Rival forces exchange gunfire in Yemen
A peaceful sit-in protest ended in tragedy in Aden, southern Yemen late on Saturday after police dispersed the protesters with gunfire. A 16 year-old boy was hit by a stray bullet and died in hospital.
Earlier in the day for the first time pro and anti-government supporters exchanged gunfire in the capital, Sanaa. The flashpoint came when government loyalists attempted to storm the university campus, which has been at the centre of the week-long protests against President Saleh.
In another first, one of the leaders of the opposition has called for the president to quit. Sons of Yemen Secretary General Mohsin Fareed said dialogue had become a “waste of time”.
Protests also continued in Taiz, Yemen’s second city and flared in Karish. 50 members of the president’s party resigned in protest at the actions of the security services, but in many places they were nowhere to be seen, seemingly content to let the pro and anti-camps fight it out.
UK criteria for Libya no-fly zone ‘satisfied’
The British Foreign Secretary has explained his decision to push the no-fly resolution against Libya at the UN Security Council.
William Hague spoke after the resolution authorizing “all necessary measures“??� codename for military action. He said the three criteria that Britain was seeking to see satisfied had been done so.
He said to be able to take action a “demonstrable need” should be present, which Gaddafi??�s regime has provided in the recent days. He also said a “legal basis” was required that now the UN resolution provides.
Mr. Hague said the third aspect was a “broad support from within the region itself and that is evident in the statement of the Arab League and in the readiness to participate in a no fly zone, for instance, by members of the Arab League.”
The resolution passed after 10 of the 15 Security Council members voted in favour. There were no votes against but China and Russia were among five abstentions. The vote in New York was attended by Tripoli??�s ambassador to the UN, Mohamed Shalgham, who last month publicly denounced the Libyan leader.
The UK as well as France took the lead in drafting the resolution and were co-sponsors. Mr. Hague said:
“We have said all along that Gaddafi must go; that the Libyan people must be able to have a more representative Government and determine their own future. And it is necessary to take these measures to avoid greater bloodshed, to try to stop what is happening in terms of the attacks on civilians and on the people of Libya.”

The band’s high-energy, vintage Brit songs, is just what appeals at the moment. Their debut album “What Did You Expect From the Vaccines?” shot straight to number 2 in the UK charts after its release on March 14.
Tunisia asks for help in tackling border chaos
Tunisia’s government has called for help in dealing with the thousands of Egyptian labourers and other foreign workers who have streamed across the border to avoid the turmoil in Libya.
With so many people to cope with, most have been given the minimum to survive – some milk and bread and perhaps a blanket.
“The situation here is almost a catastrophe,” said one man. “We call on all the organisations of the world, all governments, all humanitarian associations to intervene to help these people return home with dignity.”
The United Nations has called on Libya’s neighbours to keep their borders open and not to restrict those fleeing the violence.
Euronews reporter Jamel Ezzeddi said: “Tens of thousands of Egyptians and other foreigners were having to spend another night outside at the mercy of the elements in Ras Jedir. Everyone hopes that tomorrow will bring a solution to end their suffering as the aid efforts from the Tunisians are not nearly enough.”
Kurdish protesters clash with police in Turkey
There have been clashes between Kurdish protesters and police in Turkey during demonstrations marking the 12th anniversary of the capture of Kurdish separatist leader Abdullah Ocalan.
Protesters threw missiles during clashes in 12 towns and cities. Police used tear gas and water cannons to break up the crowds, angry about Kurdistan Workers’ Party leader Ocalan’s ongoing imprisonment. At least 30 people were arrested.
Trial date set for beleaguered Berlusconi
The date of April 6 has been set for the trial of Italy’s scandal-hit prime minister.
It is then that Silvio Berlusconi’s lawyers will have to defend him against charges of abuse of power and paying for sex with an under-age prostitute.
The indictment sheet was issued by a court in Milan, where three female judges will examine the evidence. Berlusconi is not obliged to appear in person before the judicial panel on that day.
