WAT ZIJN DIE "REACTIES"?
Een bezoeker kan op een bericht van u een reactie plaatsen. Een bezoeker kan dus zelf géén bericht plaatsen op uw blog zelf, wel een reactie. Het verschil is dat de reactie niet komt op de beginpagina, maar enkel bij een bericht hoort. Het is dus zo dat een reactie enkel gaat over een reactie bij een bericht. Indien u bvb. een gedicht heeft geschreven, kan een reactie van een bezoeker zijn dat deze het heel mooi vond. Of bvb. indien u plaatselijk nieuws brengt, kan een reactie van een bezoeker zijn dat deze nog iets meer over de feiten weet (bvb. exacte uur van het ongeval, het juiste locatie van het evenement,...). Of bvb. indien uw blog een dagboek is, kan men reageren op het bericht van die dag, zo kan men meeleven met u, u een vraag stellen, enz. Deze functie kan u uitschakelen via "Instellingen" indien u dit niet graag heeft.
WAT IS DE "WAARDERING"?
Een bezoeker kan een bepaald bericht een waardering geven. Dit is om aan te geven of men dit bericht goed vindt of niet. Het kan bvb. gaan over een bericht, hoe goed men dat vond. Het kan ook gaan over een ander bericht, bvb. een tip, die men wel of niet bruikbaar vond. Deze functie kan u uitschakelen via "Instellingen" indien u dit niet graag heeft.