The case concerns allegations that he paid for sex with a 17-year-old Moroccan dancer, then intervened to try to free her when she was arrested for theft.
His supporters say the whole case is politically motivated.
Analyst James Walston said that while the charges were serious, Berlusconi is not the resigning type:
“He is a fighter; he has survived many other accusations and indictments even though he has been found guilty but let off. The other point, which makes this different from the corruption charges and from the slush fund accusations, it’s a very clear and obvious charge.”
But Berlusconi’s legal team is playing down any threat and dismissing the case. His lawyer Francesco Paolo said: “I think it is really difficult to talk of an under-age prostitute, when that woman denies both the sexual intercourse and having been paid.”
Berlusconi’s term in office has been beset by scandal and corruption allegations, but this latest criticism of his behaviour recently mobilised public anger as never before.
State of emergency in Yemen after protest bloodbath
Yemen has declared a state of emergency after a massacre at an anti-government rally.
More than 40 people were killed and at least 300 others injured when plainclothes police reportedly opened fire on protesters after Friday prayers.
President Ali Abdullah Saleh described it as a tragedy and blamed the violence on people within the crowd who were carrying weapons.
“I express my extreme sorrow for what happened today after Friday prayers in the university district,” Saleh told a news conference in Sanaa.
Yemen is the second country in the region to declare emergency rule this week after Bahrain introduced martial law – a move immediately followed by a massive crackdown on demonstrators.
But it is unclear whether Yemen’s president has the military power to enforce such an order, with the country deeply divided and racked by weeks of protests in which more than 70 people have been killed.
Missiles rain down on Libya
The night sky over the Mediterranean coast of Libya lit up on Saturday night as operation Odyssey Dawn got into gear.
110 cruise missiles were fired as part of the military response from the USA, Britain and other European nations.

Air strikes also took place, with the French firing the first missiles around Benghazi in the east.
In Tripoli some people took to the streets amidst heavy anti-aircraft fire
A Pentagon military spokesman gave details of the intentions of the exercise and the intended targets.
He said the initial aim was firstly to impair Gaddafi’s military capability in the east, particularly around Benghazi, with the French playing the major role.
U.S and British missiles had been aimed at destroying Libya’s air capability, by targeting around 20 radar and anti-aircraft sites.
Meanwhile British fighter jets had targeted strategic sites around the capital Tripoli.
The attacks are aimed at enforcing the UN Security Council’s no-fly zone mandate, and are the most significant international military effort since the invasion of Iraq.
US President Obama said the use of force had not been his first choice, and again said he will not send ground forces.
Colonel Gaddafi said the strikes are unjustified, calling the action “colonial aggression”.
Unilateral ceasefire declared by Tripoli
The government of Muammer Gadaffi has declared a unilateral ceasefire just hours after the UN announced a no-fly zone over Libya, a decision that gives the green light for air strikes on Gadaffi’s forces.
Libyan Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa addressed the world’s media in the capital Tripoli. He said: “We decided on an immediate ceasefire and on an immediate stop to all military operations across the country. Libya was surprised about the resolution, which permits military action against the Libyan people.”

Still, the British, French, Arab League and others will hold meetings on Saturday to discuss the implementation of the no-fly zone.
Sweetened offer wins Genzyme for Sanofi
French drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis has agreed to buy US biotech group Genzyme with a improved cash offer the equivalent of almost 14.9 billion euros.
It will also make additional payments based on the success of Genzyme’s drugs.
The acquisition comes nine months after it was first proposed and the deal should increase Sanofi’s earnings through Genzyme’s treatments for rare diseases.
The value of the extra payments will depend on Genzyme’s experimental multiple sclerosis drug Lemtrada and production of two other medicines.
It is the second-biggest deal in biotech history and will help Sanofi offset declining revenue from drugs that have lost, or are going to lose, patent protection, which means competitors can make cheaper so-called ‘generic’ versions.
Shares in Sanofi rose as investors welcomed the boost to earnings.
International coalition gears up to strike Gaddafi
RAF fighter jets are set to play a frontline role in the international military operation against Colonel Gaddafi’s forces.
Britain will make a key contribution, despite divisions at home over its protracted and controversial campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq.
With many strategically-placed platforms, NATO is still defining what its mission will be. The French will be heavily involved. Italy, Libya’s former colonial power, has offered its airbases. But fellow members Turkey and Gemany have spoken against alliance intervention.
While the US has warships in the region, questions remain over its participation in an initial operation against Libyan forces.

On paper, the Gaddafi military machine before the uprising comprised 100,000 troops, backed by heavy artillery, tanks, warplanes and a small navy.
After seemingly endless rounds of diplomacy, the use of force was authorised by the UN Security Council on Thursday. Russia, Germany and China were among 5 of its 15 members to abstain.
French FM defends Tunisia links once again
French Foreign Minister Michele Alliot-Marie has again been forced to defend her links to the regime of ousted Tunisian president Zine Al-Abdine Ben Ali.
Alliot-Marie holidayed in Tunisia in December during anti-government protests.
She flew there on a private jet belonging to Aziz Miled, a Ben Ali associate.
Her office admitted she spoke with Ben Ali during her stay, contradicting her earlier account that her visit was a purely personal affair.
Le Canard Enchaine newspaper also reported on Wednesday that her parents bought a stake in a property company from Aziz Miled.
Alliot-Marie has refused to resign and has attacked the French media for dragging her parents into the matter.

UK report calls for more women in top jobs
Women should occupy at least a quarter of jobs on the boards of the UK’s top companies within four years, suggests a report issued by the government.
But Lord Davies of Abersoch, a former trade minister who led the review, stopped short of introducing quotas to force companies to hire more female executives.
Women make up 46 percent of the active population in the UK but only 12.5 percent of positions on the boards of FTSE 100 companies. Eighteen FTSE 100 companies and almost half of FTSE 250 companies have no female directors. Yet 60 percent of university graduates are women.
In his report Davies said that “radical change is needed in the mindset of the business community” with regards to gender equality, adding:
“This is not just about aiming for a specific figure and is not just about promoting equal opportunities but it is about improving business performance. There is growing evidence to show that diverse boards are better boards, delivering financial out-performance and stock market growth.”
Davies suggests that within six months, companies should set their own targets for boosting female board representation and then either achieve them or explain why they failed to. Those targets should be set for 2013 and 2015, he added.
The report goes on to say that if these voluntary targets were unsuccessful, then quotas should be considered as an alternative.
Norway agreed to introduce a 40 percent quota of female directors of listed companies in 2003. Since then the rate of female representation on boards has shot up from 6.8 percent to around the 40 percent required by the quota. France and Spain have launched similar initiatives. Supporters of the quota system say voluntary targets are ineffective and often go ignored.
But many in the business sector are keen to avoid government-imposed quotas, arguing that they would be too inflexible and would not reflect the different circumstances of individual companies.
The report also encourages investors to take into consideration gender equality when re-appointing board members and urges head-hunting firms to draw up a voluntary code of practice to address gender diversity.
Eyewitness says situation is dangerous in Libya
Despite western journalists being banned from reporting in Libya, eyewitness accounts are managing to get through. One man gave his view of the situation.
Eye witness said, “ according to information from Benghazi, the people there are in control with the help of the army.It is no longer under the control of Gaddafi, even the military aircraft that were sent to bomb civilians have not carried out their orders. However, the planes have bombed two locations Fachloum Tajurah and they’ve fired on people in the streets.
The situation is serious – it’s a regime which kills its own children… we think there are ten people dead in Tajurah and between fifty and sixty in Tripoli. Young people are determined to demonstrate and they’re just waiting for the right moment.”

Chinese police clampdown on anti-government protests
Despite their efforts to block information spreading about the Arab uprisings, anti-government protests have erupted in several cities. But an emphatic show of force by police in Shanghai quickly ended the protest.
It was a similar story in downtown Beijing where lines of police checked passers-by and warned away demonstrators.
A rash of detentions and censorship of online discussions have shown that the Communist Party is concerned about any challenge to its rule.
Residents in Hong Kong, however, enjoy a little more freedom. Some inspired by the so-called Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia took to the streets. Police soon ended the demonstration.
A call for protests a week ago brought out few people. But dozens of dissidents and human rights activists have reportedly been detained or warned to avoid any action which risks social stability.

Vervolgens klikt u op de knop 'Verwijderen' die achter dit bericht staat (achter de titel 'Proficiat!'). Nog even bevestigen dat u dit bericht wenst te verwijderen en het bericht is verwijderd. U kan dit op dezelfde manier in de toekomst berichten wijzigen of verwijderen.
Er zijn nog een hele reeks extra mogelijkheden en functionaliteiten die u kan gebruiken voor uw blog. Log in op http://www.bloggen.be/ en geef uw gebruikersnaam en wachtwoord op. Klik vervolgens op 'Instellingen'. Daar kan u een hele reeks zaken aanpassen, extra functies toevoegen, enz.
WAT IS CONCREET DE BEDOELING??
De bedoeling is dat u op regelmatige basis een bericht toevoegt op uw blog. U kan hierin zetten wat u zelf wenst.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u heeft een blog gemaakt voor gedichten. Dan kan u bvb. elke dag een gedicht toevoegen op uw blog. U geeft de titel in van het gedicht en daaronder in het bericht het gedicht zelf. Zo kunnen uw bezoekers dagelijks terugkomen om uw laatste nieuw gedicht te lezen. Indien u meerdere gedichten wenst toe te voegen op eenzelfde dag, voegt u deze toe als afzonderlijke berichten, dus niet in één bericht.
- Bijvoorbeeld:
u wil een blog maken over de actualiteit. Dan kan u bvb. dagelijks een bericht plaatsen met uw mening over iets uit de actualiteit. Bvb. over een bepaalde ramp, ongeval, uitspraak, voorval,... U geeft bvb. in de titel het onderwerp waarover u het gaat hebben en in het bericht plaatst u uw mening over dat onderwerp. Zo kan u bvb. meedelen dat de media voor de zoveelste keer het fout heeft, of waarom ze nu dat weer in de actualiteit brengen,... Of u kan ook meer diepgaande artikels plaatsen en meer informatie over een bepaald onderwerp opzoeken en dit op uw blog plaatsen. Indien u over meerdere zaken iets wil zeggen op die dag, plaatst u deze als afzonderlijke berichten, zo is dit het meest duidelijk voor uw bezoekers.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u wil een blog maken als dagboek. Dagelijks maakt u een bericht aan met wat u er wenst in te plaatsen, zoals u anders in een dagboek zou plaatsen. Dit kan zijn over wat u vandaag hebt gedaan, wat u vandaag heeft gehoord, wat u van plan bent, enz. Maak een titel en typ het bericht. Zo kunnen bezoekers dagelijks naar uw blog komen om uw laatste nieuwe bericht te lezen en mee uw dagboek te lezen.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u wil een blog maken met plaatselijk nieuws. Met uw eigen blog kan u zo zelfs journalist zijn. U kan op uw blog het plaatselijk nieuws vertellen. Telkens u iets nieuw hebt, plaats u een bericht: u geeft een titel op en typt wat u weet over het nieuws. Dit kan zijn over een feest in de buurt, een verkeersongeval in de streek, een nieuwe baan die men gaat aanleggen, een nieuwe regeling, verkiezingen, een staking, een nieuwe winkel, enz. Afhankelijk van het nieuws plaatst u iedere keer een nieuw bericht. Indien u veel nieuws heeft, kan u zo dagelijks vele berichten plaatsen met wat u te weten bent gekomen over uw regio. Zorg ervoor dat u telkens een nieuw bericht ingeeft per onderwerp, en niet zaken samen plaatst. Indien u wat minder nieuws kan bijeen sprokkelen is uiteraard 1 bericht per dag of 2 berichten per week ook goed. Probeer op een regelmatige basis een berichtje te plaatsen, zo komen uw bezoekers telkens terug.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u wil een blog maken met een reisverslag. U kan een bericht aanmaken per dag van uw reis. Zo kan u in de titel opgeven over welke dag u het gaat hebben, en in het bericht plaatst u dan het verslag van die dag. Zo komen alle berichten onder elkaar te staan, netjes gescheiden per dag. U kan dus op éénzelfde dag meerdere berichten ingeven van uw reisverslag.
- Bijvoorbeeld:
u wil een blog maken met tips op. Dan maakt u telkens u een tip heeft een nieuw bericht aan. In de titel zet u waarover uw tip zal gaan. In het bericht geeft u dan de hele tip in. Probeer zo op regelmatige basis nieuwe tips toe te voegen, zodat bezoekers telkens terug komen naar uw blog. Probeer bvb. 1 keer per dag, of 2 keer per week een nieuwe tip zo toe te voegen. Indien u heel enthousiast bent, kan u natuurlijk ook meerdere tips op een dag ingeven. Let er dan op dat het meest duidelijk is indien u pér tip een nieuw bericht aanmaakt. Zo kan u dus bvb. wel 20 berichten aanmaken op een dag indien u 20 tips heeft voor uw bezoekers.
- Bijvoorbeeld:
u wil een blog maken dat uw activiteiten weerspiegelt. U bent bvb. actief in een bedrijf, vereniging of organisatie en maakt elke dag wel eens iets mee. Dan kan je al deze belevenissen op uw blog plaatsen. Het komt dan neer op een soort van dagboek. Dan kan u dagelijks, of eventueel meerdere keren per dag, een bericht plaatsen op uw blog om uw belevenissen te vertellen. Geef een titel op dat zeer kort uw belevenis beschrijft en typ daarna alles in wat u maar wenst in het bericht. Zo kunnen bezoekers dagelijks of meermaals per dag terugkomen naar uw blog om uw laatste belevenissen te lezen.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u wil een blog maken uw hobby. U kan dan op regelmatige basis, bvb. dagelijks, een bericht toevoegen op uw blog over uw hobby. Dit kan gaan dat u vandaag een nieuwe postzegel bij uw verzameling heeft, een nieuwe bierkaart, een grote vis heeft gevangen, enz. Vertel erover en misschien kan je er zelfs een foto bij plaatsen. Zo kunnen anderen die ook dezelfde hobby hebben dagelijks mee lezen. Als u bvb. zeer actief bent in uw hobby, kan u dagelijks uiteraard meerdere berichtjes plaatsen, met bvb. de laatste nieuwtjes. Zo trek je veel bezoekers aan.
WAT ZIJN DIE "REACTIES"?
Een bezoeker kan op een bericht van u een reactie plaatsen. Een bezoeker kan dus zelf géén bericht plaatsen op uw blog zelf, wel een reactie. Het verschil is dat de reactie niet komt op de beginpagina, maar enkel bij een bericht hoort. Het is dus zo dat een reactie enkel gaat over een reactie bij een bericht. Indien u bvb. een gedicht heeft geschreven, kan een reactie van een bezoeker zijn dat deze het heel mooi vond. Of bvb. indien u plaatselijk nieuws brengt, kan een reactie van een bezoeker zijn dat deze nog iets meer over de feiten weet (bvb. exacte uur van het ongeval, het juiste locatie van het evenement,...). Of bvb. indien uw blog een dagboek is, kan men reageren op het bericht van die dag, zo kan men meeleven met u, u een vraag stellen, enz. Deze functie kan u uitschakelen via "Instellingen" indien u dit niet graag heeft.
WAT IS DE "WAARDERING"?
Een bezoeker kan een bepaald bericht een waardering geven. Dit is om aan te geven of men dit bericht goed vindt of niet. Het kan bvb. gaan over een bericht, hoe goed men dat vond. Het kan ook gaan over een ander bericht, bvb. een tip, die men wel of niet bruikbaar vond. Deze functie kan u uitschakelen via "Instellingen" indien u dit niet graag heeft.
